When we constantly sweat the small stuff it has implications on our happiness, the quality of our relationships and, if we aren’t careful, it can even impact the outcome of really important decisions... like choosing where to invest our money or deciding if you should take that job in a new city. Let’s talk about decision fatigue and how it might be ruining your life.

Decision fatigue is clearly an important factor in this collective mental breakdown that we're experiencing. But, in my opinion, the biggest factor is the overstimulation of our brains, not just decision, but all the incredibly irrelevant information that we're subjected at all times. It's interesting to see this overstimulation in an era that thinks so little.

    Noting to myself
    1. Reduce the amount of decisions
Ex: reduce to-do list from 20 to 10, say no to all irrelevant projects, social gatherings.
    2. Automate processes
Ex: be like Matt, wear the same shirt
/don't waste your time on choosing outfit./
    3. Make most important decisions first thing in the morning
Note to myself: let's decide on the issues of my life that need to be fixed rather than pondering whether it is appropriate to like the post of my schoolmates(with whom I lost contact 7 years ago.

I’m a single mother of a disabled child, run my own household, and am a small business owner of a few businesses. Because I have to make so many decisions throughout the day that can definitely impact others, I eliminate some of my daily minor decisions. Such as: I eat the same exact thing for breakfast, I take my coffee the same exact way (black), I have the same three things to pick from at work to eat for lunch, I utilize smart devices set on a specific schedule for lights/charging/cleaning, and I often wear what looks like the same exact thing everyday (mostly fitted black monochrome clothing.) Not needing to waste time and energy thinking about minor things like these gives me more energy to focus on other more important things. It’s also very important for me to take a quick 5-7 minute break in playing a dorky Snapchat Bitmoji game to break up the monotony and give myself a laugh-which helps me refocus on tasks at hand. Sometimes, I secretly do a bunch of quick jumping jacks in the bathroom to burn up some physical energy. It’s important to energize yourself with natural-good feelings and laughter every once in awhile. 😂😊

If removing clothing choices seems daunting to you, start off small. I've started leaving clean socks and t-shirts out for myself in advance of certain days, so I'm out and clothed easier. Obviously if you have some big, corporate event you should be putting more effort into it, but for normal days? You know yourself better than anyone else and what clothes will work for you productively.

Noticed this as well. The more options we have, the less satisfied we are if we let the choices paralyze us. We need to practice more awareness in our decisions - for they shape how we will live short term and long term.
The challenge is, we don't know how to be satisfied deeply anymore, or we've been programmed to want it all.

The more our cognitive energy drains over time - like matt explains - the more dificult it actually gets to stop us from making impulsive descisions.

That hit me differently. A week ago I noticed that I was taking (no exagerattion) 1-2 HOURS to choose what outfit I would wear in a day.
I always took so long choosing that at the end I was so exhausted that I didnt even wanna leave the house anymore LOL.
Now what I started doing is putting the first outfit I think of and EVEN if I dont really like it I just go do other things, like brushing my teeth, putting contact lenses, doing my hair, etc. And then when I look back at the mirror I end up realising that I actually like the outfit I'm wearing, or at least I dont give it that much thought: "Ah, its ok. It doesnt really matter". This has been helping me a lot .

This video reminds me of Buridan's Donkey.
The donkey is faced with two different bales of hay. The bale's are identical, but the donkey can't decide which one to choose. The Donkey eventually starves to death.
This is how most people live their life, they either can't choose, or when they do choose they spend all their time thinking about the other bale.
Trust you've made the right choice and keep going, you got this 💙

I have obsessive compulsive disorder and it's even worse. Because banal decisions for me become a matter of life or death. If I have to choose between two completely identical objects, it takes time to understand which of the two is a threat to my health or that of my loved ones. It is a matter of hunch. It's completely exhausting.

I've found that with unavoidable decisions building momentum can also be helpful - like not allowing decisions to sit there for ages and build up but instead dealing with them head on when they emerge, then maintaining that momentum as you tackle more throughout the week/month. I make goofy videos about life and the universe and that's one of the topics I've covered - I'd love for you guys to check them out and let me know what you think if you get the chance! 🌟

I have adrenal fatigue, and for a while now, ever since I got my Llewellyn calendar, I dress according to the colour of the day. On each day of the month, there is a colour written down. It's there to inspire. So before I open my drawer to figure out which top to wear, I look on the calendar, it narrows down the options and choices. I had not consciously thought of it in this way, it just became easier and faster to choose what to wear and helps with my routine which already drains me enough as it is.

This tracks so well with why so many of us have been experiencing more decision fatigue during the pandemic -- all of a sudden we have 100 more decisions to make about once-automated parts of our lives. If going to the grocery store (or home for the holidays) requires half our daily decision making power, of COURSE we feel exhausted halfway through the day. My TLDW: cut yourself a break.

I work in crowd control and emergency management where 10k people can pass through in a 2 hour block. There are many questions (from the high volume of people asking questions but also your follow up questions to determine the best path for them) and decisions in routing that person to solve their immediate issue (many additional variables can determine what you decide your answer for them will be) that must be decided, that by the end of the day, many of my team mates do have decision fatigue. When I am looking at my personal to-do list, things suddenly become too difficult and start adding up to unfinished decisions.
