Unsure about your Color Season? Start with your Contrast Level!

- There seems to be a lot of differing opinions around the concept of contrast level in your own coloring and its relationship to your color season. This is the first video of the new Color Series on my channel where we deep-dive into the concept of finding your own contrast level and connecting the dots to where you might sit on the seasonal colors system.

Happy International Women's Day everyone! 🥰❤
I have watched so many videos, read so books, and have had 2 professional color analyses done, and you explain color analysis much clearer than anyone else. It is evident that you have a comprehensive understanding of the content and convey the information in a clear and concise manner. Please continue with more videos on this topic!!
A whole series coming :D !
Were there differences between the 2 prof analysis you had? Did they come to the same conclusion?
She confuses me
i always have to watch your videos at least twice because of how much information you provide in each one ❤❤
Haha that's good for me 😆!! I'm glad you're finding the content informative ❤
@@stylerefinement you are so sweet on top of being smart ❤️ happy women's day to you and to all your beautiful followers, subscribers and women in your life ❤️❤️
Happy International Women's Day! 🌻❤
Looking forward to the video on patterns and contrasts!
I think the best way to determine your colour season is by doing the 3 tests of cold/warm, bright/muted and light/dark. Not every test might give you a clear answer but there will probably will be one test with a very clear answer, and go from there. Because colours can match multiple criterias. So if you test pastel blue vs royal blue and the light blue looks better, is it because it is muted and the other is bright, or because it is light and the other is medium/dark. If you already know you belong to a cold season, then this test might be helpful for determine if you're a summer or winter, or if you know you're a summer it can determine if you are true or light summer. But if you already know you are muted then the test is not very helpful and should be adjusted by comparing two muted colors etc
Such a great explanation! Now I realize why I don’t look good In monochromatic outfits. Especially all white/light or all black makes me look washed out.
Glad you liked the video! ❤️
I don't know why I have such a difficult time with deciding what contrast I am (have?) Maybe that means medium (although my mum & sister both told me high but that may be because they both have very low (&light) contrast. I also feel like my hair changes how dark or light it seems constantly. One day I think I have quite dark brown hair and the next I think it's actually pretty light to medium brown. I really can't tell. The only thing I know is that I am cool toned. But I really appreciate your analytical approach when it comes to these topics!
Do you have curly hair? I notice when i have brushed mine and its in a fluffy state, its lighter vs when i put creme into my curls and the hair is more clumped together
I was going to say something similar to @minglian9335, but from the hydration aspect. I notice on my own wavy/curly hair that if it's feeling a bit drier it's lighter in colour, but if it's well hydrated it's darker. And it can change with the seasons too, summer can lighten it up a little and winter can be a bit darker.
@@minglian9335 @frangipanisandgirl Oh, yes that's probably why! I do have wavy to curly hair and it's definitely lighter in its fluffier state and hydration would make sense as well!
always on point Jenn. thank you!! I've seen contrast defined by its relationship to all three chromatic characteristics individually, but never in relation to all of them simultaneously, which I think is a more realistic approach.
You also touched on the relationship between depth and temperature, which I only recently came to realize myself. I would love to see a whole video dedicated to this topic as well!
Glad you liked the video! I'll add it to my list and see what I can come up with :)
I really love the way you explain things! Contrast is the characteristic I’m most sensitive too and this helps break down why. Thank you for this video
Glad it was helpful!
😂 I was more confused than anything
I had lipsticks that I really thought were a good colors for me, but once I tried it on the colors looked so overwhelming on me. Then I did the lipstick test (from one of your previous videos) and that realized it the issue wasn't the color itself; but the intensity of the color and the contrast they created on my face. So now I can wear all of my lipsticks no problem, all I have to do is apply a very thin and delicate layer; OR apply it as normal but wipe ~50% of it off. (I have medium-low contrast).
I’m bringing this point up again in the video I’ll be publishing this Friday! 🙌
I do love your videos! One thing I have to disagree is that we naturally know what looks good on us because we see ourselves in the mirror everyday and we know ourselves. I used to LOVE dusty, gray colors in a very visual way, so I always have them in my clothes, and with you I have learnead I am kind of a dark autum just getting the time to try very sarurated green, brown and blue tones. Those look SO much better in me everybody notices! Thank you!
