I'm debating whether this video should fall under the "Color Analysis & Skin Tones: Deep Dives" playlist or the "Practical Tips for Color Analysis" playlist - let me know what your thoughts are in the comments! ♥
That's a tough one but I'd say the deep dive playlist
Can you put this video into both? If not, I would say color analysis and skin tone deep dive. Fantastic video by the way!
The content kind overlaps though, I would put in both!
All I can think of now is “florals for spring? Groundbreaking” 😂😂😂 (not a criticism in any way just had to comment that because of the topic)
Hahaha, same.
I also think of that movie every time I just can't decide between two belts 😅
🤣🤣

😂😂😂
I would love a video on textures ....
i use so many of these concepts in my job as a tattoo artist, super helpful and makes it easy to tell the client if i think they'd make a bad choice when following through with a design, size, placement or colouring that wouldn't suit them. and other than a piece of jewellery or clothing, you can't remove a tattoo easily or cheaply.
So interesting. A lot o of people seem to avoid patterns altogether. It is easier to put outfits together when there are no patterns, but I'm drawn to them.
It's the opposite for me. I l9ve patterns but need to be selective to consider wearing them Patterns have to be delicate and low contrast to suit me. Geometric shapes I steer away from unless they are small amd detailed.
”Why isn’t this working” starts to make more and more sense! Thank you!!
I hear you on the jewelry: I can't go too dainty/delicate either, since itty bitty pieces tend to disappear on me. Between my color season, my Kibbe ID, and whatever else, I tend to default to window shopping for sculptural art pieces in my recommended metals, stones, etc. Is it in perfect alignment with the trends? Probably not. Do I feel powerful when I wear a set of cuff bracelets or a striking collar necklace? Yes. And the best part is, these styles look natural and normal on me. I can't even imagine trying to wear symmetrical little stud earrings nowadays.
As far as patterns I've been trying to honor the recommendations for season, style ID, and so on as with jewelry. This is a tough one because I want to keep some of the things I love (stripes, oversized houndstooth, tartan cut on the bias) while road testing the new recs (paisley, big rounded shapes in general). The one thing I have found is that I can pull off soft-edged abstract motifs and (possibly) marble print.
Thank you so much for the video!
This felt like an EUREKA. Being someone with high contrast I felt like bold patterns suited me better and thank to this analysis now I understand why.
Talking about patterns, could you talk too about patterns matching with you facial features,I've seen some people doing a consult on korea on personal colors, and in that consult they talked about the patterns matching with facial features, what are you toughts about it? I think it really makes sense and could like a video on it.❤
Thanks for the suggestion! Let me see what I can come up with 😀
This! I follow Dear Peachie and they talk about faces with high or low visual weight. That's being the trickiest issue for me in all this styling journey (I'm not sure, but I think "low weight" means faces with more empty spaces, and "high weight" faces with almost no space between features. They should work with solid colors/big patterns and small patterns, respectively).
@@ZurditaDinamita yes,but for me is very tricky too,for example,IU have low visual weight but is a bright spring, should she go large or small in the size of the patterns? People with round facial features tend to look good with polka dots, and ppl with angular maybe stripes? But if the person needs more contrast? I think visual weight may alows a person if for instance is light summer, maybe can go slightly darker but not straight up to deep, maybe medium . Anna bey is a woman with channel here on TH-cam and she have the estereotipycal light summer features but she have high visual weight, which I think is the reason why she can pull of slightly medium tones or she just sit between light and cool summer🤷🏽♀️. Maybe people with low visual weight but brighter skin should just go for small but high contrast? Is very difficult 😑
Thank you for addressing jewellery size!
