@@cameronmyers2154 Diamonds are more useful than a cell phone. Because there are alternatives to cell phones. There is no alternative to diamonds. You forget the MASSIVE impact it has had on tooling. Everything you use, including your food and water, can be traced back to a diamond saw in some way or another. Without diamonds, many products we use would be far too expensive (or of a much lower quality) for most consumers. And that is just one commercial use for them. Diamonds are more than just pretty rocks.
Interesting diamond story: Kimberlite, a type of rock usually sitting on top of diamond deposits, was found in northern Canada. De Beers rushed agents to Canada to secure the rights to the land where the Kimberlite was found. However, a Canadian company purchased the rights to land situated to the north of the find. This is because glaciation, something that doesn't happen in South Africa, would have pushed the Kimberlite to the south of its original location. De Beers, digging straight down, found no diamonds but the Canadian company did.
@・ ́ω・m they are, diamonds companies scan for the purity, if the diamond is too perfect and doesn't contain specific molecules, then they know it's a fake. But the machine to detect that is big and expensive. So in conclusion, the more pure the diamond is, the less it worth...
@Unmatched nut busting prowess yes exactly! No imperfections is what they are searching for to detect fake... But nobody will ask for your certificate of authenticity, so buy the fake!
and this is why almost all diamond jewelry that exists today are lab diamonds. Natural diamond is usually only found in the highest valued diamond jewelry
A trip with loved ones is a memorable moment and it doesn't have to be a diamond but it is like a token of love that like never dies since its made up of matter and it means u love them atleast 2 months of hardwork.....every1 deserves it be a man or woman... i mean that kinda love
I went with a lab made ruby. My husband and I compromised: I wanted something from Walmart or Amazon for cheap, he wanted something nice for me, and so we compromised by getting a nice lab made ruby ring. It pains me how expensive diamonds are because there are so many good scientific and industrial uses for them. Stupid greedy cartels.
Small diamonds in the rough for industrial applications are far cheaper though. Actually working the diamond into a regular shape adds to its value tremendously, and the price goes up exponentially with the size, ie a dozen very small diamonds cost far less than a single large one with the same total carat. Which is why diamonds are used in power tools and they're not that expensive.
@@BigUriel They are litterally only expensive because everyone bought into maybe the most successful ad campaign ever. Try to resell these things they are worthless.
My mother worked for a jeweler about twenty years ago, and to this day will still try to discredit man-made stones as somehow being fake or deceptive. In trying to convince customers that the more expensive natural diamonds were somehow preferable, she convinced herself too. I'm surprised more commenters aren't mentioning moissanite as an alternative to traditional diamonds. It's a pretty fascinating stone, with a cool history -- not to mention it's superior to a diamond in almost every way, for a fraction of the cost. For anyone looking for an engagement ring or other sparkly gift, look for moissanite jewelry. It's been around for quite a while, but most jewelers like Jared's or Kay don't carry it, because it competes with the much more profitable diamond. Etsy sellers and independent jewelers are a much better bet for quality moissanite jewelry. Plus, it's always nice to buy something from an independent craftsman than a massive corporation.
As I understand it the purpose of a real diamond vs fake is real diamonds are all unique due to the natural impurities. Thus you give a real diamond to someone you love because it is unique in the world just as they are. If I could not afford a real diamond I would simply give a ring with a different real stone but never a manufactured stone or cubic zirconia.
There was a tweet about how millennials are causing the diamond industry to have low sales. This in relation to 'mined diamonds'. I'm glad that videos like this have made people savvy to the games that diamond sellers, such as DeBeers, play.
@@Namron9797 Wow, dude. Felt the need to come back to a thread left alone for 2 months with you being the last to comment? What do you do in your free time? Also, it's a matter of utility. I can put a $2000 dollar computer to work and see the full value in it. What can a diamond ring be used for aside from jewelry?
The algorithm suggested this vid as as I follow all of Simon's channels. When I hit play on this video I was confronted by this bare faced man! What a shock. Oh how time has marched on.
I would rather dig one up my self i think its bigger gesture of how much i want to spend to find what it is you are looking for. Any dude can buy one,(well not really any more with how dead our economy is) but to go to the Earth and find one with your own hands, it think it would make it all the more special.
