I see a few comments mentioning taxes, so let me clarify. I include sinking funds in my monthly budget. Those include all of my yearly expenses, which not only include taxes on what I earn but also property taxes, car registration, insurance, etc. Those are all included in my monthly goal, so I did not mention them separately, but rest assured, they are accounted for. ;)

It’s clear you’re on top of things. Which is a completely different case then many people who have debt. I have faith you’re gonna be OK. All three of you. Gd willing. Knocking on my armoire, which is made of wood, etc. Just to be safe. I’m a little superstitious if you didn’t figure it out. Lol hugs and keeping you guys- especially Aiden right now- in my thoughts and prayers too. ❤

Unless I missed something (entirely possible) even though you covered wear and tear on the car in the beginning, I didn’t see that factored into the “profit” when you calculated $17.11/hour.
That said, in my area, they are so desperate for workers in fast food, supermarkets, etc., that they pay the same, without the hustle, fluctuations in income, vehicle wear and tear, etc. This leaves me wondering why people do this instead of enjoying a constant and reliable schedule and income over at McD’s.

Hello. I am a licensed insurance agent of 30-plus years in the state of Maryland. So sorry to hear that you were injured in your fall. However, did you know as an independent contractor you could buy workers compensation coverage for yourself? That means should you fall down and get injured, your medical expenses and lost wages for time off work would be covered based on the rules and regulations in your state. It is also a policy that is tax deductible as a business expense for you. You could also purchase life insurance and disability insurance which again is tax deductible as a business expense. A few things you forget to mention are the as follows. The mileage on your vehicle is tax deductible as a business expense. Gasoline and maintenance of your vehicle are tax deductible as a business expense. Be sure to contact your accountant to discuss these items. I am an insurance agent, not a tax advisor.

I was an Uber driver on and off for 5 years. It was my side hustle. I was able to pay bills and rent and have extra cash. It really came in handy between primary jobs. In fact, it saved my a$$! As for taking the small dollar rides or deliveries… I took them all! I know people think it’s not with it but to me it was because it all adds up and counts towards Quest Bonuses. In other words I really made it work for me. But of course, I agree that there is a dark side. Gas was the biggest expense that cut into my earnings. And you needed gas to keep you in the road. My car maintenance was another thing but there were places that gave Uber drivers big discounts on oil changes and maintenance so that helped a little bit.

As a part-time Uber Eats driver, there is nothing worse than a jack-wagon who will pay $25 for a taco and a Dr Pepper but has the audacity to only tip $1. I'm curious if you know this. Live in San Francisco. I ordered some pet food for my dog, a $225 order, with free delivery. The store uses Door Dash to deliver its orders.
When I was checking out it asked if I wanted to tip. So I selected one of the three choices, $25. From the pet supply store to my place is about two miles as the crow flies.
My question: as a general rule did the Door Dasher get the entire $25, or did the Door Dash company and the pet store each take a cut? (I ask because I'm wondering how unfair the system is for the Door Dashers.)

Gas mileage and wear and tear on your car is deductible but you need to keep track of At the end you have to figure out how much you used the car for business vs personal use. Also your insurance might not cover you if you are using car for employment. You need a rider. Also check with your state DMV to see if you need a commercial license

Self employment taxes is another thing to factor. After those, federal and state income taxes you might have cleared $13-14 an hour which I would consider essentially minimum wage. In my opinion gig work like this is only worth it part time if you’re able to do the peak lunch and dinner hours consistently and do something else during the slow times. I used to average close to double what you did an hour it’s about maximizing efficiency and only working the peak hours.

You are considered self-employed and independent contractor so you have to file schedule C's. When you do this if you purchase your own health insurance 100% of it is a tax write-off. If you go to a restaurant and talk to another Uber driver that is a 100% tax write-off even if it's in Nevada or any other place in the United States even the plane ride is a tax write-off and your hotel. Your tabs are a tax write-off. Everything that you purchase for your job is a tax write-off you must save all receipts. Even your taxes at the end of the year of the year before is a tax write-off. The more write-offs you have at the end of the year the more you get back but you must show the receipts added up before you go to the CPA. Your mileage is a write off. Turn your car into a company car that is a tax write-off. The more you know about being self-employed the better off you are everything you purchase down to a paperclip or a cup for the inside of your car is a tax write-off and at the end of the year you will get back a lot of money.

I started doing UE & DD full time last year. I had a full time job that I quit due to it being a drain on my mental health. I worked for this company for 5 years and couldn’t do it any more. I missed so much time with my kids and family and my full time job was draining me emotionally and mentally. I’m not making as much doing gig work, but my mental health is 100x better and I get more time with my family. I know I won’t be doing gig work forever, but for now it’s paying my bills and allowing me the freedom I need to work on myself and spend time with my favorite people. I haven’t DoorDash or Uber eats in months. I do have a normal full-time job doing irrigation work. Thank God for that it is weekly pay. I make decent money with that but just like she says any job has its setbacks for sure. The only way gig work is somewhat profitable is if you accept minimum $7 order and $2 per mile and constant. You are correct about car expenses and depreciation will shock many people with high mileage cars when its too late down the road. Accepting a $5 order while driving your car at your expense is ridiculous.
20 years ago if you asked a cab driver to pick up food for $5 and deliver it 2 miles away he would laugh in your face. ....20 YEARS AGO!!!!
Today with costs of housing, food , gas etc are triple what it was 20 years ago and people accept $3 offers....LOL

So welfare or worker it makes no difference, if we’re fortunate we should help those who are less fortunate or have fallen on hard times. We all have been or may be in a bad position at least once in our lives. So your comment isn’t relevant or funny.

    Another consideration.
    Check with your car insurance.
When delivering, you are using your car for "commercial" activity. Most standard insurance policies DO NOT cover "commercial" use, unless you add commercial use to your policy.
Know a pizza delivery driver who got in a wreck while delivering and his insurance paid $0.00.
