I love hunting the 2nd rut here in Wisconsin with muzzleloader. I have shot some of my biggest bucks during this time. Unfortunately the muzzleloader season ends tomorrow when things are just starting to get good. I have observed young bucks chasing does the last three days. I'm sure the big boys will be out and about on Thursday when Wisconsin has their four day doe season.

I was raised hunting elk in colorado, now I am getting into deer hunting for the first time. I appreciate all the leg work you do to provide this content! I was worried to bring my daughter but I'm hunting with a bow, it is a family affair! Thank you again sir
Wow!! As a novice deer hunter, this information is incredible!! My season is over here in Northern MN, as I dont bow or muzzleload hunt (i aim to change that going forward). But I've been out doing some grouse hunting, finding several fresh scrapes even with fresh urine, with as well as scat, and several fresh rubs some on trees with diameters of 5-6 inches others smaller. Major movement signs through a thicket along a low dried up swampy area on public land. Your videos have been extremely helpful, thank you from the bottom of my heart Jeff!
From personal observation, the rut where I hunt(NW Louisiana) seems to be continuous from mid-Nov to mid-Dec, as the doe fawns are coming into heat and the older does are cycling in similar fashion. Bucks are all over the place during that time. Fawning occurs over the similar length of time with fawns appearing over a 45-60 day period. The generally mild (few days or just hours) Winters surely contribute to this.
I would agree with this, I hunt east Texas and have noticed rut activity during week before thanksgiving and the week after. I have also seen activity just days prior to Christmas.
I always did well during Halloween week. The wildlife biologist that worked for 30 years for the Conservation Department said the rut is always the same. I harvested a buck always from Halloween to Nov. 7. The second rut is around Dec. 5th. We are seeing the bucks on camera again around daylight. The temperature is dropping, I would hit the woods this week for an opportunity to bag a buck!
Watched you for years as I was raised in Maine hunting northern whitetail. Now I live in Florida and the tips don’t apply as much when it comes to terrain. But the thermals and wind definitely still applies. I hope you can give us some southern hunting tips someday :) Florida rut is all over the place.
At my place there is only one rut because there is a firing squad that surrounds my property and there are usually no bucks left. This year there was a 4x4 buck left a few days before the end of the season and I am hoping he lives for another 2 years. He may not though. I have 2 of your books and have read 1 of them cover to cover. The second book I will read this winter while it is -30 and too cold to do much outside. There will be major changes to my property in the years to come. Thanks WHS.
First year bow hunting... really looking forward to taking advantage of being able to continue the hunt into this 2nd rut, which would have otherwise been missed if i only hunted gun season (KY). Thanks!
I harvested a 8-point buck Nov 18th in south Carolina and was chasing a few does im going this afternoon to hopefully get another one good luck everyone on the remainder of the season and stay safe
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 got quick question about wind I'm sitting here in my climber tree stand does high winds probably 25 mile gust does it keep deer from moving? And is it worth hunting when it's like this?
@@brandonburdette7895I’ll speak from my own experience. When the winds get over 10-15 with gusts, I don’t see deer. Also when winds are out of the east I have seen very little movement. It’s like a switch.
Jeff Sturgis is hands down the whitetail authority. Another Virginia hunter here. I own property in the mountains of Virginia and the eastern Virginia flat lands (plant food plots on both every year). Got a really nice 8 point on November 16th this year following a hot doe into a food plot and grunting the entire time. 28 days later is around December 14th. I'll be spending as much time as possible in the stand the next couple weeks. Best of luck to all the Old Dominion hunters!
I’m still learning but understand the rut in North Alabama doesn’t happen until late December and the first couple weeks in January. Thank you for these videos! Helps a lot!
It seems that the further North you are that the rut window is specific and tight. Ive always believed that the rut comes in middle to late November in middle NC, but others believe the common calendars which say 5 November.
In eastern Tennessee we have had one continuous rut, never really had a full blown rut this year. The old timers used to call it a trickle rut. A few does at a time are ready. I have personally seen bucks roaming in daylight hours every sit since muzzleload opener. I only hunt the weekends cause of work, but I have seen bucks at all hours each sit. Killed a big body 6 and a wide 9. Just waiting to fill my doe tag. Funny thing this year in this part of our state, in the surrounding 3 counties, all of the hunters I talk to talk about the lack of does this year
My cameras are looking like there is a fawn or 2 on my mom's place that's coming in cause they're hitting the scrape and licking branch more and there running around, and a few small bucks showed up, big boy was there last week but nothing of late, it's 10 acres so he could be close I just can't go after him, I hate it to cause he disappeared the whole peak rut hopefully he doesn't vanish on this second phase, he is about a 150 class super clean 10 and he looks to be around 5, there so random in the mountains of KY it's sickening, lol great job fellas as always!!!!
