I know this video is nearly ancient; but, I love the large planted tank, behind you. The one that looks like a garden, with an overhead trellis. Just beautiful!
Thank you so much for such clear, comprehensive information! You are my go to for all things aquarium. I enjoy your laid back, easy going, endearing personality. KEEP THOSE VIDEOS COMING!! :-)
My leaves seem to always just turn black really, still have a lot of green leaves and new growth but some of the older, larger leaves are mostly black and it’s not due to new plants propagating. What’s going on with it? I fertilise and have decent lighting
Thanks jacob. I was worried about my plants getting damaged and I didn't know what was going on if my plant was melting or what. I've got roots coming with the new leafs.
Also, if your going to try leaving it long enough to latch onto the substrate - you have to bury the roots, but leave the rhizomes above the soil-surface - like planting german iris.
Thanks for the insight I have tons of new babies on leaves & I am trying to build my plants a little at a time work in progress. I am using flourish products without co2. Some advise on which chemicals to use in helping give nutrients to them please. Also have amazon swords & anibus plants in the tank. Thanks
Thanks for the info! If one of the leaves comes off but still has juveniles on it and the base of the stem looks dead and dried up should you cut it at the stem so leaf will stay alive and float untill the young can be propagate?
I wasn't sure about those black spots either, so thank you for clarifying that. Thanks for sharing such a great video with us, its always such a pleasure to see you🐠🍃🐡I love your tanks, they're so pretty filled with life and color. I'm excited to start growing these and I appreciate all the great information you've shared!
Contrary to what you said, it seems like they turn lighter with *more* light. Like they are ditching clorophil...? Idk But if you are sure about the light I will add a grow bulb..I wish I could get my greens to darken 😢
Very informative and helpful video delivered in a very watchable and modern format unlike many fish channels which often use over exaggeration, shakey camera quality and grunge rock backing music. Got yourself a new sub :)
I bought a java fern my first plant some reason the leaves are turning tan and fading any ad advice I have flourish advance CO2 Booster on hand please help
Would java fern do well with albino bristlenose plecos? I'm still researching what would be best for my tank, and looking into plants that can be attached to the wood and coconut shells I currently have in my tank.
Hey Jacob. Ever dealt with Java Fern melt? Not much info about it is seen in the internet but a few hobbyists have been facing this problem. The leaves progressively turn into brown from the rhizome until the the whole leaf is semi-transparent brown and dead.
Thx for the video, but theres a so called java fern disease, where the java ferns gets black from nothing. Do you know what it does to make them to turn into black and rottening? Some kind of lack of nutrients? Too much light? Warm season?
Omg I've used the website so many times as a resource and only just stumbled across these videos and just now put 2 + 2 together and realized this is him!!! I'm irrationally excited about this, lol.
Thank god for this channel. I will certainly be subscribing. One thing missing from this video is how to prune! Maybe one of your subscribers can help. I'm new to planted aquariums and I have a java fern and some of the leaves just turned orange and started to decompose. The whole leaf. I cut it off at the stem. Is that the right way to prune it? Ps I found this video because I was wondering why the hell there were smaller leaves growing off the big leaves. That's pretty cool. I haven't seen many plants that do that.
Makeup Mobster always attach fern to rocks or wood I do it with a small rubber band to keep it attached then the roots will attach..trim off old dark rotting leaves..trimming it back of that will spur better growth.also add some flourish seachem fert.
Makeup Mobster Hey there, sounds like you have low potassium and low iron in your tank. Try adding some by getting Seachem Flourish and dose your tank based on how many plants you have. If you have a lot of plants, dose every couple days. If you don't have many plants then dose once a week. Hope that helps you. If you have any other questions then feel free to checkout my channel and my videos on tanks. You can post any questions you have there and I can answer them in a video. Good luck!
I have a 40litre tank with six Minnows and two Amano Shrimp. I had Java moss but I had to remove it due to its growth on the tank walls. I was wondering if java fern can work with the fish I have.
Contrary to my java fern.. I bought it as a large piece.. Then it slowly died.. Maybe because it has been grown immersed.. Lost all the big leaves and left with small new leaves.. Can it be grown faster? Im a bit impatient lol.
I bought some online the other day and all the leaves were in singles with small bits of rhizome and I was wondering if I should plant them in a group or I could spread them around and they'd grow into their own large bunches of leaves?
I have 15 or so red wag platies in my heavily planted 25g. In that tank I have rotala rotundifolia, microsword, chainsword, dwarf baby tears, pogostemon helferi, staurogyne repens, vallisneria, aponogenton, water wisteria, and compacta swords and my red wag platies don't mess up my plants at all.
I read that when you first set up a planted aquarium its a good idea to drain the tank and let the roots grow with a low water line to stop the plant from floating, is this a good idea?
I was wondering Jacob, would it be correct to say that having Anubias and Java Fern in the fish tank on drift wood/rocks would greatly reduce the Nitrates as compared to just having plants rooted in the substrate? Thank you for your time.
+Watch it i believe the best plants that remove nitrates from the aquarium at an above average rate would be floating plants that are able to use the c02 above water. duckweed, frogbit, water wister/sprite, anacharis, hornwort, etc.
John Kastanos you could propagate it if you want more of these plants it ain't compulsory though if you just let those baby plants stay on the leaves of the adult plant, you'll get a nice bushy plant hope I answered ya:)
DMAN D No not duckweed. Just a bunch of plants. This week was plant inspection, so I uproot all my plants, inspect them for quality, toss out any dead ones or diagnose any problem plants. As usual this week was an A+ no issues. Thanks for watching :)
:I've been watching your vids a while and well, to me you are one of the best. I love your calm... and your information. You are the bomb, sir. Thank you.
I have the Fluval edge and I currently have Amazon swords, but their leaves seem really big for this tank. Will Java fern work better? Or do you have a better suggestion that I can use as a BG/Mid plant. I like the sword type.
Hi, I realize this is an old video. But can you please let us know something about the tank behind you in this video. What's that plant on the top, has it been glued or is it floating. Thanks in advance jacob.....
I have an issue where the leaves turn translucent brown the must fall of the rhizome, which remains firm and not rotting. do you know what could possibly be wrong?

