Your description of wanting your Bible to be about "god's word" and not wanting American stuff in there (or another stuff!), was so spot on. It hits the core of the issue perfectly.
I haven't been to church since I was 10 and I'm 41 and drinking a 12 pack at 7am like every day and for some reason I had to click on this video. I don't know if its a sign or what but it's nice to see someone so positive and gives me hope. Thank you.
I’ve recently started attending church after not going for 20+ years. Find you a good church family. There’s thousands to choose from. Meet with the pastor. Several times.
If you are watching and commenting, you have maintained a level of dignity and character. My body can't handle alcohol; maybe yours is the same. Ask for help--- there's plenty out there. Don't get hung up on religious issues, it won't help you get sober. Do you WANT to get sober?
I agree too. I'm patriotic. Both my dad and my best friends dad served in the military. But I think we shouldn't make the Bible political. Very good opinion on that Tim!
On Earth as it is in Heaven… an unchecked political system is very dangerous. We can have good politics that are Christ based. Others will benefit from it as well even if they don’t want to admit it.
I am so proud to be an American, it hurts.... but I think it's borderline blasphemous to put the U.S. Constitution into the Bible. How is that not adding to scripture?
It’s a clearly separate set of documents in the back of the Bible added for convenience. It doesn’t purport to be the Word of God, so no, it’s not blasphemous at all. 😊
@@gloriaanngomez3238 To be fair, I said "borderline," and I suppose if it's very clear that it's in a separate "non-inspired" part at the end, kind of like the Apocrypha in some Bibles, it would alleviate most of my concerns. But although I'm not a liberal, we as conservatives have to reckon with the fact that many of the founding fathers (but not all and maybe not even the majority to be fair, but many nonetheless) didn't even believe in Jesus as the Christ (Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin come to mind, both admired Jesus, but they did not believe he was divine). I've actually read Ben Franklin's autobiography and yup, any fair reading indicates that at least at the time it was written, Ben Franklin was not a Christian, at least not in any traditional sense of the definition. The U.S. Constitution was an amazing achievement, but the Bible's light will burn brighter and inspire more people far longer than the Constitution will ever be remembered, and it does seem not right to me to put it together with the Bible, but that's just my opinion.
@@gloriaanngomez3238per 3 different religious denominations where I reside felt it is Blasphemy to have added the constitution etc to the Bible, they referred to Revelation 22:18 🙏
Since everyone else have already said all that’s needed to be said, I will just say thank you for your honesty on reviewing and admitting that there are actually bibles that you don’t like as much as others. Always a pleasure to watch your reviews, Tim! You’re still awesome!
Great video, I personally love the Thompson Chain. yes, the older ones were very "busy" but the new ones are much improved. I think what I like about the Thompson the most is that if you want to just read the Bible, it is there with no intrusions from super-scrips, sub-scripts, letters, numbers, or symbols, and no fear of the text falling into the gutter. if you find a passage interesting, you can look to the margin and and get references or parallel passages, or even follow the whole chain. the strength of the Thompson is that instead of an authors commentary (which may or may not align with your views), it really only uses scripture as commentary on scripture. Some of this may be nostalgia from when I was young and saw the maps in the back that showed the travels of different people laid out in an easy to understand form.
I have looked at the Thompson Chain Bible and have no idea how one uses it. It always seemed crowded with words and wasn't appealing. I need to have someone explain how to use it.
@@flowerlass READ the pages at the beginning or use TH-cam to figure it out. All Bibles explain in the beginning pages how to use it, TH-cam also has videos that explain it.
Oh I loved those maps too! I was into maps as a kid, all kinds of maps. (Yeah, I liked the Hobbit maps too!) It made it easier for me to feel engaged in the stories. It gave the stories a sense of progress, I think, like they were going somewhere. Yeah, nostalgia!
Oh, me, too! I Iove thumb-indexed Bibles, but they are difficult to find sometimes. I don't like Bible tabs that you have to add yourself.@@guymontag349
100% agree. I didn't think I was going to be in the thumb indexing until I used a Bible with one and now... I have to say I prefer it. And one of the biggest reasons I don't own a Schuyler or more than one Cambridge (I own a Cambridge cameo but no others) is because there are none with thumb indexing. When a new Bible comes out, the first thing I do is see if there is an edition with indexes. It makes navigating the Bible just so much quicker.
I have a wonderful Cambridge Concord (KJV) in black calf split leather which is thumb indexed.@@caomhan84 I also have a great NKJV verse-by-verse in Comfort Print from Thomas Nelson which is thumb indexed.
,, Well, if you read your Bible on a regular basis, you can just open it to what you want and be very close to what you want to read. It takes time and study.
Me too! Instantly helps me be happy and excited to open the Bible. For someone who has struggled to crack open the good book for decades, I consider this a plus! In the last 6 months, I've read more of the Bible than I have my whole life!
Just watched your video on ‘Bibles I Don’t Like’. Nicely done. Everyone has their personal preferences and it’s really good to finally see someone stand up and say what they like or dislike.