Diamonds are not a scam. No one is making you buy them. And there are not prettier rocks (of the same RI) that are safe for daily wear. You like that computer you're using? I can guarantee that some part of the manufacturing of it used a diamond saw blade. Keep talking about stuff you don't know about while simultaneously using the benefits of it.
This might be difficult to believe for some people but when I offered my wife to buy her a diamond ring she answered with what is said in this video. One more proof, if you check the stock markets you'll see Gold, Silver, Platinum, and other minerals but no Diamonds.
***** We're lucky! I have a lot of colleagues who had to borrow money and pay installments for a diamond ring. I'm not judging them or anyone for that matter, people can express their feelings in any way they want to. I'm just happy that I didn't have to spend 2 months worth of salary on a piece of jewelry. Instead we travel, eat out, and have fun.
Bear in mind that many of the 7 odd billion people on Earth are children or old people, so the odds are slightly lower, but still high enough for you both to be counted as lucky.
When you go to youtube for information about wedding etiquette and the value of your relationship and future....you know you're in shitty relationship.
Thirty-one years ago, my then wife won a diamond ring at a department store jewelers. The ring retailed for $500. Maybe a year later, we had it appraised. The new jeweler said it was worthless, but he'd buy the band itself for $10 (and remove the diamonds and give them to us.) This started a conversation where he explained in detail why the diamonds in the ring were worthless and used a microscope as part of his "lecture." It was interesting.
I have always hated the idea of wearing a big diamond ring. Just for all of the ethical and practical reasons available. My now husband was more than happy to comply. When we got married, I got a beautiful ring with an aquamarine center surrounded by white sapphires. It is simple, attractive, and it cost us next to nothing. I just wish more couples were comfortable taking the more practical approach to engagement. Seriously, save the money because nobody is going to notice or care what your ring looks like.
My husband bought me a ring of channel set emeralds. Practical in that I can wear it and not get stabbed by it and beautiful, and also didn't cost much.
there are alot of other stones beside Diamond like Sapphire,Ruby and so on. I hated diamond because they where so small you cant see them properly and too expensive for that size. These days why can buy CubicZirconia or Moissianite.
Not true. White sapphires don't refract light even a fraction of what diamond does. It looks like garbage (sorry to dis your ring). Also, aquamarines are not great for daily wear. A diamond can look the same for another million years. Your stone won't last 20 years and still look the same as when you bought it. You are correct that no one else cares what your ring looks like. Unless you work in certain fields or with high salary clients.
haha sell your diamons elsewhere, you choose the wrong place here xD we all know Moissianite is the better Diamond and Zirconia(CZ) is also an option, they are 100x/1000x cheaper and the fire is even better. If you have money to burn you have too much, there are always better things to invest in. Its totally unreasonable to bring up 1 million years since a human can only wear a diamond max 100 years. Maybe 200 if the daughter is willing to wear Grandmas ring (usually not xD) (sorry to dis your micro diamonds)
wishbone346 that's not why. There are other reasons. You are just hiding behind this excuse. If I had to guess I would think you are cheap. Or perhaps you don't feel like any woman is worth getting it for. Although a diamond does not show love itself, the fact that you would go out and spend the money on it because it means so much to her despite the fact that you think it's a rip off is what shows the love and that you are willing to go along with social norms even though you don't believe in them and are willing to fulfill her dreams is what shows the love. Maybe one day you will meet a woman so fabulous that you would make the sacrifice. I don't think its a sacrifice but I get the feeling you guys do.
Katie Kat Lol you know nothing about me, sweet heart, so don't go making assumptions. I'd buy someone I love a ring, just not a diamond that is worthless and represents everything wrong with capitalism. Rubies, sapphires, emeralds, or even just pure gold are all far more valuable, and I'd have no problem buying them. What's more if a woman is dumb enough to "dream" of getting a diamond and refuses to change her mind even after seeing how worthless they are then she can hit the bricks. I've got no interest in someone that superficial. Hell, if she measures love based on any gift I give her she's not worth my time. I'll give someone a gift because I love them, not because they expect it based on social "norms." "I don't think its a sacrifice but I get the feeling you guys do." How do you know I or anyone else here feels that way? You're making sexist assumptions and lumping all men together as if we're all just dimwitted neanderthals.
