This was a good video. I enjoyed hearing what others think about the city I was born and live in. But there were a few things that you may have left out. Aside from the subway (which is a nightmare when you live here), walking, ferries and cabs, we also have MTA buses that coincide with our subways. They are good for traveling from west to east in Manhattan. And anyone coming here needs a Metrocard in order to ride our MTA transportation. Also, aside from all the attractions that you suggested, we have zoos in every borough, the Aquarium in Brooklyn which is located near our famous Coney Island, Ellis Island, Roosevelt Island, Botanical Gardens in the Bronx, a ton of historical tours, the list goes on and on. Our restaurants are expensive along with everything else but some are worth the money spent. Also, when traveling through Central Park the best time is during the day. And finally, we are not chilly 8 months of the year and only 2 months hot. It starts getting hot around here in May and these past few years it hasn't let up until the end of September. So it can be difficult to navigate our weather some times. All and all, this was a great video and there is a million things to do here in New York. And to everyone that watches this, don't just limit your visit to just Manhattan. The other boroughs have a ton to offer as well. The famous Yankees play in the Bronx, the Mets in Flushing Queens, the Knicks and Rangers in Manhattan and the Nets and Islanders in Brooklyn. So 1 visit just won't do :). Sorry for the long comment lol.
@@danielinnicg2114 Weather is variable for St. Patrick's Day. It is usually cold and blustery but can be warm. I remember one St P's Day it was in the 70s F, but usually is 40 to 50 F. Many people arrive in NYC without being in a New York State of mind, and in a fast paced environment like NY that’s a sure way of getting into a chaotic and expensive mess. Also, NYC is generally-speaking a very safe place, but with any large metropolitan city you still need to keep your wits about you and be aware of your surroundings; especially, if you plan on riding the metro late at night. The trick to an enjoyable vacation, regardless of where you happen to be visiting, is prior research and advanced planning. Great video.
Nice! I moved to Manhattan from NJ in 2004 (hope I never have to leave) and love to watch these videos. It is not my intention to offend anyone but after visiting Times Square for 30 minutes, don't waste any more time (unless you want to eat at chain restaurants or buy postcards). It really is a safe, fun city and the locals are NOT rude. Maybe a little more guarded than other parts of the world, but always willing to help.
I'm usual a solo traveller but coming to NYC with my friend to see Fleetwood Mac Madison garden never been b4 so 4 day trip I can't wait 9th March Glasgow to London .flight to JFK airport super excited.i will go solo once this trip
I'm from New York City and Chris you did a good job describing my hometown. I'll add a couple of things more. Other great places to visit in NYC (especially in the summer) are the best team in the history of American sports The NY Yankees (in the Bronx). Also in the Bronx is The Bronx Zoo which has a ton of animals to watch from a safe distance. Also, the iconic and most famous concert arena in the United States called Madison Square Garden where Led Zepellin shot their movie The Song Remains The Same and where many stars like Elvis, Sinatra, Ali and sports teams like the Knicks and Rangers call home. In Brooklyn, you can go see the Botanical Gardens, and Coney Island Amusement Park. In Queens, you can get tickets to the tennis U.S. Open which is one of the Tennis grand slam events of the world and you can go see the baseball team The Mets. When taking the ferry to Staten Island, the 5th borough for me to mention, you can see the Statue of Liberty like Chris said. The only other major attraction connected to Staten Island is The Verrazano Bridge which is the longest suspension bridge in the U.S. and is the bridge seen in the iconic movie Saturday Night Fever. You can also go on Ghost Tours Vans and other major attractions like Macy's superstore on 34 street, the Jacob Javits Center, 30 Rock where tv shows like Jimmy Fallon, Saturday Night Live and in the summer The Today Show has live free concerts at Rockefeller Center with the biggest singers on the planet giving free concerts. One note..... never, ever take a taxi or uber car during the day time anywhere in Manhattan. The traffic is horrific and getting worse. If you are in any of the other boroughs you can take a taxi most times without a traffic jam. To save money I recommend checking out Bed and Breakfast rooms in private houses in Queens, New York through Craigslist. I also recommend that you go to a super market and buy a lot of food when you arrive in New York and keep it in your hotel room to avoid expensive restaurants. Bring a hot plate stove to your hotel room to heat up your food. Cheers.