I think this topic probably lands on practical tips for color analysis. I know when I started consuming color analysis content this was too much on top of sorting through a lot of confusing content. I would also say that, your own physicality can determine size of pattern and jewelry. I am 5'0 and diagnosed myself as bright winter, and I would probably venture that someone who is 5'7 and a bright winter would need larger patterns and jewelry. Kind of in the sense of what is high contrasting in a 4x4 square or what is high contrast in a 8x8 square. Which is that idea of what is enough contrast for me? If you are a noob and haven't checked out Christine Scaman's content on color analysis it could be helpful in understanding this subject. I watched a video how to be a bright winter, not true winter. She related bright winter as winter with a bit of spring. So compared to the other two winters you might need more "movement" where the other winters are more "still" in comparison. I have interpreted this to mean: placement of color, patterns, shine of fabric, shine of jewelry, sheerness or opacity of fabric, does the fabric move or is it stiff. I think all those things have some relation back to level of contrast. I think as Jenn has mentioned in color analysis, the temperature of a color is only one dimension - so having your palette is only one part of using color analysis to develop an outfit for yourself.
This is so timely! I’m usually a solid colour girl but I have 2 patterned tops in my cart I’m debating. Yay!!!
I hope you found the video to be helpful in making a decision! ♥
Same thing for me, finally dipping my toe into buying/wearing some patterns. My style has evolved so much since putting more time and effort into finding my personal season/ style / kibbe type et cetera. So happy to see this video :)
Never made this connection with patters... looking in my closet i see mostly b&w stripes and now i understand why lol! I have tried this year to experiment with other patterns and gravitate toward botanical prints with dark/ bold colors. Its the contrast! Aha! You're one smart cookie ;)
I concur about your "speck of dust" comment on dainty jewelry too. Too true.
Great point about jewelry size/character that I think is a unique insight. I'm medium contrast and my jewelry needs to be medium, I've noticed. Too dainty just looks lost or fussy on me- too large looks unnatural and overwhelming. I thought it was because I was a "Natural" Kibbe type and needed more fluidity but it makes sense to think of it in terms of my contrast too.
This is a very practical tip- honestly the money we'd save if we knew this up front!
A suggestion on larger jewellery - I love large art deco pieces and they are incredibly detailed. Large pieces don’t have to be plain and bulky if you like pattern so you can often get both and the designs are very strong in contrast which is perfect if you are a winter. Think black sapphires and white diamonds and platinum in a large statement choker. I wish!
i literally didn't notice you were wearing a necklace before you pointed it out!! so fascinating
Same!
This is a video I didn't know I needed... I've been struggling so much with finding the right jewellery for a long time - I love the look of minimalistic statement pieces but whenever I try then on, something seems off and heavy. I kind of had a feeling that as a soft autumn (I think) I look better in smaller, less contrasting patterns but I never made the connection to jewellery that way. Thank you so much for sharing all this! Something just clicked :D
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Anna, As a soft autumn, matte jewelry makes a big difference for me. I especially love, matte rose gold jewelry.
@@lightdancervaughn1447 me too :) and I found my love for rose quartz , it’s an amazing stone for soft autumn, it’s this really rich dirty pink colour.
@@lightdancervaughn1447 ah that's interesting - I have to try this!
Okay your hair and makeup here??? Gorgeous
Aw thank you so much! ♥
I have never heard this view on jewelry before, and it makes so much sense!
you are glowing Jenn!!
Aw thank you so much! ♥
This totally makes sense to me. Me - definitely an autumn, probably a true autumn. I realized in my 20s that I'm not someone who should wear complex patterns (I think it has something to do with my skin and features (skin with texture, bigger features) which look higher contrast/brighter when I go for solid color blocks and get overwhelmed with lots of patterns). In general, no stripes, no florals, unless very subtle in tone and not too small. I can wear plaids, paisleys and ombres as long as they are my colors. Jewelry is minimalist, large but not too large (I am in my 50s so am trying to avoid the statement necklaces but oh well! :D). I also have to say that Lupita's smaller more delicate features look so well balanced with smaller earrings. Contrast her style with Cynthia Erivo - also a petite woman, but so much more maximalist in jewelry and clothing. Both look smashing.
This was such good timing. I’m waffling over a pair of pants and this video just reminded me that the stripy geometric pattern that would be ‘ethnic’ in a more neutral color isn’t going to work any better for me just because it’s in shades of blue. Those pants would have gone in the part of my closet reserved for stuff I can’t figure out why it isn’t working.
