I recently attended a beginner beekeeping class, three days, and I'm reading the book that was given in the class, "beekeeping for dummies". I don't normally like the dummies books, but I know nothing about bee keeping and the book is very informative. While searching for beekeeping videos I found you, I was hoping to gain a different prospective on beekeeping. After watching your first video where you said that everyone has a different way of beekeeping, I was hooked. I definitely need the reinforcement of what I've learned from the class and book, but it's great seeing you're prospective. For instance, I was taught to shake the bees from the package. However, I like the way that you just allowed the bees....well to do what bees do. Your way seems to be the more natural way of installing a package of bees. Thanks for the education!
There are a lot of "Beekeeping 101" or beginner videos on youtube but this one had by far the most pertinent information for the first steps in setting up my hive. Thanks a million Doug! Subscribed!
2020 i got 2 nucs after 3 weeks they swarmed. No after listening to you i no why. My friend came over and said you have like 5 queen cells. So i did nothing few days latter came home they swarmed. I caught the swarm and made another hive. This march these 2 hives survived other died off. What a year as new bee keeper.

What an excellent way to move the ladies to their new home! You really love your bees! I wish all bee-keepers had the same attitude. Sometimes, dollars, cents, and lack of time leads to bad practices.

I ordered 2 packs last week. Then had some wild scouts checking out my hives today. Ended up ordering 2 more hives just in case I get lucky on some wild swarms in the previous set up. It'll be my first time as well. I pray you have great luck in your new hobby

I am hoping to start beekeeping in the next year or two. I am learning a lot of great info from your videos. I did not know you could put two queens in one hive. Keep being the great wealth of knowledge that you are!
Not sure but think there is a divider board between the two queens or they are in separate boxes side by side. If two queens in one hive one will kill the other.

I hung my queen cage in between the frames with a bamboo stick then I placed my bee-bus in front of the hive with the big hole facing the hive entrance and they just marched right in NO SHAKE, NO SUGAR WATER, NO SMOKE. great video thank you for not smoking or sprying the bees with sugar water is totally unnecessary
The only thing I found questionable about that technique was not securing the queen cage to the frame with that pre-attached clip or a rubberband. I DO like your technique of allowing the bees to migrate into the deep box frames at their leisure, without a shake-out. Good Tips !

That's a good question. I only have one hive but I love looking at it. After installing and hive is good how often is good and safe. I've been trying to do once a week. But I get itchy and want to go in more often but have stoped myself. Have to feed every 4 days right now. With round top feeder
I have never installed a package, now since a 5 frame nuke is the same price here in Canada, i just get nukes that has 3 frames brood already cheers my 2 cents worth now to address the video it's probably the best way i have seen. very gentle way. And if i ever had to do it with a package this would be my way now
Doug that was a good video. I'm unfamiliar with the "Side by Side" Placement of the packages. How did you divide the hive? You mentioned a Divider but I couldn't see it.

When you do bee packages, what sort of cut off ratio would you suggest for determining, there's too many dead bees on a package versus not too many and the package is fine after receiving packages (& ideal window to watch these ratios by)?
Thanks for the great question. I think it depends on the geographic area. If you live in Florida maybe some shade would be nice. I use shade to slow down my nucs from getting to big to fast. I use full sun for honey producing hives so the bees will go out early and stay out till dark. I live in NW Indiana so it doesn't get crazy hot in the summer.
Why do you do your hives the way you do? Is there a divider between both colonies? Is there a benefit of doing your hives this way? Im new to beekeeping so any information you can give is greatly appreciated. Thanks Evonne from East Bernstadt, KY
Am I correct: did you put 2 boxes of bees into 1 hive, with 2 queens? We have ordered 2 boxes of bees, to come in a few days, and were under the impression that they would go into 2 distinct hive boxes, with I queen per hive. And what about front feeders, should we use them? That’s what we have used in the past. Thank you kindly.
Thanks for the great question. Sometimes I do move them to full hives, or I sell them. They do just fine in 1/2 a box you just have to manage them more or they will swarm.