Wow! Thanks! I learned something new. I never knew what the 5 raised areas on the spine of the Bible was. Never gave it any thought. Thank you for mentioning the 5 Solas. It will allow me to make an informed decision on any future Bible purchase.
This discussion highlights how very fortunate we English speakers are to have such a multitude of choices! I don’t know of any other language in which the Bible is available in such a variety of translations, formats, editions, different study helps etc etc. So very blessed!
Yes! My grandma’s first language is Spanish, so I was trying to find her a Spanish Bible. I’m having such a hard time with it. There are Spanish Bibles out there, but not many high quality ones from what I’ve found. Though I will say that the most beautiful Bible I’ve ever seen in my life was a Portuguese Bible, and I wish I could read Portuguese just so I could justify buying it. But I don’t think it’s worth it to buy a Bible I can’t even read, as beautiful as it is.
@@Maria-jq3zvLook for the 1602 Valera Purified. It’s available online to buy. God Bless!!! They even have leather Bibles and bilingual Bibles on the main site. I would post the site but YT cracks down on links.
I dislike how many "translations" there are. How many changes and corruptions. Some of them say different things. The Word of God says the people who changed them are cursed. So I probably wouldn't be proud in any way. There seems to be no positive side to this reality.
I find it funny that many disagree with you. And then bring out "corruption" as if they can read Koine Greek and Ancient Hebrew to point out which of which is corrupted.
@@westleybenson1188 That’s the $65,000 question. I use primarily NASB 2020, NKJV, ESV, and NIV depending on my “mission.” I remain aware, as much as I can, as to the potential biases. Dr Mark Ward, has a YT channel that I have found helpful as he has exhaustively studied most versions and offers some guidance you might find helpful. There are others as well. Full disclosure, I’m not a Calvinist and am personally sensitive to those folks who lean heavily in that direction without regard for anyone who doesn’t share their views. Doesn’t mean Calvinists aren’t brethren, just having an opposing view. YOU are responsible for study to assure what you’re being taught aligns with Scripture. Not an easy task but if you’re new to the faith find a trustworthy believer who can help you. Blessings brother/sister!
I had a patriotic Bible on my bookshelf for around ten years without reading it. After President Trump got shot (July 2024) and there was such a call for praying for his safety, I picked it up and read it from cover to cover. At first I found it distracting, but I quickly focused on the word and only read the patriotic stuff after I finished my reading of the Bible's text. It was a wonderful experience during this election period. The historical reference's to our Lord and the Bible throughout American history was mind blowing and I am so glad to have read it. (I will keep it as a reference!)
Active in military for 11 years now and I couldn’t agree more with you on your point of not putting anything about the USA in a Bible. Great video, I’ve been watching so much of your content lately and I absolutely love and appreciate your videos!
Thank you Tim for your honesty!!! I’m glad you finally did a review like this one. It makes me trust your reviews more. That question was always lingering in the back of my mind as I watched your reviews. Your reviews have always been so positive for the most part. I knew there had to be Bibles that you didn’t like but you never really said anything about it. That made me question your reviews just a little🤔🤔🤔. Thank you for making and sharing this review✝️🙏🏽✝️🙏🏽✝️. You were very professional and genuine to the makers of these Bibles.
This is the first evening I have watched your reviews. I really like it. I understand. I am very old fashioned about my Bible (although I own several versions). King James is my favorite, but I have a Common Bible with the apocrypha, which I find interesting. I did enjoy this video. Thanks.
It's kind of sad how many times Tim had to ask people to be kind in the comments section. Such a kind, humble person who's just trying to help people find a Bible that's a good fit for them. I think watching his videos helps me to learn how to appreciate the good in something even if it isn't up my alley. Thanks for your videos, Tim. You rock!
Speak the wisdom of true godliness, not hot topic divisive baby shit. It's not your Bible. It's not to fit you. Rather, the Holy Spirit it the one who morphs.
I myself have a purple Bible, only because I like that color. I think women tend to go for a specific color. If I’m going to put a cover on it, then I don’t care about color.
@@kertekroth8568True. But it’s ok to have a more personalized experience when buying a Bible you plan on using every day. If that weren’t the case, then I wouldn’t buy a physical Bible anymore since I can download it onto my phone.
Of those you listed, the patriotic Bibles turn me off the most. A lot of our patriotism treads too close to idolatry for my tastes, and patriotic Bibles always send me running. However, I like the look of the Treveris for the very reasons you don't. I hope one day they put up a KJV with Apocrypha (tall order, I know).
No need to stress Tim. I'm just happy we are so blessed with so many bible options. I just got a Treveris recently. I'm still up in the air on it. I think I may prefer the double column. But I'll give it a little more time.
How blessed are we that we have so many "choices" when it comes to Bibles in this country. Our missionary conference this year had testimony shared on places that do not yet have a Bible in their language. We debate colors of the covers. We also heard of a woman who was put out of her home to read her Bible. She could come in, but not her Bible. Praise God for His Word and to Him be all Glory.
