    I think your safety score is actually more of the vehicle’s safety score. It’s based more on the environment around the car.
    Tesla wants to ensure that the car that has the FSD is in a relatively safe environment. That’s why people cutting you off dings “your” safety score as they don’t want to put FSD into that environment until it’s ready.
    Per Quinn’s example, putting FSD in Kansas is much better than putting it in New York.

      Came here to say exactly this. It makes more sense how the "safety score" is structured when you think about it assessing not only the driver but also the environment around it.

    I will admit I saw this on Reddit, but I definitely agree with it. The safety score is not all about judging you as a driver. It is about an analysis of you AND your driving environment. Yes, you may HAVE to brake quickly when people cut you off, and you may get FCW if another driver does something dumb. But that is a reflection on your driving conditions, which can increase your accident chance especially if the car is driving itself. And that is what Tesla cares about. They don't want FSD released in difficult conditions first; they would rather have people driving down straight farm roads in Kansas start, then trickle down to more and more complex situations where collision chances are higher. That way they get to add more and more information as time goes on.

    • @michaelhodges7127
      @michaelhodges7127 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point. Perhaps they should have called it the “Autonomous driving complexity score” instead to encompass the drivers ability and attentiveness combined with the difficulty of the driving environment that they are typically using the car in.

    I honestly LOVE my Roborock S4 robot vaccum. I got it 2 years ago for $350 and it is the most perfect little robot. They have newer ones (more pricey) ones that do a decent job mobbing in addition to vaccuming and also have a pricey dock thay makes managing it even easier. It's super smart and has lots of features like no-go zones for areas that get the robot stuck like high carpets or separations in the floor and won't throw itself down stairs, lol.
    If you could just add a camera to that and the same security features described for the astro like checking on a noise before heading back to its dock, then I'd already be set. Don't need it to do anything else :P

    Instead of astro going into a compartment in your fridge to get a drink maybe Amazon or third parties could design a mini-fridge around astro that would allow it to get drinks without human intervention. That sounds like a more reasonable thing to me.

    • @samdcbu
      @samdcbu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A company should just build a microfridge with an electric drivetrain (that could roll over dividers) and huge battery that could drive itself over to your couch and sit their unplugged for hours keeping your drinks cool. And they could add support so that you can summon it using Alexa. This is one of the problems where I want the specialized robot to do it really well.

    • @kiister8126
      @kiister8126 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samdcbu well as much as I think this is not a bad ideia, the fridge wouldn’t be able to do all the other things that Astro (supposedly) does, like patrolling around at night or streaming live footage of your house to your phone when you’re out.
      So making a robot with potencial to have peripherals made for it in order to increase it’s functionality might be the way go with household bots.

    Safety score is not the judgment on the driver. It’s an assessment of car’s overall safety, driver is just one aspect of it. Your local area driving patterns, weather conditions, road conditions etc also contribute to how safe your car is. Tesla is concerned about the probability of accidents and safe driving is just one part of the equation.

      Well said !

    • @toptiertech7291
      @toptiertech7291 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No not really. It tells you what the 5 scoring factors. Its measuring how safe you drive. The speeds of your turn, hard breaking and stuff like that. Autopilot does not affect your score

    • @johnpoldo8817
      @johnpoldo8817 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@toptiertech7291 I think OP is saying there are factors outside the driver’s control that reduce the score and unfairly rate the driver. Some of these include a kid running into the street or deer darting out of woods which requires hard breaking. Another is getting cut-off on the highway triggering unsafe following. Surely, there are many more.

    • @mydutube
      @mydutube 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@toptiertech7291 Where did I say autopilot affects your score? Nowhere. My point is Tesla cares about probability of accidents for the car not the driver, because car insurance (or liability) follows the car, not the driver. Check the safety score web page on Tesla website. Second to last answer in the FAQ clearly mentions that the safety score follows the car not the driver. If you and your partner share a car, the score for the vehicle will be affected by both drivers proportionally. Tesla doesn't track or care about who is the driver.
      My point was counter to what Quinn and Marques said in the video. They kinda complained about how things like abrupt braking and cut ins can't be avoided but do affect the score. Thats precisely the idea. If your car is operated in environments where cut ins and close distance driving is common than those things have to be factored on the probability of accident of THE CAR.

    30:00 Welcome to the world of supervised fleet driving. Every mile is monitored for speed, handling, braking regardless of the conditions that surround that moment. I added a dash cam in the event these metrics are applied negatively towards me or in the case of a collision. My regular driving score floats between 96-98/100. My negative hits are usually speed but anyone that’s driven I-95 knows the speed limit is uh, more like guidelines.

    Three points:
    1) The reason why you had to slam on the breaks or follow too close doesn’t matter. You were in a position that was higher risk. The goal is to use the lowest risk people first. Whether it is based on location or driving style it doesn’t matter.
    2) It’s still beta and the fastest way to get past the beta to use the safest drivers first, not the loudest who paid first or the most.
    3) The cost of FSD wasn’t $10k in 2015. It was cheaper with less features and increased as more features have become accessible.

    • @blaccpanther8715
      @blaccpanther8715 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That third point...its so frustrating that people conveniently ignore that. People who bought FSD for $6000 for instance, are experiencing $4000 worth of added value for free. imagine owning something with $4000 worth of added value for free and thinking you have somehow been short-changed? lol and some people have the audacity to call it a scam.

