1971 Chrysler New Yorker First Start, Drive, Wash, Trip! Off the road for 30 years will it make it??

  • I purchased this 1971 Chrysler New Yorker from a local auto repair shop in Williams, California. I actually had seen the car for sale but the person wouldn't reply to my messages. Sometime later it was spotted at the repair shop. It hasn't been driven since the 1990s. The shop did various work to the car for a customer who then refused to pay. They ended up doing a lien sale on the car and that is how I came to own it.
    This video shows the firsts of everything. First start, drive, wash, fuel up, trip, etc. I get the car driving as I needed to assess the condition. I had entertained the thought of driving it back home 3000 miles at a later date. Since this car wasn't in the system, I had to get the car inspected by the DMV. Which meant I needed to drive it there or haul it there. See how it all unfolds!

    I love that , I had a 71 new port that I loved but I was hit head on and it was totaled when I got out of the hospital I went to the tow yard to see it and wanted to cry. It never gave me any trouble.

    I was thinking "that car is kinda squatted down", then I saw the torqueflite in the trunk! Always chuckle at these, they have brocade upholstery that would look right at home in your great aunt's parlour, but are motivated by a rumbliing evil sounding big block. Keep doing the right thing by giving these great cars a second shot at life.

    Please do not use 87 octane fuel. To avoid pinging it's better to use 91 octane or higher in all classic cars. The noise you hear in the carburator is probably the fuel boiling. (Caused by heat and the ethanol in today's fuel) The fanshroud (which is in the trunk) should be put back on the radiator, this will help with the cooling. On cars with A/C you need a 16 psi radiator cap I believe. Personally I would never drive a car without an air cleaner, especcially not with all that dust around. With the overheating and the missing air cleaner there may been already some damage done to the engine, let's hope not. The transmission may have a leaking 'shift-shaft' seal. It's located on the driver side in front, just above the pan rail underneath a shift lever.

      @@MrZdvy Oh it definitely was fuel boiling. Went with the cheapest gas which wasn’t too cheap with prices out here at $5/gallon or more. Transmission fluid It’s definitely spewing out of the bellhousing so most likely that front seal. And yes having an air cleaner is important but none available locally and no time to wait on one as I was leaving the next day. And this needed to be done. I’m not investing a ton of money into a car until I have the title in hand.

    Thanks for the video on your Chrysler buy I used to have one with a 400 V8. A Fury and really a nice driver,destroyed by rust. I would get another one if I had your mechanical know how. The cars you buy are all nicer than my old Fury. We should your road trip in the 62 Fury to my father in law. World War II vet and former Plymouth owner b 1921

    This was so much fun to watch. I have a 67 New Yorker which is in really great shape. It's neat to see the strong similarities between the 67 and 71. Got to love that 440! Great video thanks guys

    My time with C bodies goes way back and I used them a dailies a bit when they were just used cars. So, I made a lot of comments. I don't mean to be back seating you. I have a Newport cvt project car I need to get started on after letting it sit many years. I got some inspiration from your video and watched the whole thing. Don't get angry at guys that criticized some things you did. I think they did it out of love for the car, not malice. And you don't get a lot of love for C body 4 doors, so take it as a positive.

      @@auteurfiddler8706 There’s always “experts” that want to share their “knowledge” of things. The whole point of this video was I had one evening and part of the next morning to get this car driving and to an inspection station before I left the state. All I had to use was essentially a pocket knife and a partial can of starting fluid. I’m also 2800 miles from my home, tools, parts, etc. SURE things are easier in the luxury of your nice shop. But I’d like to see those guys do this in the 112 degree hot weather with nothing but what they have on them. End of the day I accomplished what I needed to do and this car can now live on.

    That's the thing about the Cali cars the body is always good but the interior always has sun damage if left parked in one spot for a long time and the driver side headrest has a corner of it just baked from the sun but it's still a cool old C body and love the 4 door hardtop the New Yorkers and Newports came in. My grandfather loved his New Yorkers and New Ports that is all he ever owned up until you could not own them anymore then he went to the FWD New Yorkers and to the Dynasty

    That's a keeper, 440 v8 adds value. No vinyl roof means no roof rot, great find !!!! My parents had a 69 T&C 9 pas wagon, 383. Needs some love and attention.

