I just focus on filling doe tags after November 15th here on mid Michigan public land. I did, however, see a spike last year working a scrape in early December which was cool. I'm still hoping that one day a nice 2 or 3 year old buck will walk by my stand during the second rut. That would be the ultimate 🏆
In Maryland we get 2 buck tags per season with the option to buy a 3rd bonus tag. I’ve punched all 3 buck tags this year (archery in September, early muzzleloader in October, and my bonus tag in November) I’ve had my best season yet in 20 years of hunting. All 3 bucks were 4+ years old and mature for the area. It’s going to be hard to resist taking a doe or 2 and “take the rest of the season off” There’s not a ton of does in my area I hunt (maybe 15-20 that regularly show up) Do you think it would hurt my area to take a couple? I’m hunting 24 acres of hardwoods
Question for WHS & the community. I have a fantastic (albeit small) hunting area. It’s about 15 acres in total set up on a natural triangle of bedding area, water, and food plot (soybeans planted and natural acorns) I have a ground blind between water and bedding and a tree stand between food and bedding. Opening day I saw 15 including two bucks. I went out 2 days later and saw 8 (no bucks) I went out again 2 days ago and saw 2 deer. I’m trying to not over pressure the land but the acreage I have is what I have. What’s a good ratio of switching locations, skipping days, etc to ensure those deer stay nearby as opposed to running them off? To date this season I’ve shot one Doe and that’s it.
Northern central indiana I just had my target buck come out. Had a shot on him at 106yds 1 minute after legal light. 3rd time I have seen him. Had him at 30 yds chaising during pre rut. Saw him across the field the other time
Over the last 48 hours I’ve noticed a big up tick in feeding green source and few new juvenile bucks but it is all nocturnal. I’m not putting hunting pressure on the place either. Also none of the mature bucks I had been seeing end of October are ghosts but I hear neighbors seeing them. Lots of doe fawns this year maybe I’ll have a chance second rut. “SE OH”
Shot a nice 9 point with a doe in East Tennessee mountains last night! Thanksgiving week is usually the best week of the year for us in East Tennessee!
Hey Jeff, love your videos so informative. A couple of days ago on public land I walked into an area in the early afternoon, a couple of hrs later it got busy had a big buck came in just out of bow range. Went back in early morning, it was cold snow was crunchy I walked in as quietly as possible. I noticed all kinds of new scrapes that wernt there on my way out the night before and as you said dirt on top of snow. I was pumped, then all of a sudden crash bang and blowing everywhere all heck broke loose. It seemed like i was right in the middle of their bedroom. Nothing much I could have done even when I got to my stand, I'm positive that big buck blew me out and took off. Never saw or heard anything for the rest of the day. So basically I was moving around where i saw the action and i got busted.I would like to know if you have any tips on how to handle new public land and how not to get busted like that and if so what would you do to prevent that?
Thanks for everything! Shot 4 shooters in 2 years from help with HUNTWISE For those on the fence it’s worth it. It also comes in great for turkey season too.
Hi Bill! We have lots of totes on the land, but we don't touch them. When you shoot a few...the population explodes most of the time. I kind of look at it that you either kill them all or none at all. Now one thing I can't stand are the nest robbing raccoons...going to war with those things soon!

I’m hunting the Sam Houston National Forest here in TEXAS. I had a couple big boys on one camera then they appeared on another camera about a mile away. Now I can’t find them at all. They mainly move after midnight till 4 in the morning. Any tips and advice is greatly appreciated. I’ve been hunting these two bucks for two years now!
Hi Chad! If those bucks are middle of the night that means they are coming from a long ways away. I would focus on a common potential daylight bedding area they may be hanging out. They are moving somewhere during daylight...likely a mile away or more
SOOOO secondary rut (im figuring based on Nov rut) will happen about 6th on. this is the week AFTER gun week here. How would i go about hunting that after the orange army has their way?????
Find the bucks...low pressure pockets, quality late season food that is unpressured. We do that on 40 acres next to high pressure lands...the deer know where to go, in particular older bucks.
Unfortunately there is no such thing as unpressured pockets after the orange army 9 day drives! The deer are where you cannot get too period. And won’t move until after dark or right at dark! Orange army tromps through EVERY inch of what normally is unpressured pockets. Best bet is late season bow when they get back to a normal routine imo
I’m in ky and have not seen a lot of buck movement the ones we see on the cameras are together maybe 3-4 and all at night with only spikes and 4 pints in the day light we still have a whole field of soybeans that are standing and we have corn out at the feeders I’m kinda stumped about it and one of our farms that had great bucks last year we have almost zero sign no runs no scraps at all blows my mind only one buck on the camera all season any ideas what’s going on only 2 people hunting both farms
Crawl like a snake into it starting at midday with the wind in your favor and take your chances. There’s no getting out undetected, so vary the days you attempt to hunt that woodlot. I wish you luck, because you’re definitely gonna need it.