    I agree with everything you guys said about the fact people paid for FSD years ago and might never have gotten it. It is definitely a "buyer beware" situation. I am not defending Tesla's decision. When I bought, I test drove the car with FSD and decided if it was worth it even if it never got any better. I also took into account that regulation here in Germany may stay stricter than in the US and I may never get the same level of autonomy.

    • @waynelewis9110
      @waynelewis9110 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      People paid for FSD, not FSD Beta. Once FSD actually comes out, they’ll have it. But they’ll have to wait to see if they can get the Beta which does not provide actual FSD.

    • @toptiertech7291
      @toptiertech7291 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      People paid 10k years ago for software that they didn't have the option to buy it later. All these Teslas are capable of doing the FSD so telling people they can't just wait until its fully ready to pay for it is a scam. Then it can't transfer vehicles so if someone totals your Tesla then you have to pay another 10k.

    • @AdrianHoppe
      @AdrianHoppe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there’s a lot of confusion here. As far as I remember, you did not buy FSD or FSD beta or whatever. You bought the „potential for full self driving“ and got some promises like „autonomous driving in city streets until the end of 2019“. As MKBHD always says, never buy hardware in the promise of future updates. Since I was satisfied with the capabilities of Auto Pilot in 2019 and thought that no other car company will sell me anything close to it, I opted to pay 6k € back then. Also, i never planned to sell the car after a couple of years but to drive it until it’s dead. In that case, 6k was OK for me. But paying 10k especially on a lease when you may never get what you paid for, is just really shitty. Nowadays I would just do the subscription during the months I travel a lot.

    The Safety Score is about both (A) how safe of a driver are you? and (B) how challenging is the environment in which you're driving? You can be a safe driver, but if you're navigating I-95 commute traffic into NYC each day, you'll never have a high safety score. If you live in a rural town with no intersections and straight roads with little traffic, it's super easy to have a high score. Tesla is covering their asses with this Safety Score, too.

    My teacher told me once on how to think about percentiles. If everybody is thinking the test is hard then it actually doesn't matter how much your score is, it only matters how many people are ahead of you. So literally, you can have a negative score and be in the top tier. So basically at the end of the day it's just a queue that you need to be in front line of. It's irrelevant as long as everyone is getting judged on same metrics.

    Thoughts on Astro:
    I agree as an able-bodied 20-something that Astro doesn't excite me. However, thinking outside my own box I could see Astro coming in handy for senior citizens. I imagine an older couple (probably doesn't have stairs in their home anyways), Grandpa plopped on the LA-Z-Boy, Grandma knitting in a different room.... I digress. I could see Astro having plenty to do in that household in regards to making their everyday life a little easier, bringing things to each other, reminding them to take their medicine at specific times everyday. Also would be great for video chatting with the grandkids, etc. The caveat here is that the "senior citizen" demographic probably isn't going to have the patience or tech-savvy to unbox and set up an Astro.
    So yes Astro is dumb for us youngins, but I think it has huge potential for positive impact with other groups of people.

    Calling the F150 a "smaller truck" is such an american thing to say 😅
    Here in Europe we consider the Ford Ranger as quite a big truck 🤣

    I will never for the life of me, understand why people complain about the FSD they bought not being feature complete....when the very selling point was that you get to lock in a cheaper price, by buying FSD before it is feature complete. People who bought FSD for $6000 are currently experiencing $4000 worth of added value for free yet yall think Tesla is somehow finessing or misleading the customer. Anyway, excellent show despite my one disagreement with yall at 24:00

    Tesla can absolutely be one of the most innovative and fascinating car companies In our entire history.
    And at the same time a bit of a joke xD
    Same goes for Elon.
    Personally, I'm happy for the entertainment.
    And if something good comes of it. Neat!

    I thought it was "toe - pray"
    Also Marques calling a Topre keyboard "membrane" just incurred the wrath of Topre lovers everywhere

    backwards seats and projector on the windshield is not optimistic when right now in Phoenix the passenger has no access to the wheel and no one is driving and waymo takes the entire liability.....if tesla takes the entire liability and u don't have to touch anything they can roll it out in some areas already

    They should be focusing more on the fact that Tesla is providing drivers with an excellent scorecard for safe driving that is only going to get much better.

    Just feel compelled to say: No, there is no universe, in NYC or Kansas or anywhere else, where going more than 50 mph and following less than 1 second behind the car in front of you is safe. Stopping distance is a thing, human reaction time is a thing, and no way do they add up to that ever being safe or good idea.
    (Sorry for sounding huffy - love MKBHD and the podcast and this is nothing personal, but I've known people who have died in a pileup, which easily could have been avoided with greater following distance.)

    Re Tesla
    One thing that perplexes me… if they think solar power is so nifty, why don’t they install solar panels and batteries at their suprtchargers?

    • @michaelhodges7127
      @michaelhodges7127 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because there is a ton more power requirements for superchargers than a typical household (charging on a v3 supercharger at max amps would be an equivalent power draw of a ~100 average houses). The solar farm would need to be massive, something generally not possible where superchargers are located.
      Also, I assume (but cannot confirm) that battery packs would be unable to consistently draw 250kw of power to many supercharger spots 24/7.

      Thx MICHAEL
      Certainly I understand that solar could not come close to allowing an off grid super charger
      But (assuming it could be connected). It would reduce the amount of power required from the grid…..which seems consistent with Tesla goals
      As far as the power connection itself…. I assume there would be some way to design the needed wiring …I mean, home users have power walls…. And also charge their car…. So I am guessing this issue is less complicated than fusion energy
      Thx again for your thoughts