@Josip I disagree with you and CH1CK3NxSALAD.......I personally don't like diamonds. That said, as some posters here have said, if you love someone you should be willing to buy them anything to get them and THAT is the sentiment the woman is wanting from you. The WILLINGNESS to ignore logic and do something to make her happy. So for that YES you could lose a good mate over not "proving" how much you love them. But me personally I think women forcing men to waste money to show love is ridiculous. And Josip, you often need to give a female a ring to show her and society you aren't just F-ing around but really want to spend your life with her (you can thank the immature men out there that "don't know what they want" for forcing a ring as the deciding factor).
I thought it was hilarious some years back when they tried to start marketing low cost common brownish coloured diamonds as “Champaign Diamonds” and implying they were something exotic and scarce...😂
Diamonds can be produced in a laboratory with complete perfection and indistinguishable from natural diamonds for relatively low cost. There is absolutely no benefit of natural diamonds over fabricated diamonds other than social perception. After all, all a diamond is, is just a bunch of carbon atoms in a tetrahedral structure.
Yup. You are right.Personally, I like the way diamonds match everything and sparkle! I have only bought CZ and no one knows difference. My friends and ex-hubby gave me resl ones. The sparkle is more, but I do not like 'blood diamonds'. Debeers makes me want to vomit!
@@Namron9797 the only thing wrong about what he said was that diamonds are octahedral, not tetrahedral. Idk tho tetrahedral might be the molecular structure
Well, they cost a lot to buy "new" (obviously they are bloody old) but cost and intrinsic value are two very different things (just look at Number Plates on cars). Diamonds do have a value, they can be used in industry, for example, and they are nice to look at, but not £30 million worth of nice, as in the case of a blue diamond.
Value has two components: What it's worth to the buyer, and what it's worth to the seller. If you, as the buyer, believe a specific diamond to be worth a certain amount, you're partially correct. The seller also has to agree to that number. The moment you decide that any given thing is worth less than the asking price, than - in your case -that thing is without value to you. If enough people feel that way, the demand for that thing will drop. When demand drops, so does the market value. Since demand for diamonds is steady, they have a much higher value than you may specifically be willing to pay. As such, they're worth a LOT to those that own the market as well as to consumers willing to buy them. To you, they're worth shit. And yes, if you try to resell a diamond, you'll find that there's a big difference between the value of a "new" diamond from a diamond retailer and a "used" diamond from an individual reseller. Why? Because DeBeers convinced the market that only "new" diamonds have value. They did this by connecting a diamond purchase with perceived "love". Personally, to you and I and many others here, a diamond is worth less than shit. To the market, it's worth far more. This is what happens when a monopoly is able to control the supply of what would otherwise be a commodity.
What a joke. We are so gullible, tricked into believing that a compressed chunk of carbon, one of the most abundant minerals on earth, is the most precious thing we could give someone else.
To me, investing time and effort is a way to demonstrate true love, not throwing away tons of money. I spent months learning silversmithing and gem cutting so I could make my engagement ring myself, from a stone that was significant to both of us.
I never wanted a diamond for many reasons. When my hubs proposed to me he gave me a very cute man made emerald ring. The reaction from quite a few women was shocking, like I had been cheated out of a big diamond I never wanted. Reactions are pretty different since I switched to the huge Russian alexandrite ring I inherited from my Mom. I did wind up with man made diamonds on my wedding bands because it was hard to find a band that worked around a large stone. I love the continuity of wearing the ring my Mom wore everyday and that it's unique.
No it was not. And if you were a "certified diamondtologist" you would know that. This video was full of half truths, misconceptions, and only delved into the truth he could use to force his opinion on diamonds onto people and call them facts. He should be a politician, not a youtuber.
Diamontology is a branch of gemology that deals specifically with diamonds, typically for the purpose of increasing a diamond buyer's confidence. Certified diamontologists usually work in the jewelry industry as diamontologyis a skill set rather than a specific occupation.
