As a black guy, I'm ashamed to say that I used to believe in this anti-woke trash. It feels so bad listening to the same dogshit talking points I used to buy into. I used to think I was smart for being black and anti-woke. I stopped listening to this stuff after realising it just made me miserable, even though I still bought into that stuff. I watched other content and found out some content creators I liked were trans or gay. I found out LGBT+ people didn't wanna shove "the gay" down my throat and that their issues should be taken seriously. Also, slowly realising over the years that anti-woke people probably hate me and that racism is actually real (shocker) I was able to start reflecting on the shit that was feed to me. A part of me hopes that a lot of these people are just young and will grow out of it. Unfortunately, it's an easy pipeline to fall into if you, don't know much about the world, history and if you're susceptible to ragebait AKA a teenager.

I used to be super homophobic and “anti sjw feminist owned” when I was a teen due to personal anger and religious brainwashing too. I was both queer and female but was shamed for it so I felt like “if I can’t be happy nobody can.” Once I went to a secular school for the first time in my life at 19 I had the crazy revelation that queer people are regular people. Insane I know 😱 but I’m still embarrassed that I had to even “unlearn” my hatred in the first place.
Normally I really hate it when people accuse homophobic or transphobic people of being closeted, but in this case, especially given the vtuber avatar... This is one of those rare exceptions where I feel like the gentleman Doth protest too much and may be compensating for being trapped in a closet of their own making. oh my. Right now I'm playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I enjoy the story but my the female characters. Sometimes they just show to your face the female character's breasts for no reason. Today, I realize that sometimes, they make their breasts move for no reason. I remember an emotional scene, and suddenly zoom on the breast, it totally throw me out the mood. I feel like the game is telling me to masturbate all the time. Male characters don't have the same treatment (they give the most generic appearance ever to their main character). Though this is well known (I was warned), you always find people who say that if you dare complaining, you are against women empowerment (cause you supposedly don't want them to be sexy) and "why are you complaining, are you not men" (no I'm not, and even if I was, I'm not playing a game like this to ). It's not even that "women should not be sexy in games". They can, and the male characters often are. But in the way their bodies are shown and their personality is written, male characters are sexy but not treated as sexual objects. It's not crazy to ask the same for female characters. And if they are ugly, I don't care! I am not here for that...

There’s a part of me so amused at the people that think they don’t use pronouns. There’s a part of me sad to know they’re uneducated enough to not know what pronouns are. I’m definitely upset when I realise how many of them are middle aged adults almost as old as me. I’m embarrassed of too many Gen X and millenials, but as we get older and they don’t move with the times, it’s inevitable sadly. I can safely say with confidence that ‘They/Them’ isn’t this exclusive plural pronoun that people try and make it out to be all the time, and no ‘Singular They’ isn’t an exclusive non-binary term either. It’s basically used when you don’t know the gender of the individual you’re talking about, for example if someone asks you about a person you’ve never heard of (And their name doesn’t have a clear gender identification, maybe a foreign name or a unisex name like my own) you can respond with “Sorry I don’t know who *they* are”. Never in my life have I seen people *regularly* say “Sorry I don’t know who he or she is” in a casual conversation, it’s always “they” or “them” when they don’t know the gender of the individual. It's really sad, and avoiding it requires a lot of humility, self-awareness, an ability to empathize with people who are very different from you(which cis men have a particular problem with due to patriarchal conditioning giving them a fear and resentment of their own humanity, and a deeply rooted belief that their worth and value(as well as the worth and value of those around them) is intrinsically linked to their ability to dominate others and produce wealth), willingness to do your own research and think for yourself instead of being lured into a false sense of community through shared bias. It's the path of least resistance and requires the least amount of critical thinking or self-critique.

