    Great looking car. Very unique on the modern roads where all cars now look the same. An enjoyable, & fun drive too!

    Nice video just found it. I've had my TR7 for about 7 years now having resurrected it from a previous owner that had it in a container for around 20 years. I will admit when they first came out I was a hater ... but acquiring the car from a friend (very long story) at the insistence of my then 9 year old I quickly came to be a fan. I have been through the mechanical twice now and it is absolutely debugged with many improvements. Upcoming upgrades will be a hi performance engine I will build, custom EFI and conversion to a 5 speed as well as lower/stiffer springs, bushings, shocks, sway bars as well as battery relocation, bumper lightening and some inteerior upgrades. My now coming on 16 year old will eventually get the car ... but not ill I'm finished with it and my 30 year old is jealous. lol

      Well, you'll just have to buy a second TR7 for your son when the time comes. Make sure you join the TR Drivers Club if you haven't already (www.trdrivers.club) and hook up for the virtual national weekend being planned for the second weekend of July I believe. Maybe we'll all be able to get together again next year and show off our cars. Good luck with all the work you are planning although I'm not so sure about the downgrade to a 5 speed if you are lucky enough to have a 4 speed. The 4 speeders are the rare ones now and quite a bit quicker and better handling than a 5 speed. Triumph Spitfire race cars are upgraded with TR7 4 speed components and get taken up to as much as 200bhp so don't be fooled by some of the nonsense that's been printed over the years.

      @@JohnGClancy I'll check them out, keeping and building TRs in Western Canada is very different than England. Few around, challenging parts access let alone high performance. That said currently looking at a DHC for an extreme project for this winter as well as the major performance upgrades for the DHC I currently have.

    I went in a TR7 in the late 1970's. The owner was disappointed because it didn't accelerate quickly and had a number of build issues. His next car was a MK1 Golf GTI, which set the standard for all hot hatches, possibly only beaten by the 1.6L GTi Peugeot 205!.

    • @JohnGClancy
      @JohnGClancy  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      None were as quick as a TR7 with the full TriumphTune kit applied. That's one of the reasons the whole thing appealed to me so much. A TR7 that actually went and handled as well as it looked was simply too enticing an opportunity to miss. We were out in it yesterday and the acceleration capability is still breathtaking all these years later.
      John.

      Not as big as we once were Rupert but extremely important we survived to the present day as we've almost single handedly saved the TR7 species in the UK. Fortunately the TR Register are much more positive towards these cars as well so the future is now looking rather positive. And today I gave the go ahead for the first TR7 panel reproduction following BMH scrapping the press tools. It's all systems go at the TR Drivers Club in conjunction with the TR Spares Development Fund.

    I've got a 1980 TR7, with a Doli Sprint engine and Webers. It still has the original petrol tank and no sign of any leaks.

    • @JohnGClancy
      @JohnGClancy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the later, deeper petrol filler recess was more successful at keeping water out. After shooting this video I cut my old petrol tank open and there was no sign of rust at all so it was a faulty tank when it was installed. That explains the pervasive smell of petrol over the intervening years then! But it also proves that the leatherette cover I fashioned over the petrol cap has been successful. And I've driven through some truly awful weather in the time it's been on there so to get no water into the tank in 11 or 12 years is very good to know.
      Hope to meet up with you at the TRDC national at Gaydon next year Fred. I like to see a TR7 with a pair of Weber carbs as the engines then look so similar to the rally cars, particularly with the 16 valve of course.

    • @Poz100
      @Poz100 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine, along with many of my Wedge aficionados, had its original tank replaced at around 30 years old. Rusted from the inside out on its lower leading edge. I replaced it over a weekend. If you’re a confident home mechanic, they’re easy enough to convert properly to Rover V8 spec.

    Dynamic, detailed and very entertaining as always! Tha only question I have is why do you never add music to your video-essays? Do copy-rights on youtube these days make it very complicated to work with? Or, is it your predetermined choice?

    • @JohnGClancy
      @JohnGClancy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have applied music to quite a few over the years Dmitri but despite having paid for the usage of such music there is always someone trying to take ownership of your work due to that music. I have to put in an appeal to explain that I've paid for it which has always worked up to now but it's a hassle I can do without.
      The TR7 has just taken us on a 500 mile trip so is now resting in the pull over garage outside. Jolly good fun but you can't be anonymous driving one of these cars any longer. John.

A bot, swhich makes a grown man waste his time on this nonsense. In a way, we are in the matrix. One simple "1" or "0" in a code and a living-breathing person is performing a task.

    I'm not a particular fan of Hammerite, I find it rather brittle, much preferring an industrial paint, such as Micaceous Iron Oxide Phenolic Tung Oil underneath the car, followed by regular primer and paint. Inside the doors etc, I use a Chrome Dioxide paint.

      @JohnGClancy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The TR7 is a completely different car from a different era so it's difficult to compare them other than to say that if you prefer an older, more traditional type of sports car from 1950s and 1960s technology then the MG is the one to go for. If you want to experience tenacious handling (except in damp or wet conditions I hasten to add!) and a car that young boys think is something just created for the future, then a TR7 is the one to go for. Stick a few TriumphTune parts in a TR7 and you can have a bit of a road burner for very little money indeed.
      John.

    8:07 Mate please tell me you're not under that car supported only by a jack on the differential. Tell me there are some jack stands that I'm not seeing

    • @JohnGClancy
      @JohnGClancy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The jack was only there for extra support but the good ol' TR was so thoroughly packed underneath that there was no way it was going anywhere. In fact, I had duties at the NEC Classic Motor Show so we left it in the air for a week or so while I was away. I don't like getting under a car at all so I'm always a bit over the top when jacking a car up.

  • @lordleonusa

    The TR7 was a great design sadly let down by poor quality assembly at Speke. Like many Triumph cars, with proper protection against rust and good maintenance, they can give many years of faithful service. (I've owned Heralds and Vitesse cars since March 1981, with Triumphs in our tamily since May 1978)

      Well it is quicker than a TR6 but despite the hardest TriumphTune suspension settings it still has a very comfortable ride. And the steering is light and precise too so it's a TR7 alright.

    Not sure two full rebuilds and two tanks show it to be a good design.

    • @JohnGClancy
      @JohnGClancy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      47 years old and getting on for 200,000 miles. Only one rebuild though. There was nothing wrong with the overall design but they weren't all built as well as they should have been. The wax injection engineered into the TR7 does not appear to have been adhered to all the time on the production lines but models that were styled, designed and engineered a few years later all benefited from the revolutionary work that went into TR7.
      John.
