Xbox Elite Series 2 After 1 Year: Did Microsoft Fix The Durability Issues?

  • I've had the Elite Series 2 for just over a year and part of the reason why I didn't do a review back when I got it is that I wanted to see if Microsoft had fixed some of the durability issues that plagued the first one. In this video, I'll go over what changed, what Microsoft did to remedy some of the problems users reported and whether they were enough to make for a more solid controller.

I had mine for about 1.5 years so far and I still love it. I did have an issue with left bumper either double actuating or not at all. In addition the right trigger became sticky since the foam pad inside came loose creating an adhesive spot for the trigger. I exchanged through Microsoft directly and the controller has worked so far ever since. I still use the controller for many games on Steam and the back paddles works wonders for shifting gears in Forza Horizon 4!

Microsoft should just make a variant of their standard wireless controller with the back paddle built. Seriously, that should become the standard for all controllers. I bought a Power A wired controller just so I could get those paddles to supplement the thumbstick buttons, since they are so awkward to use. Unfortunately, that controller broke after just 3 weeks of active use and I had to return it for a refund.

    • @Sora-en8ib
      @Sora-en8ib 2 ปีที่แล้ว

i feel like they should make a back button attachment like sony did and the can use that port on the bottom next to the Auxiliary. So people can use the custom limited controllers they make or ones that people custom make in design labs. Also if the controller is having issues they can just buy a new controller or use a spare one they have and continue to use the back button attachment. Sadly they’re probably never gonna do that cause they want to focus sells on their elite and 3rd party controllers.

I have two series 1 elites. I’ve had the first one for about six years and the only issue I’ve had with it was after about three years the right bumper broke to where if I hold the controller with the bumpers facing down the outer end can pop out of the casing. That said it still works so I turned it into my PC controller since I play at a desk and can’t really hold the controller in a way that it will pop out. No other issues after six years, still works perfect.
I’ve had the second one for three years and have had zero issues with it. Still looks brand new.

As an owner of the xbox elite controller 1 I was quite surprised to hear about durability issues with it. I’ve had no issues with anything wearing out but Im prob not a heavy user like you. If anything what I really like about the controller is the truly premium feel it has of something that is well made, it sure doesnt feel like something thats gonna wear out and ive used it quite a bit but I dont know how you play games and what constitues ’heavy use’ but I would bet for any normal use of tve controller it will be perfectlt fine. For normal users, casusl play, and for peiple who just want a premium feel device, they will be more than happy with it. My only gripe with it was the lack of bluetooth which I stupidly took for granted and after having shelled out quite a high sum for it Ms shortly after released the xCloud beta which I got accepted to after having waited forever, only to then be informed that it would only work with the new type of gaming controllers that had bluetooth. Oh silly me for getting that. They have had wireless controllers forever and made a killing on the elite controller and just now realised they actually wanted to use bluetooth and it would be required for the new service. I was slightly bummed out about that. I still think though that ghe elite controller 1 is one of the finest most premium controllers one can own and will not wear out if youre a normal user. Ive tried both v1 and v2 and IMO the v2 is not a step up in terms of premium finnish and overall quality feel.

I had an elite 2 for something like 2 days, the A button didnt register half the time. I returned it to best buy because of that. Just bought myself a PowerA Fusion pro 2, its far better out of the box and I feel like its gonna last longer. Even the analogs on the elite 2 didnt feel right out of the box. I think Microsoft needs to focus on durability if they're going to charge 180 bucks. As it is, its definitely not worth it when you can get the PowerA fusion pro/pro2 for less than half the money that thing costs.
Edit** The powera controller is trash dont buy it. I Had 1 elite 2 i bought, the first one. The analog was broken out of the box, not even connected and forced to the side and just broke. Traded it in and got the one i mentioned before with the crap a button and returned it. Fast forward a year. I bought another from best buy, and bought the 60 dollar 2 year warranty for it. I used it for about 6 months for about 4-6 hour or so daily usually. And it was great. Put it in its case zipped up for 6 months, cause I started playing on pc.
Pulled it out not long ago. The LB button double clicks, i tried the paper trick and everything, and nothing works. So im going to have to use the 60 dollar warranty for 6 months use on a 180 dollar controller. I will NOT be buying another 60 dollar 2 year warranty with the one I get. Simply for the following reason. Since feb 28th, I have put about 1700 hours in Lost Ark on an Xbox one controller that cost me like 50 bucks. Thats double or more the hours I put on the elite 2.
So yeah, its great, when it works. But so far im 3 down, and none of them have been good. I would say stay far the f away from the elite 2. If you have to have paddles. Go with a razer, i hear they are far far more durable than scuf or elite controllers.

    •  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

i bought 3 different elite series 2 controllers all with different batch numbers, ALL of them had the A button not register half of the time, returned all of them. bought a SCUF controller instead and it has been working flawlessly for about a year so far.