I've had a lot of good rut hunts on December 7th through 10th. If you look at the calendar that is 4 weeks from November 9th through 12th which is peak rut in Missouri. This year due to time I will only get to bow hunt 12/10, but I always try to get out at least one day with the bow. I also try to target areas with young does, because this is when doe fawns start coming in as well. Feed with lots of does, especially young does.
Northern Michigan native here now living in the Piedmont of Georgia. Our peak rut where I live seems to be 11/15- my observations coupled with the state rut map. However, i watched a doe get bred in my yard on September 9 once, and I see plenty of activity well into December including an intense chase yesterday 12/5. My cameras have logged consistent chasing activity from 10/25 through 12/1 with a peak 11/10-11/15. We have an intense pre rut that begins 10/15 as marked by all morning buck activity and a marked uptick of dead bucks on roadsides. My info is that peak rut times in GA are determined by deer-car accident data. This is a long way of saying here in the south the bell curve appears to be much longer with a possible bump in December. A local podcast cited a study that said there is almost no young of year doe fawns bred in the south and it’s mostly a northern phenomenon. This was counterintuitive to me. Another factor in my hunting areas is that on the private land in ag country where I live, we appear to have far more bucks than does. I had 7 bucks on my cams regularly but a max of 5 does. I have now seen about 20 different bucks on my cams and while hunting but still the same 5 does. Even my public land spots have either 50/50 ratio or slightly more bucks than does by camera and observation. Athens Georgia has a dense urban deer herd that skews to does and seems to get an intense second rut probably due to some does getting missed but it’s a numbers game with about 100 deer/sq. mile vs 25 deer/sq. mile on the public I hunt according to the biologist I talked to. TLDR is to say not that I don’t believe in a second rut, but the bell curve is so long here in the south it’s almost impossible to detect where I hunt and local population dynamics play a heavy role in whether does get missed during their first estrus.
Was looking forward to spending my free weekend bow hunting up north in Wisconsin for a good buck. Thanks, dnr for putting a statewide antlerless hunt this weekend. Why! ughh
Well here in Ohio, North of Columbus, I saw bucks following does on the 11th of November. Not chasing or harassing. I believe the does in my area were in estrus the 15th through the 18th. So, I'd say in about 10 days it'll be the second rut. I'm not seeing any daytime activity now.
South central pa is where I hunt and I have had no luck. I can only go on the last 2 days so gonna use mr sturgis’s tactic and get in the middle of a bunch of hunters on state game land

I’m in MD and still don’t understand the rut here. I admittedly have some pretty bad properties w/ not a lot of doe activity anyway. But still, just haven’t seen an uptick. I still have so much learning to do.
Im going to be hunting December 26-31st in upstate NY. Mycameras have been dead. Can you do a video on last vhance hunts. The season closes after that in ny.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 id of loved it even more of there was public near by to hunt. But it made me itch otherwise I wouldnt have gone out today with an hour left of light. Didn't see anything but I heard them they are still pressured where I hunt on public didn't quite make it to me at last light but he made it right at 530 unfortunately. I didnt care though that spot I was t coming back to until early season next year so I got up and made noise on my way out and he still wasn't far and spooked and ran. Confirmation he beds there though. Second sit in that location first being around last week or beginning week of October snd novrmber
I see you do a ton of habitat improvement. After all that work is done, how do you manage your deer to determine what a “shooter” is? Are you trying to get bucks to a certain age, certain rough score, shooting anything that’s not a basket or just taking deer you’re happy with?
What about the temperature change does that matter? In Ontario Canada we’ve been getting rain then shifts back to plus 10 temps during the day and night
Awesome video. You are right Jeff! Yes I called out the Georgia rut lines. They colored south west Georgia county and said that county line is first rut. Then 6 hours north that rut is 2 weeks later. I laughed because it was coming from a guy selling deer products. He was so wrong. There was no scientific reasoning. It was all opinion.
