In my opinion, one of the most amazing parts of Splatoon's movement system is how it also ebbs and flows with the dynamic of area control. I mean, it is _the_ core element of all shooter games, but the way in which the game's central movement system is literally forged around it is just so incredible. Not to mention the ink itself simply being an excellent way of telegraphing of a team's level of area control too... man I could go on about this game's design for hours lmao

Honestly much of it is ideas on top of ideas and then the puzzle pieces actually fall in place, or can be made to fit together naturally, so you get a mechanically great and unique shooter. But still I think something like splatoon with visual area control would have been eventually made even if splatoon wasn't made

Like most shooter games, Splatoon plays like a strategy game, such as chess. The only difference is its visual presentation in various ways and its marketabilit that help it to stand out.

There's something else, the theme. It so fully commits to sea life doing post human things, the weapons starting at super soaker then going out to art supplies etc, the pseudo conlang of squid speak, and all the music (and band lore). We rag on nintendo for not doing good meta stuff and connection issues but they have put a lot of heart into this series.
It's why I think the square enix foam thing is going to fall flat but that remains to be seen.

I absolutely agree, the gameplay itself isn't the main thing that got me to start playing, but instead all the other things they've done with it (music, art, lore, etc.)
Not only that, its ability to retain such an amazing community of music creators, artists, and story writers is what makes me really like the game besides the gameplay

The whole concept of utilizing map control not only for regaining and holding advantage but enabling the players more movability is the key factor. The fact that Splatoon nails that, and offers expanded lore and community is the reason why the series continues to cultivate.

I’ve always thought Splatoon was the epitome of “Easy to learn, hard to master,” and that’s what’s given this game it’s uniqueness and infinite replay ability
Splatoon is truly a game you have to play for a while before you begin to understand and appreciate the ingenious complexity within it’s simplicity
Splatoon is not for everyone. But once you begin to understand how the mechanics of this beautiful game seamlessly overlap with each other to provide impeccably fluid gameplay, it is truly something any shooter player, any video game player can appreciate

I wish people who haven't played Splatoon watched videos like this highlighting the best parts of the gameplay. Nintendo hasn't done a great job in the west with Splatoon's marketing and so many people truly still think that you only paint the ground in this game and it has no deeper mechanics. It's a shame because I'm sure a lot of people would have fun with it if they saw its true potential.

Splatoon also has that sort of "nintendo magic" where it more memorable because it deviates from conventional things you would see from games within that genre. Movement is one of them and honestly it hard to find a shooter game that you can describe as having the best movement around the time splatoon 1 was released.

Thank you so much for making such a thoughtful tribute to my favorite game of all time! I always love hearing people like you revisiting Splatoon 1.
To add to what you said about skill floor and accessibility, I really appreciate that Splatoon's reload button, run button and crouch button (and stealth button) all being one button. My clumsy self wouldn't be able to play player vs player shooters without the gyro aiming, so I love that Splatoon developers threw everything into making the gyro aim good; probably popularizing it.
The very serious security flaw, a remote code execution type, that resulted in Splatoon 1's official online being taken down is the same kind that has been in plenty of other online Nintendo games ranging from the Wii (not just Wii U) to the Switch (including handhelds, like the 3DS). It was found in Mario Kart 7 and reported to Nintendo in 2021's August (Mario Kart 8's exploit was reported in 2022's April) and it took them until 2022's December to fix it, so Nintendo has a record for being very slow with fixing their non-Switch games, but they did eventually do it, even knowing they're no longer supporting these older consoles. There's some hope, especially due to Splatoon developers being serious about not throwing away their past games (they didn't shut down Spla1 when the Switch's online required payment, they revived Spla2's Splatfests during the lockdown and after Spla3 was released, they still have Spla2 Salmon Run shifts).
I'll be giving this video a thumbs up with all of my TH-cam accounts and sharing it with others to celebrate Splatoon 1's anniversary.

Aside from the gameplay itself, the real thing that drew me into Splatoon was how charming the game’s world was. The setting was unique and the writing was hilarious. Another game I know that makes reloading not-boring: Receiver 2.
Every step of reloading your firearm is *manual.* This includes opening the cylinder/magazine, as well as pressing Z inserting only one individual bullet at a time. It ties greatly into the realistic portrayal of firearms that isn't usually found in grittier shooting games.
Learning how to operate the guns is fun and rewarding, and the Dreaming (the main mode of the game) gives you an indefinite amount of time and help to get used to such.

