If you noticed the other stumps that weren't grinded down correctly. You should've taken that opportunity to call the customer, tell him you can grind them down properly. And charged him enough just to break even on the job.

@renatorios546, your right!! I should have asked on that job. Keep grinding sir!!!

Chris, whenver I get put in a situation where I have to bid a stump over the phone from pictures I give a range. For example I'd say "the price to grind that stump in your photos is between $275-$475 but in order to confirm specific pricing in writting I'll have to be given the opportunity to view the stump in person". At least that way you have some wiggle room on price and if they ask for you to view the stump in person to give a firm price you have half an idea that they are one, serious about getting the stump removed and two, they aren't completely afraid of your price range.

Derek, your dead on with the $275 -$475 pricing. I know better

I'm gonna start off with thanks for an awesome comment seriously. This is exactly how I bid over the phone from the beginning. Luckily it worked out well Luckily, being new I wasn't sure. Then I started asking the customer to put a five gallon bucket on the stump because I know how big that is and can for sure compair them. If it's the same size or covers it it's my minimum price.

How many calls y’all get a day? I’m looking to start up a business

  • @andycapp8843

Agree, always carry out a site visit before submitting a quotation, otherwise it’s an estimated cost if you’re relying on photographs and cover yourself in your Terms and Conditions. You then go on to criticise the works carried out by another contractor without providing the full facts. Who’s to know the owner didn’t hire a pedestrian grinder and either diy or have a local odd jobber do the work. What did the owner actually tell the contractor what was required….was it a professional job or one based on price….I just want the stumps removed is a call i get very often!!
You won’t have lost money…not made as much profit as usual is a calculated guess having watched the video.
That machine simply ate the stump like it was a mid morning snack. Good to watch.
If the customer wants any work doing with timber other than grinding, the best plan is to charge a separate fee by the hour with a proviso that if you encounter wire or nails you charge for a new chain on the saw. We carry a saw that is specifically for cutting stumps backs to just above ground level with a well worn but serviceable chain for that very reason and take a photograph of the offending metal.
Finally…never put 100% trust in the customers account of the work to be done, they’re out to trick you.

Andy Capp, your right! Some people will try to take advantage of you if you let them. I think everyone should write up a contract on the jobs. Thanks for watching

I wasn’t in this type of industry, but groundskeeping is on the same principle. I always went out & bid a yard, because the consumer can’t judge distances by area, & even though my time is precious, whether working or at my leisure, I don’t like mistakes. Sure it happens, that’s normal but you try to minimize those, for the sake of your equipment & yourself.

Phone estimates are brutal. I agree do what you promise. How about when you stand behind your estimate and they try to add more.. Some just don’t see the economy now and how much it is just to do a fair price.
Keep up the great work. Time To Grind

After 30 years of grinding stumps, let me give you a little tip on moving those big cut offs around. Always carry you a big eye hook in your tool box. That way when you need to move it you can take a hammer tap into the stump and screw it in there and get you some mule tape and pull it around anywhere you need to. It makes life a lot simpler.

Chris, what size is your chainsaw? I have two Farm Boss saws that I am finding to be inadequate. I think they are 50cc. What should I be moving up to? Thanks man, Jim.

Your To Good Chris!!!!! Way To Much Work For Probably Not Enough $$$ When You Get On Jobs Like That The Customer Is Already Pissed Before You Get There, and Sometimes They Expect The New Contractor To Do More Or They Just Try And Screw You Because They Figure That All The Contractors Are In Cahoots Together!!! I Dont Bid Any Work Over The Phone!!! Sometimes the customer Purposely Misleads Contractors Trying to get them to Give A Bid Over The Phone!!!!! Dont ever do it!!! Then they expect you to stick to it, and if you don't then they bad mouth you!!!! Like It's Your Fault!!! That Word Is Half---Assed!!!! 😁😁😁🤗🤗🤗👍👍👍😎😎😎🙂😃😇😇

Lol, you don't even have to do any hard labor with that thing. I run a little manual 12" grinder from home depot and would charge 200 for that stump and it would probably take me 2 hours

See I agree with doing while you are heres within reason but I will politely remind the customer what we agreed on. Little old ladies are a weakness though. I just think how many of them had a man that made sure everything they couldn't do was done and they lived that way for decades. It leaves that person with a lot more than a job well done money can't buy that.

No one bided on my tree stump. I ended up using my anatomy skills, and dissect the tree stump.

    • @yanzhangmd

It is almost exactly like anatomy. Cut one layer to access the other layers.
