  • On the 16th and 17th March 2024, Statfold Barn Railway would host their first event of the year, their Spectacle of Steam. This event marked my third trip to the line, my last being in 2022 for the Indian Steam up. A lot has changed over that period and was interested to see the new changes, such as colour signals, a new 12¼ inch gauge Railway, the DHR 19B now being a resident rather than a visitor, I could go on...
Statfold has always been an impressive place in my eyes, 70+ locomotives in one venue, many of which are unique in some sense, be it the first garratt or first electric to last hunslet build and cane engines, the variety amazes me. The SBR also astound me in their capabilities to bring these locomotives back to life, many of these came to the railway as rusting hulks, a tree in the frames for one, and yet somehow managed to become operational again in months!
My personal favourite from this gala has the Davenport Ryam Sugar No. 1, such a loud bark even when light, I can see why it's a favourite for many! Another one, or shall I say two, we're the two Quarry Hunslets, one being an original, the other being a new build by Statfold themselves! They put on a great performance throughout the day! Fiji is one I find impressive, a red tender locomotive, such an imposing beast when up close, amazing whistle too. Of course, you can't talk about SBR without mentioning the Goose, a in house representation of the American railbus concept, fit with a loud American horn to boot, amazing thing that is!
The Mease Valley Light Railway is a great addition to the collection, with a nice long stretch of line, glad to see a nice long line in 12¼ for a change, was nice to see a fellow Exmoor engine too. Another gauge to add to the list of many at SBR.
Hope you enjoy the video and I'll see you in the next one!

Nice, but not much in the way of steam engines working hard.