Chris, I am a native New Yorker; who no longer lives there. When I go back I stay in the Hotel New Yorker at Penn Station. It is an Art Deco gem! You should also mention the many National Parks, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are not the only ones! There is also the NY Transit Museum at Jay Street, Brooklyn.
I love your videos. We're going to New York and Vegas this year for the first time ever and we have binged all of your videos on them. You're properly genuine and informative and not doing these things for Instagram or likes etc. Keep up the good work!
I was kind of worried about coming to New York, and this video helped me out a lot. Very complete, at least everything a tourist needs to know is in here. Good stuff 👍🏼
My husband and I are so glad we watched this video. We took Chris’s advice to buy the Statue if Liberty tickets ahead of time. We plan to go there in June but were only able to buy 2-tier (ferry/statue pedestal with guided tour) tickets. 3-tier (incl. crown) was already sold out until August. We always enjoy watching Yellow Productions, especially on Japan.
Glad you told people about the borough's. I lived in Queens and that is a great, cheap place to eat. I found NY'ers to be pretty friendly. I only lived there for 2 years but miss it a lot. Walk to the extreme right or walk fast. Major rule. Blocking the sidewalks is like blocking the roads in any other city.
I also want to add that New York City parks are a great place to see birds, especially during spring migration and again during fall migrations because it is located along the Atlantic flyway. Hundreds of species have been observed. There are free guided bird walks.
After years of visiting CA, TX, GA, Mo & AR for years ,I finally visited NYC after telling people I planned to & watching them go. June, 2018 will be my 10th year 2-3 times / year. I was hospitalized in 2015 and something unexpected happened in 2016 or else this would be my 12th year. I can hardly wait to visit this year. Chicago is Awesome, but New York is Exciting.
I've lived in New York all my life. I always like to check out videos like these to see how accurate they are. It's always interesting to see what non-New Yorkers have to say about my city. I must thank you for mentioning ahead of time that there's more to New York than Manhattan. Personally I hate the fact that everyone seems to think that Manhattan is the only fun place to go to when visiting New York. There are plenty of other beautiful places to see if you know where to look. I live in Queens & there's a lot of nice places to see here. And as far as Manhattan goes, I hate going there. Anyway, great video. I quite enjoyed it.
Most important rule: Move or get out of the way. The sidewalks & stairs are like roads, do NOT block or stand in the middle, stand aside. Walk on the right side, walking is just like driving, same rules apply. For getting East/West in MH, just use cross-town buses or ones that go E/W. Anyway, good video, he's actually got good advice! Also: Atomic Bagel by Columbia University, go there in the morning when they're hot and fresh and DON"T toast them.
If money's an issue, I've read that the Salisbury on 57th st is very reasonably priced, clean, friendly, and attentive, and is basically within walking distance of a lot of the Midtown attractions...It's not high end, but are you going to sit in your Hotel room, when there's so much to see, and do within walking distance?..I never stayed there. This is what I read from many reviews, about a year ago.
Haha, kind of. Actually, what you want to do is LOOK in the direction you're walking, like when crossing a street or making a turn. This indicates to others where you're going and we all subconsciously read and interpret that intention correctly. Try it and you'll never bump into anyone crossing a busy street downtown. :-)
that's what I do in Vienna too actually. Not wanting to show off but I feel like I am walking faster than 90% of the people around me. Don't know why that is, I don't even feel like I am walking super fast, but you always want to read where people are going. Worst are those looking at their smartphones and stop at points like at the exit of escalators lol. Another question: Is it ok to wear a T-shirt and short trousers in NYC during summer? :D It seems to me that new yorkers have much greater feeling for fashion and styles but maybe that's just my opinion. What do you think?
Take the bus crosstown. From river to river is 3 miles. Go up to the Bronx for the Yankees, Little Italy and the zoo; easy subway. TKTS has a box office down near South Street Seaport, shorter lines. Take a Circle Line boat tour at W42nd around the island; have a few beers and get some sea air while going really close to Statue and great skyline views night or day.