Aw thank you for the sweet comment ❤ Glad the content is proving helpful!
@@stylerefinement You are very thoughtfull and sweer while clear in your explanations. I always look forward to your videos. Please keep them coming!
Thanks, I think I'm medium contrast from this video😊 warm spring is most likely my season
Excited for the rest of this series! I used to think I’m a deep autumn until I realized how important contrast was - I’m pretty low contrast even though I’m Asian, and I finally realized dark and/or saturated colors don’t work on me.
On another note, a friend recently got her color analysis done in Korea, and she said they told her Asians often get mistyped as autumn or winter due to the dark hair, even though a lot of Asians are actually spring/summer. Do you have plans to dive deeper into color analysis by race? That would be super helpful for me, I have no idea what my season is anymore lol
Great idea! I am Asian too. It will be really helpful to have a deep dive as there is lack of understanding what colors look good on individuals. Chinese new year just passed. Traditionally, everyone wears the bright red, but only some look good. Color analysis is way more developed in the western culture and mostly for white people. We need to develop this for other races as we do look very different.
I’ll add it to my topics list for my Asian sisters ❤️🤓
@@stylerefinementcould you do for africans? I know it might be hard if u are not used to but, just a question.
My face is literally white in B & W. I learned that wearing a darker top is essential for any yearbook or ID photo or my face disappeared lol. Color photography I would go with a midtone mid saturation color that I know is flattering to me or soft white since it reflects light (on me)
I wonder if this is why I prefer photos of myself in black and white than color..?
If you prefer photos of yourself in black and white, that probably means you're wearing clothes with the correct contrast but the wrong colors.
This was so helpful and informative thank you! I realise that I have very high contrast and that is why I look better in brighter colours with higher clarity. I can, however, wear both warm and cool tones so I am more sensitive to clarity than I am to tone. Now I understand why coral looks great on me but beige or brown does not.
Glad it was helpful!
Imo patterns can be low med and high contrast. If I wear a black and white striped shirt, that hasore contrast than a grey one!
Fair point! The comparison would obviously need to be done with the colours in the the pattern - for example black and white stripes vs solid black!
I can't wear all white or all black, but if I wear black and white at the same time.. it looks good!
But I like better an off white and dark color...
So I'd say medium to high contrast...
But also medium to low saturation, medium to dark, and the temperature makes me even more confused 😅
I can wear black and White alone but combined it Just makes me disappear.
@@sam8007 how funny.. the opposite... maybe you can't have much contrast
You're my fav channel..
❤❤❤❤❤
My favourite kind of video 😍💖.
Aw thanks Leticia! ❤😍
Ohhhhhhhhh, that explains it perfectly. This true summer thanks you!
Glad it was helpful! ❤
I think there is also contrast by temperature. So if all your features are very cool or very warm it can look quite muted. But if for example your skin leans more warm and your hair more cool naturally then there is more contrast.
It's the case for me. My main trait is cool. I have light cool skin, grayish blue eyes and dark ash blond hair. There is some contrast between my hair and skin but it does also kinda blend in. And i have seen this with very warm people as well where there might theoretically be a bit of contrast due to light/dark but because everything is very warm it blends in.
I also once took the color picker tool on a photo of mine to create a color palette of my natural coloring and all the colors were very muted
Yay another jenn video 🎉🎉😊
Almost certainly a true summer, my mum found a teal and fuchsia pattern that looks amazing with her skin. She also looks great in a navy and black outfit. This is mysifying to me because she has grey eyes, grey hair, and pale skin 🤷
Summer is a muted season. All colours have varying shades of and tints of black making colours look grey.
@@LimeBear-bh7nl Good point... I wonder if that makes her a winter though. Hmm.
I'm not sure about the patterns. I feel like winters can rock the white and black checkered outfits because of their high-level of light-dark contrast. So I've always thought complicated and very busy patterns were reserved for people needing a mix of depth and high chroma characteristics. I thought that thinking checked out bc of how you described light autumns vs soft springs from an earlier video where you described soft autumns as not being able to carry patterns vs light autumns who can. Granted, those are very nuanced seasons so it makes sense that their determinations would come from a place of how their depth, contrast, and chroma intertwine and play together! Soo...will definitely be looking out for that eventual patterns video!