The size and texture of jewelry is super important I find in how soft or bright the pieces are perceived, sometimes even more important than the actual color/brightness of the metal an sich. Also, as a flamboyant natural going bigger in the jewelry is key, intricate jewelry just disappears so may be also playing a role for you Jenn.
Good point!
Your videos have made me realize why I'm drawn to certain colors (HIGH CONTRAST, dark, bright) and makeup styles, but the point about jewelry Blew My Mind! I admire my friends with curated sets of thin metal earrings and rings, but I have always been more drawn to big bold colorful earrings myself - now I get why!
Jen, i was always debating if i'm a bright winter or a bright spring. This video was really helpful for me, now i know that Even i can go with bright winter if i want, i'm a bright spring and those are the patterns that really flatter me, i love that kind of bold patterns and i often wear them ❤
Wow, great video. Very educational. You didn't mention anything I already knew. I just never gave any thought to that issue. I am a warm True Spring and Type 1/2. Although I do try my best to wear my colours and patterns I never considered the reasons why. Contrast was something I just never thought of. Again much thanks for a great video and sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for those examples with your own necklace and earrings! That put so much of my own collection into perspective!
I’m gonna be honest - I didn’t notice your necklace at all until you pointed it out 😂. It’s pretty but I would say that a bigger and brighter piece would look spectacular on you!
This is very useful! I'm slowly learning to build my style, and patterns are the trickiest for me. I am a True Winter but keeping it too "clean" looks plain on me. I need accessories and some amount of patterns
Thanks for mentioning your experience with accessories because I experience the opposite: many 'small' accessories become 'big' when I wear them!
It really comes down again to personal features and overall balance
I'm a soft summertype, and I can't wear high contrast patterns. It helps me to know this when I'm buying clothes, for sure.
A light went on for me when you mentioned your jewelry looked like dust when you wear it. I'm a True Winter and I need high shine or highly coloured, big pieces, otherwise they disappear on me.
I think you find bigger jewelry more suitable also because you're a Natural. By the way you are prettier in each video! ❤
Fair point as well! Thank you ♥ I think the change in scenery from my bedroom to living room has helped a lot with lighting as I get less comments about how washed out I look haha
I was thinking the same about being probably a Natural
Thank you for this video, Jenn. Your understanding of color is amazing! I love your deep dives, and am learning a lot of practical, useful tips.
You are so welcome! I’m glad you’re finding the deep dives helpful ❤️
Thank you for another amazing video, Jenn. Your analysis is always a level deeper than most, I just love it. I learn so much from your videos.
Oh! And thank you for talking about soft spring in a previous video. My coloring is soft, low contrast and warm. I’m also brown skinned. I was always confused after typing myself as a soft autumn because i didn’t know a soft spring existed. That video finally gave me some answers 😊
I'm glad you're finding my content helpful and informative! ♥
When it comes to jewelry, I am curious to know more about different materials. For example, what about contrast/softness when it comes to pearls and crystals? 😊
Great suggestion!
I think the necklace is a little dainty on you. You describe things SO articulately and make the concepts very easy to grasp and take action on! I am excited to go through my wardrobe based on a few videos of yours I’ve watched and see if I can define my style more.
But maybe the necklace looks different in person. I’m watching this on my phone.
Thank you, this video helped me to finally get clarity on which subcategory I'm in 🤩🤩
Very useful information and an inspired idea to contrast the three Spring subcategories to illustrate the point of contrast and color! Loved the jewelry portion as well! Thanks again for a substantive discussion on relevant points. ❤
Glad you liked it!
Great, interesting and useful video. I've never considered my contrast level when I'm choosing accessories. I'm going to really think about it now!
Yeah its a great tip for jewelry. I actually need a middle big version, not to small, not big and clumsy. I like gem necklaces for example, but the handmade ones are soo big mostly and heavy, that i cant wear it
I have learned, through many trials and errors, that most patterns I like do not work for me. I want to say I’m a soft autumn and I have found that the boho chic patterns tend to work better, but they also tend to be the least interesting to me 😂 I love bold florals and geometric patterns but wow do they look terrible on me lol. I also find that overly dainty jewelry tends to disappear on me, which is interesting because I’m quite low contrast. Perhaps it’s because my body type skews more classic than gamine/delicate
Thanks Jenn! Interesting video. Though I prioritise colour most for my clothes, when I'm considering the size of jewellery I focus more on my proportions and shapes for example: face shape, my features and my kibbe ID. For example: I like bigger jewellery because I'm tall and I have prominent facial features.