Born and raised in New York (specifically in the Bronx) it definitely is interesting seeing what other people think of my city lol. SOHO, 14th street, Williamsburg (Brooklyn) are also cool places to go shopping and hangout as well. And don't be afraid to visit the Bronx, there's The Bronx Zoo (8th largest zoo in the world; 5th in the US), The Botanical gardens, Yankee Stadium, Pelham Bay Park and Van Cortlandt park (two of the largest parks of all 5 boroughs) which are all awesome places to go visit!
Funny, I drove to NYC my first time in April and had no problem finding a cheap parking garage at Quick Park E 36th street, was great. Everything was in walking distance and we went to the Hard Rock in Times Square for dinner and it was great and reasonably priced.
Talking about tips in NYC..If you see a service charge on your bill that is the tip..So don't leave one....And going to a bathroom...Go into any hotel lobby..They all have public bathrooms..Me I just walk in and look for one..Ask someone..They all have bathrooms..
Thats not true at all! What are you telling people bro?? Service charges are for using a credit card usually around 3%. A tip in new york is MINIMUM 18% if you can’t afford that dont come!!!!!!!
@@garrus_vakarian7188 Your wrong..Service charge has nothing to with the credcard..Service is the tip. I've seen it on my own bill..When i was paying with cash..
Best video I've watched! Thank u First time I'm coming to New york I just got my Hotel & flight this week & staying in Manhattan pretty expensive coz I don't know anything yet. Until I watched your video. I learned a lot about New York
As a NYer this is actually pretty good. I'd throw in all the sports teams / venues, shopping (5th Ave and Soho), comedy clubs, more restaurants, and drinking lounges you can go to. Also I'd put up cost on dollars for a lot of the activities. NYC can add up pretty quickly. E.g. $15 cab ride, $50 ticket to Broadway show, $50 per person for restaurant meal, $250 a night on hotel, etc. 1 day can easily cost you about $250 a day on just doing normal day of sights.
It’s humid af during the summer and it rained at the same time when I visited. It was a stressful vacation I’ll never go back but I’m glad I got to experience it.
Sabret hotdog carts are fine - idk man I like the food carts in my city, I go to them all the time if I’m in a rush since tourists don’t really anymore.
I was born & raised in NYC. I live in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico 🇵🇷, but hope to visit for a couple of weeks for about 10 - or 12 days... need ideas... thank you!! Love your videos so much!! You explain everything clearly... thank you so much!!
Thanks Dianne! I hope you have a great trip! Are you just visiting New York City.. or other places? Washington DC is just a few hours away from NYC by train.
I am from NYC, but plan to work in D.C. and live on the outskirts... is D.C. just as efficient as NYC is, as far as the people there ? I live in Hampton VA now, and do not like the flow here at all ...
Very accurate!!!! Manhattan is my second home. With me being military I get a great deal of perks including free entry into many places, $60 or so for a hotel, even a free Yankees game. So I luck out in that perspective. But one thing I disagree with is Katz’s. They’re good, don’t get me wrong, but the real deal NY deli, and better pastrami is at Sarge’s. I’d also recommend checking out “Classic Harbor Line” for a cruise on the Hudson. They have everything from small boats, sail boats, yachts, etc. They offer many types of cruises and sails.
@@YellowProductions You’re welcome. I am a huge traveler so I love your channel. I used to live a few hours from NYC and go there every chance I get. For something off the beaten path, check out Untermeyer Gardens and Croton Dam. You’ll have to take the metro north or drive, but it’s worth it. Especially eating at a place in Dobbs Ferry called “The Cookery”. Just google it lol.
Awesome video! I am from NYC and these tips are very accurate. I would add for the taking the bus part: there are buses that go across through Central Park, from the East to West, vice versa, for example the bus on 14th street, 86th street and 96th street, just to name a few. Have fun in the Big Apple!
