I once met a member of the Gideon when I took a walk with my dog. I accidentally threw the ball for my dog too high and it got stuck in a tree. He helped me to get it out of the tree and gave me a bible afterwards. He said he always has a couple of them in his pocket for moments like this.

l hope you don't find d it offensive that your comment made me laugh out loud. just the way l take things literally, "l keep Bible on hand for moments like this" meaning l have to help people get dog's toys out of trees. just out of curiosity, what did you do with the Bible he gave you?

One time I let one stay at my house. The next day, there was a Bible in the crack of the couch, in my bathtub, in my cereal box, in my underwear drawer, in my dog, on my ceiling fan, clogging the toilet, taped to my back, and in my milk carton.

As a child I was so confused by the random bibles in the hotel rooms I stayed in with the mysterious "placed by the gideons" message engraved on them. I fantasized that were some kind of christian ninjas who would jump through the window, place the bible, then stealthily flip back out the window.

Love the Gideons. They always show up handing out small Bibles in neat travel size when I needed one 😊 Got one at uni that was helpful for my studies. When I just could not find anymore, I luckily met a Gideon member giving me another one. Very kind and good people!

Okay, disclaimer: I am an Evangelical Christian, a hotel desk clerk, and know of at least one member of the Gideons attending my church. My experience is that people do read the Gideon bibles in the rooms, and they do quite often take them with them. I have specifically had complaints at the front desk when a room does not contain a Bible. I have had Hispanic guests ask if we have Bibles in Spanish.
I have had customers thank me for the Bibles and ask if they can keep one. I always tell them yes. I remember one elderly lady who stayed with us for about 3 months read through the entire Bible during her stay.
I see the work of the Gideons as a way of quietly fulfilling Christ's command to "Go into all the world and proclaim the good news" in a way that isn't argumentative. No one is forced to pick up and read. Just like on TH-cam where I often read comments of "If you don't like something, don't watch." If you don't want to read, simply don't. Or do; as it is written, "Taste and see that the Lord is good." (Psalm 34:8)

Haha yes I don’t believe they read the bible. No one does. It’s actually a known fact that if your in a hotel your a sinner. For you have your own walls but yet your not within in them. Like jail it’s not within your walls. Those who travel and prefer to be surrounded by walls of the unknown are sinners. Who actually feels loved by the walls you worked hard for? People take love for granted, and their surroundings, who needs walls? Gods not gonna pay for your wall! Your blood sweat, tears, are gonna pay for the walls you call home.

The Gideons want people to take the Bibles. They also hand them out outside of high schools and universities. They don't open air preach like you'd expect, they just hand them out, you can take it or leave it. When I was in high school, I saw them twice after school. They're very polite and respectful to people who don't want a copy. It's honestly a great ministry.

I used to travel a lot and since I reckoned that people with deep problems, or who were troubled, would take the time to open the hotel Bible, I would leave $5 in the middle of the Bible in the area of Psalms 23. I haven't traveled for many years, but I think I will do that again when I travel again.

Not Your Everyday Timelord There's never any backlash when channels similar to his subtly refer to religion as things like "science fiction". So I think it's not entirely to preserve his reputation and rather he legitimately wishes to respect people's beliefs. That's something I really like about his channel. He allows his beliefs to influence his content without attempting to discredit what others believe (unless i'm missing any videos where he does, which i think is unlikely).

A couple of years before my mom passed away, she was staying in a motel and picked up the Bible to read. She mistakenly took it with her when she left. When she realized this, she called the Gideons on the phone. They told her that she had made their day because that was the whole purpose for distributing the Bibles. They want people who need them to take them.

I doubt that. A couple of years ago a muslim organization in Germany gave away free copies of the qu'ran at info-tables in inner-cities. That was heavily critized as "religious propaganda" and politicians sought means to put a stop to it (they didn't find any though).
And I bet: As soon as a muslim, or hindu or whatever equivalent of the gideon society pops up, the gideon bible will become so large, the rooms won't be able to accomodate further books...

Even though I wouldn't mind reading the Bible but that Hindu holy book would have most likely made for quite interesting read assuming it was in english of course.Just a little interest tib bit of information is the reason why the Hindu god Ghanesh is depicted as having the head of an Elephant is because when Ghanesh was a young boy his father who was the Hindu god of destruction Shiva in a fit of rage cut off Ghanesh head and in order for Ghanesh to be brought back to life the gods had to replace Ghaneshs head with the head of an elephant.