Queer Coded manga/anime goes back further to the 70's and maybe older (lost media related issues makes it hard to know if any existed previously). The 70's were a turning point for the complexity of how comic/manga characters in stories were presented. In the West think Spider-Man's relatability compared to Batman, or other DC characters. In the Manga side of things we have characters like: Oscar François de Jarjayes (The Rose of Versaillis), and Amuro or Char (The original Gundam). Oscar being a woman character raised to be a man and knight and portrayed as a romantic love interest for Marie Antoinette. Meanwhile Yoshiyuki Tomino, has stated he wrote Char and Amuro with intentions to be read as "sensual". It just falls to the issue of personal biases, and media literacy when taking in art whether the watcher wants to open up to a different point of view on things. Which many wouldn't admit to, as D'Angel keeps noticing as he did his evidence gathering for this video.

Sadly it's working as intended. I've been getting those too and it seems it's from TH-cam's attempt to push people outside of their usual bubble of what they watch. As this problem showed up around the same time as that little bubble asking if you want new things recommended did. I've even said no a billion times already and they still push me to it and still keep asking me.
Also, they've already told us what makes a "good" gay character for them. The old cartoons. Where gay characters were written "subtly" and "you couldn't tell that they were gay." In other words, blatant censorship.

Hello. I'm a feminist woman with an anime profile pic and username. Been in the anime community for... Wow, 2 decades at this point. I just came back from a study abroad trip to Japan to study Japanese. Now that you know my credentials, I can give my analysis on why so many anti-woke people like anime and have anime profile pictures. And yes, it is due to misogynistic and racist reasons. There's this belief in that community that because Japan hasn't adapted the feminist movement, that it's the epitome of a perfect society. They think Japanese women are naturally submissive and yes, they do get their views of Japan from anime. And of course, let's not forget the blatant fan service that exists in anime. Obviously, this is all a fantasy. Yes, the feminist movement has been slow in Japan, but it does exist and it is rising. There's also a rising LGBT movement. Since I was there in June, I can tell you that I saw so many flyers for resources and organizations for LGBT people. As much as I love anime and the anime community and how there's plenty of queer folk in that community, I've also met my fair share of creeps in my time there. I've also been disrespected for my opinions as a woman there numerous times. And of course, many of those assholes would most likely be considered anti-woke now. I do think they're in the minority though. Either that or most of them are so much basement-dwellers that they're too scared to meet other fans in conventions. Anyway, that's my take on it. Thank you for sharing your insights. When I was active in the anime community in my teens I got lucky and didnt really encounter the basement dwellers. People at my local anime con were so cool and accepting and cosplay gave me an outlet to play with gender expression in a safe environment. I was actually surprised when I later found out that this was not the case in all online spaces but at that point my interests had shifted anyway.

I’m in a FB group called The Nerds District, and it’s been flooded with creeps complaining that Asian game devs are better because they haven’t ‘sold out’ to DEI, making the women sexier and more feminine. The irony is, many of the female characters they’re praising look like kids and don’t even represent real Asian women. (I’m half-Asian, by the way.) Meanwhile, they’re mad at Western devs for creating more ‘realistic’ women-i.e., not all tiny with giant chests. As if ‘Western’ is just one monolith. 😂 And of course, they’re posting the worst low-res comparisons to prove their point. It’s wild. The kicker? We all explain we care about gameplay, not treating it like a porn option. Plus, you barely see your character since most games use a third-person view from behind. And with women making up almost 50% of gamers, including female characters isn’t a PR move-it’s just reality.

This is my exact issue with this video, the audience is basically in an echo chamber but instead of attacking the points of the creator keeping that chamber closed he attacks the misinformed audience. Ik that’s not the point you were making but it explains my thoughts about the cycle very well. This happens with A LOT of terms that start off rooted in reality, but especially terms that originate from marginalized communities: "Woke", "pickme", "Karens", etc. are all prime examples. The wider online culture gets ahold of them and then either waters them down or runs with them in all sorts of different directions.
For me, it's the overly performative behavior of some in their attempt to help political correctness that muddies the term woke. 😅 For example, "this EAsian character isn't drawn Asian enough. I remember in my first year of my game design degree, in the art module we had to go through the process of character design, which included research. We could pick the character's genre ourselves but we had to research and draw it from scratch. I decided to do a woman detective character, because I like drawing women and I also love mystery stories. I remember I gave her a strong jawline, something I have myself, I also have her Tanned skin, and blemishes, something I hadn't seen much on women in video games. I went to find stuff about how women in beauty games often have insane beauty standards or are sexualised. I started looking around for people talking about it. I found a video with a title like "women in video games are 'ugly'" With the quotation marks and the state of youtube I thought it was just a clickbait video title, it was also made by a woman! Except.. she went on to rant about how it just seemed to her that the women in video games were women that couldn't take care of themselves, and got angry about peach fuzz and 'man faces' but some of the specifics were things she had? I just felt bad for her.