Look at all your videos and pics and you will quickly realize what I’ve preached for YEARS. And that is sunshine is the key. Sunny mornings are by far the best. October lull is nothing but blah no energy cloud cover weather
According to what youre saying theres like a week in between these ruts.. that makes it all one rut. It makes no sense to break it up into 3 periods within a 3 month period.
I have a question that I can’t find the awnser to anywhere else… so basically there’s this one 30 acre plot beans and wooded area included where there’s about 20-30 does, I haven’t seen a single buck the 4 times I sat there but I saw every kind of doe and there’s several little ones. Is that a good place to go when the second rut comes in or will those little does go to other feilds and properties away from their mothers feild? How should I hunt this?
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751How does the timing change base on longitude? For example, if you say the U.P. of Michigan is in rut in early October does that mean that 5° lower, in Columbus Ohio that it will take place x number of days later? Thank you for all you content. Trying to learn the right way.
I believe there are doe’s that go in heat a second time. I just can’t imagine that the buck to doe ratio would be that off balance anywhere to where they would need to go in heat a third time.
If yall wanna know about rut where you live go outside and observe and hunt and watch it go down. Youll figure it out the sign tells you whats going on
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 yes a few times out and there you have it. I hunt public land so I believe the location of the deer and the rut is impacted drastically by pressure. I hunt about 6000 acres but the width is only about 2 miles wide and it's tall across the map but not wide and a river runs through the middle of it all with big drainages. It's tough but there can be success for the people that put the time and effort in

I hunt public land in the tiny state of Rhode Island , look it up , you should know where the sign is going to be based on previous yrs genius , y’all , very intelligent lol I vote free speech for the “dumb”let me guess your favorite movie is Deliverance?
Man I hope the 2nd rut is better than the first one 😢 This year in Oklahoma on the Kansas border there waa hardly any rut activity. Slowest I've seen in years!! I hunted 19 days straight for the last 2 weeks i saw 3 bucks all 2.5 not a single mature buck and from Halloween to the end of November i saw a couple of young bucks, no mature bucks. Now all the stands i hunt are usually big buck hangouts and this year nothing! My last mature bucks were on camera Sept.27 ... I didn't hunt any of my good stands so i know i didn't burn it out. To warm? Would still be on camera in the middle of the night. I hunted the river bottom. Wheat fields, woods, nothing but little bucks. Hopefully its a little cooler and other hunters will be pretty much non existing. Usually about December 10- 18 we see the second rut and I've shot my biggest buck January 13th following a fawn. Good luck to all.
IMO - if you have to hunt heavily pressured public land as I do, don’t hold your breath for any wild 2nd rut activity. This video is geared toward wealthy land owners or lease holders only.
What your missing to say is the 2nd and 3rd rut has alot to do with the fawns becoming old enough to come into estrus. Im not sure why you dont address this, obviously you dont know.
Always amazing how some states give a dam about their deer herd then other states like mine in Massachusetts don’t care about management. These “biologists” I swear never get out from behind their desks and put boots on the ground. There is my rant
The weather/temperature has NOTHING to do with it. It may change to nighttime activity, but deer HAVE to breed, regardless of. If hot weather canceled the rut, southern deer would be obsolete.
FOR VIRGINIANS! I hunt the mountains. Deer studys say most scrape activity happens 1-2 weeks before the rut. My cams have picked up more buck activity at scrapes for the last week and a half. I'm in central NC. Do you know of any good resources like yours for our area? We rarely get any snow. Our Winters are mild so the deer act a little differently.
I believe!!!!!!!!!!
100inches of snow not a lot we didn’t get any in south Jersey last year lol. 300inches as an average holy shit!!!
300 inches sucks, lol
Scrapes and rubs are open and apparent in Central Minnesota!
Tagged out in Va kinda bittersweet now trying to get my brother a late season buck!
Pretty dang cool tho Drew! Bittersweet but pretty dang awesome 😁 Good luck with your bro!
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751yes it is
Well i seen a very big mature buck at 240pm today cruising he was most definitely looking for a hot hookup
Love it!!
Jeff I asked this a few videos ago
How often do you change your muzzle load powder during the season
I keep mine in the pole building also
Hi Chad! Every 2 to 3 days for about 6 weeks. I do a full clean every 4 to 4 shots
Any thoughts on mid Missouri?
Mid December for sure!
It's quite obvious that there's more then the main rut when you do a lot of scouting on the snow.
