This is fairly common practice in the UK. I always check for the bible when I stay in accommodation. I’m not religious but have no problem with it.

    • @seraphina985

I'm not religious myself nor do I have an issue with religion per se, that said I do have concerns with active propagation of harmful ideas. Sadly that makes the bible a rather disturbing work from my perspective, don't get me wrong here I'm also no proponent of censorship either but the bible is a work that advises slave ownership and offers helpful guidance how to beat ones human property. Can't help but find that actively engaging in the proliferation of such material without criticism is at best morally questionable, ideas should not be censored sure but harmful ideas ought not to proliferated without challenge either IMO. Also no I am in no way suggesting modern Christianity supports the biblical positions on slavery in general either but the book itself does remain a strong advocate for such practices even most Christians would rightly identify as immoral these days so still worrying to see it promoted absent context.

They did explain, at 1:30 . 90% of the United States were Christian at the time of Gideons founding, a large demographic for hotels were travelling salesmen. It was a bible for people who forgot to bring their own with them and it was a way as evangels to spread the gospel.

Whether the book be a Hebrew Bible, Quran, Book of Mormon or any other religious text, it should be up to the individual to seek out such things if indeed they are interested in learning about it. I don't like the idea of having a Bible in the room because it's making the assumption that everyone is Christian and many people like me are atheist or a different religion. A better idea would be to have a piece of paper saying that any religious book such as the Bible, Qur'an, etc can be requested from reception if required and the reception could just keep a stack of kindles with free open sourced copies of pdf scriptures, that way someone could request it and be lend a kindle for the duration of their stay containing all religious scriptures.

Its mainly in AMERICA, most of our population is christianity. Some countries have statues if other religions, not just us.

Thank you for a very fair, even-handed coverage. I am aware of stories of people considering suicide but deciding to get help after reading a Gideons Bible.

I'm happy to hear that but anybody considering suicide should look for help along fellow humans. Religion requires believing and that's hard for most people, which makes finding the way into religion a potential failure. Nobody, especially in a difficult situation should experience that.
I'm fine with talking to believers but I consider reading a book popentially harmful in this situation.

Mule Shit, those prevented suicides are only Christians throwing a drama tantrum at their own god because he was being mean! So they are going to be an awful Atheist for a while and then have a great story of their return to Christ, later.

Yep, that's how religion gets you. It waits till your in a shitty life situation and at your weakest, then brainwashed you when your to desperate to fight it.

Idk why people get offended by religion. Isn’t it a personal choice to believe?

Last 2 years I stayed in 5 different hotels and only 1 has had 2 bibles in one drawer. All the other ones I been to just dont have them new or old. The oldest one being a subsidiary of a chain hotel didn't have one. The newest hotels I been to including 1 that had been built within the last 2 years didn't have one. However the one I am in has a large bible and a smaller one.
Its kinda a bygone era of hotels just like cheap window mounted AC units, funny tasting ice, and smoking rooms. (yes they existed into the 90s) as well as those off yellow itchy sheets and rock hard beds.
I think most hotels now have a bed, travel soaps or MLM soap the owner bought/sells. Cheap ones been really renovating and improving on the west coast like going to LEDs over bulbs and using USB+120V outlets catering to the modern business people.

Every hotel I've ever stayed in, in my country, Honduras, and internationally, has had a Bible. As a Catholic myself, I actually enjoy the inclusion, and it's removal would bum me a little. I believe that the better approach would be the one of providing free, easy access to all religious texts. However, I am aware I am biased on this issue

The way Siple describes how some hotels don't have bibles is so thick with disdain, he can barely get the words out.

My favourite game to play in hotels is find the Bible, and usually scroll through it to try to find money in there, sometimes there is.

There is something a lot more valuable than money inside the covers of the Holy Bible. The truth. The truth that will set you free.

Almost every hotel that I have stayed in has had a Gideon's Bible. The only one that did not was in Las Vegas, which makes sense.
