Literally just happened to me... when the chip wouldn't read cause I was inserting it wrong. Cashier looked at me and I said, "Yeah, I'll just pay with cash"

I received a pre-paid debit card from a ( class action lawsuit ) I had never used one before. Although I did know how to activate it. I went to swipe it and it wouldn't go through until the clerk told me to hit the " green button".. That tiny green arrow was the only thing green the rest of the button wasn't and the glare from the windows made it difficult I'm in my late 50's I had never used that kind of card. This stuff is changing so fast I can't keep up very well. I've never "paid at the pump" either. I take the store reward card and the cash inside to give to clerk.

I went to walmart the other day and I've like never used my card before and the self-checkout just REFUSED to read my card using all of the 3 options so I had to be escorted to the service desk with my items and I didnt know if I'd scanned wrong or something or if it was the machine but EITHER WAY that was humiliating!
Oh that sounds embarrassing but I bet it was the machine, not your card!

Debit cards can definitely be handy! I'm working on a new video about best debit cards for teens under 18, but Capital One Money is a great place to start.

If you tap your debit card instead of inserting it, do you still have to enter you pin?
Tapping or inserting doesn't change whether it asks for your pin. Most machines, you can bypass the pin by pressing "credit". If you aren't sure how to skip the pin, ask a cashier (they are all a little different).
Does swiping not work for debit cards
Correct. If a debit card has a chip in it, if you try to swipe, it will give you a message that says you must insert it. It CAN be swiped but most places won't allow it because the insert or tap is more secure.

@@purtol9686 it's the same for credit cards. They all CAN swipe but most stores won't allow it because it's less secure - if they have the chip, they need to be inserted or tapped.

Yes, the process is the same. The only difference is most credit cards don't have a pin at all.
Do you know how much you can use without your card being declined
If it's a debit card, you can generally spend up to the amount in your bank account (unless you have some kind of overdraft protection).

I’m living in a country that uses QR codes to scan in paying for almost everything. Soon I’m moving to a country that doesn’t use QR codes for payment method so I’m not so used of using cards and I don’t want to embarrass myself. Glad I actually researched it I was laughing at myself but when I saw the comments I’m so glad I’m not the only one.

Do you mean at a CVS register? I don't think Capital One can do that. Several of the apps do that (like Cash App, etc) but Capital One is more of a traditional bank.
@@SmartFamilyMoney yes at the register. On my capital one app it pops up saying that I can make cash deposits at any cvs store just show them the barcode and give them the money. I don’t have any capital one branches near me, so I was wondering if it’s true.