looking back all the years vid still cool
Thank you so much for such clear, comprehensive information! You are my go to for all things aquarium. I enjoy your laid back, easy going, endearing personality. KEEP THOSE VIDEOS COMING!! :-)
Stacy Medina yes he's not loud and obnoxious like that other guys channel!!
Thank you so much nice video
How on earth then am I killing the poor thing? I just keeps loosing leaves and no new ones are coming back. It's just hanging on.
MysShadowdragon same here
MysShadowdragon either lights too bright or not enough nutrients
MysShadowdragon do you have it attached to rocks or wood..java hates it's roots shoved in gravel
@@kevinbrislawn5918 was just about to say that. I've had mine in the gravel and it wasnt doing great. Everyone was telling me to uproot it.
Same mine too! It's almost browning... Maybe my light isnt bright enough or I need plant nutrients?
My leaves seem to always just turn black really, still have a lot of green leaves and new growth but some of the older, larger leaves are mostly black and it’s not due to new plants propagating. What’s going on with it? I fertilise and have decent lighting
These vids are great! always great to go back to and see I've like it about 5 year ago ahaha
Nice vid. Java fern is one my favorites. Especially when there is a bunch growing like a bush.
what if i have hard water? will it die?
How about adding “trimming & maintenance” commentary?
Can you plant have fern in substrate?
No attach it to wood or stone
Thank you, Jacob. Your presentation was excellent, that is, cogent, informative, enthusiastic!
My uncle loves Java ferns he had a lot in his old planted aqurim
Thanks jacob. I was worried about my plants getting damaged and I didn't know what was going on if my plant was melting or what. I've got roots coming with the new leafs.
How long does it take to grow? Great video, I'm going to purchase some plants from you.
Do i need to tie it on Driftwood or can i directly dig it on the substrate?
Tie it on a pebble or driftwood the roots are not supposed to be buried cos they'll die.
Also, if your going to try leaving it long enough to latch onto the substrate - you have to bury the roots, but leave the rhizomes above the soil-surface - like planting german iris.
Do I need to -or should I prune the leaves somehow? they have reached the top of my tank and sort of float at the top.
Thanks for the plant guide Jacob
her209 Thanks for watching my friend :)
Thanks for the insight I have tons of new babies on leaves & I am trying to build my plants a little at a time work in progress. I am using flourish products without co2. Do you sell needle leaf java fern not narrow leaf java fern?
Thanks for the info! If one of the leaves comes off but still has juveniles on it and the base of the stem looks dead and dried up should you cut it at the stem so leaf will stay alive and float untill the young can be propagate?
Great video. I'm a beginner and the end of your video is why I got Java Fern in the first place. Learned a lot from watching this.
I wasn't sure about those black spots either, so thank you for clarifying that. Thanks for sharing such a great video with us, its always such a pleasure to see you🐠🍃🐡I love your tanks, they're so pretty filled with life and color. Good information. Thanks.
Other than anubius and java farn what are the other plants can go with African cichlid.
Contrary to what you said, it seems like they turn lighter with *more* light. Like they are ditching clorophil...? Idk
But if you are sure about the light I will add a grow bulb..I wish I could get my greens to darken 😢
Btw your javas look great. Great job