I think if you'd touched on blood diamonds and what role the diamond trade currently plays in the ongoing warfare in Africa this video would have been complete. Still, as it is, this video is very useful to show any woman expecting a diamond from her mate. Better to show her this than to only say, "You've been conditioned through decades of clever marketing to think this chunk of rock is valuable."
De Beers had been banned from directly distributing and selling diamonds in the U.S. since 1948. In May, 2012 the company paid $295 million to settled longtime antitrust lawsuits with the U.S.
If that's all they had to pay considering how long they been hustling..... IMAGINE how much they *Really* made fooled all them men into going broke for some bling bling
The day I willingly give money for a diamond is the day I set fire to my wallet while still in my pocket. Fucking nonsense, if I wanted to be rid of exorbitant amounts of money for something of no value I'd just wipe my ass with it. Actually, I take that back, at least toilet paper has value.
Adrian Abedon Because as long as we keep making stupid people famous, there will be less and less people wanting to be educated and informed. This trend will also continue as more intelligent people are careful with birth control and only have the children they plan to, where stupid people constantly have "mistakes" , refuse abortions because of their faith (fine for them honestly but not their right to push on others) and have more kids on average the lower their intelligence. You should watch the documentary (I mean movie) "Idiocracy" for an example of where this will eventually lead society
You wanna know how valuable (er worthless) a diamond is? Try selling it back to the seller, if you lost your receipts, records of authentication and proofs ... you're diamond is worth nothing. Try it, go there and pretend you don't have any records, AND IF YOU THINK are lucky because you have authenticated papers, they will only pay 20% of the purchase price. I learned it the hard way in 2007.
Because of the myth that they are rare and valuable gem stones. The tradition of marriage and diamond rings is falling though and will die off in a few generations.
I wonder while if Earnest Oppenheimer knew that his own Anglo-American corporation was doing well, did he know that no one would be able to defeat De Beers at this time?
Not even a mention to the native workers who were basically slaves in their own country for the profit of a foreign power. Britain huh? I wonder if they did anything like this in other parts of the world?

I'm with you - don't want to support the diamond industry. Have you considered gem cut quartz? I have a beautifully cut rose quartz and wouldn't have anything different. There are companies that specialise in making engagement rings with gorgeous cut stones - that no one died for or whose country was robbed to obtain.
Quratz is tough but its hardness makes it a bit on the soft side for rings, it mostly stays as pendants broaches or necklaces. Now Topaz or Spodumene that's a sparkly gem that has a higher hardness then quartz.
Baconpancakes Unfortunately you are in the minority. I'd rather spend $ on something that's actually worth something. I have absolutely no problem with that.
According to Neal Degrasse Tyson, the technology to synthetically create diamonds in minutes exists now. They even have better clarity than the natural ones. I wonder if they are available on the market and if they cost less.
OF course, synthetic diamonds ( as well as other gemstones) have been around for awhile now, they're better quality and they have to add a florescent chemical to them so they glow in UV light to distinguish them from the real thing. Diamonds are made in volcanoes and there are volcanoes all over.....even on other planets, so they are quite common.
There is no fluorescent chemical added to synthetic diamonds, nor is it true that natural diamonds have no fluorescence (about 20% do), or that they are "made in volcanoes". It is however true that at the current state of things, one of the safest ways of telling synthetic from natural diamond is through UV spectroscopy.
When my Mum died in 2014 we had her 1ct. Canadian mined diamond ring appraised for estate purposes. My dad paid over $10,000 for that ring when he bought it. It's kinda a romantic story, when they were young he could only afford a cheap diamond ring. He wanted to surprise Mum with a big diamond for their 30th anniversary. Every month he secretly went to the jewellery store and made a payment. It took him two years to pay for it. He missed the 30th anniversary but gave it to her on Christmas day (her birthday) She loved it. A few years after she developed cancer. Any way, we were shocked to find out it only had a resale value of $2000 AT BEST! Most of that value was in the platinum setting. We never intended on selling it. We never told my Dad about the appraisal either. He now wears that ring on a chain around his neck as a symbol of his love for our Mum. In that sense it's priceless!