This was good and your reasons are valid. I agree with all you said but being a woman and an artist, I was super excited to see some colorful Bibles. I remember how much they drew me to them and of course, it is was is inside that is really so great. I love that we have so many choices. After some years, I have come back to loving the more traditional Bible colors and covers. I feel that Hosanna Revival really have made some very beautiful Bible in the embossed browns and other calming colors. Just my thoughts. I loved this video. Thank you for ding it. You have great reasons. I really enjoy watching your videos and LOVE how you wife sees all the pretty things about a Bible too! Bless you, Tim!
I have gained so much from the Chain-Reference Bible. The objection to it that it feels like too much to learn about on each page, I really do not understand that at all.
Great job Tim. I like how you tread lightly on these subjects. I’ve seen way too much bashing of bibles or translations. We should fear that the Lord is using said bibles in someone’s life and for us to squash that should be a fearsome thing.
Love your videos my friend. Just ordered the ESV Stridon Desert Camel Calfskin, and Quentel Black Goatskin NIV. ZERO point calvinist out here in NorCal. Blessings.
When I was first saved, I was given a Scofield Bible. After a few years, I set it aside---I did not like when the notes appeared in the middle of verses, and even broke up the middle of a train of thought in the Biblical text. It also probably didn't help when I left dispensationalism by the wayside after studying some in Hebrew and Greek. Nowadays I don't care for any Bible that intrudes upon the text of Scripture, placing notes within the Biblical text. I don't mind little numbers or letters in the text, as long as the comments are moved to the sides or center. I have seen too many people who classify (at least in their minds) the comments as equivalent to the text.
I believe the Scofield Bible in the notes are more like the Baptist beliefs as I used to be Baptist. Now I’m Church of God. It’s Pentecostal but believes in the trinity also as the Baptist did.
I have to admit that I was one of those who placed too much importance on the contents of the notes in the Schofield KJV. Once I realized that, I immediately purchased a KJV Bible with text only from Church Bible Publishers. Their Bibles can get expensive if you go for a luxury cover but otherwise are very good quality Bibles.
Hello Brother Tim. This was a great segment. Bibles are definitely personal and nobody likes the exact same bibles or else there would only be one format of bible sold. Blessings to you and your family 🙌👏
Huge fan of the Treveris, the layout is new and different, but did not take long to become integral to my study. I would consider it a perfect EDC bible and recommend it to anybody looking for a new bible. Cheers.
I never had a bright colored Bible but for some reason I felt drawn to the Humble lamb NKJV Shepard in Orange and I absolutely love it. It has become my everyday carry. I normally would agree with you on the bright colors but something about that orange. Great video and thank you for all the wonderful content
100% on every point (and I am confessionally Reformed). Thanks for the honesty. Your reviews are always helpful to me when looking at purchasing another bible.
Thank you for a POSITIVE look at these Bibles. I honestly did not realize that the five ridges on the spine stood for the five solas. My favorite leather Bible has them on it and I had thought it was just for aesthetics and to protect the type from wearing off. Not a big deal for me but it is nice to know. God bless!
Good afternoon. I've watched several of your videos and I found them refreshing. I've been searching for a new Bible and wanted some Pros and Cons from other people. As far as color, I lean towards a Black color. Yeah, I'm Old School. My first Bible was given to me by my parents. It had a Blue Binding. In 1970, I bought a Black Zondervon Bible. In about 1980 I bought a Brown Thompson Chain Bible. I recently bought a Black Thompson Chain Bible but, I've been looking at the R.L. Allan and the Schuyler Bibles as well. The Allan and Schuyler Bibles are very nice and, the price of them reflects how nice they are. I really appreciate your honesty on your appraisals of the different Bibles Pros and Cons. Aside from my preference for the color Black, I also lean towards the KJV. Thanks for sharing your input and honest thoughts on selecting a Bible for your daily Bible reading. Stan
I just found your channel (from the God Bless the USA Bible review)... To me, the importance of a video like this is that it gives people "permission" to think about what they DO and DO NOT like about whatever Bible they have been exposed to... As a teen, I found it very hard to try to read through the Bible - something my teachers and elders told me that I REALLY needed to do. I had an somewhat old KJV to read from and deciphering the language kept derailing me. I always thought that something was wrong with ME... I grew up during a time that younger followers didn't question what they were taught or told by teachers... An honest message like this with no JUDGEMENT, only opinions, would have saved me a lot of anguish and might have helped me find what I needed to grow. The message that it is OKAY to know what presentation works and doesn't work for me.
I agree with most everything you said. The Trevaris is what threw me off a bit. I had collected quite a few nice bibles from Allan in the past. ESV, NIV and KJV. I then purchased a full sized Canterbury KJV and was blown away at how nice it was. To be honest, my Allan bibles fell a bit short of it. I then bought a personal size Canterbury and it was every bit as nice as the full size. Well, I have been wanting to size up a little bit from my EDC Allan ESV (my eyes are getting old) and was leaning toward the Trevaris. I do like the drop caps in the Canterbury and really enjoy the single column for reading. Should I be looking to something else?