Oh man you teach me so many cool things!!! Love this channel thank you! ❤
I'm so glad! ❤❤❤
It makes sense to me that the dominant trait of a (sub)season is most evident and that can be either temperature (cool/warm) OR dark/light (value) OR saturation (chroma). So saying not to start with contrast level (or something else) as a blanket statement seems short-sighted, especially if you're not used to watching how colours affect you.
You look completly stunning! I love the way you look on this video 🥰
Aw thank you for this ❤❤❤

2:11 + 3:18 + 4:41 THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS!! I’m tired of seeing bc i’m dark skinned I’m automatically high contrast when i can see in real life that high contrast tends to look jarring on me compared to softer/ muted tones!
I’m still not sure if my contrast is my primary or the fact that i’m a warmer skin tone, i just know that I’m somewhere in autumn and i tend to lean in preference towards deep autumn. But i can pull off some soft autumn colours well too, not any true autumn though - hence the confusion.
At this point I just pick a colours within autumn that look good on me lol
6:56 that explains a wholleee lot thank you sm🫶🏾
I’m planning to dye my black hair to a chocolate brown shade with bright brown highlights and very few blonde highlights… will this change my colour season? Or look jarring against my skin tone as a deep autumn?
I'm glad you liked the video! Dying your hair won't change your color season - if you are an Autumn you should stick to warm tones in the brown and the highlights!
Omg thanks for the response!!! I’ll keep that in mind, thanks Jenn🫶🏾
@@stylerefinementwait, it won't?! I just got done reading like 3 articles that say it does. I'm so confused, everyone has such different opinions on all of this color analysis stuff. I just want to give up.
Very interesting, I've known for a long time that I'm a winter type but I don't know what type 😅
No one explains color analysis quite as clearly as you do.
Aw thank you for this ❤❤❤
Love your content !
Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying the vids ❤️
I feel like finding my season is always so dificult because I dye my hair such a drastcly diferent color from my natural one. I think naturally I have soft, low contrast coloring (fair skin, light brown eyes, and light brown to dark blond hair depending on the light). All my natural featurs seam to kind of blend together but since I now dye my hair a deep red, all of my features seem much more high contrast. All my natural featurs seem to point to me being some kind of summer but soft colors really wash me out and when I look at the colors I look best in, they seem to be mostly winter and some autumn colors. I've even had people guess that I'm on the cusp of dark autumn and dark winter. Basically I can't tell if im actually a dark season or if I've somehow curated my appearance though hair color and make up to fit a different season... I'm so confused!
I’m in exactly the same boat. Brown hair, brown eyes (both mousey), peach toned muted skin tone. But now I dye my hair auburn so there’s much more contrast with my eyes. I dunno either; I’m lost. 🥲
This was sooo helpful, omg! 😭
I always knew I have high contrast (I have very dark almost black hair, black eyebrows, dark brown eyes and very very light skin, I almost look like a vampire.. ), but I still can't figure out my season. I'm pretty sure I'm a winter, but I can't decide between Dark Winter and Bright Winter. 😮💨
Hi, I have also struggled to figure out if I was a bright or dark winter.
What I did to determine was I held pieces of clothing of different colors close to my face. For example a very bright royal blue vs navy. If navy looks better dark, ıf royal blue looks better bright winter.
Because the difference of the both seasons is that in bright winter brightness comes first, in dark winter darkness comes first and they're both cool seasons. So for bright winter it's like bright then cool, for dark winter it's dark then cool.
That's why I gave blue as an example. It's a cool color. If the bright shade of the cool color looks better on you than the dark shade of the cool color then you're a bright winter, if not dark winter.
You can also try with cool purples and burgundies. That's just my experience and I am just someone who loves color analysis I am not an expert by any means.
Can you make a video on how to navigate olive skin with rosacea
GREAT explanation😊😊😊
Thank you! 😃
Okay Jen, how about this? I’m a Dark Autumn with dark hair and light skin. I’m about to grow out my gray, which is salt and pepper. Supposedly, you remain the same season throughout life. Yet, obviously, the contrast level changes dramatically. So do I still wear Dark Autumn colors but lower the contrast?will I look cooler once the hair is gray, putting me into Dark Winter? Any ideas? This would make a great video.
