I bought a 1976 Red hardtop Tr7 6 months ago, and this is the most informative source for TR7 restoration I have found, thanks! Trying to do what you are doing...
And sometimes 'the right tool for the job' is the one you have handy that sort of works well enough. 🙂 There's a time for bodgery and a time for doing it properly, knowing when those times are is a matter of experience 😆
Yes, that press has proved to be a worthwhile investment. I considered taking the shafts to a shop for them to do it, but I think by now I'd have spent as much doing that as I paid for the press itself.
I've just been doing the same job on my TR. Bit of of a job on your own. But possible. Have you come to fitting the new dampers yet? I'm having a few issues with mine. There is a nut welded to the top mounting point which seems not to alow the damper to go far enough into through the hole to allow the bush, washer and nuts to be fitted above. Have you had that problem?
I have got to change all the bushes in the rear of my TR7. I am torn between poly-bushes and rubber. I am under the impression modern reproduction rubber bushes are not that great (hard & perish quickly), hence why I am pondering going for poly-bushes, but I am worried I will wreck the ride and resonance qualities of the car by going poly-bush.. I would really appreciate your thoughts. How did you arrive at using poly-bushes? I like that fact they look easier to install in two parts :). And thanks again for taking time to do these videos, they are very useful :) Great videos honestly! Love the random appearance of your cats from time to time as well! :)
It's a tricky one, I spent some time just as you have weighing up the pros and cons. I considered mixing and matching (ie rubber on the front of the trailing arms, poly on the rear) but I got a good deal on the full set you see in the video. In the end, I figured it wasn't too much of a major deal to swap them to rubber if they proved to be too harsh - the biggest problems doing it usually end up being fighting crusty fasteners that haven't been undone in decades, not a problem in my case! That said, I've swapped to poly on other cars in the past and haven't noticed too much of a change in the NVH - unless you go for ultra hard sporty ones, they're not as bad as some make out. Glad you're enjoying the videos! 👍
@@RedsGarageUK Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it. It is tough, if quality OEM rubber ones existed, I would just buy these.. Thank you again :) PS - do you think it will be ready for the Malvern Triumph & MG day next year if its on?
@@adrianhughes2163 Unfortunately, a lack of OEM quality parts is becoming a real problem these days. At least with bushes there are decent aftermarket options available, not so much with other parts. I'm aiming to get the car on the road by next summer for sure - I'm aiming to take her to the Silverstone Classic, so Malvern should be doable (as long as the dates don't clash 😮).

Sounds like the twin of mine! Unpopular opinion (and probably biased), but I prefer the hardtops.
Keep up the good work 👍
I live by the doctrine ‘the right tool for the job’ after lots of bodge ups!!!😂

Thank you 😊
Getting excited seeing her come together!! Wheels on!!! Woo hoo!!😁🤘
Yeah, that was a big moment for me... I think she was on the dollies for about a year, so it was good to see her back on the ground again.
Nice job.
Thanks!
Good job! Bearings are tough to work with; you practically need a hydraulic press to do it properly. Regards from Canada

Great job getting the bearing off,,if your doing it again,,To make life a bit easier ,,Cut the bearing raise in two places ,,It really weakens it,,

Ignore that. Senior moment! I was offering up the spigot to the wrong orifice.
Lol. Happens to the best of us! Glad you got it sorted though.

@@RedsGarageUK Brilliant, I'd love to see it in the flesh, and say hello - thanks again :) You are making great progress, so there is every danger :)
where did you guys find poly bushes for the tr7? I've almost given up on my quest to find them