I'm not suggesting that considering colour anaylsis isn't helpful though, just sharing what works for me.
Ah. So I was correct in feeling, that the more dainty, often multilayered jewelry, that has been all the rage these last couple years, felt 'off' on me. I'm a textbook winter and I have always gravitated towards bold statement pieces. Even though it feels at times, as if noone but me likes them 😆.
Yeah I really couldn't do the multilayered trend either. Most of my jewelry is collecting dust since they're all bold statement pieces and I rarely have an occasion to wear them lol!
@@stylerefinementevery day is an occasion 😊
I am also a winter and hate the stacked necklaces, tiny necklaces. I am trying to use shiny and slightly bigger necklaces for everyday wear. I have a very casual wardrobe, so finding jewelry that makes sense for that can be challenging.
Wow! I learn I be rather minimal or go null on the jewellery. I gravitate towards winter cool colours with high contrast. There was a time i wish i was a certain complexion. Now, i understand the beauty of my complexion in warm, low contrast colours. I am glad i understand and love my complexion.
I love the color on your lips! It is like a toned down plum. What is the name of your lipstick?
Thank you
I think its a plum that she just use small amount of product, for give the softness that she needs
Hi! I'm using Almay Lipvibes in shade 180 Get Crazy in this video ♥
@@stylerefinement Thank you love
I've wasted so much money on hoop earrings too! I am short and petite and usually go for dainty jewellery. So I started out with thin medium hoops. Didn't love it, something looked unbalanced. So I went smaller. It was better but I didn't notice them as much. I thought maybe I need thicker hoops. So I tried that. I love thicker hoops, but my first few pairs were medium sized and it looked unbalanced again. Eventually after experimenting with like a dozen pairs, I've finally figured out my best hoops. Thicker, super tiny hoops that hug my ear. These are really hard to find, unfortunately. They need to be like 5mm diameter. My hunt for the perfect hoops definitely gave me an appreciation for how complex and not so obvious it can be to find one's most flattering style.
Really interesting video! I am a dramatic Kibbe with classic and ingenue essence and a deep winter (which I figured out from your latest video series) and always found small jewellery doesn't work very well on me so I tend to go for bigger jewellery such as large earrings, I've got a couple of pairs of medium hoops that are great for every day! Necklaces are still tricky as I want fine jewellery but larger sizes are very expensive!
Totally agree with you about the price 😢 (also another reason why I don't wear jewelry all that much, period lol.)
I just really love that you also analyse everything that surrounds you ♥ may I ask what your zodiac sign is? :D if that is not too personal
I'm an Aquarius! 😀
Another brilliant video! Thank you 😊
Your videos are so much fun 😊 Thanks, Jenn! ❤
That lip colour looks great on you.
Thank you so much! ♥
Sounds like you're talking about visual weight!! Especially the discussion about jewelry
I thought the same thing!!
Contrast is part of visual weight so that makes sense 😀
I’m a bright winter leaning a bit true. No wonder why I tend to prefer dangling earrings, the bigger and more colorful the better 😂 always not a fan of studs.
Haha I'm the same with studs, although I have studs for my cartilage piercings!
I have dainty necklaces like that even though I look better in large contrast jewelry BUT I wear them where they are in the nape of my neck and are framed by a collar or a V-neck of a dress or top. That way it’s not just lost on my skin.
Agreed with the jewelry part, but wanted to mention, the overall size. I’m 5.10 and those thin and dainty chains and bracelets are too small for me, even though I’m pretty lean, and a cool summer, and my facial features are of moderate size. Still I always have to choose something larger in size even as every day jewelry
I wonder if it has anything to do with your ability to borrow from Winter as a cool summer!
@@stylerefinement I guess🤔
Great insights as usual Jenn.
