Woah, this is a creative masterclass in how to create your own prompts! The guidance you offer for magic-related prompts is top-notch, and doubles as an adaptable model for creating custom uses of the deck!

This is some fun stuff. I have the complete collection (and let me tell you, getting it past the customs in my home country was a chore and a half), and I do plan to use it in figuring out some settings and magic systems myself. The endless writing hooks should help out a lot when it comes to trying to start stories.

Glad you were able to get it through! I freaking love this tool so I hope you find it as amazing and fun as I do

Never heard of this, but it's amazing! What a great toolbox. And I like your prompt ideas too. Now if I only had the money for all these brilliant products I keep hearing about. 😞

I feel that. Even with all the stuff I've been able to collect over the years, there is a much BIGGER list of things I want and can't afford yet.
Note, they do sell PDFs of the decks so you can print and cut them yourself or even convert them into roll tables

It’s interesting to think about the different options I would have picked with these draws. Like for Erasing vs Restoring memories, I would have gone with Restoring, making a very different story. Or for a different one, I would end up with a haunted gardener instead of a conservationist.

One of my favourite things to do with the deck is seeing how two writers could create entirely different stories out of the same set of prompts! Sometimes, even when they choose the same cues to work with, their interpretation of how those cues come together will be totally different!

@@StoryEngineDeck That's what's so great about this tool. I love using it with my coaching clients when they're really stuck. Between the prompt and two different brains, we ALWAYS come up with interesting ideas

Oooo. I'm intrigued by the haunted gardener! And how would you have used the Restoring of memories?

@@themagicengineer5314 In terms of restoring memories, I’d use it as a kind of quest to uncover lost/forgotten information that the main character needs. Perhaps the memories were removed from a character and the protagonist is trying to get them back (now that I think about it, that’s basically the plot of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle; also amnesia plot-lines, to an extent), or maybe the “memories” bit refers to historical knowledge the protagonist is trying to uncover.

I love the Story Engine, and really need to use it more, so seeing how it could help give ideas for magic systems is awesome!
To be honest, after seeing this, I actually ended up creating my own prompt selection: basically, I wanted to create a color-coded magic system similar to Planeswalker magic from Magic: The Gathering (wherein each color is associated with different abstract concepts). Since I didn’t want to risk ripping off MtG (intentionally or not), I came up with a system-for each color, I would pick four aspect cards and arrange them together to form whatever the color was associated with.
For instance: for red magic, I got the aspects “Miraculous, Ghostly, Forgotten, Vindictive”. With this, I came to the conclusion that red magic, in this world, is associated with spirits, religion, gods, shamanism, and the afterlife, often dealing with things like exorcisms, communing with spirits, placating angry gods (as well as calling upon them for help), and even discovering hidden or forgotten things (divine or not).

that's really cool! If you find yourself just using the aspect cards alot, you might enjoy working with the Mythulu Creation Cards: th-cam.com/video/Zb583s0cbSg/w-d-xo.html

@@themagicengineer5314 Thanks for the suggestion! But, to be honest, I already have those (well, at least a digital version).
I really like them, though, and I hope to use them more. 🙂

Thanks for this fantastic post. I have the Story Engine and have not yet had a chance to really play with it; but since I bought your book, and now seen this video, it will help with development of my magic system. Cheers!

When Forging a town, it is not the magic that destroys the original, but the caster needs to destroy core aspects of the original town (the people inside, an irreplacable landmark or cultural artifact, ...)

    • @themagicengineer5314
      @themagicengineer5314  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh... that's good too. That way the destruction is entirely the responsibility of the caster. That's some good villain building stuff right there!