I notice you never really mention northern MI, alot of these videos you do are in way under pressured states compared to MI especially N MI. You get a buck in late Nov thru Dec your just straight out lucky! Like to here some content on MI more!
The guy can’t talk about every state. I sure here him talk about UP Michigan and Michigan a lot more than my state of NY. His tips have helped a ton of people tremendously. Just look through the comments.
I've tried the late season rut the last 7 yrs with no success. Unfortunately. The weird thing is each of the last 3 yrs I've stopped hunting just cuz of Xmas and everything, new yrs etc....that last week . Each year the last 3 yrs I've had huge bucks on my trail cams , smack Dab in the middle of the day chasing down/fawns and my jaws dropped each yr. So now I'm thinking what is going on? Watch...I'll switch up and hunt the last week and everything will switch over to right now ..hahahaha
Question, I was getting out of my (climber on my (brand new to me) 27 acre plot and spooked my target buck. I have a two acre field that I’ve found great sign around the edge off and one significant buck run from one side to the other. As I was walking out after dark, That buck winded me, blew and took two bounds back, is that spot ruined? I also had him on camera right there an hour after I left. Last time I sat there was Saturday, and saw nothing, and the next best huntwise day is Tuesday. Can I try again there then?
Since you’re conscientious about when you hunt your stands, you can take a chance because there’s other bucks out there. But, trust your instincts and hunt somewhere else if you can.
I’m struggling to find the good food sources in cover. I’ve seen one deer all season here in Oklahoma, yet there is sign all over the property. What’s a good way to find those food sources this time of year? This is my first year on a new property and I’m struggling!
@@chriskourliourod1651 I honestly don’t know. I got on the property when the season was already underway so I didn’t want to scout too much and over pressure everything. In the past I have had other people take me onto their property and point me to the stand or blind I should hunt. This is the first year I’ve had my own lease. Lots of learning for me right now.
Look up the September/October 2019 issue of THE BACKWOODSMAN magazine. I have an article in it titled “Old-Time Solitary Deer Hunting.” It will help you. For now, you can scout and hunt at the same time-you have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Think thick brush, ridge tops, or both combined as possible bedding areas, see how they connect with feed, and plan your hunt accordingly. Being cautious definitely has its place, but sometimes getting aggressive at crunch time really pays off. Pray for snow-I learned how to pattern deer by following tracks in the snow a little too long ago.😁
Went out last night n a small buck chasing does .3 different times.mi. n sat.night 12 -3. Two bucks fri.night ,same thing.n no hunters n no shooting.hunters gave up.
Another good video. I filled my tags this year. Have you ever (I am guessing not) purposely laid human scent in your prime hunting area? When I was a teenager my father and uncle swore by having someone walk through their woods at least four times a week, never the same route. All year round. The thought was the wildlife would get used to human scent. It seemed to work very well where we were. It worked for me in Michigan when I lived there, the big bucks just ignored my scent it seemed. Just curious as I know how "tame" deer seem to get in the suburbs of cities.
yes, that works. I hunt public land and people are always coming and going 7 days a week. on 11/8 I went hunting and left early because there were 6 dudes squirrel hunting on the ridge I was hunting. on 11/9 at 6:45am I shot the biggest buck of my life.
First day here in the arm pit of deer hunting seen a small 8 plowed a giant doe seen a small red fox alot of rd hunters shooting around making laps like sharks typical for this crap hole I hunt lol
Please for the love of God stop saying in the South Rut is unpredictable or based on weather conditions. I love your content but it’s well documented from each state and region by region in the south on rut casting. South east Texas has a very healthy timed rut. November 12 is peak climax for us and year after year it’s proven true. With a week before and week after of great hunting from bucks having rutting behavior. Again love your content and knowledge but this whole southern rut is unpredictable is absolutely demonstrably not true. At least within the last 15 years.
Your videos always confuse me because you constantly talk about northern states and I'm exclusive to Texans. So I never know what knowledge to apply to my situation because rut times here are different than elsewhere.

Good morning from the Woods.... great info as always Jeff. Got a decent Buck on Opening Weekend here in WI. Siill more Hunting to do
Peanut butter cream pies are amazing
I just focus on filling doe tags after November 15th here on mid Michigan public land. I did, however, see a spike last year working a scrape in early December which was cool. I'm still hoping that one day a nice 2 or 3 year old buck will walk by my stand during the second rut. That would be the ultimate 🏆
if you shoot the 2 year old, it'll never be a 3 year old. probably why most people in Michigan never see a 3 year old buck.
@@garywest2250 a 2 year old where I'm from is like a 4 year old most other places. Maybe someday it will even out
In Maryland we get 2 buck tags per season with the option to buy a 3rd bonus tag.
Do you use topo maps if so teach us how to read one and show us where the bucks bed on the map. Thanks
Such a huge doe population in N MI, it almost seems like a long slower continuous rut
Saw him across the field the other time
Weird happy / frustrating feeling.
