And here's why this show and this scene is so powerful: Sherlock looks up and sees the room emotional and tears and he quickly cannot comprehend what's going on. He doesn't comprehend, just like he said he doesn't. And he doesn't try to figure it out. He doesn't try to escape or bluff. He simply turns and says, "John?" That little line. That ask for his friend. That's their whole of Sherlock's trust in his best friend. And what does John do? He doesn't scoff or berate. He too understands his friend. This scene is perfect.
That's exactly why this scene is so beautifully written. The speech sounds emotional, but it isn't - listen to every line and word, and it is simply Sherlock stating facts. The closest it gets to emotion is when he references Mary's love, and even this is just mere moments after explaining how he sees it but doesn't comprehend. The logic is the point. The speech sounds emotionally written, but its Sherlock-style emotion. Factual praise. So when faced with a room full of emotion, he does the only thing he can think of and asks his best friend for help. He's lost, he's confused and needs saving from the situation, and in doing so reveals just how much he cares for John, even if he can't comprehend why.
It's like Sherlock says, "the kindest and wisest man I have ever had the good fortune of knowing, intelligence is not wisdom, and while Sherlock may be once of the most fiercely intelligent people on the planet, his wisdom pales in comparison to John
@@MW-km2uj As with all things Sherlock Holmes does, it is an analysis. But instead of analyzing a crime scene, he is analyzing his feelings about John.
The most interesting thing is that the cold insults and criticism at the beginning don't weaken what he says after, they reinforce it. He shows how much of an asshole he can be, and that's exactly why it is so powerful to hear him praising John, because it has to be sincere, and probably even understated. And the second most interesting thing is how Sherlock's first reflex when he doesn't understand people's emotions is to ask John for help.
I would not be surprised if that was in fact his intention from the start. If Lestrade really did help him with the speech, he should start writing himself…
This shows that the two make a perfect partner. While Sherlock is VERY VERY smart, he lacks the social skills/norm because he deems it "not needed" and John can fill that because Sherlock not sure how to learn it because he feels he is incapable.

But put them together, or have them collaborate on a project, and this is the quality of work that gets produced. I'd love to be able to pen something so touching. Sherlock has the notes because just like the rest of us, in this instance, he was nervous. Watson is his dearest friend. But, Sherlock would only show this at a special moment like this. It also humanizes him. Really great scene and echoes of Conan Doyle.
We can also see how he was nervous when the first thing he did after realizing everyone was crying was asking if he did something wrong. I do think this question shows he was a bit desperate by the idea of making such an important thing wrong (I mean, desperate to Sherlock, which is showing the littlest amount of emotion)
@@nixie2462 what would you rather say? I think you either forgot or deleted the word "I would rather say *(I guess here you either forgot or deleted it)* than instead (...)"
"im not finished yet" has to be the purest form of sherlock. Man loves his friend so much without understanding how great he shares it in his weird way that he doesnt know how much he moves people by saying such simple words
This was always my favorite episode in the series because 1. This speech 2. The way he solves the mystery in this episode just feels so different and personal compared to the rest of the show 3. It is probably the show’s only truly John-centered episode. Also, one of my favorite part in this episode is the part where John, the moment he figured out the victim is still alive, quickly took charge while Sherlock, who always the guy in charge of the cases, quickly stood back and let John take the lead. Truly the moment that says Sherlock will solve your murder while John will save your life
The way Sherlock solves the mystery is so different because he had pressure on his shoulders that time - and he felt it. When he continued the speech trying to solve the case, he was also pretty worried about not ruining John's wedding, and saving someone's life while also needing to understand who would be that someone and how but having no time, since it could happen at any moment - and that was probably the last thing he would want to happen at John's wedding (this is clear specially when you see how much he took the best man responsibilities and made sure to talk to every guest to make what they should/should not do just not to ruin John's day). He was kinda desperate, that's why it takes him so long to find out who was the one about to die (I mean... There's one person who's never in public and is also hated by a good amount of people.... Sherlock would've spotted this in a second if he didn't need to entertain a crowd that couldn't really suspect there was something wrong when he himself is not at all a sociable person and doesn't really understands human emotions/reactions in general.) This is the most emotion Sherlock has ever showed (him saying those things but also showing physically) and the whole process of finding things out in this episode has emotion on it. That's why it feels so different
Mary, when I say you deserve this man, it is the highest compliment of which I am capable. John, you have endured war, and injury, and tragic loss ... so sorry again about that last one ... ... so know this: today you sit between the woman you have made your wife and the man you have saved - in short, the two people who love you most in all this world. And I know I speak for Mary as well when I say we will never let you down, and we have a lifetime ahead to prove that

I miss those days I wish I could go back then in time and relive all these years again having my present consciousness
The "So sorry, again, about that last one" kills me
This is the reason why this is my Favourite Episode in the Third Season.
How does this only have 6 comments?
Because it only has 10,000 views
There is a few other videos of this with 800k views and millions of views etc
Hard to fucking comment, when eyes are sweating.
That was one of the most beautiful speeches I've ever heard.
I absolutely love this show the best Sherlock Holmes series with the best dialogue ever!!
Best wedding speech of all series ever
When this series was on netflix I watched continuously. Month after month And I miss it. And this is one of my favorite scenes
Martin Freeman has completely owned the " did I just hear that right" facial reaction . Second place goes to the John Krasinski in the American office.
Great writing and brilliantly delivered say no more I'm crying 😭
Speaking the truth liberates both the wielder and those exposed
He started talking about contrast between himself and Watson to be rude at first, and then used his rudeness to contrast him with Watson to be extraordinarily kind.
"We'll never let you down, and we have a lifetime ahead to prove that!"- Sherlock
"Oh Sherlock!"- Mrs. Hudson
Both lines brought tears in my eyes!
This show was amazing as was this speech!
1:40 john's look is like, hang on this brother is cooking😂😂😂😂
I've never understood why some aren't a fan of this episode. I think it was one of the best.