    11:38 Big "RV2" AC compressor is shown at the front of the engine. By 1971, AC was very common, almost universal in high end cars sold in CA.
    14:32 You do have a smog control vacuum advance. When used with the factory AVS , it either retards timing at idle or advances it when not at idle, or some such thing. There should be a solenoid on the passenger side of the carb, but I don't see it here. That helps shut down the car when you turn off the key. The lean timing would otherwise make it diesel.
    You will be fine with this distributor if you just set the timing.
    You are going to need a threaded rod on the carb to install the air cleaner.
    25:50 When you said the transmission isn't doing much, I remembered earlier when you first put it in gear it moved forward in a way that suggested you are short of trans fluid. You want to check that with the car on and the trans in neutral.

    Lots of people giving advice, I know, but I drive early 60s Lincolns and you absolutely need to use ethanol free 91 octane. Also, looks like the fan clutch may be just freewheeling which would help explain it running hot unless you are at road speed.

    The old man had a 1971 Chrysler Newport, Metallic gold green on the bottom and dark green roof (not vinyl) 2 door, 383 2bbl, roll up windows, no A/C. Wrecked it in 1973 so then we got a 1973 Satellite, Sebring, 318 white with a red half vinyl top at the front, (not that halo POS). I later bought that car from him with 32000 miles on it and kept it until I bought my 1979 Lil Red Express Truck.

      These light colors were very intelligently chosen for the baking hot sun of California's interior. I can't imagine better choices.

    I'll never understand why you wouldn't check for fuel before you do anything? Just winding that battery out for no reason whatsoever and using that starting fluid that disappears by the time you get to the key

      @@johnkendrick7304 It doesn’t disappear by the time you get to the key when you have someone at the key. I grabbed what was in the trunk of my car and used it. No parts stores were open for any fuel line or auxiliary tanks or whatever other ideas one might have and this car needed to be drivable for the next morning. The tank had good fuel in it and needed to pump back to the engine. And then it ran but had a host of issues with the carb and timing and such had to be addressed during it all and then I drove the car where it needed to go. Perfect? No… but the car started with a pocket knife and an almost empty can of starting fluid. Also… when I don’t use starting fluid the rest of the flammables crowd complains that I didn’t. To each their own!

    28:50 I think I would have gone with the 91 octane. 1971 440's still had close to 10:1 compression ratio.
    35:59 That ammeter should be moving to the right as you rev it up. it is either disconnected or (more likely) you are not charging.
    Back when Mopars had true ammeters, reading the movements, no matter how subtle., was very important.
    Speaking of gauges, most Chrysler of that era (not the other car lines) had a blue lamp for engine cold next to the red lamp for engine hot. Typically the blue light just came on for about 30 seconds after you start the car and the red light never came on in normal driving.

    It’s got spark, it’s got compression, and every time you spray ether into the carb, it’s momentarily starting/running briefly on the spray.
    There’s a fuel supply problem mate. She’s not getting enough fuel for some reason.

    35:30 Well, you can get a pretty good guess what year engine , or the block at least, by looking at the pad near the driver side cylinder head. If it has "G440" on it, that indicates 1971 engine. "H440", "J440" would be 72, 73 etc.

    Hang on to those original blue plates. It is considered quite desirable to be able to use these original plates on the the car they were originally issued to. But the DMV tries to refuse to let you use them so they can sell you expensive custom plates. You need paperwork with the original plate numbers on it. Preferably a title.

      Having the original license plate frame is also good and they are almost as collectable as the blue plates.

    DMV was just being asinine. The VIN contains the model year, the smog sticker states the model year and, as you said, the production date sticker is on the door jamb.

      The distributor might be clocked wrong, There wasn't any initial timing setting that it was happy to start, even with the carb full. In addition the charging/starting system has some weaknesses and limits the engine cranking speed a bit.

    Oh, I would not drive around with that trans in the trunk. I did that once and it damaged the rear leaf springs in just a couple of days of driving. And C body leaf springs are long and very delicate and impossible to replace with ones as good as the original ones.

    Man this is hard to watch you guys get that poor car going it's cranking over hard from the ether and spark knocking like crazy those are all the things you don't want to do to a engine that has been sitting. how about getting a jerry can and getting 5 or 10 bucks worth of fuel and pour some fuel in the tank and keep some to fill the float bowl on the carb to get the engine going instead of cranking it over all day using ether. obviously it's not getting gas because if it would of it would be running. so it's out of fuel or the fuel pump is NFG

      It was cringe inducing to hear that ping while starting. However distributor was initially set way off and loose, the charging/starting system has some weak points that limit the cranking speed. The distributor likely has some issues itself that need to be ironed out. It persisted on and off with the hard starting even with it full of gas.