Day 73 of asking Nintendo to add recon mode to salmon run. Man it’s so crazy that I’ve litterally grew up with splatoon, started playing in like 7th grade and now I’m a full grown adult that’s graduated highschool and wakes up at 4am to go to work. Still have plenty of time to play splatoon luckily. The movement and art style is beautiful and is what drawn me in. I remember watching DUDE absolutely destroying in his old splatoon 1 tearing it up series and I was completely hooked, litterally bought a Wii U just for splatoon and it never got old. This game is amazing despite how many times we will complain about it. There’s NOTHING like it, it’s the first of its kind that people have only copied in boof ass ways. The game’s movement system, combined with the simplicity of its controls, and visual appeal, and compelling story mode with its own lore, and world building, is what drawn me to loving the Splatoon trilogy for years on end. No other shooter game that I’ve known has these, and couldn’t quite catch my attention as Splatoon did since its reveal in E3 those 8 years ago. Since then, Splatoon became my first ever shooter game I’ve ever played, and ever owned, and still is to this day.
Splatoon will always be known to me as not just a shooter game, but a shooter game with a lot of variety in weapon choices, unique play style, gimmicks, lots of customization options, a compelling story, and just some overall fun, and loving community.

This reminds me of Mark Brown's idea of "versatile verbs". There are so many clever ways that this game makes the most out of having very few buttons. The shoot button might cause a shot to be fired, but holding that button causes some weapons to keep shooting, while others use the hold to build a charge that is released when the player lets go of the button. That action can also be paired with the ADS button, so scoped weapons don't need a different input. That also means that there are even more challenging mechanics tied to that. All of this depth from a single button. That is what makes Splatoon great

  • @undefinederror40404
    @undefinederror40404 ปีที่แล้ว +2

This was very very interesting. Splatoon drew me in because you don't die in battles, the punishment is respawn time. It's not gruesome or aggressive, and because there is no (voice) chat you can barely create a mean interaction with other players. So not only is failing less scary, the odds of getting bullied are so much lower too. Then there is it's whole aesthetic, which is so awesome. I had not given it any thought besides that, but I can only agree with the points made in this video :D
Splatoon really nailed it on every front imo! Well.. hm, maybe more storytime and character development for the main idols of the game, but that just means we want to see more of thw characters :)

So, I'm someone who saw the commercial for this game when it was first announced and was mesmerized. The music, the art, the goofy aesthetic, and a shooter game that my parents would probably be fine with me playing. I played each of the testfire demos, making sure I set the time aside to play them regardless of the weird hours. I had a ridiculous amount of fun! I even got so hyped for the release that I set a countdown clock to when the game was going to arrive via mail.
Looking back the biggest draw of this game was the freedom it provided. This was one of the first games that I bought with my own money and it was my own decision to sink hours and hours of time into it. It never got old because there was always a way to improve whether it was aim or weapon choice or new gear.
I have continued to play this game through each and every iteration and as the games have grown I have too. At this point I feel a almost familial relationship with the game.
Its just plain and simple fun. Fluid, dynamic, ever changing yet consistently good fun.

I definitely was a casual in that game as until Splatoon 3's launch I thought Armor and Sting Ray were bad specials (lol) but surprisingly even at a more competitive level in 3 I've been able to have a lot of fun purely through the game's core mechanics and system. Can't wait to see the series continue, even if life will keep me too busy to extensively play later entries!

The fact the weapons are so outlandishly goofy like someone who doesnt know about splatoon asks "whats a good weapon?" and you look them dead in the eye and say a washing machine, also the wide variety of play styles and gear system is unique and fun

I actually got into splatoon in the weirdest way possible. One of my old friends got me into SMG4 and i fell in love with the character Meggy, and after some research i found out she was from splatoon. I watched some stuff online and absolutely fell in love with the game. I'd begged my parents to get it every single day, and i would talk about it nonstop to my friends, and i knew more about it than games i did already have at that time, and i got it not long before the ketchup vs mayo rerun splatfest. even now, so many years later from when i discovered it, this game has really changed my life. some of my closest friends were made through splatoon and i've had so many valuable and memorable experiences thanks to this funny squid kid game. thank you nintendo for creating this game that's done so much amazing stuff for so many people everywhere, including me ❤

Splatoon 3 is my first Splatoon game. I got it a few days after release and it became my new favorite multiplayer shooter. I don't like many multiplayer shooters like COD because they all feel the same. But splatoon provides a unique experience with its mechanics and themes.
Unlike other shooters that are just based on a war scenario with the same capture the flag gameplay, Splatoon offers a world in which sea life has dominated the planet, the struggles they all went through, and what their day to day lives are like. And it takes the standard capture the flag gameplay and turns it into something unique, rainmaker being a perfect example of this.
Plus as Chara pointed out in this video, the movement system provides an easy to learn, intriguing way to play the game. Splatoon offers a unique experience that most multiplayer shooter games don't offer.