The Gideons International is a great ministry. I've found their Bibles in a few motel rooms. And, upon staying in a motel room without one, I made sure to leave one of my own Gideon Bibles there. My prayer is that it will reach someone who isn't saved and that they'd read it and come to salvation. For those who don't know, there is always brief Gospel message in the back. At least read the back page or two. There is also a few pages in the front with verses pertaining to various needs. Whether you are feeling anxious, angry, bitter, or concerned about something else, there are likely a few verses listed there to help you. If you aren't already a Christian, feel free to check it out with an open mind. You've got nothing to loose and everything to gain. If you're a Christian already, read it for growth. It never hearts to read a bit more of God's Word.

3:50 One problem though. If there are only 2,190 days in 6 years, how can each bible have 2,300 readers during the same period? Assuming 25% of the people actually read the bible, and the room is occupied every night with a different guest, we'd be looking at somewhere around 550 readers. Or around 25 years to reach 2,300 readers.
    Food for thought.

I feel like your synopsis of Gideon's story doesn't really do it justice.
Gideon didn't just lead a tiny army against a massive one; he followed God's orders and *made his army smaller* because God thought it was too big and it wouldn't be obvious He was the one who won the battle. They originally had, I believe, 32,000 men (against 100,000) and God told Gideon to tell anyone who was afraid to go home. Then they ended up with about 10,000 i think and God told him to take them to a river and see how they drink from it, the people who put down their weapons and cupped the water in their hands were sent away while the ones that drank like a dog so they wouldn't let their guard down were kept. He ended up with 300 people against 100,000. That night God had Gideon give each man a pot, a torch, and a horn and told them to spread out and surround the camp. When everybody was in place they broke their pots, lit their torches, and blew their horns with a battle cry. The enemy thought they were being attacked by a massive army and started killing each other thinking they were the enemy. Gideon and his army just picked off the ones that were left.
It's one of my favorite stories in the Bible because of how ridiculous it is. First he tells most of his army to go home, then he fired the ones who don't drink right and then he makes enemy think they're killing each other. XD

BimLau Yomashitobi I feel it's a combination of context and how well u know the lauguage ur translating to. for example I know English and I translate Korean but I'm not completely fluent so I tend to paraphrase. That is the problem with translations, they are rarely 100% accurate. And when you get into books like the Bible, Gita, Herodotus, etc, that have been translated several times, and the original languages are dead ... it's why we wind up with scholars who follow one interpretation versus various others. This would make a very good Today I Found Out About. @todayifoundoutabout

I translate German to English and it really does come down to how well you know the other language, including idioms and slang, as well as the overall context. As in how many ways can one translate even just a simple word like "good" for instance. But I mainly stick to technical/patent translations.... not near as many "creative" decisions to make!

    • @benjamindrexler9635
      @benjamindrexler9635 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Translators are supposed to carefully study how both languages are used, and try to make a careful judgement about which close synonym is best used. Very few languages have exact word-for-word translations, and sometimes two seemingly very different words can be used interchangeably (and it can be helpful to compare them to better understand the meaning if you cannot read the original language.) Of course, when directly translating words, you can make a sentence almost unintelligible due to differences in grammatical structure, and so some re-arrangement is required.
When translating something very old, it is also sometimes necessary to not exactly translate certain words. With changing times and cultures, words which hold certain meanings at one time and place can seem random in modern times.
Both of these are issues that biblical translators have to deal with, which is most of the reason that there are so many versions of the Bible that differ in minor ways, such as the NIV, NKJ and ESV, to name only a few.

Can we put a book shelf in every hotel room that acts as a nightstand? You could have the gideon bibles and all that jazz and you could also sell shelf space to publishing companies who maybe have extra copies of books that need to be moved, also maybe offer some local magazines about the city and it's attractions. Most people probably won't read them (I take my own books to hotels if I'm staying for more than a night) but it's a nice option. It doesn't have to be a large bookshelf either, just a small one that doubles as a nightstand.

