    This is the most difficult sport to learn, I think. It took me about four years before I got a sense for where to be to catch a wave. Just on the shoulder. I’d angle my board just a touch then arch my back and hold for a beat as I caught the wave. It makes a huge difference to angle the board slightly in the direction you want to go. Then quickly pull your legs under yourself and stand in a slight crouch to get going. It’s like having just the right touch as you shoot a free throw or putt a golf ball. You get a feel for it over time. But once you stand up on the fastest part of the shoulder as you ride, it feels almost spiritual. You’re one with nature.

    So i tried this on my session today and it workd! When I remembere to look, trust my pop up and "lean" on the cobra pose, no rush or better, to the rithm of the wave. Sometimes i see of the wave is steep enough i can get away with angling by paddling at catching. When is less steep and less powerful i usually have more time and so the lean on the cobra pose gives that sense of "control" and a "pause", to look and remain calm looking at where i want to go and do. Thanks! Keep them coming!

    Could we get a video about catching waves on short boards? ( using the technique where you push your board inside the water)

  • @josesnowsneves5132
    @josesnowsneves5132 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Nice! I would just add one additional tip: to get a bit of extra speed, before the hidden step, paddle a bit with your feet ;) Notice that this is only possible in short boards :)

    Cobra pose is amazing. The surfer who made it popular among other surfers was Robert Weaver aka Wingnut.
    The “power” of it is that Cobra Pose not only allows you to take a glance or peek at what side is wave starting to break but helps you execute any pop up technique. It serves as a pre step to actually pop up.

    Thanks a lot! But at 2:13, when the surfer is paddling at 5 km/h at 45º, it is equivalent of paddling about 3,53km/h in the wave's direction, and not 2,5 km/h (do sin 45º equals adjacent side divided by hypotenuse to get the perpendicular component of the vector). Besides, I apreciate very much all your videos. Aloha

      @barefoot_surf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Vitor, we took a look at the maths and yes, you are correct! Thank you for clarifying the surfer's comparative speed. We've trimmed out that small section to avoid any confusion, and will adjust our future tutorials :) .

    Makes so much sense in theory. I recorded my pop up and no matter what I do it seems impossible to get my legs up in place without my hips going above my head for an instant. Is this a flexibility issue?

    I have a wave storm, been surfing for a couple months now.. I've gone the last 10-12 weekends in a row to places like North Zuma and Bolsa Chica. I've been skateboarding for almost 20 years and was even sponsored in high school (So I am a bit more equipped than the average beginner). I have finally been catching my first green waves and improving on my paddle form, but when the waves are above 4-5ft, and I try to catch them on my 8ft Wavestorm, I get absolutely smoked from nose diving or falling forward. People on reddit are saying it's because the waves are not peeling so I should go at more of an angle, but I have been anticipating for some time it might be because my board is just too long. However, most people telling me to not get a short board yet.... when I ride my 8ft.. let's say white water.. I can ride it all the way in and even switch stances from goofy to regular ( I skate a lot of switch) and feel myself wanting to turn.. But I don't have the $$$ to make a mistake a buy the wrong board... hoping for some advice here! all the best

      @boltup5566 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need this: th-cam.com/video/4GcoDRh2Ti0/w-d-xo.html
      Start catching the wave earlier. The wave storm can easily handle 4-5 ft. Maybe move up on the board and catch the wave earlier. Not when it's at stage C. Start paddling at the peak between A and B.

      @ryanallen6443 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Watch jamie O'brien surf pipeline on a 9ft board. Yours definitely isn't too big you either need to paddle harder or arch your back more.

    • @nicolerubin7368
      @nicolerubin7368 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find wavestorms great for learning to pop up in white waves but tough for green waves due to their shape. People who do catch larger waves on big boards do come at larger angles but I noticed it's easier to catch green waves on a real board even long boards. See if you can demo a board at your local shop.

    • @vrab.
      @vrab. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When the waves get bigger you need to set your rail faster. You can do this by catching the wave earlier then set rail, angle more when paddling so your rail sets while paddling, or go straight for a bottom turn to engage the rail.

    Why is the feet up in the scorpion position while hes paddling?

    • @vinz9741
      @vinz9741 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To get a better balance/control over the board/paddling. Steady legs makes easier compared to often, beginner having legs more open and moving sideways, which makes the board also move sideways and you lose speed and control.