Amen to that! Experienced hunters know...
What about the temperature change does that matter? In Ontario Canada we’ve been getting rain then shifts back to plus 10 temps during the day and night
Not for the timing of the rut...but definitely for daylight activity!
Thanks Brian! They actually use a lot of science in FA. Too much, in fact, ha
Jeff, I'm in NH. Longitudinally North of Pennsylvania and probably the same as Michigan. You think my area is experiencing the 2nd rut right now?
Hi John, this is prime 2nd rut timing for you right now!
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 "I gotta go"! Got a perfect North wind and a perfect afternoon food source to get to!
Southern Michigan had bucks scrapping and chasing doe last Saturday, 12/2, the Opening Day for Michigan Muzzleloader Season.
This is right in my wheel house
Nice ..good luck!
Jeff is there any data on does not being receptive....had a guy tell me the other day that it seems like his does weren't receptive.
Not at all...if they are in heat, they get bred if a buck is available. No playing shy in natures game 😁
Jeff you must go thru a lot of batteries with all them cameras
Would rattling still work in the 2nd rut?
Yes for sure in areas that rattling works!
When would central Illinois second rut be
Within a week for certain! This weekend could be hot with the cooler temps!
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 ok thank ya I’ll hit it hard this weekend
Hey Jeff! Where can we buy a WHS hat? I would love to support and promote your brand with a noggin cover!
Hi Jesse!! Right on our website store...we really appreciate it!!
www.whitetailhabitatsolutions.com
During the rut does the weather play a role in when they will be moving still? It's going to be cold all week, but back up in the 50s this weekend?
It's like Santa Clause the Easter Bunny, you have to believe, as I do. There are 3 Ruts.
Definitely, only real 😊
You guys used lots of different tactics to harvest this year, tree stands, public from the ground, Jen in a playpen. 😂
Lol, so dang true!! Thanks Akira, been a fun year!
Damn Jeff, Why you have to flex those secret bibs on us like that 😅. I can’t wait till Firstlite comes out with them.
He is grinning because he farted 10 minutes ago and he is still getting whiffs of it.
I believe there are doe’s that go in heat a second time. I just can’t imagine that the buck to doe ratio would be that off balance anywhere to where they would need to go in heat a third time.
If yall wanna know about rut where you live go outside and observe and hunt and watch it go down. Youll figure it out the sign tells you whats going on
The cool thing is...same time every year 😉👍
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 yes a few times out and there you have it. I hunt public land so I believe the location of the deer and the rut is impacted drastically by pressure. I hunt about 6000 acres but the width is only about 2 miles wide and it's tall across the map but not wide and a river runs through the middle of it all with big drainages. It's tough but there can be success for the people that put the time and effort in
“Y’all” just look at
last yr will be the same this yr ! No need to go in and spoil your hunting spot , “Y’all” just use cell cameras that’s it period!
@ just look at your post , you know the sign from previous yrs y’all
@ totaly struck out ! Hunt smarter not harder ! I hunt public land in the tiny state of Rhode Island , look it up , you should know where the sign is going to be based on previous yrs genius , y’all , very intelligent lol I vote free speech for the “dumb”let me guess your favorite movie is Deliverance?
Killed a buck in Ohio in January muzzleloder, chasing a doe. Third rut.
A GREAT time in OH!
We had a peak rut the first week of Nov then I shot my buck, chasing a doe on Nov 27th chasing a doe like crazy!
I can’t even legally hunt now because I live in New Brunswick Canada
Dan Elliott...BUT, what a beautiful place to live I imagine...
Yes it is very beautiful. and we just got our foot of snow.@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
Killed my biggest buck in the 2nd rut.
So dang awesome Curt, I love this time of year!
Always amazing how some states give a dam about their deer herd then other states like mine in Massachusetts don’t care about management. These “biologists” I swear never get out from behind their desks and put boots on the ground. There is my rant
Deer are going to go into heat every 28 days until they are bred. That's why you have late born fawns.
3rd and 4th rut? 🤣
Yes, for the smart, experienced hunters 👍
Just so everybody knows deer have sex when does come into estrus it doesn't matter what date of the year it is
The weather/temperature has NOTHING to do with it. It may change to nighttime activity, but deer HAVE to breed, regardless of. If hot weather canceled the rut, southern deer would be obsolete.
More loss with wolves
Is this your daughter?
