  • Java fern plant care consists of giving this plant a 6000K light, nutrients in the water column, and attaching it to some driftwood. The Java fern is one of the easiest aquarium plants to keep in the hobby. What makes it so popular is that it’s a man so little lighting that a lot of people do well with this plant. It is known as a rhizome plant and does it need to be planted in your aquarium. It entirely gets all of its nutrients from the water column.

    The Java fern plant is super popular amongst beginners because of how easy it is to keep. Taking care of it is extremely easy. This is a perfect aquarium plant for a smaller nano aquarium. It is not extremely picky on what kind of lighting it has and is super adaptable and almost any type of aquarium.

    There are multiple different variants of the Java fern and they’re all kept in the same way. Even though the different types have different leaf variations, taking care of the Java fern is the same for all of them. This is a perfect plant to keep with smaller fish like betta fish or guppy fish.

    I wouldn’t say Java fern is exclusively a beginner thing. What I like about it, it’s simple enough that you can maintain a healthy amount of plant life while focusing on a fish aquarium. It can work with any substrate you can think of and really don’t need to think much about once you get it into the tank. Once you start getting into the more advanced plants, you start building tanks around the plants. You start spending money on lights, substrates, root tabs and fertilizer, maybe even CO2. Your livestock starts to become secondary to your underwater garden/greenhouse.
    Bottom line, if you want a fish tank but want to ditch the plastic junk and replace it with the benefits of live plants, simple things like Java ferns are for you.

    I added Java fern (a lot of regular, some windelov) a couple weeks ago and added some more like 4 days ago. All of the Java windelov is turning brown with the “babies” coming off and floating around, and some of the regular has leaves starting to curl on the ends. And no, the rhizomes are not buried under the gravel

    Question The java ferns that they sell on coconut hides at petco, do they do well? And another question the java moss balls that they sell there with a java fern growing out of them, will the plant do well growing inside that moss ball

    Where should you buy java fern? I bought some from petco not long ago, but it was multiple plants tied together and i worried it would cause nutrient deficiencies so i took them apart

    I do beg to differ with my personal experience, I started with one fern, and now have 6, I've planted them all and there is actually a 7th baby starting on the largest mother I have, they're thriving, though I am now going to do some experimenting with floating and wood

    So I read that anytime you want to put a new plant into your tank you have to clean it first in bleach water. Is that really necessary?

    My Java fern and anubias are attached to stones and driftwood and sit on the substrate. It appears to me that once the roots make it into the substrate the plant growth accelerates.

      @@PalmerAquatics I glued mine on lava rocks
      & they are growing pretty good, nice & green
      but so far haven't seen no new leaves yet &
      it's been like 6 mons, so I'm wondering if I
      should have put the them on driftwood ?

    New to aquatic plants. Question..I glued a Java fern to a rock. Will the rhizome grow long enuf to propagate it into another plant eventually?

    • @Toucccan
      @Toucccan ปีที่แล้ว

      generally speaking they will actually start roots on the leaves, unlike Anubis they rarely have new rhizomes growing, but if there's a decent bioload it should grow pretty fast! just don't get rid of the weird spider web looking things !

    Thank you for this video! I'm a total plant noob, (the only ones I haven't killed are silk), but I just got my first java fern last week as an xmas present to my gourami. Fingers crossed this one will make it!, especially as I've now just gone and dug it out of the substrate.
    Super quick question though- on one of the leaves, I noticed a strange spider like growth on one of the leaves when I got it home from the store, almost like it was growing roots from a green bump on the leaf? Any idea what this is? Is it harmful plant cancer, or something else? Apologies for asking , I'm not just 100% how to google this. And again, thank you for the video!

    • @Harrison2
      @Harrison2 ปีที่แล้ว

      its quite normal.. its actually a new baby java fern. This happens frequently depending on the health of your plant.

    • @Toucccan
      @Toucccan ปีที่แล้ว

      leave it until the leaf is about a half to full inch, it may rip the leaves pulling it off but they will be a ok! you'll have babies soon!

    Great vids bro, could you please explain why they are so popular for betta tanks, just started a nano tank with a betta

    • @Toucccan
      @Toucccan ปีที่แล้ว

      I've got them in all of my Betta tanks, they are great and often found in big pet stores with Bettas due to how fast they reproduce, it's not too too hard to have babies if the bioload is fairly large, I started with one in one tank and in 3 months I've got 6 and a baby baby working towards 7, Bettas love them as they hide in them and like to swim through them, and I love them for rescue rehabilitation tanks