You should do Mini-Advents and show how you got there, cost, food nearby, what happened, etc. Get a following to recreate your steps and bend them to include their own diversions, ie different food, coming from different places, taking different transportation, etc.
- If you're staying in Jersey, don't bust your butt getting to the city early. The commuter rush is mostly over by 9 on that end and any leftover "monthly-pass-only" parking spaces at NJ Transit stations open up to day tickets. I've had bad luck depending on the hotel shuttle and am within driving distance of the area so I have my car with me anyway. - That being said, don't bother driving in Manhattan. It's next-level stress and pricey as hell. There's a reason the locals stereotypically don't own cars. - The Times Square McDonald's *does* have free public restrooms, so it's useful for that.
Good video. Taking the 10 and 19 year olds to NYC in May. Staying at a Hyatt property in Flushing (on points and flying into LGA). Been to NYC many times and want to check out Queens some. Will take the 7 into Manhattan. Great tips in the video.
The subways DO run in both directions along some streets.. L train from 8th ave to Brooklyn along 14th street, for example; #7 train from Hudson Yards west across 42nd St to Flusing , Queens, for example; There are crosstown BUSES along major streets...14th st, 34th st, 42nd st, 57th st, 66th st west to the east side, 86 and 96th streets west to east and vice versa.. No problem.
Brooklyn in the house. You got that right. NYC ppl don't talk to strangers. Only the south does that. From living in NYC , there are many transportation to get you where you want to go. Not in the ATL. Times Square is beautiful and with the Broadway 🎭 shows are the best. You can have a blast in NYC. The High Rise apartment are 💰💰💰. Plan on spending 💰 on Hotel in Manhattan. Food 🥘 of very good 😊. Yes, pizza 🍕 is the best. Oh, the best place to get a frank is from Nathan. One ☝️ more thing to remember is not to act like a Tourist. You will get robbed. That part has not changed. 👏🏼👏🏼🍕🥘🍟🍰
I'm from Texas, going to visit New York City, and it's a lot to process lmao. The weather is what is probably going to be my biggest thing. I'm used to the burning hot 90 to 100 degree weather. I wanna see how long I'll last before I want to go home hahaha. This was very informative, thank you!
I used to live in queens and then stand island so am make sure to bring boots and some jackets believe me u will need it and when it summer at night bring a sweater and in morning make sure to wear something that make you not feel really hot but cold and I go in a car to visit and when I visit my friends in stand island I take the fairy .
The bathroom at Bryant Park I heard is really nice. There are plenty of bathrooms inside the Oculus at the World Trade Center which are very nice. These are free to use. Also, if you cross the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan the bathrooms at the Brooklyn Bridge Park welcome center are very nice; but yeah, best to use the bathroom before you go out anywhere in New York. 😉 Regarding the subway, yes, getting in the right entrance is very important. For example, the Chambers Street stop (where the World Trade Center is) has several entrances; so make sure you know what train you are on or you may end up somewhere on the east side when you want to be on the west side. There are also free tours of the city. If you want to get to Central Park, the closest is the 59th Street/Columbus Circle stop. It starts on 59th Street. I loved the High Line, I went there twice. Once in the spring and once in the summer. Beautiful with the flowers and trees bloomed. Juliana's in Dumbo next to Grimaldi's I heard has good pizza too. Great video. 😁
Thanks for the extra tips! Particularly on the bathrooms in the Oculus. You're right... I think those are some of the nicest public bathrooms in Manhattan
Juliana's Pizza is the original Grimaldi's...it's a restaurant, no slices. Visit any hotel to use the bathrooms...sign up at www.bigapplegreeter.org for free walking tours of the city...
Just sitting off on those steps in Times Square was an amazing experience. Then I had a huge rack of ribs in a stakehouse grill along one of the side streets. The best ribs I've had in my life.
Pretty good run down for the basic tourist... My one suggestion is the Frick Museum over the Met (doable within an hour and like visiting a rich uncle’s mansion who happens to be one of the greatest art collectors)
Thanks Chris for the tips. Just returned from business trip to NYC, your video was very useful. Specially getting Broadway show tickets with discount prices at the Times Square TKS booth and getting around in the subway.
thank you, thank you, thank you.. I'm about to visit New York and I am learning a lot with you... and you are fun, in the exactly proportion, at the exact moment. I'm enjoying your material.. TNX!