I decided to treat myself to something fancy after my XBOne controller developed a stick drift after ~1.5-2 years of ~1-2h use a day. Bought the Elite v2 and it got in today - lo and behold, both the A and the Y button often don't register and on top of that it doesn't charge via the dock.
Absolutely unacceptable for such an expensive piece of hardware. I'm sending it back and giving it one more chance, if the next one I receive has issues aswell, I'll refund it and buy another controller.
Apart from those glaring issues I was also very negatively surprised to find out that the paddles can only be mapped to buttons that already exist on the controller officially which makes them useless imo. Thankfully I've found a 3rd party tool that lets you map them to keyboard keys aswell. Could still be an issue with games that don't support using gamepad + keyboard at the same time, but for Rocket League it works.

I don't see myself buying a series 2 controller anytime soon, I purchased the series 1 at launch and thoroughly enjoyed it for the first year or so but not long after I started having the grip pad problems that so many have had, I then started having problems with stick drift on both sticks and now the left stick sometimes doesn't respond to input until it's slammed hard to the up position, as you said for a "premium product" the durability leaves much to be desired and really put a bad taste in my mouth and makes me doubt the quality of their premium products.

Hmm, you mentioned that the "plug&play" batteries suck but I've been using that kind of battery for a few years now. Lasts for I dunno.. at least 10-20 hours minimum. It's difficult to tell since PC doesn't tell how much charge there is exactly. Maybe I have just been lucky.
My current controller works well and has for many years but I've just been researching whether it's worth buying the elite controller since the paddles would be nice for many games. The same two things came up everywhere: sticky A button and RB inconsistency. That's really bad since RB is used for attacking in dark souls and it's the game I play most on controller. I don't think I'm willing to gamble on the elite controller unless I find it heavily discounted somewhere.

After 2 years with an elite 2 i can say that stick drift is minimal and the battery is good as new even after thousands of hours of runtime, which is great, however, the paddle buttons and bumper buttons have extreme wear, i have to press hard down on the bottons to get them to activate, even when they click, nothing happens unless i forcefully press them down, this is disappointing since i had an elite 1 before this for over 4 years and never had this happen, i shouldnt have to buy a controller and worry about how many times i can press a button.
Note: if you remap the stick buttons to the paddles, this can reduce wear on the sticks and significantly reduce stick drift. :)

What I think might also be happening with this one is there's just a lot of components, a lot pf electronics that might break, or might be faulty, so the chances that something on your controller is going to fail is much higher. However, one thing that's inexcusable is the fact that Gulikit's electromagnetic sticks exist, and they're not using them yet. Everyone is still using these terrible analog sticks with potentiometers that mess up so easily...

Sorry, you must not really play that often or that competitively. We have three Elite S2's (nephew, wife, and myself). After all three were replaced once, we made a 100% conscious effort to baby the crap out of these "premium" controllers, which is an absurd necessity with this price tag. The right bumper on all three started double clicking frequently, the A buttons were barely receptive because they wobble too much, and the sticky pad behind the trigger moved and caused sticky trigger on two - all this after 6 months. They're engineered to fail under normal circumstances. Light gamers just don't count.

It'll be REAL funny when the controller of those who don't believe the material choice issues are real start to wear down. It might take 1 or 2 years - there's no set time for it to happen - but it will.

Getting my third Elite 2 under warranty. The first had severe stick drift, the second P1 didn't click like the other paddles. The Elite 1 just fell apart after 2 years. Still, a high quality controller is now an essential product for me, and I still like Microsoft's offering and am willing to endure this. I hope the huge losses they must be making won't deter them from making other hardware in the future.

It’s great when this problem doesn’t come about but it can’t make it a year without it happening. I got lucky when I got my first series 2, traded in my series 1 bc I had the year warranty, got my money back and all I had to pay was the year warranty for the series 2 at GameStop. Had to pay for another year warranty when I took my 1st one back and I’m glad I did but damn it’s kind of annoying that they can’t get the sticks right.

I finally splashed out and got one 3 days ago, brand new, and was faulty out of the box. Vibration was just manually going off like crazy even with no game loaded, just moving the controller/my hands and pressing nothing LOL. It was the right trigger vibration, was totally broken, and didn't respond with the software tool at all like the left trigger did, yet was going off on its own particularly when the trigger locks were closed.. I sent back to Amazon and so far the replacement seems OK. Still, for 250 Australian Dollars, you have to wonder about Microsoft quality control. That said, it's the most comfortable controller I have ever used in my life. I have large hands, not huge but large, and I have arthritis and RSI at age 50, and I can play for hours with this controller.. It's heavy yes but it's comfortable and your hands don't slip. I played for about 3 hours last night and really enjoyed it. If only it had a turbo button, as I still love my retro emulation and for the very old games my hands just aren't healthy enough to manually hit a fire button over and over for an hour anymore. If it had a turbo button I'd never need any other controller, but I got an SN30 Pro 2 for that exact purpose. Sadly, I find the Pro 2 quite uncomfortable to hold and use, especially the d-pad which causes my left hand a lot of pain. If anyone knows of a quality PC controller in the xbox style layout, with turbo, do let me know so I can try it out.