It’s funny you say that about the Thompson Reference chain! I recently got it and my wife opened it up for the first time and she was like “whoa!” And immediately said she didn’t like it. There was just too much on the pages!
I totally agree with you about the Schuyler Treveris, Tim! 😊 I really wanted to like the ESV Treveris. I honestly went back and forth, back and forth, for months. Especially because I love, absolutely love, Schuyler Bibles. They are my favorite premium Bible publisher. But in the end, just like you, I don't think I like the ESV Treveris. For example: * I don't like that there's a concordance. It would've been better to go with no concordance and increase the thickness of the paper (gsm) so that the Treveris is either a bit more opaque or so that each page in the Treveris is more breathable since the current page seems a bit crowded or dense to me. I like concordances and other helps or aids in study Bibles, not in reader's Bibles. * I don't like that the Oxford Hollow in the spine apparently causes a crease at certain angles. But I've heard this isn't really noticeable and also that over time it flattens out and becomes unnoticeable. Still, it's slightly annoying. * I don't like that the Jerusalem cross isn't centered after the full yapp becomes trained. It's not something easily noticeable but once you see it it's hard to unsee it - at least for me. * I don't like the misprint in Isaiah 12's red drop cap, which says "O" rather than "Y" as in "You". But this should be fixed in the next print run. So it wouldn't be a permanent issue. It's only a problem in the current ESV Treveris editions. * I don't like the red drop caps. I mean, I love that there is some color in the text, because a little bit of color is a nice touch and draws me in more than all black and white which leaves a more mundane impression on me. But I don't love the overly ornate red drop caps. The drop caps are way too gaudy or ostentatious. Too florid. Too big and too showy for my tastes. In this case, I wish the Treveris had just left it normal black text. There's already enough color on each page of the Treveris. The red drop caps virtually scream to me, but I tend to prefer quieter aesthetics. I'm also more of a minimalist. If the Treveris was a castle, it'd be more like the Palace of Versailles. However, I prefer a simpler and cleaner but elegant look like the Chateau de Chambord, the Chateau de Chenonceau, the Chateau de Fontainebleu, the Chateau d'Usse, etc. * I don't like that they placed the verse numbers off to the side. I get why they did it. It's a kind of hybrid between a reader's Bible and being able to reference a reader's Bible. So the Treveris would work for someone who wants this kind of a hybrid. Such as a Bible study leader or similar who wants a Bible to read along with everyone else as well as a Bible to quickly find verse numbers. But for me, I guess I'm more of a purist when it comes to reader's Bibles. I want to have an enjoyable reading experience first and foremost. The Treveris detracts too much from this for me. Again, just my opinion, but the Treveris seems to want the best of both worlds, but it ends up being less than the best of both worlds. Not saying it's the worst, because there are a lot worse Bibles, just that it's less than the best. But Schuyler normally has such a high standard that the Treveris being less than the best is a bit of a disappointment for me. Again, just speaking for myself. * Overall the Treveris seems to strive for an old world aesthetic, a vintage look and feel, something for the gentlemanly sophisticates of yesteryear, but I suppose I'm too new world and modern. I prefer the aesthetics of the Quentel or PSQ in general. Indeed my ideal Bible would be something like a reader's version of the Quentel or PSQ - single column, paragraph, remove the chapter and verse numbers, remove the headings and references, but leave in tact the font, font size, etc. I think that'd make for a wonderful reader's Bible. Or perhaps Schuyler could again partner with Crossway (as they did with the absolutely stunning Heirloom Heritage which I utterly love and prefer to the Treveris) and print a premium version of the ESV Reader's Bible (as RL Allan once did but now it's out of print). But if they do, I hope they will please remove the chapter numbers since, as Mark Ward has said, the ESV Reader's Bible with chapter numbers is like climbing Mt. Everest and making it to like a few feet short of the summit then calling it quits. So close yet so far!
I overall agree- I feel sentimental about the Thompson Chain because it was the Bible that was super popular when my parents got in church and everyone had one back then. I think the new one is better than the old one.
I love your positivity! Don't worry what others say. I turn to your channel daily to see what you have going on. Please, continue to be you. You're so fun to watch, and my favorite Bible reviewer. (Sorry Tim N., and Tim F., nothing personal. 😉) That being said, fancy colored bibles are for teen, young adults and old ladies, like me. I know it's not a man thing, but the publishers listened and are selling💲🛍 a lot of them because of color. It draws in new buyers. Next, I agree with your comments on the old Thompson Chain Reference. I have a KJV large print by Kirkbride,. I rarely look at it, unless I want to study a specific topic. I do have the new NASB GOAT on order to replace the older version. I bought it because of the redesign. Also, I bought the NASB over the NKJV because of the light tan🐐 goat cover. ( female preferences). I don't like the 5 Solas either, it makes the spine to busy. I love God's Word , but I don't know the differences in theology, as never went to seminary school. I just study and read what I love. Lastly, I have one patriots bible, only for the USA historical purposes. I read it one time, then put it away. Keep up the great work Tim, You (and your happiness) are a joy to watch.💁
This is my second video of yours that I've watched. The first was about the LSB, "is it hear to stay?". You just seem to be someone who really enjoys what you do. The delivery, the smile, the photography always keep me glued. It's enjoyable watching someone who's genuinely happy in what they do. As far as this video's subject matter, don't "sweat" it. You were as kind and non judgmental as you could be. Keep up the good work.
