- New for 2021 you can pick up a prepaid order when you pickup your bees but the shop will be closed, so please order ahead! The pickup will again be contactless but we're happy to answers questions below or give a call to the shop.
6 years ago I purchased my first 2 nucs from you at Hudson Valley Bee Supply then the following year I purchased 3 more nucs from you again. Ever since then I have not had to purchase bees (sorry😀) due to Jorik and Megan spending countless hours with me answering questions, explaining techniques, and generally schooling me to be a successful bee keeper. At my peak I was at over 20 colonies and have given away countless swarms, nucs, and splits to friends and fellow Beekeepers. How long should I leave the new bees in the single, deep super before building the hive (2 deeps and 2 mediums)?
Thanks for the great video. Can you add the bees to drawn frames or should the frames be blanks with no drawn comb?
Package bees are a wax making machine! If you feed them well they will draw beautiful comb on your foundation. However, if you install them on previously drawn comb, their population will increase much faster and they will build a foraging force that can take better advantage of the earlier nectar flows.
I have 10 frame hives and for now I put only 9 frames in the hive to give queen cage some space. Do you approve that?
WHat day of the week do the bees usually come in for pick up ?
How much space should there be between queen cage and a frame next to it? I had frame with the drawn comb and left some space so the bees can get to the queen. Was I right to do so?
I installed my bees today. In how many days should I check on the queen?

We lost our hive in January, but still have nearly 2 boxes of comb drawn out. Do we install the bees in the bottom box with the 2nd box on top?

It’s gonna be rather chilly the few weeks after we get the bees. Is there anything we should do differently since it will be down in the 30s at night?
Nope! As long as bees have access to food they will be just fine in the cold.
I have frames of comb and honey from a hive that did not make it through the winter. Please tell me how to use those frames for these new bees. I have 8-frame hives.
Installing a bee package on existing comb is a fantastic way to start a new colony, especially if you have honey stored in those combs. I would place the emptier combs in the center to give the queen a place to get laying. Place frames that contain more honey toward the outside. If we were expecting unseasonably cold temps you might want to place a honey frame towards the middle so tightly clustering bees will still be able to access it.
So if it is 50 which it most likely will should we spray the bees in the package?
Yes. And, if you find the bees are flying around quite a bit, just mist them a little more to keep them out of the air. You'll get a feel for it.
Would we have to present proof of purchase to pick up the package?
No, it won't be that formal. Just give us your name when you pull in and we'll check against our list to see how many to give you.