The rubber nubbins on the trigger stop switches have come off, and I have a stiff paddle button, (good thing I don't use them), I had a bumper and a trigger break, and the rubber grips on the sticks are severely worn down. I've gone through several elite v2 over a two year period that I honestly cannot say how many because I lost track. Ballpark figure would probably be about 15 and considering that I buy a warranty for everything they were an easy replace, that's of course if the store where they were purchased from has them in stock. I did just buy a razer wolverine v2 chroma and I am impressed at the responsiveness as well as the durability feeling. It just feels good and responds well. I did a comparison in elden ring's melee swing responsiveness and it felt at times using the elite 2 gamepad that the swing was delayed or felt like I had to button smash the lb/rb for it to work. The razer gamepad did not have this issue.

Two elite 2s under one year with heavy gaming (avg: 3h at least per day) both RB buttons broken. Another is not responding not even opening up the chase and trying the button itself. Second is "loosely" so it sometimes responses (quick fix to tape 2 layers of extra tape on that "fraction tape/plastic" which is between bumber and the key. Also second controller's left stick does not always return. Even stick is at middle in Xbox test stick shows that they are slowly returning back to center deadzone.
Games which played over years were Overwatch, Apex Legends, Assassin Creed series, Rocket league. Which all requires heavy clicking. At least AC series "rapes" the RB as light attack key binding. And left stick gets a lot of action in all games.
Even all of this is it is still the best controller ever done and when you don't have competition using more stronger components is useless. And because of muscle memory I cannot go back to normal.

There's an other point Microsoft should correct : making possible to assign any keyboard key to any button. It is possible as tier solutions do it (steam, antimicro, rewasd etc), it is very easy (for them) to do, it would just take an update of their setting app, it is highly convenient for users, and with such a price we should expect the best starting with what already exists.
But even if they did it, it would still be a poor choice as its durability is very problematic on many points. I have enjoyed basic xbox controllers for years, I just can't understand why a product 3 times cheaper is way more durable than this one. For some special features I get it, almost... for instance there's no vibration motor in triggers within the basic xbox gamepad, so it wont break like Elite motors do (except most of the time they stop working just because of one wire breaking just before solder point on the motor, witch could be fixed by making a better job on retaining wires from moving around). But for other stuffs like the A button getting squishy within some months, while it can last for years with the basic gamepad, it's just absurd.
On several issues like the A button, or analog sticks, they know how to make it right, so it's a choice to not make this one as good. Trying to understand why do they not want to make their top end model at least as durable as their basic one is very confusing, especially after years of massive complaints. Why would most users want to buy several times such an expensive device after having troubles since their first one ? I know planned obsolescence is a profitable thing for companies, but the more expensive a product is the more it should be durable anyway. In a lot of cases the obsolescence of the Elite is so fast that it gets bad before guaranty ends...

I must be really lucky since my play and charge kits are still going strong for over 6 years now.

Bought a usb c play and charge kit for my series x controller in January, it already doesn’t charge and doesn’t work (September 2021) won’t be making that mistake again.

@Sean My experience exactly. It's funny cause the comments can go either way. If I say "The controller works great, no issues", I'll get 100 comments calling me out " Wow, you're so stupid! I've had all of these issues so your review is a lie!". If I say "This thing here doesn't work", I'll get another 100 comments like "Don't know what the hell you're talking about. Mine works flawlessly, so you probably just don't take good care of it".

I've used enough of these since the 360 era to know the quality on these is spotty.

Mine still works since day 1 2013. Haven't had any problems with it

If you're buying a Series 2, get the one with the "new" box art and check the "Lot Number": 2122.
It seems they made some quiet improvements.

Do you know what improvements they made? Genuinely curious.

@@jidenshaotoko I tested 4 of them. None had drift out of the box, triggers are more responsive (faster), stock tension is tighter compared to what I experienced when they first released.

What exactly is the new box art?

I prefer to the smaller paddles of the second controller. I actually had an issue from the first controller where the top paddle layed over the one below it and I couldn't use them any more. The new one doesn't seem to do that so far. I do have one concern. I just purchased mine today and the rubber panel on the grip detached while I was playing. I snapped it back in, and it seems to be fine... but this is literally day 1 for me...

My second controller is holding up much better than my day one controller, I take good care of my stuff but for some reason my left stick bottomed out on my first one :(
