As a Lancashire lass I absolutely love Butter Pies. You had to be at the pie shop early as they always sold out quickly. Thanks Geoff, I'll be making this pie a lot. Thanks for showing us how easy it is even for new bakers like me 🙂
There is an Asian takeaway in Blackburn called "Taj's K2" - it used to be a very ropey place back in the day (it since got a refurb) but they sold the most amazing butter pies. I have no idea who the supplier was, but they were the best I ever had. They still sell butter pies but don't know if its the same supplier as I haven't been in for some years.
This looks SO yummy!!! It's definitely NOT for those of us who are working hard at losing weight!! But the day I make it, I'm eating it with my eyes closed. Fat grams and calories don't count if you can't see what you're eating!! 😁🤣 Loved the video. Thanks for sharing it with us!! ❤️
HI Christine. Thanks very much. I seem to recall that combining potatoes with lots of butter and onion reduces the calorie count to almost zero, or maybe I I am mis-remembering.
Great easy recipe thanks mate. I'm a Lancashire lad and have always believed the birthplace of the butter pie to be Chorley. Back in the 80s I worked in the Preston/Chorley/Leyland area and discovered what I was told was the shop where the pie was original made and sold back in the 1890s. Whether this is true or not I wouldn't swear. Chorley is also famous for Chorley cakes or 'dead fy pie' as they are known locally. I live in the birthplace of another famous dead fly cake - the Eccles cake! Butter pie is my absolute favourite and I make a special trip every now and then to Chorley to get a couple. But, after seeing you make one and make it look so easy I'm definitely going to have a go.
Hi Speed Triple Rider. Thanks. I loved this pie and, as you say, it isn't difficult to make. I also enjoy Eccles and Chorley cakes. I have videos for both on those on the channel too. I hope you enjoy making the pie.
Great post Geoff i was drooling when you tasted your pie i will make an onion gravy with one of my own mild chillies looking forward to to morrows dinner stay safe ATB
Delicious going to make this with some mustard inside and Gruyère cheese and service with some boiled gammon and extra vegetables. Thank you for another great recipe, making me hungry. X
Thank you for sharing this lovely recipe. I believe my dad will love this when I make it for him, he's from Derbyshire and I'm always trying to find nice recipes from around his neck of the woods as much as possible.
Dear Geoff, I have made the Lancashire Butter pie and it came out very nicely and tasted really good. I have adopted you tip and added a little cheese (more than a little actually 😀 )which gave it a salty twist and more edge. Thank you and happy baking. Eli
Grammercy for the video. I'ld love to eat this delicious food that is made without meat. Thou are very appreciated for thy work today. Grammercy again.
Hi Geoff. Hope all's well with you? My mother used to make this but I never knew what it was called. Thanks for bringing back a memory 😃 There was a version I remember from school which involved cheese, mash and onion in shortcrust pastry. I still make this but add bacon as well. Thanks again. Graham
What an interesting recipe Geoff. I’ve never heard of Butter Pie, despite my English roots. I imagine the pie would fill you up when meat wasn’t permitted or consumed. Your plan to eat it along stir fried veggies is 👍👍
Hi Louise. I do hope you enjoy your pie. My immersion blender processor works very well. I gave my Kitchen Processor away once I started to use this one.
An excellent idea, to wrap the filling in the extra pastry by turning it onto the pie instead of leaving like a pork pie casing or trimmingit. I'll certainly be copying that with my pies from now on. Thanks for another brilliant tip. I agree that some shredded cheddar may improve it but most of these old recipes especially the pies were designed so that the family could give them to grans or their elderly people who were poor and unable to work. Not many know that when they introduced the old age state retirement fund it came with a proviso that the pensioners didn't live with their offsprings. The result was that they had to live alone in order to qualify. The national assistance for the elderly was about 10 bob or ten shillings.
Omg l would love this... Its a bit double carb for me but I'm sure it's lovely.cheese would be good to add .. Geoff hope you are, keeping well... 🥰🧅🥔🥮🧅🧀🥰
Hi Jfergs. I am somewhat older than that and hadn't heard of it either until quite recently. . But I did enjoy it. I hope you try it and and enjoy it too.
Does a crust with egg in it have a little more stretch than just a butter crust? I've been making meat pies with my butter crust and it crumbles too much. Or if you have another suggestion I'd appreciate it. Thank you so much
Hi Jacinda, the egg in the pastry makes it a little more tender. If the ratio of liquid to dry ingredients is right the pastry will roll well too, and be easy to press into shape. The problem with pastry can be the amount of water. The water will make the pastry harder, rather than tender when you eat it. Sometimes people add more water as the pastry seems to crack well rolled. But that will make the end result harder. Egg, instead of water, makes it easy to work with and gives a great end result.
Hi Bessie. Oh yes, this is very adaptable. I think I mentioned that in the video. In the written recipe on my blog I also said 'For the more modern palate the recipe can be easily adapted, perhaps using some grated parmesan to add that lovely umami flavour, enriching the pie immeasurably."