This was so well done. Opinions abound, and people can get really divisive. You are correct in that you have regularly mentioned in your videos how certain things in a particular Bible you are reviewing are not your thing. Like, for example, the use of red letters. You are gracious as usual. I love your channel. And, you have helped push me into a true Bible nerd! 😀Take care, best to you and your channel.
Love drop caps. Love single column across the page. Love the simplicity of no headers, verse numbers, footnotes in the text. Love the Treveris - you did it, you found the Bible for me! And also, love this video and all your reviews. Thanks for what you do. Have enjoyed your videos for years.
I laughed out LOUD! I have used my Thompson since 1970. We all have our opinions. What really matters is that I READ and study the word. Because of your honesty and positivity I am a new subscriber.
Good morning everyone, hope everybody has had a great week. Well let’s get down to business Tim. If you don’t like the Bible, then it must be really bad. I can’t wait to see which ones they are
It took a lot of courage for you to do this, Brother, and I respect you and appreciate it. Also, I happen to have similar thoughts on most of those Bibles. Grace to you!
Fun video! Thanks so much for sharing! And thank you very much for your positive approach to Bible reviewing. I’m sure I can speak on behalf of a lot of your supporters when I say that we are grateful to have at least one sphere of our lives that isn’t drowning in negativity and cynicism! Again, thanks so much for all the amazing work that you do!
I just found this video from a Facebook reel. Good video. I liked what you said about not printing the Reformed slogans on the spine. I agree. My background is Church of Christ. We like to leave theological systems out of the Bible and let it speak for itself. Which brings up my next point, I am one of those Thompson Chain fans. I've been using one for 30 years. Need to have it rebound . . . I wish someone would came out with more options the 1901 American Standard Version. New typeset, wide margins, etc. It's my favorite version for study.
Thanks for this. I've always thought that you never met a bible you didn't like - turns out that you have both positive and negative opinions..but are nice about it. People take note - we need more of this.
I totally agree with you about the Bible you mentioned with reference to the US. If I want to read and know more about the Constitution I will get a copy to read. For me the Bible is GOD'S Word and is not a book about the US. I appreciate Bible reviews as I have bought many different translations over the years. Currently the Bible version I am using for my everyday devotions and reading is "The Living Bible". I find I am understanding this translation better. I feel a bible is a personal matter and choice. GOD just wants us to read the Bible to draw closer to Him and get to know Him.
I think a Bible is a very personal decision for everyone. I enjoy watching when someone reviews a Bible, it allows me to hear the pros and cons. I have researched several Bibles after seeing a review on them, I think these reviews are more important now that there are fewer book stores where you can actually look at a particular Bible or translation. Color is just a preference, not a dislike of a Bible. I am very happy to have found your channel.
You handled that well! 😊 Dear Humble Lamb, please making Bibles in traditional colors, WITHOUT art work of any sort. Stay innovative, and stay in your lane, but consider those of us who are boring!!!
I appreciate what Humble Lamb is doing. Their Bibles are definitely different and I look forward to them publishing other versions like the NLT or NIV. Why would they want to be like everybody else?
Well, I appreciate that they have a lane. I personally don’t like the art work or their color choices. I want to support their passion… but just wouldn’t buy the color choices. If they offered just a tan leather I’d buy… and I can’t be the only one. If they never do, then I will bless them from afar. Be blessed!!
8:15 on your point about the drop caps, I didn’t know what you were talking about until you showed it to which I was like UES!! Me too!! Bc when I got my recent bible (in person) and saw that it had that, I was thrown off! Like they’re pretty, but I never studied the Bible with that so it rubbed me wrong. But when I think about the ways people memorize the Bible by using the first letter of every word in a verse, I’m thinking maybe that’s the usefulness of it? To help with memorization 🤷🏾♀️ it’s an idea right😄 Praise the Lord!
As a retired military man, I share your views about patriotic-themed bibles. A national flag has no place inside the sanctuary of a church or on the Holy Bible.
@@spiceweasel1145Yeah, they say "God and country", "God and country", and have an Ametican flag on one side of the "stage", and a fake "Christian flag" on the other, as if that's going to counterbalance the American flags place of reverence, and make it alright. And it does exactly that: it counterbalances them, making the American flag, and the ersatz "Christian" flag equal. "God and country"...