This video makes me both happy and pissed off. I love these random nuggets of info! De Beers is one of the greatest single cartels in modern times. (Another is Luxotica.) I personally would want to buy my love something truly unique/precious, but diamonds have been engrained in the minds of most woman. I think Rubies, Emeralds, or even Garnets are more beautiful IMO.
Just to clarify: At 2:40 in the phrase "In 1866 a young boer, a South African term referring to a farmer of Dutch or German descent..." that word "boer" is an Afrikaans word that is pronounced 'b-oo-r' with a hard 'r' sound, not 'bow-uh' as in the video. I'm a South African. I actually grew up in Kimberley close to the Big Hole.
IE The value of the diamond has less to do with the stone itself and the work used to cut and polish it. You pay mostly for craftsmanship and like art not everybody appreciates it.
Yeah my engagement ring was an amethyst and I'm perfectly happy about it (I did however get a black diamond for a wedding gift (from a friend) that I had made into a necklace)
Ah the diamond trade... keeping slavery alive and well into the 21st century, and yet people actually want them for some strange reason. Also there's de Beers being a cartel, which is what turned me off to them as a kid, finding out about the children enslaved to mine them or fight wars over them just cemented it for me.
The diamond cartel releases a small amount of diamonds each year to keep the prices up. But as soon as you buy a diamond, its resale value drops by about 90%. They're useless.
all of this, plus all the human rights concerns re: diamond production (even "certified" ethical ones are really hard to verify), had me decided against diamonds years ago. I mean, I'm not too keen on the idea of my partner spending thousands on something for me without 1) talking to me about it first, and 2) me at least contributing to the expense - that kind of money should go to something for us, our relationship, and our future life, rather than a piece of jewellery... besides, I'll most likely be working in a hospital setting and I haven't ruled out surgery or emergency med yet, so that ring would spend most of the time on a chain around my neck or in a locker anyway! I'd rather not carry around $100k that I can't even keep in one place for a full 24 hours - I'm stressing out just thinking about it 😅😅😅 besides, it seems to me that a gold band w/o stones would be a much better investment, depending on where you buy it (gold is very expensive in Sweden, but in Kurdistan (most of Middle East I think & probably at least India too) you pay for the gold (items are literally weighed and sold according to current international gold prices) plus a fee for the goldsmith's work which varies depending on the complexity of the piece... and if you buy second hand stuff, you don't pay for the designer's work, just for the gold (and ofc a very small additional fee so the store makes a profit)...
100 grand? How big of a ring do you want? Anyway, look on ebay for "Loose stones" and "settings". You can buy whatever types of stone you want, and the settings (rings) are many and varied. All you have to do is put the stones in the setting yourself and you can have a $100K ring for $20K or less... (Although, for THAT much... you might want to buy the special $15 "setting" pliers. ;P )
KOakaKO Lmao, I did the genius thing and typoed an extra zero, because conversions XD Two months worth of salary should equal around $10 000 - around 100 000 Swedish kronor - and since I think is SEK I just kind of skipped over the fact that I was WRITING in USD and, well, oops :P That said, I don't want a $10k ring either!! *shudders* I'd prefer just a plain gold band tbh, maybe with some kind of pretty metalwork details... But yeah, no, that was a typo ^^
@KOakaKO my i recommend Arizona's 4 peaks amethyst its some of the most colorful and personality filled amethysts out there. Plus its made in the US of A baby. From the mining, to the digging the shipping and even the cutting all done in Arizona.
When I got engaged, I told my fiance I did not want a diamond but a colored stone instead because I think they're prettier. He didn't like that idea because he thought people wouldn't think I was married without a diamond ring on my finger. Decades later, as a divorced woman, when my boyfriend popped the question, I told him I wanted a colored ring because I didn't want that whole "blood diamond" thing on my conscience. He accused me of not wanting anyone to know I was married. Obvs, there were some other issues there; but my point is that women aren't the only ones convinced diamonds are a must-have. I just think that's interesting.