    Thats hard to watch man,first off the fan clutch is bad that's one reason it's overheating,needs about 7 to 10 degrees of initial advance,power steering needs fluid ,trans like you probably needs fluid.and you really need to pour some fuel in carburator before cranking when a vehicle been sitting so long.
    Top off engine oil,sometimes they tick when they are low.Nice find keep it coming. We need to save this peace of American history .

    gotta love that spark knocking from using ether. it would be better to use fuel to get the car to run then ether that stuff is no good on a engine unless it's low on compression

      It was persistent on doing that on and off regardless of the distributor setting and even long after ether was last used on it.

    I always liked Chrysler products but not these fuselage cars
    A Co worker had a 69 Newport sedan and the interior was so Cheep looking and the doors closed with a hollow rattle
    My dad had a ,67 Plymouth valiant signet and it was so much nicer
    The headrest looks like they are burned

    Yikes, sorry but that was hard to watch.
    Give it a couple of pumps while you’re cranking after you fill the float bowl of the carburetor before you even start cranking!
    Also ether should not be your go to! Lord that spark knock hurt me to my core.
    Speaking from a certified mechanics point of view and saying it as advice, fill the float bowl up first don’t do what you did in this video to your cars.
    I get it you’re young and still learning so I don’t mean any offense. I’m grateful you’re saving these pieces of history

      @@CoastalAutoReactionCAR Now you can do anything you’d like when you’re in the comfort of your own nice big shop with anything at your disposal or have a parts house next door to get anything you want.
      Now try being 3000 miles from home in the 110+ degree heat with only what’s in your toolbag and no parts houses close by or open and getting a car to inspection so you can get a title for it as you have to be present in person for inspection and submitting paperwork to the DMV.. All before you leave for home 3000 miles away the next day in a 1966 model car. How many 50+ year old cars have you driven 3000+ miles across the country?
      Now I’ve resurrected hundreds of cars and driven these cars thousands of miles. Across the country and everywhere else. They don’t sit in the garage and go to the ice cream shop one time a year on a trailer.
      Now everything isn’t readily apparent in the video but many things were done and not recorded just due to time constraints and trying to get it done quickly. Other people complained that I drove the car without power steering fluid or trans fluid or any other things their expert eye noticed because they didn’t watch the entire video or assumed things. Which I get it… if you didn’t see it… did it happen? But this isn’t my first rodeo.
      Also, this car was extensively “worked on” by “certified mechanics” at a “professional” auto repair shop prior to my ownership so that doesn’t mean anything to me. (No offense.) All their work seems to have just caused more problems. The timing was way off but still seemed to not be consistent…Distributor issues perhaps… in fact they didn’t even tighten it down. The carburetor was supposedly rebuilt by a “professional shop” but obviously not well. Accelerator pump wasn’t doing much at all so having full bowls doesn’t really matter…. Hence the use of starting fluid to help. The front pump seal on the trans is not sealing anything even though the receipts from the “certified mechanic” shows they replaced it. Guess they didn’t know what they were doing eh? The alternator did not charge. The fan clutch probably isn’t doing well. Among many other things.
      You don’t know how many cars I’ve bought and fixed or fixed for other people that “professional”/“certified” mechanics or shops worked on and screwed up or made worse. So titles again… don’t mean anything to me.
      But guess what? Using a few tools and items in my toolbag that I had with me. I drove the car to inspection and back… the next town over in a 53 year old car that needs quite a bit of work. Mission accomplished! Then I hopped in my recently purchased 58 year old car and drove it the 3000 miles home the next day.
      Long story short. Sometimes you have to work with what you have. (Now the starting fluid was more tongue in cheek because people complained that I didn’t use it in other videos so I made sure to really use it this time.) But when you’re on the side of the road with a broken down car in the middle of nowhere… you have to figure it out with very little resources. The difference is… I can make it home with ingenuity and the bare minimums. I don’t have an unlimited budget, sponsors and a crew. I challenge anyone to go out and try it on their own. With a bag of whatever they brought with them. When I’m at home I got auxiliary fuel tanks, extra carbs, new distributors, hoses, fluids, tools and whatever else one needs. It’s not the same situation as this.
      Next time I’m using carb cleaner as starting fluid and anger the other “mechanics” and then I’ll use gas and anger the rest. Because no matter what you do… you have someone who knows better or knows more and they are gonna let you know about it.

