My first pair of Costas was a pair I found in the surf at Pensacola. It was entangled in some seaweed and being pounded in the surf. There was some growth of barnacles/sea life on the frames but not the lenses. i took them to the Bass Pro in Destin and they said it was an older model called Manta Ray...I think? But they hadn't sold them for a few years. The lenses are still scratch free and the glasses look new after a little cleaning of the frames. I am now getting ready to buy a pair of the Permit w/ Blue Mirror Glass and I am excited for a pair of glasses I wont have to replace every year or two. The lack of distortion is also amazing. I am a cheap skate for the most part and I never thought I would spend $280 (includes tax) on a pair of sunglasses. Had I not found this pair being pounded in the surf, for months at the very least and still in perfect condition, I would of never considered dropping nearly $300 for some shades. CRAZY IDEA...maybe Costa ought to drop discontinued glasses in the surf along the beaches and let people find glasses in the pounding surf and be as impressed as I was??
Hey Kyle! Thank you for commenting and sharing your experience with us. We are huge fans of Costa sunglasses and their 580 glass lenses. Hey, Jimmy thanks for commenting! We would recommend going with the Green Mirrored or Copper Silver mirrored lenses. Both will have a copper base to provide contrast and sharper definition to see deeper into the water. Please let us know if we can help with anything else :)
So the Blue Mirror and new Gray Silver Mirror only differ in looks? If you had a pair of each, and closed your eyes and put one of them on, would you be able to tell which ones you were wearing simply by looking through the lens?
Hey, Taylor thanks for commenting! The Blue mirror will reflect more light off the lens compared to the gray silver mirror, which is why it's considered the best lens while on the open water. There is a slight difference when looking through the gray silver mirror because it can come with a copper base. When you get the gray base with the silver mirror then yes it will look very similar to the blue mirror when looking through.
In regards to that.. is there any difference if I were to look through the green mirror or silver mirror in copper base?? Or is it strictly looks like wilson mentioned..
I think that the blue mirror has a distinctive yellow tint that is completely different from the grey with silver mirror. The blue mirror is my least favorite lens.
robinnight I agree with you. I bought a pair of blue mirror Blackfins and received a pair of grey mirror Blackffins for Christmas The blue mirror does have a slight yellow tint to it. The grey silver mirror are pure grey. Easily seen on bright days if you switch back and forth just playing. I prefer the blue mirror myself. For my eyes, I can see better in the water with them and can easily spot fish and make out the bottom on the flats.
What would you guys recommend for me to get? I fish freshwater 99.9% of the time. I was thinking the green lenses would be a good choice. Also should I be getting the glass or polycarbonate lenses. I do a lot of hunting, fishing and shooting.
Hey Active_Briz! You have two options you can go with. One would be the 580 Blue mirrored lens that has a gray base. It's ideal for open water and offers the best protection. If you are looking for more contrast then the 580 Green mirrored lens is a great option. It has a copper base with the green mirror that allows certain colors to pop more while you are fishing. However, it is not as protective from the sun if you are consistently fishing on sunny days with no skies. I am attaching a couple links below to blogs we have written on each colored lens. They go more in-depth on the technical information of what each color offers. If you still have questions please feel free to comment back :) www.sportrx.com/blog/costa-green-mirror-lens-explained/ www.sportrx.com/blog/costa-blue-mirror-lens/
Personally, I use the Costa Rincon's with the 580 Green mirrored lenses when I fish off the pier down in Ocean Beach. I have never run into issues with the sun being too bright and I love the contrast the green provides.
I’ve had my costa blue lenses for 11 years now. They are amazing! I’m about to buy another pair and cannot decide on lens color. They block out sun and glare very well, but if you're using it for fish sighting and seeing 'cool stuff', the green's are way better for that. I find myself only using the blue pair when I drive a lot, so my green ones' take all the abuse of everyday wear and tear.
In general, I found the blue mirror in gray based are no good for fish sighting in fresh water, shallow waters, and definitely no good for stained water.