You forgot about the crosstown bus for east to west and Vice versa. The M79 has a lovely view of the Met as you go through Central Park. You don’t always have to walk. I’m a native NY’er.;-)

Actually try the flatiron hotel in the flatiron district. It’s a good hotel at least it doesn’t cost too much besides that entire area near Madison square park got a ton of work and the hotel too so i think it’s worth the try. I would also try the park at the end of Chinatown, it’s kinda fun and pretty much everyday old Chinese guys play old school Chinese instruments for fun, there’s always a bit of a crowd but hey it’s something fun.

Anyway, good video, he's actually got good advice!
Also: Atomic Bagel by Columbia University, go there in the morning when they're hot and fresh and DON"T toast them.
Thanks for the additional tips. I pinned your comment to the top!
Do you need to do a hand signals when changing directions like on a bicycle? :D
The Bronx is an amazing place to visit! With that being said, please do not attempt to gentrify it and its culture. Thank you.
Thanks for the tips!
Your videos have been absolutely wonderful and extremely helpful and have made our trip the best and hassle free. Thank you for posting
Thanks Lisa! I appreciate the kind words!
As a New Yorker, I approve of this video. Especially the tips about the Subway and the food. Please listen to him...
Thanks Bernadette! :)
Good tip on hotels for bathrooms!
Excellent advice about bathrooms. Just walk into any hotel and find one. Europeans usually don't do this in their country but here, no problem.
Jack Val Is home alone
Thats not true at all! What are you telling people bro?? Service charges are for using a credit card usually around 3%. A tip in new york is MINIMUM 18% if you can’t afford that dont come!!!!!!!
@@garrus_vakarian7188 Your wrong..Service charge has nothing to with the credcard..Service is the tip. I've seen it on my own bill..When i was paying with cash..
Best video I've watched! Thank u
First time I'm coming to New york
I just got my Hotel & flight this week & staying in Manhattan pretty expensive coz I don't know anything yet. Until I watched your video. I learned a lot about New York
Thanks Eva!
Wow, your channel is easily the best... I am amazed how well you explain things, thank you.
Thanks Diego!
This was cool I'm from the UK I watched this videos for ideas on what to do in New York thanks for the inspiration
Thanks Mr Tickle!
+jjh lk Thanks jjh lk!
Going next week for 5 days ,surprise birthday trip for my wife🇬🇧🇺🇸👍
Enjoy NYC!
It’s humid af during the summer and it rained at the same time when I visited. It was a stressful vacation I’ll never go back but I’m glad I got to experience it.
NYC is pretty rough in the summer!
Sabret hotdog carts are fine - idk man I like the food carts in my city, I go to them all the time if I’m in a rush since tourists don’t really anymore.
Thanks a lot ! We will discover NY for the first Time next summer !!! :)))))
Very informative. Wish u my New York guide. Love to visit
This is exactly the kind of video I was looking for planning my trip in New York! Thank you very much for all of your suggestions!
Thanks for the extra tips!
When visiting NYC must visit. 1. Statue of liberty 2. Esb 3. T.s. 4 all 5 boroughs 6. Top of rock
Love the amount of work and effort put into this video!
+DipStick 413 Thanks DipStick 413!
Awesome video! I am from NYC and these tips are very accurate.
I would add for the taking the bus part: there are buses that go across through Central Park, from the East to West, vice versa, for example the bus on 14th street, 86th street and 96th street, just to name a few. Have fun in the Big Apple!
Thanks for the bus tip Anggie!
Flying to NYC tomorrow, couldn't be more excited ! :D Thanks for your video, it was very helpful !
Awesome! Enjoy NYC!
Go to Brooklyn take the Q you'll have fun get off at Atlantic Ave
Julie, how was it? :) (i haven't been there yet...but one day i will:)
You should do Mini-Advents and show how you got there, cost, food nearby, what happened, etc. Get a following to recreate your steps and bend them to include their own diversions, ie different food, coming from different places, taking different transportation, etc.