Not in South Africa. The plural of "Boer" (your pronunciation is correct, however) is "Boers" in English or "Boere" in Afrikaans (pronounced "boor-a" ). Booren would be, as you say, the Dutch pronunciation but that doesn't really apply to this video. While I'm at it, Cullinan is pronounced as it is spelt, "Cul-li-nan", not "Cooleenian" as Simon pronounced it at 06:47
One day, after our Sun has expanded into a red giant, run out of fuel and blown off its outer layers, what will be left could very well be a diamond the size of the Earth. Other stars out there almost certainly have already done this, however, it would be awkward having a diamond quite that big, and who would you get to cut and polish it?
Not true, diamonds are carbon. Carbon is a relative light element that will fuse into heavier elements like oxygen and silicate all the way to iron before the star goes supernova
Lau I didn't work this out, I'm going by what I've read. The Sun is not a massive star, as stars go, it's sort of medium mass, so most of it won't fuse into heavier elements on a large scale at the end, neither will it go supernova.
Lau How many diamonds are 100% carbon? Of course it will have many impurities. Using spectroscopes, one can find various kinds of chemicals in the Sun, Hopefully it will have impurities that turn it slightly blue, or maybe a bit pink, or maybe a variety of hues?

It pains me how expensive diamonds are because there are so many good scientific and industrial uses for them. Stupid greedy cartels.
No clever cartels that convince stupid people that have to much money.

Plus, it's always nice to buy something from an independent craftsman than a massive corporation.
th-cam.com/video/22U_IVl_xhA/w-d-xo.html listen to your mother.

ThatGeekMom and
My husband bought me a ring of channel set emeralds.
Unless you work in certain fields or with high salary clients.
haha sell your diamons elsewhere, you choose the wrong place here xD
we all know Moissianite is the better Diamond and Zirconia(CZ) is also an option, they are 100x/1000x cheaper and the fire is even better.
I refuse to ever buy a diamond for anyone for these very reasons.
same.
wishbone346 that's not why.
I'll give someone a gift because I love them, not because they expect it based on social "norms."
"I don't think its a sacrifice but I get the feeling you guys do." How do you know I or anyone else here feels that way? You're making sexist assumptions and lumping all men together as if we're all just dimwitted neanderthals.

if you lose a lover over a diamond ring, your feelings for eachother weren't real.

Every concept of what you just said is a lie. What school did you study diamonds from?

sooooo.....diamonds aren't worth shit.
Well they are, they just shouldn't be.
You're right, diamonds aren't worth shit. Shit actually has value as fertilizer.
Just buy moissanite.

According to Neal Degrasse Tyson, the technology to synthetically create diamonds in minutes exists now. They even have better clarity than the natural ones. I wonder if they are available on the market and if they cost less.
Also yes, synthetic diamonds are cheaper.

IE The value of the diamond has less to do with the stone itself and the work used to cut and polish it. You pay mostly for craftsmanship and like art not everybody appreciates it.
7:30 he repeats the same sentence twice😂
Do your ears echo bro?
No

The women who coined "Diamonds are forever," Mary Frances Gerety never married.
What did she have to say about cats? Lots and lots of cats.
Gets diamond made from nans ashes proposes to girlfriend “is that your nans ring that’s so romantic” “no babe that actually is my nan” 😂😂😂😂😂
Seeing this old video of you actually made me chuckle 😂
"Hey baby, I like your carbon."
Great video! This was very informative and well-done. I spotted a rare and tiny "oops" between 7:16 and 7:32, though, a repeated line.
+Abbey Rhode. A glitch in the Matrix... ;-)
+Today I Found Out Lol. :)
Today I Found Out you totally butchered the woord boer you pronounce it like boo-r btw I am ab afrikaans south african
*an*
woord?
Thank you for taking my mind off of my day, and teaching me stuff. :)
Yeah my engagement ring was an amethyst and I'm perfectly happy about it (I did however get a black diamond for a wedding gift (from a friend) that I had made into a necklace)
Very nicely summarized. Thank yoU!
Ah the diamond trade... keeping slavery alive and well into the 21st century, and yet people actually want them for some strange reason. Also there's de Beers being a cartel, which is what turned me off to them as a kid, finding out about the children enslaved to mine them or fight wars over them just cemented it for me.
Right...almost makes you wonder if its cursed stone because of the child slavery & what not...hence the divorce rate ...
so diamonds are effectively worthless since there are so many of them out there
The diamond cartel releases a small amount of diamonds each year to keep the prices up.