Hello We watch your videos and as a new beekeeper I have all new equipment Some of this stuff smells like pine sap. We do not have any seasoned boxes. Is there any thing we can do to make the boxes more appealing to the bee?
My husband and I are educating ourselves about beekeeping and plan to start next spring. It looked like you installed two queens into the one brood box. Did you? How does that work?
Now that's a great question! I'm not an entomologist so I really don't know. But I would guess they don't go to the bathroom in the first 10 days of their life. They can hold their excrement for 3 to 6 weeks during winter.
How much does one pack cost approximately? Love your videos by the way bees are my fav animals and I convinced my parents to let me get bees and we will take classes but thank you for simpler ways!
Holy cow a kid that wants bees. Good luck. Learn to raise bees and you'll make money. The honey just sort of happens if you know how to make new colonies.
I have a frame of honey from the last failed hive. The frame is in the refrigerator. Can I put that frame in the hive when I introduce my new batch of bees?
Yes you can absolutely do that and the bees will consume it. The honey may be crystallized but the bees can still eat it. In the future you should freeze the honey which will keep it in the liquid form. Storing honey at refrigerator temperatures will accelerate the crystallization process. Not sure of there is anything a guy can do, but the bees seems be making what I'm calling "foney-comb" or Funny Comb. Any tips or just let them do their thing?
Hi Sarah. I keep them in the side by side nuc configuration and build them up to 2 or 3 deeps then I add a queen excluder and some honey supers. @@DougtheBeeGuy why on earth do you run a brood chamber three times the size it actually needs to be? I tried double deeps in illinois and seriously it's too much work going thru twenty deep frames times 40 colonies. A single is a beautiful thing when it's wall to wall brood.
Gayle thanks so much for the great question! Everyone starts with no wax at some point in their journey. Don't worry about it the bees will make the wax. If you are using wax foundation in a frame the bees will draw it out quickly, if you are using plastic foundation it may take them a little longer since they usually polish the plastic to remove the smell or residue that is left after manufacture. In my experience the pre-waxed plastic foundation is accepted better than plain plastic. No matter what kind of frames you end up using you need to feed your bees 1:1 sugar syrup to stimulate their wax glands. Even if you have a nectar flow, feeding your bees will enhance their wax production.

@@khaskin18 so I did use this method and it didn’t go as smoothly as in his video, and I wished I DID have a smoker cause those pesky bees were all over me when I took the can out- I tried that sideways method of shaking it but that didn’t work for me so I had to pry from the top...also...be VERY careful to remove the cork at the sugar end of the queen cage ...in my haste, I opened the other one and a bee flew right out...I’ll know in a day or two if it was the queen, which wasn’t marked...Somehow I don’t think it was her though...my only concern now is whether or not there’s enough food in the box to last until I go back in there cause I don’t want to open it too soon. Also, I did see lots of bee activity around the hive yesterday, the morning after the installation so they did get out...they were circling around in the air...good luck with your installation.
@@gaylehay2323 oh my! I hope your queen is still in there! I guess sometimes things don't go perfectly. But I suppose that's how we learn. We installed ours pretty smoothly. They were SO ready to get out though! I sprayed then with sugar water before we left the post office. And their sugar can was empty. I had them flying at my face when we opened the box, but I think it's because I was wearing sunglasses lol. I guess I won't do THAT again🤣. We're about to go back and take the package and top box off of the hive. We even decided to make our own TH-cam channel. That’s a damned good question. His installation method is interesting, but unless I missed it he didn’t explain why he put two packages in a single deep box. I’m afraid this is very confusing for anyone who’s not worked with bees before. So note to newbies: DON’T INSTALL TWO PACKAGES IN ONE HIVE!!!
Yes typically the queens are mated before they are inserted into the packages. Sometimes when the weather is poor, when packages are made up the queen won’t be mated properly and will take another mating flight after the package is installed.
I just assume he is trying to fill those large hives up and give them a big head start by putting two packages in at once. In the process sacrificing a queen per each hive. Letting them choose which queen they want.
He has the 10 frame hive separated in the middle so they don't interact with each other. Its important to keep them separated so they don't kill a queen.
You need to put the screen facing out 90° from the frame so the other Bees can get to her if you put her flat like you’re showing and you have the other room next to it the bees can’t get to her mouth and a tender her