Many recommendations! Thank you and thank you for listing these in the description
He starts so so but overall gives a great deal of info sincerity and good tips.
Thanks Jorge :)
Hilton Millennium in Wall Street area. Across from the WTC. Used to have great rates in the weekends.
Nice! Enjoy NYC Charlie!
Time Out New York Eatery in DUMBO (in Brooklyn) is great. So many places to eat all in one place!
Wow! What a great video! Super helpful! Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I think you saved me from making some mistakes!
No problem.
Can’t wait to go this summer 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Enjoy!!!
great video i live in long island drive to Manhattan every day ant he is on point with all those tips
Thanks Nicola!
Very informative and concise. Haven’t been, live uk, but a ‘must do’ for me. Time running out at 65, just retired.
Thanks Ron!
Very clear Chris! excellent stuff!
Thanks Falando!
Omg next week i go to New York omg thanks for ya information and nice video what can i feel there what is my first expectations omg im so happy.
Ha-ha, check out the Penn Station bathrooms. And don't forget the Port Authority Bus Terminal ones for more fun.
Sketchy bathrooms! Always fun! :)
Omg I just found your channel, thank u..you are very helpful cus I will be visiting New York ,thank you too for your clear English
Thanks Sri!
are you planning to visit nyc soon?
NYC Scooting yea why 😊
Yellow Productions u are welcome 🙏🏻
I'm from Texas, going to visit New York City, and it's a lot to process lmao. The weather is what is probably going to be my biggest thing. I'm used to the burning hot 90 to 100 degree weather. I wanna see how long I'll last before I want to go home hahaha. This was very informative, thank you!
Thanks Crystal!
Cant help not to see New York soon because of this video. I subscribed
Welcome to Yellow Productions!
I used to live in queens and then stand island so am make sure to bring boots and some jackets believe me u will need it and when it summer at night bring a sweater and in morning make sure to wear something that make you not feel really hot but cold and I go in a car to visit and when I visit my friends in stand island I take the fairy .
If you wanna going in winter make sure you had warm layers and rainproof shoe and the transportation in New York City is taxi bus and subway
Warm layers is key in winter.. it can be cool!
bleecker street pizza and joes pizza are great slice places!
New york here we come whoooop whoooop
Bus tour saved our feet! got tired of walking so jumped on and off and saw a lot
Thanks! My wife and I are coming to NYC from Scotland on Tuesday and this video helped tons! I’ll be sure to check out your other uploads. 👍🏻👍🏻
Virgil's BBQ...
steakhouse
most educational ny video on youtube. and this is comin from a new yorker!
Thanks raul cee!
hey it's April 2019 and the video still helped me.
Awesome Klaus!
great vlog for the big apple NY one of my favourite cities all the time
Thanks Na9er!
Pretty good run down for the basic tourist...
My one suggestion is the Frick Museum over the Met (doable within an hour and like visiting a rich uncle’s mansion who happens to be one of the greatest art collectors)
Thanks for the tip on the Frick Museum!
Thanks Chris for the tips. Just returned from business trip to NYC, your video was very useful. Specially getting Broadway show tickets with discount prices at the Times Square TKS booth and getting around in the subway.
Me and a friend of mine walked the whole of Central Park and then walked from 5th Street to 98th
Neato!
cool..i do that everyday.
Anonymous 1 what’s on these streets

Beverly Marsh how was it
You forgot about the crosstown bus for east to west and Vice versa. The M79 has a lovely view of the Met as you go through Central Park. You don’t always have to walk. I’m a native NY’er.;-)
Thanks for the tips I am sure it will be very helpful
Good video, very cool!

@@YellowProductions Great Job!!!
@@YellowProductions Have you done a Video on Seattle, WA yet?? And another one on Victoria and Vancouver BC Canada?? These three Locations are So Closed to each other You Can Cover a lOt of Ground with Just a few Days.
Thanks for the tips
I have the ambition to visit NY and east coast in general.Good video.