I'd rather not carry around $100k that I can't even keep in one place for a full 24 hours - I'm stressing out just thinking about it 😅😅😅
besides, it seems to me that a gold band w/o stones would be a much better investment, depending on where you buy it (gold is very expensive in Sweden, but in Kurdistan (most of Middle East I think & probably at least India too) you pay for the gold (items are literally weighed and sold according to current international gold prices) plus a fee for the goldsmith's work which varies depending on the complexity of the piece... and if you buy second hand stuff, you don't pay for the designer's work, just for the gold (and ofc a very small additional fee so the store makes a profit)...
FaerieDust very well said
100 grand? How big of a ring do you want?
Anyway, look on ebay for "Loose stones" and "settings". You can buy whatever types of stone you want, and the settings (rings) are many and varied. All you have to do is put the stones in the setting yourself and you can have a $100K ring for $20K or less...
(Although, for THAT much... you might want to buy the special $15 "setting" pliers. ;P )
KOakaKO Lmao, I did the genius thing and typoed an extra zero, because conversions XD Two months worth of salary should equal around $10 000 - around 100 000 Swedish kronor - and since I think is SEK I just kind of skipped over the fact that I was WRITING in USD and, well, oops :P
That said, I don't want a $10k ring either!! *shudders* I'd prefer just a plain gold band tbh, maybe with some kind of pretty metalwork details... But yeah, no, that was a typo ^^
FaerieDust
- I like Amethyst. Wouldn't mind having a ring with one of those stones in it. ;)
@KOakaKO my i recommend Arizona's 4 peaks amethyst its some of the most colorful and personality filled amethysts out there. Plus its made in the US of A baby. From the mining, to the digging the shipping and even the cutting all done in Arizona.
And that's why people hoarder gold, platinum and silver. Better returns.
annette fournier People don't hoarder, they hoard. On the other hand, if you hoard then that would make you a hoarder.
Freyja Svansdóttir omg, sorry, I didn't want to write hoarder. I'm much to distracted. I need an editor.
ComocosonoEWL yup.
Hi Simon, really enjoying watching your videos. Great delivery and the subjects are fascinating. Keep up the great work :)
My fiancee actually asked me for a pink sapphire so that's what I gave her. Best $50 I ever spent.
Your pronunciation of the word Boer is incredibly amusing 😂
As a South African, his pronunciation of Boer confused me every time during the video
boer is Dutch for farmer and pronounced boor... booren is the plural...
Great video!
Not in South Africa. The plural of "Boer" (your pronunciation is correct, however) is "Boers" in English or "Boere" in Afrikaans (pronounced "boor-a" ). Booren would be, as you say, the Dutch pronunciation but that doesn't really apply to this video.
While I'm at it, Cullinan is pronounced as it is spelt, "Cul-li-nan", not "Cooleenian" as Simon pronounced it at 06:47
So funny to see young, innocent, beardless(mostly) Simon
Holy crap. Well this was a shock. My, how you have changed. Not baaaad... ...just different.
South African here, early in the years the discovered platinum, chrome and gold, naming a whole province, a whole Gauteng 👌🏽 city, Johannesburg
1' 20" Wow, I never knew that Alexander the Great met Sinbad.
Lau
I didn't work this out, I'm going by what I've read. The Sun is not a massive star, as stars go, it's sort of medium mass, so most of it won't fuse into heavier elements on a large scale at the end, neither will it go supernova.
Fair enough, but still it won't be a 100% cabron object that gets compressed into a massive diamond the size of earth
Lau
How many diamonds are 100% carbon?
Of course it will have many impurities. Using spectroscopes, one can find various kinds of chemicals in the Sun, Hopefully it will have impurities that turn it slightly blue, or maybe a bit pink, or maybe a variety of hues?
Ok you win the diamonds, should there be any. Yours for the taking in only7-8 billion years. Might still be a little hot to the touch
that's cool
using a sham like love to push another sham like diamonds
Love isn't a sham, it's chemical based
It's the same with Tahiti pearls, there are tons of them in safes held back to up the market price.
I learnt a lot, thanks Simon, I enjoyed this one. 💎