    • @abdelpizarro

easter is set to be on a sunday after a specific cicle of a full moon, so because it favors to be specifically on sunday (the day itself not the number of the day) is imposible to give it a specific number because every year the days changes around because of the way we set the calendar.
Christmas is set to be the 25th because someone decided to make it the 25th, much like a birthday you celebrate it on a specific day(number) disregarding it can fall on sunday, monday, friday wed... etc.
The bible tell that Jesus dies on a preparation day (friday), rested in the grave on sabbath (saturday) resurrected on the first day of the week (Sunday) this is way is celebrated that day. Christmas is the other hand is not biblical in any means, there is no set day of Christ's birth so man has made a false celebration of it on the 25th.

A few years ago I was at a hotel in South Dakota for a renaissance festival joust at which I was/am a squire. My sister, 10 years old at the time, went with that year. She was looking around in the hotel room and opened up the drawer and said that somebody forgot their Bible when they left. I informed her that there's an organization that leaves them in hotel rooms in case people want to read them. She slowly closed the drawer and said "...oh. I'm agnostic so I don't really need to read that if I don't want to." I didn't even know she was familiar with agnosticism but she proceeded to explain it to me and she nailed it. This is the same child who, at 5 or 6 years old, was explaining colliding galaxies to my younger brother who was 15 or 16 at the time (he already knew about them but he was being enthusiastic about it when she told him) so idk why I was still surprised about her knowledge of these things.
But on the subject of Bibles in hotel rooms, I'm an atheist and there are bigger things for me to worry about than a Bible in a room where I'm just gonna stay for a night or two. I bring my own reading material and the Bible is there for people who want to read it so I don't give two shits whether there's a Bible, a Qur'an, or any other religious texts because it does not affect me one way or another. I've got bigger fish to fry.

Apparently, the hotels of the era were rather rough places to stay: other traveling salesmen tended to play poker, get drunk, and bring prostitutes back to their rooms, and the Gideons felt that reading Bibles might be a more dignified way for men to spend their nights at hotels.

During my early years of school, the Absent Seizure would take place in class. During the seizures my vision would blur, and I would go into a trans like state. I could always snap out of the seizures, and they never cause accidents. I never though anyone was aware of them, until I was talking to a friend that I grew up with. He said that I had a habit of staring off into space.
My wife would comment that I would go off into Mooneyland (Mooney is my last name). I replied that if she ever went there, then she'd never come back. The Absent Seizures do not bother me. Actually they are very relaxing, I can go into deep concentration. I have used them to concentrate on problem, and I come up with an answer.
Currently I am getting a patent for one of my invention. I made the invention completely in my mind, during Absent Seizures. I would like to talk about the invention, but I do not have a patent yet.

Now take a gander at the hypocrisy of religious people, they like science and evidence only when it fits their ideology (otherwise everyone would be an atheist). So when you have 85% of the population and more importantly world leaders believing in something with absolutely no scientific evidence to back it up, you get a little frustrated. How could i possibly have respect for someone who doesn't have even a basic understanding of how shit works.

We stay in hotels a lot, and I always read take the Bible and read few pages... the first time I read it, their was a verse at the beginning and it was translated into many languages one of them is Arabic( my first language) and I was very surprised to see the word God translated to the Arabic word الله (Allah). And their are many similarities between the Quran and the Bible. I fund it very interesting to read other holy sculptures!! Respect to all religions and beliefs out their.🤗

I always enjoy talking to Muslim coworkers and friends about the similarities and differences in those religions. I was sort of surprised to find that Jesus appears in Islam, where he is regarded as an important prophet, and a lot less surprised that much of the Bible's Old Testament content has analogues in the Quran. Many Christians would be familiar with relatives of the word/title/name Allah, like El, Elah, Alaha, and Elohim.
The fellow below who claimed the Quran is "based of Holy Bible" isn't quite right - rather, the Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions share ancestry in the traditions, laws, mythologies, religions, and faiths of the people living in the Middle East. They are certainly not identical texts and certainly do not share identical influences and histories, but Bible and the Quran in many respects certainly can be thought of as two different versions of the same basic story told by two different witnesses, and have more in common than they do in conflict.

Pietyr Ayday because the Koran is so much newer than the Bible but has so much of the same content.