I'm team 'don't care' and I wish more people were. You do you, I do me. I'm all for trans rights but I hate that it needs fighting for and I hate people care. I have the luxury of fitting the majorities, so I can just go wherever and be whatever, I wish that for all people. Not in a rude way, but wouldn't it be great if everyones response to someone being gay was 'okay, don't care'? People are so much more, why do I get to be 'creative, smart and funny'? Because my gender, race or orientation are non issues. I'd love it if that could be a non issue for everyone. I'm against needing wokeness but that's as close as I get to those loons.

As white cis-male I am really embarassed by those anti-woke trash. Like you said - there are valid reasons fo criticism in modern media - but this trend of superfluos hate (in hunt for engagement from angry far-right losers) drags it down. I love LGBTQ+ representation in media - it gives me opportunity for empathy with someone who doesn't share my experiences. Which is main reason we eangage with fiction. Not all representation is equal, but it kinda get free pass if it's bad, since the amount of whitewashing in past 100+ years is so massive, few bad/forced POC/LGBTQ+ character inserts won't harm anyone (and won't break the bank).
What a lot of these people who complain about poorly written characters fail to realize is the entire entertainment industry goes through these growing pains or poorly written characters. Just look at almost any early 2000s gaming protagonist. Nearly all of them were white and their personalities boiled down to, angry and good with guns. With the exception of Japanese games which were waist deep in the trenches of rpgs, fighting games or dating sims.

Being LGBT, am with you there on the not saying what they mean pissing me off more, and think I know why. You can kind of respect an honest bigot a lot more, because they're willing to just come out and say that the problem is you're gay, or a transwoman, or don't have the right skin color, or just that you're a woman. Many of which can be tied back to 4chan, to which outcasts and incels from all walks of life gathered to have all of their less "acceptable" opinions be affirmed and echoed back to them. There was a big "meme" back then of drawing cute anime girls, usually from K-On, in Nazi attire. For the less edgy, this was simply a dark joke, with the humor being the juxtaposition between the cute and the extreme. For the more edgy, this was simply combining two interests that they cared a lot about. A lot of anime, especially of the Isekai and Harem genres, have a lot of power fantasies that are appealing to incels.

As a black guy, I'm ashamed to say that I used to believe in this anti-woke trash. It feels so bad listening to the same dogshit talking points I used to buy into. I used to think I was smart for being black and anti-woke. I stopped listening to this stuff after realising it just made me miserable, even though I still bought into that stuff. I watched other content and found out some content creators I liked were trans or gay. I found out LGBT+ people didn't wanna shove "the gay" down my throat and that their issues should be taken seriously. Also, slowly realising over the years that anti-woke people probably hate me and that racism is actually real (shocker) I was able to start reflecting on the shit that was feed to me. A part of me hopes that a lot of these people are just young and will grow out of it. Unfortunately, it's an easy pipeline to fall into if you, don't know much about the world, history and if you're susceptible to ragebait AKA a teenager.

oh my. Right now I'm playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I enjoy the story but my the female characters. Sometimes they just show to your face the female character's breasts for no reason. Today, I realize that sometimes, they make their breasts move for no reason. I remember an emotional scene, and suddenly zoom on the breast, it totally throw me out the mood. I feel like the game is telling me to masturbate all the time. Male characters don't have the same treatment (they give the most generic appearance ever to their main character). Though this is well known (I was warned), you always find people who say that if you dare complaining, you are against women empowerment (cause you supposedly don't want them to be sexy) and "why are you complaining, are you not men" (no I'm not, and even if I was, I'm not playing a game like this to ).
It's not even that "women should not be sexy in games". They can, and the male characters often are. But in the way their bodies are shown and their personality is written, male characters are sexy but not treated as sexual objects. It's not crazy to ask the same for female characters. And if they are ugly, I don't care! I am not here for that...