My Java been is growing baby's but on the brown leaves I'm not entirely sure what to do with it
I bought a java fern my first plant some reason the leaves are turning tan and fading any ad advice I have flourish advance CO2 Booster on hand please help
just ordered some! =)
hey Jacob, thanks for all the tips. keep making videos.
Great detailed video. Is it best to attach a single Java fern rhizome to something or can you tie multiple rhizomes together and then attach it?
I'm glad I found your channel! Awesome guides man. :)
Is it compatible with red ear sliders?
Thank you to do this kind of plant education... pls do more
How do you feed java fern if it’s glued to a rock?
Can we grow nucifera lotus plant in planted aquarium.. I am trying out any way..!!
I have 5 silver dollars and they love eating plants, is java fern going to be ok with them?
Jose Mari Militante prob not
Jose Mari Militante java ferns are really bulletproof plants and do fine even with heavy plant eating fish like goldfish so I think you're good to go
do you put it in with the dirt? also is there any way to trim?
What happens when it is grown under high light?
Also a good plant for brackish tanks. I have mine in 1.010SG.
My favourite with java moss
should you leave the risome exposed or bury it.
am i supposed to leave the roots of my java tied up witha rubber band when i put it in the tank?
I have tiny tetras and we're getting ferns tonight! As well as Java Moss
i know this video is old but thank you so much for this! i got some java fern for the first time and really found this video extremely helpful.
I'm going to order from you soon..glad your not the loud type like some video channels are doing it gets old.thanks!
Awesome! Thank you :)
how fast will java fern grow. After a week, how much growth will you see, 4+ inches?
Java Fern is a pretty slow grower, I would say, to see four inches of rhizome growth, it would take about four to six weeks. Thanks for watching! :)
Would java fern do well with albino bristlenose plecos? I'm still researching what would be best for my tank, and looking into plants that can be attached to the wood and coconut shells I currently have in my tank.
perfect. answered all my q's. cheers, sir.
Nice work Man!
How long can you leave it in the slotted pot that you buy it in?
Is it good for guppies?
Thanks Jacob, love your videos.
what soil do you have under your substrate?
Hey Jacob. Ever dealt with Java Fern melt? Not much info about it is seen in the internet but a few hobbyists have been facing this problem.
The leaves progressively turn into brown from the rhizome until the the whole leaf is semi-transparent brown and dead.
Since my tank is regular gravel, i use root tabs and my java fern is growing like crazy
Thx for the video, but theres a so called java fern disease, where the java ferns gets black from nothing. Do you know what it does to make them to turn into black and rottening? Some kind of lack of nutrients? Too much light? Warm season?

Awesome videos man. I like how you stay on topic. Other channels I feel they get too excited and they are all over the place.

What's the fastest growing aquatic plant
Any plant grown with co2 lol. Thanks for watching.
Do you ship to Canada?
I have 15 or so red wag platies in my heavily planted 25g. In that tank I have rotala rotundifolia, microsword, chainsword, dwarf baby tears, pogostemon helferi, staurogyne repens, vallisneria, aponogenton, water wisteria, and compacta swords and my red wag platies don't mess up my plants at all.
So these cant go in substrate at all? Does the rhizome get nutrients from the water column only?
Meg Ryan no they can't go in substrate as that would cause the roots to rot just place em on substrate without burying or tie em to driftwood or rock
Can you grow java ferns in a high tech tank with high light?
I read that when you first set up a planted aquarium its a good idea to drain the tank and let the roots grow with a low water line to stop the plant from floating, is this a good idea?
Do you need an air stone or air source to make sure it survives? Want to add to my betta tank which I do frequent 50% water changes
Learned a lot. Thanks
I was wondering Jacob, would it be correct to say that having Anubias and Java Fern in the fish tank on drift wood/rocks would greatly reduce the Nitrates as compared to just having plants rooted in the substrate? Thank you for your time.

Is Java fern safe for red ear slider turtle?

I've got soo many long baby java ferns on the mother plant but didn't know what to do with them. They are brown though???
Hi Jacob .. can Java fern that has been grown underwater be regrown out of the water ? If so how
I have the Fluval edge and I currently have Amazon swords, but their leaves seem really big for this tank. Will Java fern work better? Or do you have a better suggestion that I can use as a BG/Mid plant. I like the sword type.
I thought you couldn't plant it in the substrate .
Do you sell drift wood as well?! (Big fan :)
Manuel Velazquez Hi Manuel. At this time we don't offer driftwood on the website. Sorry about that, thanks for watching my videos my friend :)
Can I pan java fern in a 10 Gal tank? Thank you
Hi, I realize this is an old video. But can you please let us know something about the tank behind you in this video. What's that plant on the top, has it been glued or is it floating. Thanks in advance jacob.....
Sorry jacob, just saw the reply you had given to another member regarding the same.
I have an issue where the leaves turn translucent brown the must fall of the rhizome, which remains firm and not rotting. do you know what could possibly be wrong?
Yukino I take mine out and trim out the old leaves on my java plant put it back and growth is phenomenal
Mines done the exact same .. did yours survive?
Thanks for the info. What temperature range do you think will do best with the java fern? Thank you.
I have a low tech aquarium and my java fern is turning brown. What could it be ?