Honestly my favorite aspect of the series has been the art, both with visuals and music.
It hooked me in as soon as I picked up splatoon 2 years ago, and has been a huge creative inspiration to me since.
The punk and alternative influences with inkling/octoling fashion and music artists really make me excited, especially since almost anything can work within that framework (from jazz to rock to even ska with the newest song from the season trailer). It has always felt very innovative as a series in this aspect and it makes me really happy (^.^)

I wouldn't be surprised if splatoon 2 and 3 both had times in their development where something akin to sub-strafing was implemented into the core moveset, and other movement mechanics for all weapons were discussed and ultimately scrapped because they felt it made the game too complicated. I have a feeling that a ground rule for the development of a new splatoon game is "Don't add anything to the movement options that requires thought." Squid rolls and surges are incredibly easy, and pretty much every other movement option hasn't changed since splatoon 1. You don't need to think, you just need to feel. it's like Gem said once. Mechanically, even a toddler could pick up splatoon pretty quickly, the higher level plays come more from awareness than pure mechanics

Great video as always! I agree with what you mean by the movement being so important. As someone who plays the dynamo roller, the best but also slowest weapon, it feels amazing that yeah the weapon’s flicks are slow, but that doesn’t mean I have to be either. I can still be a highly mobile killing machine!

And the crazy part about the movement in Splatoon is that, it almost happened by complete accident.
For the most of the game's early development, the characters were RABBITS, not squid.
The reason for this was that you could see which direction the character were moving on the gamepad based of where their ears were pointing at and the rabbits being only black or white made it easier to tell if your character got hurt by the enemy ink.
It's only when someone asked "why are rabbit shooting paint?" where they decided to make the characters squids (because they look almost like arrows on the gamepad) and making the paint squid ink. After that, the human looking kid form was added so the player could tell the difference from walking form vs swim form.
If the game had stay with the rabbit designs, the game's movement, one of the series biggest selling point, might have never existed.

Splatoon fills a niche us 90's/00's kids didn't really have growing up. There was no shooter for kids under 12, first person or otherwise and splatoon is basically that. Plus seeing the NES gun aka the n-zap and all the other nostalgic things from that era went a very long way in gaining traction from those who grew up during those times. I played splatoon 2 first - mainly due to my first exposure to splatoon was during the direct or e3 announcing 2 - and i fell in love with it in part because it reminded me parts of childhood that made me happy but i had nearly forgotten, and became the first shooter i've enjoyed in _years._ (since og perfect dark)

This is called the "Kirby effect". nintendo games grow "with you". They are as simple, or as complex as you want them to be. Other examples include pokemon, Smash Brothers, mario 64. It kinda reminds me of that scene from Robots where he gets new legs (weird comparison i know) but clearly as much as people wanna say these are "kids games" theres clearly depth and thought put into how adults or people with alot more complexity can still explore them. cause i can guarantee nobody as a kid knew what an perfect IV was or meant

there's a lot more to it than this but ultimately yes this is the core of it. This game, while not as complex as something like TF2 or Valorant, is its own very complex game that provides a pace far faster than any FPS game on the market due to the overall low death punishment and fast kill times.
Another small thing is sniping. In this game it is WAY harder than just about every other shooter that exists. You have to learn motion controls (which means you don't have aim assist,) your fire rate is far lower than others, you have to hit fast, often near-invisible targets, and your enemies just about always know where you are, where you're aiming, and most have a way to counter you with sub weapons. This is a genius way to nerf the overall most powerful weapon type across every game without relying on the same boring "glare" mechanics and still being fun for veterans and newbies alike. The small things like this are the things I think got me into this game

I'm an OG from Testfire 1. The really special stuff? Yes, the movement system is a big part of it, but I'd argue the other part of it is how good everything _else_ feels. Techs are easy to grasp and if you're paying attention, you can quickly become fast and fluid. So what makes Splatoon special? Name me a multiplayer shooter with such an ambitious movement system and stuff that's different that's got as _fast_ an average time to fun.