I can safely say with confidence that ‘They/Them’ isn’t this exclusive plural pronoun that people try and make it out to be all the time, and no ‘Singular They’ isn’t an exclusive non-binary term either.
It’s basically used when you don’t know the gender of the individual you’re talking about, for example if someone asks you about a person you’ve never heard of (And their name doesn’t have a clear gender identification, maybe a foreign name or a unisex name like my own) you can respond with “Sorry I don’t know who *they* are”.
Never in my life have I seen people *regularly* say “Sorry I don’t know who he or she is” in a casual conversation, it’s always “they” or “them” when they don’t know the gender of the individual.
There’s the pronoun “one” but if you said something like “I don’t know who one is” you’d likely be seen as an old-fashioned or posh individual, or maybe even a weirdo to some people.
My English teachers never gave out to me for the use of ‘singular they’, in fact they all used it themselves, my family, friends, random strangers, political figures, all use ‘singular they’ when they speak English.

Lack of media literacy, lack of cultural identity due to living in a falsified meritocracy under capitalism, fear that is constantly being stoked and catastrophized by mainstream media. There are a lot of very valid reasons that this happens to folks. It's really sad, and avoiding it requires a lot of humility, self-awareness, an ability to empathize with people who are very different from you(which cis men have a particular problem with due to patriarchal conditioning giving them a fear and resentment of their own humanity, and a deeply rooted belief that their worth and value(as well as the worth and value of those around them) is intrinsically linked to their ability to dominate others and produce wealth), willingness to do your own research and think for yourself instead of being lured into a false sense of community through shared bias. It's the path of least resistance and requires the least amount of critical thinking or self-critique.

What I dislike about "anti-woke" is that even if they have legitimate issues (like how Concord's character designs are just horrible), they ruin it by saying "oh it failed because its woke'. The 70's were a turning point for the complexity of how comic/manga characters in stories were presented. In the West think Spider-Man's relatability compared to Batman, or other DC characters. In the Manga side of things we have characters like: Oscar François de Jarjayes (The Rose of Versaillis), and Amuro or Char (The original Gundam). Oscar being a woman character raised to be a man and knight and portrayed as a romantic love interest for Marie Antoinette. Meanwhile Yoshiyuki Tomino, has stated he wrote Char and Amuro with intentions to be read as "sensual".
It just falls to the issue of personal biases, and media literacy when taking in art whether the watcher wants to open up to a different point of view on things. Which many wouldn't admit to, as D'Angel keeps noticing as he did his evidence gathering for this video.

Hello. I'm a feminist woman with an anime profile pic and username. Been in the anime community for... Wow, 2 decades at this point. I just came back from a study abroad trip to Japan to study Japanese. Now that you know my credentials, I can give my analysis on why so many anti-woke people like anime and have anime profile pictures. And yes, it is due to misogynistic and racist reasons. There's this belief in that community that because Japan hasn't adapted the feminist movement, that it's the epitome of a perfect society. They think Japanese women are naturally submissive and yes, they do get their views of Japan from anime. And of course, let's not forget the blatant fan service that exists in anime. Obviously, this is all a fantasy. Yes, the feminist movement has been slow in Japan, but it does exist and it is rising. There's also a rising LGBT movement. Since I was there in June, I can tell you that I saw so many flyers for resources and organizations for LGBT people. As much as I love anime and the anime community and how there's plenty of queer folk in that community, I've also met my fair share of creeps in my time there. I've also been disrespected for my opinions as a woman there numerous times. And of course, many of those assholes would most likely be considered anti-woke now. I do think they're in the minority though. Either that or most of them are so much basement-dwellers that they're too scared to meet other fans in conventions. Anyway, that's my take on it. Thank you for sharing your insights. When I was active in the anime community in my teens I got lucky and didnt really encounter the basement dwellers. People at my local anime con were so cool and accepting and cosplay gave me an outlet to play with gender expression in a safe environment. I was actually surprised when I later found out that this was not the case in all online spaces but at that point my interests had shifted anyway.