You can always put a rubber band on the frame to hold the queen makes it easy. Great work.

Rub the inside with a bit of warmed propolis. A drop of lemongrass essential oil can help also.
where do I go to pick up a bee package with the queen? I live in Lansing, MI.

The deep brood box has a divider board. It's a cheap alternative instead of buying 2 Nuc boxes.

Yep that will work fine. Just make sure they can get to the candy.

Hi Sarah. I keep them in the side by side nuc configuration and build them up to 2 or 3 deeps then I add a queen excluder and some honey supers. @@DougtheBeeGuy why on earth do you run a brood chamber three times the size it actually needs to be? I tried double deeps in illinois and seriously it's too much work going thru twenty deep frames times 40 colonies. A single is a beautiful thing when it's wall to wall brood.

What do you do if you are brand new...and don’t have ANY old frames to use...only brand new ones?
Gayle thanks so much for the great question! Everyone starts with no wax at some point in their journey. Don't worry about it the bees will make the wax. If you are using wax foundation in a frame the bees will draw it out quickly, if you are using plastic foundation it may take them a little longer since they usually polish the plastic to remove the smell or residue that is left after manufacture. In my experience the pre-waxed plastic foundation is accepted better than plain plastic. No matter what kind of frames you end up using you need to feed your bees 1:1 sugar syrup to stimulate their wax glands. Even if you have a nectar flow, feeding your bees will enhance their wax production.

@@khaskin18 so I did use this method and it didn’t go as smoothly as in his video, and I wished I DID have a smoker cause those pesky bees were all over me when I took the can out- I tried that sideways method of shaking it but that didn’t work for me so I had to pry from the top...also...be VERY careful to remove the cork at the sugar end of the queen cage ...in my haste, I opened the other one and a bee flew right out...I’ll know in a day or two if it was the queen, which wasn’t marked...Somehow I don’t think it was her though...my only concern now is whether or not there’s enough food in the box to last until I go back in there cause I don’t want to open it too soon. Also, I did see lots of bee activity around the hive yesterday, the morning after the installation so they did get out...they were circling around in the air...good luck with your installation.
@@gaylehay2323 oh my! I hope your queen is still in there! I guess sometimes things don't go perfectly. But I suppose that's how we learn.
We installed ours pretty smoothly. They were SO ready to get out though! I sprayed then with sugar water before we left the post office. And their sugar can was empty. I had them flying at my face when we opened the box, but I think it's because I was wearing sunglasses lol. I guess I won't do THAT again🤣. We're about to go back and take the package and top box off of the hive. We even decided to make our own TH-cam channel. Even if we don't get famous, we can still have record of our adventures in beekeeping lol.

Yes typically the queens are mated before they are inserted into the packages. Sometimes when the weather is poor, when packages are made up the queen won’t be mated properly and will take another mating flight after the package is installed.
Sir what is the purpose of the Can?

I just assume he is trying to fill those large hives up and give them a big head start by putting two packages in at once. In the process sacrificing a queen per each hive. Letting them choose which queen they want.
He has the 10 frame hive separated in the middle so they don't interact with each other. Its important to keep them separated so they don't kill a queen.
You need to put the screen facing out 90° from the frame so the other Bees can get to her if you put her flat like you’re showing and you have the other room next to it the bees can’t get to her mouth and a tender her
