I LOVE Teddy and I'm sorry but my god I was laughing my ass off from his comment about how this movie is a social criticism about not wanting to believe your kid could be possessed. And it was said with such sincerity!
When I was a kid I snuck and watched this movie... BIG MISTAKE! I was sleeping with the lights on for a week!

*Agreed.* I would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the first film. IMO, it's really not the same kind of film. Nor does it try to be. But it's definitely a solid suspenseful film in its own right. I've definitely watched *The Exorcist III* more times than the first film.
I also like the aspect of it having been filmed, _as well as set,_ 17 years later.

The medical, hospital stuff is what freaked people out. That's what made them feel ill.
I swore that the way they explained how she became possessed was that the charm piece he dug up with that sculpted demon mask was put on a bracelet that got stolen, or somehow was mailed to the mother as a gift.
Once Reagan wore it and found the ouija board, she ended up contacting the demon itself, which knew the old priest from a previous encounter.
Everyone forgets that Exorcist 3 is actually really good considering it wasn't supposed to be an Exorcist movie until near the end of filming.

Exorcist III: Legion, is great and well worth watching. Avoid the others at all costs.
The book makes it plain that the demon in The Exorcist is the same demon which Merrin defeated in Africa when he was younger, and so this is a rematch which specifically targets Merrin. He becomes aware that this is about to happen when he encounters the various omens during the archaeological dig in Iraq and then decides to return to the US to await the summons for another exorcism.
Teddy’s tangents are too funny and keep me engaged every time love from the UK

If you enjoy the film, you should go and see the live version if it's ever in a theatre near you! It's actually amazing and scary. A bit different than the film though. At least the version that I saw. (the devil was narrated by Ian McKellen!!)

I love this movie. I still remember the first time I watched this so terrifying and creepy. One of the best if not the best made horror movie ever, OG John carpenter Halloween is maybe the only rival.
My mom saw it in theaters and said she sat with her knees to her chest and wrapped herself under the hoodie and watched the rest with tunnel vision.

Regarding tbe most obscene stuff Regan says in the movie, it was actually played by another actress, with the same make up (specially talking about the scene when Regan self inflcts wounds with the cross).

Sadly, it seems less impactful to (it sounded like) *Ted.* And instead of including *my* opinion, I suggest you view some *reactor videos* as they watch this film. You will see that _it very much stands up as much today as it did then,_ particularly to some who have _never seen it before._
I think it is perhaps that desensitized perspective. 🤷🏼♂️
*The Exorcist III* is definitely the one to watch after. It was film 17 years later and takes place 17 years later. It's not the same kind of film, and doesn't try to be. But it is a solid, suspenseful, and well-made follow up, IMO. And hey, it has *Brad Dourif* in it!
*Addendum:* (Regarding the question at 8:24) The Ouija board appears to be what opens the door to *Regan* getting possessed.

Movie sound in the 70s had lots of gimmicks (Quad sound anyone?) but after Dolby it's a different world. Digital sound has trained our ears to expect a crisper mix. I'm not adverse to that director's remix at all.

Yep. It created a whole new atmosphere and precedent that film makers still use to this day. What makes it stand out for me is that we got to get to know the characters. Most horror movies seem lazy and pandering and we never really get to know the characters.
And the lighting, the set, the blocking and dialogue were absolutely perfect.
Just finished watching it now! Excellent film! Doesn't scare me nearly as much as the Conjuring did last night. But absolute classic!
But yea if this really happened, that thought is terrifying. Just the dated visuals, as good as they are, don't hold up but the audio definitley does for me!
@nerdsoup yo you guys should check out the exorcist tv show. its about that little girl growing up and her daughter becoming possessed bu the same demon i believe. goes more into why she was taken. Kinda cheesy but if you can appreciate the story its good. there was a 2nd season with a bigger story but it got canceled in my opinion sadly. if you guys look at comment though def check it

Exorcist II The Heretic gets so much hate. Honestly it’s not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I actually prefer to watch it over the original. People were expecting a direct horror sequel but instead they got something more cerebral and they didn’t like it.
Too bad because god damn the second movie is visual magic.

It’s worth a watch. There are so many other themes and messages presented. It is a slow burn, we get to know the characters and the setting, etc before the real apparent chaos and horror. It’s just a wonderful story and William Blatty is a genius.
I rewatched the exorcist to fully appreciate the review. Honestly? Kinda lame. I am a catholic even and it seemed like it laid on the religious stuff SO heavy. Catholic priests are sacrificial heroes and the priest who survives is kissed and thanked by the kid.
It also seemed to make it all the child's fault? For playing with a toy she was possessed. Modern science couldn't help at all. They had to turn to God. Just way too heavy handed.