I agree with you on everything except the brightly colored Bibles. As an artist and musician I like the idea of rebinding or buying a new Bible that is in your favorite color. I guess it's an Identity thing you know it's your Bible in a pile of other's belongings at the end of church or church event when you bring your Bible with. Like a perse it can be a self expression. I feel like Bibles are personal when you own one you often put your name in the front maybe buy some personalized bookmarks for it why not have one in a color that pleases your eye. Yeah some are gaude looking but eh I'm not against a colored Bible. Humans come in different colors.
Yep! Love you more now. I'm right behind you regarding any nation/philosophy/current trend/etcetera being placed ABOVE God. It will always be God's prerogative to place favor as HE pleases. It is our responsibility to learn God's Word and to apply it in our lives...to serve and love God and to love our neighbor. By the way, I do love colorful Bibles but I, too, tend to own mostly black, brown, tan covered Bibles. 😅
It's funny: my family has always used Thompson Chain Reference Bibles, so for me the layout doesn't bother me. It's what I'm expecting. Neat to hear that someone else has a different opinion. I probably feel similarly to interlinear or parallel Bibles - multiple columns do make the text harder to follow. The Thompson Reference "wings" just seem so natural to me that I don't notice them 😂
What are you thoughts on Bibles which contain mistranslations? For example many, if not most, mistranslate you shall not murder as the more general you shall not kill? Or, Bibles which mistranslate the Decalogue admonition against images of things which are in heaven and on earth, etc. so as to allow these things like one of our oldest Christian communities has done? What is your favorite Bible translation? I kind of like the New English Translation with its translators notes to better know how the text eas translated from Hebrew or Greek, etc. to better understand the original meaning and so on.
Oh Tim you broke me! I just ordered the Schuyler Treveris ESV in imperial blue. But that's okay and I love your videos. I took it to heart when you said you should get a bible that speaks to you. When I saw the Treveris, it has all the features I was looking for in a bible. The bible I ordered will be a daily reader and I like the uncluttered look of the single column. I also love the look of the drop caps and the verse numbers in the gutter. This bible spoke to me and I'm sure it will be wonderful! You do an awesome job in your reviews and I’m so glad I found your channel. My next bible will be a Schuyler NIV PSQ hopefully in matching imperial blue. Take care and God Bless!
I only recently discovered your channel...very nice work...I just ordered a Schuyler Treveris... I will agree that it looks like it will be a different reading experience...so many bibles are so very similar in layout...this one looks to me like a no nonsense reading experience...reminds me of, perhaps how a first or second temple Jew might have read their scripture...just like a book...nothing to distract...time will tell...as I said I just ordered it and it arrives in 2 days...thanks for all your fun reviews...much love in Christ, Matt
I think you did a great job with this obviously tough topic for you. I think everyone has bibles the like less or more, as an atheist I don't have much skin in the game, but I do prefer the more modern translations as I feel they hew closer to the original meaning of the authors. Obviously, I don't believe it to be anything than an embellished somewhat historical text, but I recognize its historical and cultural impact. And I must say you are an excellent bible critic, even if you don't view yourself that way. You are doing great work helping Christians find their right bible. And that seems important to you, so keep doing it.
I really enjoyed watching this and listening to your points of view, Tim. It is perfectly good for us all to know what we love about our bibles, and what we buy! One thing I am doing is selling on eBay the ones I no longer read now that I have changed up my translations, however being sentimentally attached is making it hard!
I thought this would be about versions, but was about physical Bibles instead! I have honestly not heard about alot of these. I know that kids sometimes like the colorful Bibles.
Also, I was serving in a communist country once, and my team had a box of Patriotic American Bibles donated to us to give away. So cringe and inappropriate!
@Deanna65 I'm not embarrased by freedom. As for the flag, it's all about "for which it stands". These are important issues, and there is a nobility of heart with true protectors of our freedoms.. But that is not on the level of the word of God. To confuse the patriotic messages with the word of God, IS idolatry, making our favorite things into a god, and recommending them for other people to worship. That IS idolatry, and being "embarrased" by it, in the context of sharing the gospel so that people may be saved, is way beyond embarrassment, and way beyond "cringe". It is grievous, not just embarrassing. It is idolatry.
I really loved this video! You did a great job articulating features that you've found that make Bibles "that aren't right for you" -- often figuring out what we don't like about certain Bibles helps us narrow down and focus on the versions best for us. I'm unsurprised you're not a fan of brightly colored Bibles as I recall you mentioning that bright color not being one you'd personally want to bring to church. I love the look of brightly colored Bibles, but understand why many think they're garish or not somber enough for a daily Bible. Totally agree with you about the Thompson Chain-Reference Bibles! I've tried to use one before and found myself consistently overwhelmed or distracted. Glad they're around and so popular as many people seem to benefit greatly from them. It was a kindness to point out publicly that not everyone is looking to purchase a 5 Solas rebind and that rebinders are limiting their potential market when they make them without a particular purchaser in mind. You weren't unkind, didn't mention any companies by name in a negative manner, and if I were a small business owner this is feedback I'd be interested in. Love the Treveris! There's definitely been Bibles you've pointed out as some of your absolute favs that I wasn't enthused about -- we're so lucky there's such a wonderful diversity of Bibles to choose from in today's market! I completely agree with you about patriotic Bibles. I'd never been a fan of them as they seemed to be pandering, but you're right: it's really not cool to be mixing our allegiances to God and to our country in a copy of the Scriptures. Sorry, USA, but though I love you, you're coming in second place to God if there's a competition.