OK, so would blonde hair, light skin and dark brown (but not black) eyes be high contrast? My eyes do look black when I make the image black and white. Also, I look better when I have contrast in my clothing.
as a low contrast person (soft summer or autumn) i look equally dead in super light and super dark clothes ESPECIALLY in pure white or black 😭
If I’m a light summer, can I borrow from soft summer, like with pants or accessories? I know I can borrow from light spring but not sure about the soft summer (true summer is too cool.
Now I’m completely confused.
Me too
@@susannpatton2893and me ✋️
I'm part of the Winter family, but I don't wanna stick to having black hair 😭 even though it's my natural hair colour. If my skin is on the light-medium, neutral-cool side... can I just go for a platinum blonde instead? There'll still be contrast, right 🥲
Ask your hair stylist, black to almost white is a lot of work. Maybe you are a while orange and yellow before you getting the beautiful platinum. Your hair must be extraordinary powerful to take this procedure. I would try a wig in platin blond and enjoy the easygoing with it. In the evening you could take it away 😉 Black is beautiful, maybe you need to wear your best colors to enjoy to be Snowwhite and not Cinderella 🤗
I have dark brown hair and hair stylists have never been that willing me to go blond. I think going to platinum blond may be bit too much, at least right away. Try little change at first!
... I think I'll just wear black 😅
What system uses deep summer? I though the 16 color season system has light summer, cool summer, true summer and soft summer 😮 also I heard that cool summer can borrow from cool winter because both have "cool" as their dominant trait. Never heard that true summer can borrow from winter although I'm sure it wouldn't look too bad since its all cool colors. I'm a bit confused. Love this channel though!😇
I know! There’s really so many different ways of segregating seasons that I’m starting to lose track 😂 I’ve seen systems you described that segregate True vs Cool/Warm seasons. The system I’m referring to also names Deep Summer as a Shaded Summer!!
The more western systems separate True Spring/Autumn/Winter/Summer from Cool Winter/Summer and Warm Spring/Autumn. Sometimes there's a difference between the definitions of those tho! Some will say the True season is anyone who prioritizes the three characteristics equally --> e.g. True Summer needs colors that are equally soft, cool, and light. Whereas a Cool Summer is someone who prioritizes coolness the most and can be close to Cool Winter on the spectrum. Others will say that someone in a True season will be anyone who wear any of the colors in the the seasons family --> e.g. Someone who can wear all the colors in cool summer, light summer, and soft summer is a True Summer.
Jenn often references 16 seasons, more popular in eastern systems, although I have seen one western system use it but with different names (like calling Deep Summer as Shaded Summer or Soft Spring as Toned Spring). This system adds one sub-season to each season based on a "missing" quality. So Spring and Winter get a slightly muted sub-season called Soft Spring or Soft Winter. Autumn gets Light Autumn and Summer gets Deep Summer.
I think Ângela when was younger had more contrast. Does aging alter your contrast level?
I think even if I have dark hair, skin and eyes, i eliminated the deep seasons bcs of my contrast level and how i look in deep colors in general. I experiment with lipstick shades bcs that is more easly for me to idealize. Deep lipstick such as deep red, very muted colors and highly contrastesd makeup looks awful on me.
Experimenting with lipstick colors is a great way imo as well! But I do find that there are variances between lip color and clothing so I like using both methods :) Some elements of contrast can change with aging due to the grays, but there are also other factors like your skin clarity, eye color, clarity of the sclera etc that don't change as drastically with age, so it's difficult to say for sure that aging lowers the contrast level for everyone!
When you say soft winter do you mean deep/dark winter or is aoft winter a sub-type of its own? (Btw love your videos, they are so helpful for a fellow olive girlie💚)
Soft winter is a subseason of its own in systems where there are more than 12 seasons!
Does highlighted your hair change your season
clarity determines contrast when you put images into black and white? Doesn't make sense to me since black and white images are reduced to only value
So, does Zoe have a high or a low contrast?
im just wondering, if you had really dark skin, would it be the other way around? and a dark brown would be low contrast, but a light beige high? I think about this every time this comes up and how it relates to colour seasons, in the way that a very fair and a very dark skinned person would be typed as the same season, but for different reasons so to say. What do you think about this?