This is my exact issue with this video, the audience is basically in an echo chamber but instead of attacking the points of the creator keeping that chamber closed he attacks the misinformed audience. This happens with A LOT of terms that start off rooted in reality, but especially terms that originate from marginalized communities: "Woke", "pickme", "Karens", etc. are all prime examples. The wider online culture gets ahold of them and then either waters them down or runs with them in all sorts of different directions.

I remember in my first year of my game design degree, in the art module we had to go through the process of character design, which included research. We could pick the character's genre ourselves but we had to research and draw it from scratch.
I decided to do a woman detective character, because I like drawing women and I also love mystery stories.
I remember I gave her a strong jawline, something I have myself, I also have her Tanned skin, and blemishes, something I hadn't seen much on women in video games.

As white cis-male I am really embarassed by those anti-woke trash. Like you said - there are valid reasons fo criticism in modern media - but this trend of superfluos hate (in hunt for engagement from angry far-right losers) drags it down.
I love LGBTQ+ representation in media - it gives me opportunity for empathy with someone who doesn't share my experiences. Which is main reason we eangage with fiction.
Not all representation is equal, but it kinda get free pass if it's bad, since the amount of whitewashing in past 100+ years is so massive, few bad/forced POC/LGBTQ+ character inserts won't harm anyone (and won't break the bank).
What a lot of these people who complain about poorly written characters fail to realize is the entire entertainment industry goes through these growing pains or poorly written characters. Just look at almost any early 2000s gaming protagonist. Nearly all of them were white and their personalities boiled down to, angry and good with guns. With the exception of Japanese games which were waist deep in the trenches of rpgs, fighting games or dating sims.
PleeeaaaaAAASE don't conflate your identity and race with political beliefs. Don't feel shame for you existing. Only hold yourself accountable for your own actions or inactions you've personally done!

As a white, queer woman, I am openly critical of White Feminism/Feminists™ and strive to create safe spaces for people of color in queer/women-friendly spaces. Being LGBT, am with you there on the not saying what they mean pissing me off more, and think I know why. You can kind of respect an honest bigot a lot more, because they're willing to just come out and say that the problem is you're gay, or a transwoman, or don't have the right skin color, or just that you're a woman.
The others are basically trying to do some performative bullshit so they can be thought of as still socially acceptable, rather than just being a bigot, because to our credit, we're advancing more towards the point where publicly being known as a bigot is just something that's less and less socially acceptable, and "but I have x friends" is known to be as hollow a protest as it is.
There's a weird and refreshing honesty to bigots who say exactly what they mean, since they're not even bothering to try to trick you in to thinking that you're not actually the thing they have the problem with.

A lot of anime culture has grassroots in message boards. Many of which can be tied back to 4chan, to which outcasts and incels from all walks of life gathered to have all of their less "acceptable" opinions be affirmed and echoed back to them. There was a big "meme" back then of drawing cute anime girls, usually from K-On, in Nazi attire. For the less edgy, this was simply a dark joke, with the humor being the juxtaposition between the cute and the extreme. For the more edgy, this was simply combining two interests that they cared a lot about.
A lot of anime, especially of the Isekai and Harem genres, have a lot of power fantasies that are appealing to incels.
the funniest part of this is if you spend even a second in "woke" fandom spaces you very quickly find people being hypercritical of queer characters or characters of color because we want to be represented well and it is VERY obvious when they're just pandering to us as opposed to actually wanting to write a compelling character with those traits