Thank you.
I hope your a better with that after a week. God bless you!
I’ve recently started attending church after not going for 20+ years. Find you a good church family. There’s thousands to choose from. Meet with the pastor. Several times.
Please open your bible.
If you are watching and commenting, you have maintained a level of dignity and character. My body can't handle alcohol; maybe yours is the same. Ask for help--- there's plenty out there. Don't get hung up on religious issues, it won't help you get sober. Do you WANT to get sober?
Your Hope should be in Jesus the Christ.
I almost fell out of bed when you said you don’t like the Thompson Chain Reference Bible. 😂
Nicely done Tim. I'm a vet and I have to totally agree on the "patriot" bibles. Our citizenship is in heaven.
Yep.
John 17:14-16
Our flesh lives in a hostile kingdom once we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
I agree too. I'm patriotic. Both my dad and my best friends dad served in the military. But I think we shouldn't make the Bible political. Very good opinion on that Tim!
@@stackthepackcollectibles6055 Our faith is not merely an individual affirmation, it is a communal thing, we ought to seek Christendom on earth!
On Earth as it is in Heaven… an unchecked political system is very dangerous. We can have good politics that are Christ based. Others will benefit from it as well even if they don’t want to admit it.
If your citizenship is in Heaven why did you fight for America
I am so proud to be an American, it hurts.... but I think it's borderline blasphemous to put the U.S. Constitution into the Bible. How is that not adding to scripture?
Ouch!! Forgot about that one.

The bright colors I think are for girls and women, because a lot of women want the softer tones. I do.
I like Bibles in black leather. They just seem more authoritative.
Since everyone else have already said all that’s needed to be said, I will just say thank you for your honesty on reviewing and admitting that there are actually bibles that you don’t like as much as others. Always a pleasure to watch your reviews, Tim! You’re still awesome!
Thanks!
Thompson chain is the best. Especially the old style.
I know I’m in the minority, but I wish more premium Bibles were offered with thumb indexing.
Move over, Gerry. I'm with you 100% on thumb indexed Bibles.
I like brightly colored Bibles! Makes me feel like the Bible is joyful and a Light! But, to each their own.
Bright and cheerful. Yep, especially when you read gruesome stories of god asking his chosen to slaughter men, women and children.
I like orange and green Bibles. I'm searching for a yellow Bible. I love bright colors!
Are you gay ?

I am 1000% with you on the patriotic bibles. Keep the main thing the main thing.
Exactly!! The more editions, formats and translations there are the more they sway away from the original texts.
I find it funny that many disagree with you. And then bring out "corruption" as if they can read Koine Greek and Ancient Hebrew to point out which of which is corrupted.
I don’t want a Bible “that’s right for me.” I want THE BIBLE translated ACCURATELY and WITHOUT BIAS.
Which one is that? How did you determine that?
@@westleybenson1188 That’s the $65,000 question. I use primarily NASB 2020, NKJV, ESV, and NIV depending on my “mission.” I remain aware, as much as I can, as to the potential biases.
Thanks, Sharon!
This is the first evening I have watched your reviews. I really like it. I understand. I am very old fashioned about my Bible (although I own several versions). King James is my favorite, but I have a Common Bible with the apocrypha, which I find interesting. I did enjoy this video. Thanks.
I LOVE your heart, Tim. Being critical isn’t a skill. Being an optimist is. And screw the haters, they aren’t worth your time!
Thanks, Jesse!
You rock!

True!
Yes, the Humble Lamb mustard color one that you showed here is beautiful! And I see one on your bookshelf that is the same color 🤗
Well said!
No need to stress Tim. I'm just happy we are so blessed with so many bible options. I just got a Treveris recently. I'm still up in the air on it. I think I may prefer the double column. But I'll give it a little more time.
I’m in full agreement, except perhaps on the TCR. I very much appreciate the very gracious and kind way you handled this topic. Love your reviews!
Thanks you!
I love the pink covers!
Great video Tim. I agree with you on 99 percent of what you said, but really man, the TCR. I'll pray for you brother. Keep up the good work.
I have gained so much from the Chain-Reference Bible. The objection to it that it feels like too much to learn about on each page, I really do not understand that at all.
100% agreed with you in terms of bright colours. I like dark brown/ burgundy or dark green or black covers for the Bible.
Blessings.
You and I have the same taste! My exact thoughts especially on the patriotic and Thompson Chain Bibles
I just use a King James Bible but not Schofield
I have to admit that I was one of those who placed too much importance on the contents of the notes in the Schofield KJV.
Once I realized that, I immediately purchased a KJV Bible with text only from Church Bible Publishers. Their Bibles can get expensive if you go for a luxury cover but otherwise are very good quality Bibles.
