The confusion when the first notes of Rick Astley's song is sung and the shift when Rebecca hesitated singing 'goodbye' is what blows me away. It's the subtle way of telling us, that even if she hated her dad for cheating on her mother, she still loved him and misses him. Hannah gave us amazing performance here, holly shit.
It’s dark because there’s nothing good she has to say about her father, every one is anticipating, from his own daughter of all people, something deep and heartfelt and she chooses rather to rickroll them, specifically her father. Her mother loved the song so it was a gift and a cryptic message to her. She gave her father nothing. They in the end, get the last laugh. 😂
Not a joke. Just because the world had made a meme of the song doesn't mean it cant have deep meaning to someone. I'm glad the writers didn't ignore the possibility.
The fact that she was able to sell this moment, and with so much nuance on top of the emotion that absolutely shouldn't work this well, is insane. What a talent.
I think it is because she spends the whole show being a strong boss lady... and this is the moment she appears the weakest. It all adds to the gravity of "everyone is human".
I'm glad that the universe finally got around to recognizing Sheryl Lee Ralph and that she got to deliver an acceptance speech for the ages. That having been said, Waddingham deserved every ounce of a second Emmy for this episode.
Once again Ted is the beacon of hope. I mean what a guy. He’s the last one to show up and yet he’s the only one who helped Rebecca with the song (at first) to get her motivated to continue.
This scene perfectly captures how and why this show is so good. Emotional scenes that hit you to the core, coupled with comedic moments with insanely great timing.
As a writer I personally feel that this show, both seasons, have been amazing and well deserved of the Emmy wins that it garnered. It is in the shows best interest to have the focus shift amongst all the different characters, otherwise things get stale fast. For example, the episode with Beard was a brilliant homage to Scorsese, ( his film "After Hours") who as you know they have referenced before on the show (the episode where they remove the curse, for example). I give a lot of respect to these writers, it is very hard to keep putting out a consistently good product regularly
That’s maybe why they keep ‘homaging’ - because it’s too difficult to come up with their own inspiration. This episode was like a very poor Richard Curtis impression
@@LaPtiteAnglaise Well, that is certainly an interesting take on an Emmy award winning show. I often wonder what compels people to post negative comments about what they don't like. Amazing how this episode is going to secure Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham an Emmy nomination (at least) for next year just a few days after they won their Emmys for season 1.
I think it’s the lyric “desert you” that hits him hard all of a sudden because he just got done talking about how his dad committed suicide & it feels like he quit on his family
I love this scene so much. Instead of being spiteful toward her father, which would only serve to upset her mother (considering her father isn't exactly there to hear it), Rebecca simply chooses to make her mum smile.
This is such a moving scene. This entire episode Rebecca is dealing with her hatred for her dad and now hating her mom for letting her dad treat her that way. For loving him anyway. Being expected to speak, but having nothing good to say for her father while being true to herself she instead reaches out to her mother, a song that made her happy. In a way its an apology to her mom and a reconciliation that theyre different people. She's angry at her mom for not being strong like her, but realizes her mom still manages to be a person full of love, joy and kindness despite everything else. You could probably draw some comparison as well with the lyrics and her feelings toward Sam. It also ends up helping Keely and Roy later on as well. Ted Lasso is a beautiful show. Like nothing Ive seen in ages.
My soulmate just passed away unexpectedly recently, and I came across this quite by accident. I was going to change the channel on my tv - but then this came on and it led me to your comment... My partner's name was Sam! Can you tell me what show this is from please? TIA! Louise x
I was fully prepared to be sniffling & laughing from the first few words she sung (the first half of the episode leading up to this didn't help either, despite being an episode centered around a funeral) But it was only then did I realize the lyrics for this song is actually pretty fitting for a funeral eulogy. & never in my life would I expect to be emotional whilst being rickrolled by a show (& as someone's already mentioned) three times in 1 episode.
i love the order of who sings: first ted, obviously then Keeley, rebecca's first real friend (apart from sassy) then Sam and then everyone else joins in
impossible... it's impossible to view this scene without becoming... - emotional -. There are episodes of television that transcend their series, their genres, where they should belong... to become... 'historic' in their own right. I would humbly pose, that in a series of outstanding episodes, Ted Lasso's S2/E10 - 'No Weddings and a Funeral' is one of the best of these - 'historic' - episodes; as good as TV gets.
Huh. I mean, obviously it’s not a perfect connection, but I would never have considered those lyrics in the context of a death, and it actually works fairly well

Damn I thought I'll gonna be funny but Its completely get emotional and the lyrics matches the moment beautifully, That mean the one who passed aways, will never gonna say goodbye and will stay forever in their hearts. Such a lovely song❣️🙌🏻
My friend Connor passed away this year and he was the funniest, goofiest, and caring guy I had ever met. I went to his celebration of life/funeral and the service was beautiful. They displayed pictures of him on big screens via projectors and his close family and friends spoke. At the end when his mom dismissed everyone and said thank you for coming, the big screens started playing the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up. It then had added words to the video that read “Get recked! love, Connor” and I started to bittersweetly smile knowing that Connor would have loved this. I’m not sure if he got his idea from Ted Lasso, I was just told that his friends from school said he mentioned Rick rolling people at his funeral and his family liked that idea. I recently started to watch Ted Lasso because of the gorgeous Hannah Waddingham and I stayed for the plot and the Kansas references (I’m from Kansas). It seems this scene has had a deeper meaning to me than intended due to my experiences. Most of these comments talk about this being dark humor and I do agree that it has somewhat of a humorous aspect to it. But, I also believe it is showing that the small things we overlooked can mean a lot to someone and just by us acknowledging that small thing can make a big difference (As Rebecca overlooked her mom’s love for this song but then in this moment realized why she loved the song and decided to connect with her in this way). As a show that has so many comedic aspects to it I surprised by how many heartfelt moments like these were in it. This show is so beautiful written and I can’t wait for the next season to come out!