      @@ObsoleteAutomotive not sure if you realize who you’re talking to I’m the guy that drove a 71 Dodge from the furthest point you can get in Canada on the West Coast to Quebec, then to Pennsylvania and back I know all about side of the road repairs I have been in your exact situation lol don’t get so offended. Take it as advice from somebody with 30 years of experience that’s all and yes, I’ve actually done that exact situation in 118° heat in Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania just outside the Chrysler nationals if I had time to go get ether, then I had time to get some gas and fill the float bowl up with a little homemade bottle or something also my friend it took a long time to get a big shop and half the time I’m not in it. I quite enjoy everything you’re doing and am grateful that you save the classic iron! Seriously not everything is an insult sometimes it’s constructive criticism, my friend that’s all.       @@CoastalAutoReactionCAR I’m not familiar with you, your travels, work or anything honestly…. I don’t watch TH-cam myself.
      If I was at home I’d have plenty at my disposal. I don’t even run a car on its gas tank until I’ve dropped it and checked it here at my house. But when not at home… You are forced to make sacrifices in order to just get stuff done and complete the journey. I literally just had to solder the top tank of my radiator in a parking lot in New Hampshire after it blew. Using a MAPP torch and solder off the shelf doing it as best as one can… not in a controlled environment and not to any book. Will people criticize it? I’m sure of it. This is after 4000 miles of traveling in this 1966 Chrysler. But after the repair… I finished my last 1000 miles and got back home the other day without being stuck or having to tow the car or whatever. Not to mention having my family with me.
      Again.. I didn’t go get the starting fluid. It was in my toolbag as I said. Just used what I had right there and got it done. There were no parts stores to get anything from and no time to wait. I used the can of spare gas as well as the starting fluid because that’s all I had on me and the only option.
      I got 20 some years of experience working on, maintaining and driving cars. I’m not new to this. Been daily driving nothing but classic cars since I got my license. Been all over the country in them and to this day I’ve always made it home. Though someday I’ll probably truly get stuck due to something unfixable.
      Not everything can be perfect or by the book. Sometimes there just isn’t enough time or the right equipment. So you can either give up or make it work. I try to make it work.
      Trust me… I know how to fill the bowl on a carburetor. This isn’t rocket science. When I first tried to start the car it fired. The car had been running not too long before. I thought it was going to be a simple get the fuel pumped to the carb and everything would be cherry. But…. the accelerator pump not wanting to work combined with the timing issues associated with the distributor and the host of other issues due to the “mechanics” who worked on the car prior to me… It made this a little more complicated. I had to undo/fix things previous people had done. And not everything gets recorded as I don’t have a film crew with me either!
      I had one evening to work on the car and a temporary registration that would be expired by the time I’d be able to come back meaning I couldn’t drive the car. The next morning it had to be at the inspection station. Which then turned into a fiasco you’d see if you did watch it all. The car had to make it to the inspection and if it blew up afterwards it didn’t matter. I needed the title situation to get sorted or the car would be absolutely worthless. Now the car is titled and registered.
      Anyhow, thanks for commenting and thanks for the advice but really not needed in this case.

    I agree, check timing . Pull the plugs. Put some Barium in it. Do a tune up?? Fuel filter. Got nautious, when the Chrysler trans. was thrown into gear. Without, checking, trans fluid. Cool New Yorker!! Not a cool video. 😢😅

    I really wish you'd taken time to check oil, power steering pump could heat it screaming, check trans level instead of near cooking it. You don't continuously rev an engine that has sat for an extended time. If that wasn't enough your pushing accelerator pedal to the floor not knowing trans condition or engine. I'm surprised at your behavior and disrespect for old cars, especially Mopars. I know you have a few more of them, thats why I'm surprised. It's a mateer of respect for the vehicles. Shame on you.

      @@kimkramer5773 Did you watch the entire video? All the fluids were topped off. The trans is leaking fluid like it’s going out of style. I HAD to get this car to the inspection station and I didn’t have a truck or trailer. Shame on me for saving this car from being crushed and spending the time, effort and money to get it titled so it can live.