Hello Brother Tim. This was a great segment. Bibles are definitely personal and nobody likes the exact same bibles or else there would only be one format of bible sold. Blessings to you and your family 🙌👏
Love the TCR!! Have worn out several. I guess I’ll keep watching 😇
I just got a Chain-Reference this year and i use it every day.
Huge fan of the Treveris, the layout is new and different, but did not take long to become integral to my study. I would consider it a perfect EDC bible and recommend it to anybody looking for a new bible. Cheers.
Just ordered an ESV Black Pearl version. Super stoked. I read the sample and really enjoyed the layout. Can’t wait to hold it!
God bless!
Great video! First time viewer… I learned there’s a lotta Bibles out there! Lol
Welcome!
Stan
Thanks for sharing. As a Navy veteran, I agree with your position in patriotic bibles and brightly decorated ones.
I love that you do this for us, it is GREATLY appreciated Tim😊!
Isn't it wonderful that we have so many different types of Bible's to choose from, that there is something out there for practically every taste.
The Treveris looks lovely in my opinion. I might want to buy it now 😂
I agree with most everything you said.
For example:
* I don't like that there's a concordance.
I like it more as a study tool than a reader. It can be bit busy.
Back in the day, we used to call it the Tommy Gun.........😉

I love your positivity! Don't worry what others say. I turn to your channel daily to see what you have going on. Please, continue to be you. You're so fun to watch, and my favorite Bible reviewer. (Sorry Tim N., and Tim F., nothing personal. 😉)
That being said, fancy colored bibles are for teen, young adults and old ladies, like me.
I would say any Bible that does not lay flat from Genesis to Revelation kind of irritates me now.
That’s a good one.

This was so well done. Opinions abound, and people can get really divisive. Awesome, thank you!
Well expressed ... Good points on your personal opinions and people just have to go with what they like😊
Thank you for your honesty! Appreciate you!
I laughed out LOUD! I have used my Thompson since 1970. We all have our opinions. What really matters is that I READ and study the word. Because of your honesty and positivity I am a new subscriber.
Welcome!
The only one I really disagree with is the 5 solas. I get so excited when I see that on a rebind! But, I’m reformed, so that makes sense.
This felt like I just witnessed a tough therapy session 😂 Glad you got through it!
Love your candor and kindness!
Thank you so much!
What about when God said towards the end of Revelations?? DO NOT TAKE OR ADD TO THIS (The Bible)?????
Good morning everyone, hope everybody has had a great week. Well let’s get down to business Tim. If you don’t like the Bible, then it must be really bad. I can’t wait to see which ones they are
I like the Thompson chain kjv format. With the verses in the center of the page I find it easy to highlight a verse.
It took a lot of courage for you to do this, Brother, and I respect you and appreciate it. Also, I happen to have similar thoughts on most of those Bibles. Grace to you!
I appreciate that!
You don’t have to apologize,Tim, for having an opinion as long as it doesn’t violate Biblical doctrine you’re ok. 😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🕊️🕊️🕊️
Well done! Thank you Tim 🙏
I do like the Thompson chain reference bible for topic study... But it does have a lot of packed into a page
Thanks for this. I've always thought that you never met a bible you didn't like - turns out that you have both positive and negative opinions..but are nice about it. People take note - we need more of this.
I’m with you on all points Tim! Thanks for the video and your amazing channel.
Tim, I really value your insight and videos. Please ignore the haters, don't let the negative comments get you down. Keep doing what you're doing!😊
Thanks, will do!
I love how you approach this, as some two of my favorites are on your list. We all have different opinions on what we look for in a Bible.
Thank you for your service!
We actually had to make a formal policy to ban flags from the sanctuary.
By far my favorite is Old Scofield KJV with a plain black cover. I've gone through 2 in the past 14 years.
That last sentence. Different colors, different tastes, different colored lenses - it's all good. 🙂
Tim,
I respect your opinions concerning the various bibles you discussed. You were respectful and pleasant.
Thank you!
You did a wonderful job.
The Thompson Reference "wings" just seem so natural to me that I don't notice them 😂
Exactly what i was thinking
You will dig it love mine
I only recently discovered your channel...very nice work...I just ordered a Schuyler Treveris... I will agree that it looks like it will be a different reading experience...so many bibles are so very similar in layout...this one looks to me like a no nonsense reading experience...reminds me of, perhaps how a first or second temple Jew might have read their scripture...just like a book...nothing to distract...time will tell...as I said I just ordered it and it arrives in 2 days...thanks for all your fun reviews...much love in Christ, Matt
Yes! Hope you’re enjoying yours! Been using mine as a “main” since June!
We love you, Tim! I’m very proud of the approach you took. And you never need to mention the topic again (don’t do a follow up)! Perfect!
I appreciate that!
I imagine it was embarrassing too. Yeeks!
There is an issue that you’re embarrassed by the flag of one of the last free countries on earth.
Thank you! Someone finally said, Thompsons Chain Reference Bible is overwhelming. Great episode, I’ll subscribe.