Hi Spiderbirdie. Now I am wondering about a chip and onion pie.

Geoff you are always out doing yourself. I know that it has to be Devine.
Hi Mary. Thanks very much. I did rather enjoy it.
Lovely. My sister used to make this with some grated chedder cheese over the potatoes, delicious.
Hi Der. That sounds like a good idea for the top.
Job well done Geoff, I particularly enjoy that you show us these traditional recipes from around the UK.
Hi Bloke About Town. I am glad you like them.

Dear Geoff,

Eli
Hi Eli. That's great. I am glad you enjoyed it and that adding some cheese worked out well too.
If it had Cheese in you didn't make a Lancashire Butter Pie.
However in Lancashire we do make Cheese and Onion pie, this also contains potato as a filler, but little to no Butter, as it would be too greasy.
Looks yum 😋..... definitely gonna try it for the first time 🌝
Hi Ayush Pandey. Thanks very much. I hope you enjoy it.
Omg this is amazing recipe🙏🏽🎈❤️
HI Maeflor Ogario. thanks.
Grammercy for the video. I'ld love to eat this delicious food that is made without meat. Thou are very appreciated for thy work today. Grammercy again.
It was a first for me. But I I enjoyed it.

Hi Graham. All is good here thanks. I am glad this brought back some memories for you. Bacon sounds like a good addition.
Thank you, Geoff, looks delicious. Would be Julia Child approved 😋👍I will make this for a family get together 👏
Hi QuiltingWithMeSew. Thanks very much. I do hope you enjoy it.
What an interesting recipe Geoff. I’ve never heard of Butter Pie, despite my English roots. I imagine the pie would fill you up when meat wasn’t permitted or consumed. Your plan to eat it along stir fried veggies is 👍👍
Hi Maureen. Yes this is certainly a filling pie. I am sure it was often used when money was short too, in some families as it keeps the stomach full.
I’ve always wanted to try this pie! I’m going to veganise (coz🌱) and try this week. I love that food processor, so simple! Thanks Geoff
Hi Louise. I do hope you enjoy your pie. My immersion blender processor works very well. I gave my Kitchen Processor away once I started to use this one.
@@geoffsbakingblog thanks for the reply! I’m very tempted to get a blender like yours, the big processor I have is a real faff!

Hi Jfergs. I am somewhat older than that and hadn't heard of it either until quite recently. . But I did enjoy it. I hope you try it and and enjoy it too.

Oh my this sounds absolutely delicious!! I have a bunch of curry. What do you think?
Hi Jacinda, why not? try it.
I like them on a bun.
That's nice.
Ohh, I want some sauteed mushrooms also please
HI Spiderbirdie. I see no reason why you shouldn't have some.

mashed potato pie... lad you need try an Haffners friday pie.
Hi Paul. If I was near Burnley I probably would.
Looks great Geoff, also so many spam bots in here :(
HI Bob. Thanks. I have, hopefully, removed all the spam.
That was interesting. Ignoring the frugal history of this I would have thought some Ham included would go well also.
HI James. Yes, for today's appetite I think a number of different additions would work well.
Traditional ones don't have onion in
Omfg 😋😋♥️😅
Low calorie then? 🤣 in all fairness- could you add cheese to this at all?