It clarified a few things for me. Thanks ❤
Glad it was helpful! 🥰
Jen, do you have any idea why I feel short and squat when I wear skirts and dresses to my ankles? I'm 175cm tall so I'm not short
It could be because of your proportions. If you have a long torso then skirts all the way to the ground might give “stocky” appearance.
@IncandescentLightbulb00 thanks for replying :). No, neither my legs nor my torso are long or short. Everything is just normal.
You seem pretty tall… maybe it’s just cuz you’re not used to it 🤷♀️
Because your legs have disappeared
Have you ever explored Kibbe’s body types? It might help you understand your body type and how certain clothing / cuts / silhouettes suit certain body types better. For eg. I have a proportionate body type with strong bone structure making me a Dramatic Classic. Very long flowy dresses or skirts don’t suit me as well as something mid way with structure does.
Of course I’ve oversimplified the system - it’s a bit more complicated than that 😅, but personally I found it very eye opening
I literally didnt realize you were wearing a necklace before you said! Haha
If you are fairly high contrast and need to wear more bold jewellery, it's a bummer because you're pretty much limited to costume jewellery. I'd need one heck of a giant gemstone for it to look good on me, and that's not possible unless you're royalty.
Is it just me, or is it possible to connect some colour seasons to different decades? For example I feel like the characteristics of autumn was very present during the 1970s. I am a spring, and find it really hard to get inspiration from 70s fashion trends
Yes and no. What we think of as 1970s fashion definitely leaned into a stereotypical Autumn palette, but people wore colors from other palettes as well. Similarly we think of 1950s fashion in terms of cupcake pastels and the like in spite of the abundant evidence from that era of women tweaking the trends in favor of palettes that suited them. (Actresses in the old studio structure were slotted into Robert Dorr's Color Key system, which was a precursor to Suzanne Caygill and her various successors. It's why you'll see Ava Gardner wearing a sumptuous sapphire blue ensemble while Grace Kelly is costumed in softer hues.)
I get what you’re saying. For example, when someone says 70s to me, I automatically think hippies or Brady Bunch and avocado/rust/harvest gold. I have to remind myself that it was also disco era and Farrah Fawcett and Mary Tyler Moore. I think if you’re wanting to capture the vibe, as a spring you can probably look for ways to brighten and/or lighten the palette. I’m a winter and I’ve had to learn to manage my contrast. Some of my practical tips: 1) reduce the tonal variety - eg, pick one shade of brown for your outfit, then one light color (closer to white than the really yellowish cream) and a limited number of contrasting brights like orange and yellow or pink and green- not all four at once (although if you’re warm spring you might pull that one off). 2) increase the pattern size so there are more chunks of one color in one spot - eg, groovy flowers instead calico. 3) make sure you have a focal point near your face- eg, if you’re wearing layers of necklaces, make one of them clearly bigger and chunkier and keep the others as small strings of gold-toned beads. 4) avoid brown-influenced colors. Instead of avocado, go for lime. Instead of rust, go for orange or coral. Instead of harvest gold, go for sunflower.
This is spot on! ❤❤❤
Hey Jenn, do you think that warm olives can pull off cool colors? Such as pure white and powder blue (the color of most blue button down collared shirts)?
A bit unrelated to the video but being a deep autumn and a Kibbe Dramatic is like YOU HAVE TO HAVE CONTRAST AND BRING ATTENTION TO YOURSELF but i am shy 😅
Can u make a video on clear deep type ?
You keep coming back to contrast. Things are about to change for me. I have very light skin with very dark hair. But now I’m going to grow out my gray. I still hair dark eyebrows and dark hazel eyes. I’m not sure that you address this, as your viewers are probably younger. I’d live it if you’d give it a try.
I avoid stripes unless it's a very fine low contrast pin stripe on a trouser. I'm too curvy for anything too geometric/straight/bold. I love India prints, paisleys, abstracted florals, polka dots, medallion, anything rounded or blended or watercolor like. I like stripey tops & dresses on other people, just not me : -/
Just bought jewelry now I’m nervous
What is your season?
If your face structure is not dramatic you might need more delicate jewellery. I dont see dramatic in your face structure...
