  • I drove our Ford F-150 Lightning from Myrtle Beach to Columbia, South Carolina for a work conference a decided to use the trip as a range test.

    The extra weight will only have a small effect if traveling at a constant speed on relatively flat ground (slightly more if doing lots of accelerating - slowing down). I'm very impressed you actually got 277 miles traveling at 83 MPH. 65-70 MPH would definitely boost the mileage.

    • @gregscott989
      @gregscott989 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah...basic aerodynamics. Air resistance increases with the square of the speed. So the drag at 80 mph is not twice what it is at 40 mph but 4 times. In practical terms, somewhere around 42 mph is the optimum for mileage and getting there in a reasonable time.
      Rolling resistance and air resistance are fairly equal contributors to drag up to about that speed but after that the air drag is way more of a contributor.

      Exactly...I am quite impressed with what he got. Absolutely, going 80mph will crush range.

    Our 2022 Lightning Lariat extended range has averaged 2.7 mile/kWh since new. we get about 360 miles on a charge. On the highway we keep it between 65-70. I have calculated that even though we are going slower, we actually have less travel time because we don't have to stop to charge as often.

  • @Mike-sf7qj
    @Mike-sf7qj ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Your actual range was right on par with what I expected/hoping. I ordered a Lightning. Hoping to get 230 miles comfortably on a single charge at highway speed. Your video demonstrated this can be done. I was glad to find an example with additional passengers and luggage in the truck. Thank you for showing a real world example.

    Driving at 80 mph in any vehicle uses 15% more energy than driving at 70 mph which consumes 10% more than if you drive 60 mph. In fact speeding consumes over 15 billion gallons of gas in this country every year.

    80mph and 280 miles is really good! 320 is based on your history as you noted, but it’s not “all” the slow speed, it is highly dependent that you have zero regen on the interstate. Earlier tests all seemed to put the Lightning around 270 interstate miles, I’d be happy with 280+.

    Part of your range loss is due to the speed you were traveling. Energy usage is significantly higher at 70mph compared to 60mph, let alone 80mph

    • @exploringthegrandstrand
      @exploringthegrandstrand  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I get that but this was still more loss than I anticipated.

    • @pstoneking3418
      @pstoneking3418 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@exploringthegrandstrand Speed is significant. And as you mentioned, your normal driving also was a factor in your vehicle calculations. Next road trip go to charging and reset driving history. That way the trucks computer will not use previous driving history in its range calculation.
      However I too have noticed significant miles to empty when I first start any trips, regardless of the length of the trip. I suppose that could be because, I seldom precondition my vehicle.

    • @pstoneking3418
      @pstoneking3418 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Even though ford says several of their software updates were to improve the miles to empty calculations, I believe ford needs to continue to work on that. However most my normal driving is at 59 mph, when I do drive 74 mph on the interstate, I see a significant drop in my miles to empty. Likewise, when I'm just driving around town in stop & go traffic I see that miles to empty increase. Try resetting your driving history located on the charging screen & precondition your vehicle prior to starting your next road trip, to see if the guess o meter improves or not.

      My family are regular visitors to the MB area, but I watch this channel mostly for the Ford F 150 EV. Chris is correct. The F 150 is a large, heavy and boxy vehicle; the coefficient of drag is about 0.44, which is not good. Driving at 70 mph would result in a significant range increase. One thing I have on my mind, and if you can clarify please do, is where on I-95 the speed limit is 80 mph. BTW, the sign along the side of the road that says "95" indicates the name of the interstate highway; it is not the speed limit. Extra points for identifying the Led Zep reference, lol.

      @@exploringthegrandstrand you actually can get exactly the displayed range of you would have gone even less than 65mph. Just gotta play the game in these situations. I’ve gotten More than 330 when doing an average of 50mph. Take it easy on the speed when planning longer trips and avoiding extra charging.

    You got a Heavy foot my friend.
    Keep @65mph and lock it continuously.
    You will do bad even with gas vehicle at those speeds.
    Do 120 mph and you probably won’t reach 100 mile range, so it will not be the truck’s fault is always the person driving.
    I can easily do full 240+ miles @62 mph on my standard range Pro.
    Only Aptera won’t be affected by high speeds but these trucks are bricks.
    I can’t keep my speed steady so I cruise control all the time.

    So 225 miles from 100% charged to when def needs to be re-charged for an hour plus driving as any other gas vehicle person on the highway does 🤔 and to reach 240-260 have to drop to 65 miles/hr. I think I’m not ready for that EV range anxiety yet. That truck is $85k right now, maybe not worth the headache. For half that money paid for my ecoboost V6 in gas will do same trip at 26mpg on hwy for same money he spent charging adding home ($17 dollars roughly @ $0.13/kw) and DC fast home and $22 roughly @$0.41/kw) plus anxiety is gone.

  • @brita654
    @brita654 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Its not difficult. The government has been pushing 55 mph for 40 years because of Highway inefficient gas mileage. I have noticed when I get off the highway in my lightning that 40 miles turns into 5 0 m i range but the computer does not reflect that increase you have to have faith that it is true which it is. And on the highway I have to expect 20 to 30% decrease in the computers expected range depending on my lead foot

    running your climate control in Auto will use the heater even when you don't need heat. Almost certain thats where your extra losses are. I do not use Auto climate control anymore since noticing this issue in my lightning lariat.

    Might have been able to do the whole trip if you travelled at 60mph. The difference in range from 60 to 80mph can be 20-25%.

    It’s easier if you go by percentage or can you do that with Ford? For example Tesla I know I need 27% of my battery to get to the airport and back. Each percentage is around 4 to 5 km so there is a bit of a buffer for each percentage. To get to work in the summer, I need 7% battery, in the winter I need 11% when it’s really cold.

      Most Highways you need to be moving between 5 to 10 over speed limit so avoid inhibiting the flow of traffic. Will any of the EV mfg's use 2 gears like porsche as it seems to improve highway range greatly. Cruising at 80MPH at max highway efficiency would be a great goal for the future as well as 5% to 85% DCFC under 15 minutes