Shot what may be my buggest same thanksgiving evening chasing hard ! Wish I could post a picture to TH-cam haha
Man that's awesome Austin...happy for you!
Do southern states like Arkansas have a second rut?
Definitely for at least portions of Arkansas...just much later.
i live in New Hampshire and what stinks is the deer density is low compared to a lot of states. It makes it tough.
Not good this year one thing changed is I got coyotes keep shooting them but they stay in the area don't think coyote stew will taste good lol
Hi Bill! We have lots of totes on the land, but we don't touch them. When you shoot a few...the population explodes most of the time. I kind of look at it that you either kill them all or none at all.
Now one thing I can't stand are the nest robbing raccoons...going to war with those things soon!
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I just saw something about that dang it lol yes coons will go here as well that's for your tips they do work for me most of them lol
They are moving somewhere during daylight...likely a mile away or more
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 thank you sir. And we appreciate all the great content you provide. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the video!
What brand/model of muzzleloader do you use?
Already got my buck but last year my cams blew up on December 6 on scrapes
Watching this while doing a skull mount. How would you recommend hunting the second rut on a property that is nocturnal from gun season pressure
Mid day
Lol you have killed me when you struggled through the time of the month but your right
man its been tough hunting for me this year. Weather has not been my friend this year.
The chocolate chip cream pie is the king! Lol
Any tips on hunting a small wood patch in the middle of ag fields?
Crawl like a snake into it starting at midday with the wind in your favor and take your chances. There’s no getting out undetected, so vary the days you attempt to hunt that woodlot. I wish you luck, because you’re definitely gonna need it.
Can I use a doe decoy when the rut is over?
I notice you never really mention northern MI, alot of these videos you do are in way under pressured states compared to MI especially N MI. You get a buck in late Nov thru Dec your just straight out lucky! Like to here some content on MI more!
He had a bullet point in his last video specifically on the U.P of Michigan
He talks about the UP in almost every video
The guy can’t talk about every state. I sure here him talk about UP Michigan and Michigan a lot more than my state of NY. His tips have helped a ton of people tremendously. Just look through the comments.
do you think that these tips work for other deer like elk or mule
I've tried the late season rut the last 7 yrs with no success. Unfortunately. The weird thing is each of the last 3 yrs I've stopped hunting just cuz of Xmas and everything, new yrs etc....that last week . Each year the last 3 yrs I've had huge bucks on my trail cams , smack Dab in the middle of the day chasing down/fawns and my jaws dropped each yr. So now I'm thinking what is going on? Watch...I'll switch up and hunt the last week and everything will switch over to right now ..hahahaha
Best time too hunt not a fan of first rut my 2nd rut and through December is 10times better than 1st rut
Thanks for the video Jeff! Do you run a heater in your redneck or pop up ? And if not is there a reason ?
Shot a buck with bow and a doe with my gun. We do earn a buck and I'm still in pursuit with my muzzleloader
I’m in Southern Maine by the way! Thanks you guys are awesome!
How close is the nearest bedding area?
I know you've said before to watch for dead deer along road and right now West Virginia is loaded with them
Muzzleloader is so quiet this year..
How rare is it to think you seen a doe give birth in mid October in southeast Michigan?
Went out last night n a small buck chasing does .3 different times.mi. n sat.night 12 -3. Two bucks fri.night ,same thing.n no hunters n no shooting.hunters gave up.
This is the only hunting site that I will watch , theres more to deer hunting then killing a deer and most hunters never will figure that out......
First day here in the arm pit of deer hunting seen a small 8 plowed a giant doe seen a small red fox alot of rd hunters shooting around making laps like sharks typical for this crap hole I hunt lol
... Be prepared for long sits... Snacks.... Just make sure you take the piles of empty beer cans and candy wrappers with you.
First
I'm pretty sure Kurt!
Does it make you feel special to be first lmao
@@Last_Chance. My friend, you don’t know how crazy this has become for me! I do this insanity ALL YEAR. I really need help!
To anyone who hunts near me, the second rut isn't real. It's just a marketing scam to sell products. Stay inside where it's warm! 😆
👍🏼🤣🤣👍🏼
Your videos always confuse me because you constantly talk about northern states and I'm exclusive to Texans. So I never know what knowledge to apply to my situation because rut times here are different than elsewhere.
That’s because it’s where he lives. It’d be impossible unless he moved to give advice on southern states.
@donnycanfield9326 true, there's just no one down here putting that kind of effort in.
@@UtiNo6 that really sucks because this guy is spot on with his info up here. Seems like someone would try a channel down there that had a lot of experience in the south.
Do not text that phone number if they reply with a number and a free giveaway. Its a scam.
Oh that monthly talk was too cringy 😁
How it works tho 😉
I have to agree. The peanut butter cream pie is so much better
It a second estrous cycle not a 2nd rut,,its when the does that didnt get breed the first time come back in heat or estrous,,,,, so its the second estrous cycle ,,,,,,,,a buck will rut from equinox on until late January