    • @pietrayday9915
      @pietrayday9915 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      But, what's the point?
Both the Bible and Koran have precedents in much older Central Asian mythology. The flood story, for example, appears in one of the most ancient known texts, the Epic of Gilgamesh, dated about 5000 years old, the creation story appears in Zoroastrian texts with origins dating to about 3500 years old, the Book of Proverbs has striking similarities to the Instruction of Amenomope dated to over 3200 years old, and the angelic rebellion and the serpent of Eden appears in the Enuma Elish dated to over 3000 years old (in comparison, the earliest known surviving Biblical texts, the Dead Sea Scrolls, are a little over 2000 years old).
You can make of that whatever you want - atheists tend to point to such things and try to say that the Bible "plagiarized" pagan mythology. But, you can also take it as a sign that the content of the Bible was not some sort of secret known only to a handful of ancient Hebrew scholars, but rather was part of a body of very influential culture well-known and well-traveled throughout the ancient world through oral tradition and the occasional ancient texts of any number of different religions and peoples long before the Essenes recorded them in the oldest known versions of the Bible, effectively codifying them for the modern Christian world over 2000 years ago (just before Mohammed and his followers, apparently independently, codified another version for the Muslim world over 1400 years ago, and just after the Great Assembly codified the Tanakh for the Jewish world over 2400 years ago, based on the Torah and other texts dating back as much as 2800 years ago): that people all over the ancient world knew subtle variations on these stories well centuries before the Jews, Christians, and Muslims recorded them in no way discounts anything in the Tanakh, Bible or the Koran, but rather tends to support both the Bible and Koran as texts with extremely ancient origins from among some of the most ancient civilizations known to archaeology, ancient origins that to this day continue to influence the philosophy, religion, art, government, science, and culture of most of the modern world.
And then, there's a question of WHICH Bible you are talking about - the earliest Christian Church - led by Jesus and His apostles, didn't have one a Bible at all, the earliest Bibles are lost to time and differ from the Catholic Bible as determined by the Council of Nicaea, which differs in turn from the Bible of the Orthodox and Coptic churches, and are quite different from the King James English translation (which is only 400 or so years old), or any of the modern English translations....
There are a half-dozen or more KNOWN ancient religions/cultures that definitely have versions of Biblical stories older than those found both the oldest Bibles and the Koran, and the Christian and Muslim written accounts we know of are relative newcomers to the scene, being thousands of years younger than most of them. But, what's the point in pointing it out? Does it really matter?

Give it a try - it can be fascinating, and not just for knowing more about Christianity; the Bible as a work of literature has been very influential to writers, artists, film-makers, and more, and not just in making religious art: you can find Biblical references and influences in science fiction and general literature, for example. As a fairly ancient work written by a variety of writers over a great deal of time, you can find a variety of different trains of philosophical thought and a lot of history in there, in addition to mythology and religion.
The language can be daunting, depending on the version you read. The King James version of the Bible, for example, is in a somewhat archaic style of English - it's fairly modern English, but sometimes the meaning of some idioms and expressions can be lost on some people. Other versions of the Bible use updated and modernized English, and/or contain footnotes that explain some of the more obscure words, phrases, or trains of thought.
There's also the matter of the Bible not being a single book, but rather a collection of different books written by different authors in different cultures over a vast amount of time - some of the books were originally written in Hebrew in the ancient middle east, some were written in Greek and Latin in Europe before and during the time of the Roman Empire. Some books focus more on creation stories and other mythological topics, some focus on history, some on genealogy, some are books of poetry and songs, some are apocalyptic warnings by commentators on government and churches of their time, some are explorations on philosophy of law while others reflect debate on philosophy of religion and moral and ethical subjects, some describe vivid dreams and visions and prophecies, some are letters between early churches and philosophers trying to work out how to govern a church and what a church should and should not do....
The Bible can be a mixed bag to read, ranging from a riveting war story, or bizarre science-fiction/fantasy-style story about supernatural beings and their interaction with people, or deep debate on philosophy or law or ethics and morality, or a gorgeous poem, to a seemingly pointless and relatively dry and dull recounting of a list of names of chiefs and kings of a foreign culture. This variety makes some books of the Bible easier to read and understand than others, and many casual readers will find some books that are interesting to read, and others that can largely be skipped.

Oh, but you can read a Bible. Just go to www.bibleserver.org - and you'll have a choice of lots of Bibles in many different languages. Tip: start with the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, John and I forgot the fourth one), these are the stories about Jesus.

I'm morally against it, but I don't think the government should be deciding people's morals; that's their own business. If a gay couple wants my opinion on the matter I'll freely give it, but it's their business, not mine, and definitely not the government's, what the choose to do with each other.