I think that contrast can still be created through eyes and teeth against very dark skin, and depending on how dark the hair is, against the hair color as well. If the skin is very dark to the point where there is little contrast created even against very dark hair, then that much more striking contrast against teeth and eyes imo! Also contrast created with clarity would also be a factor to consider. I do think that because skin tone is the largest surface area visible, depth of skin does have an impact on which colours create high or low contrast to some degree, but it’s not the only factor to consider!
Can winters have neutral or olive undertone?
Yes :)
What happens when a high contrast, clear winter with very dark hair bcomes a light colored blonde (wigs - alopecia)? then her contrast is much less. And what if she looks best in clear, bright cool colors? Is there a season for that?
Also, even with blonde hair and light/med skin, I think I still look good in blackk nad whte. aybe I really don't. Very confused, and with so many womenchaning hair color, this leaves things confusing for us.
Clear, bright, cool would be a clear/bright winter in the seasonal system. If it’s a light platinum-ish blonde the contrast created by clarity could still be what’s working for you (if you’re suspecting clear winter)!
That's extremely helpful and I understand the reasoning behind it. The closer I get to a more natural looking medium blonde, the more I lose of that's striking look that dark brunettes have. I'm going to try going back to my lighter more neutral color blonde wigs. Thank you for that helpful information.
@@stylerefinement I think I'm less bright than the examples you use, so I think I'm a true winter maybe. Not sure, but I do know that choosing a lighter, brighter blonde wig with roots brings my look a lot more alive, even if it's a less natural looking color like a honey blonde. Those blondes are meh on me. I have hazel eyes and not that stark katy perry cool toned look. Still, I do believe the light bright blonde brings me closer to the striking look of when I was young and brunette.
So someone with very deep skin wearing white will be high contrast even if white is low contrast?
Yes for sure! Imo white is actually a high contrast color for a lot of people unless you have very pale skin :)
@@stylerefinement ohh now I understand what you meant, thank you ☺️
I have no idea what my contrast is. All of this is so confusing and it's becoming problematic for me. Everyone has a different season they'd type me as, and every AI is different too. Most often I get Cool Winter and Soft Summer, but aren't those super different answers aside from 'cool'?!? Trying to figure out my contrast has added another layer of confusion. Also, everyone has different opinions on what colors different seasons can wear and who is what season. It's starting to feel like absolute nonsense to me because it all seems so subjective. Then your season can change if you change your hair color or get a tan. It really feels hopeless and pointless to me anymore.
Well winter and summer are both cool .. summer is less contrast
I have dark hair and eyes with light-medium skin.
(High contrast?)
All of these features are quite warm,
and I’ve never been able to figure out my “season.”
Please halp.
some sort of autumn, i guess
What colour are the veins in your wrist if you look at them in natural light? Do you look better in gold jewellery or silver?
If you look at the color recommendations for the 4 seasons, don't you have an immediate favorite? I can type myself as a winter, just by considering what colors I know suit me.
@raraavis7782 This! 👆💚
Honestly I feel that you have a very low contrast
Interesting! I look pretty terrible in low contrast pairings - colors that don't create a strong enough contrast against my skin are my worst as well! 😝
@@stylerefinement Please don't get me wrong, you are really pretty but for example in this video you don't looks as bright and gorgeous as you looked in others that you are not wearing black, sometimes it is hard to tell our best colors because I used to be pretty confident that I was a winter type and I ended being a soft spring slightly influenced by light spring, basically I am light, warm and soft the opposite of Winter, either way I'm just saying this under my perspective you look good as always it is just my perception, I may or may not be right about this but I have an strong feeling that you are a soft summer,at least you can exclude winter and spring because both seasons are characterized by a glow that you don't have you look clearly softer,Winter's main point is high contrast even soft winter needs a high contrast level, and spring sense of life is glow, they need the shine always, you look more subtle and I feel that you have cool undertones,so excluding the deep summer because I feel that black doesn't work that good for you I would say that you are a soft summer. And I am not judging your knowledge about this topic, you explain this better than nobody , You are a really smart girl for sure ,I've seen millions of videos of this topic to summarize what you can summarize in a few minutes as no one else
I appreciate your opinion. Maybe you're right! It is difficult to see ourselves objectively after all. I've always felt like Soft Summer colors alone are too soft and I always have to pair with a darker tone i.e. black, but it could be how I'm seeing myself that's different from how others see me 🤗
😳
