    This is so on time. I'm a fairly recent subscriber who larger uses containers. My first tomato plant is in a 10 gal bag. There's not much advice out there for fabric bags. I was worried about overwatering but from observation I realized that I'd been underwatering my determinate Rutger plant that recently started flowering. I have 8 other plants that I've grown from seed that I just transplanted. I'll be following along for all of your advice.

    Fabric pots have been awesome for me since the actual ground is soggy wet most of the summer. I got close to 30 large tomatoes off of one tomato plant (heat resistant variety called Marion) in a 7 gal fabric pot. Really cool to see the air pruning effects! I'm switching all my fruit trees, even large trees into 30-40 gal fabric pots. Such a great invention!

    I'm using grow bags for the first time this year. My garden has been in my front yard the last several years and the biggest challenge was figuring out where to place plants due to the large maple tree there. Last year, I got notice that our county was going to do road improvements and need part of my front yard--new challenge in how far up they will come into the yard! These bags will help solve that problem because I will be able to move them if I have to!

    Last year I grew both determinate and indeterminate tomatoes in fabric pots. It was the worst crop ever. I think most of it had to do with watering. Hi Gary, I had this idea for the root bags and I actually have did this. I put my root bag in a plastic garbage bag so I don't have to water much and when the plant gets to a size I think roots are going to come out, I just pull the bag down on the sides. This allows me to keep plants moist and save on water until they get bigger. Works great!

    I’ve been growing in felt buckets for a few years now. I grow indeterminate tomatoes in 17 gallon buckets. They are still light and the handles are strong enough to lift when full. One problem I have found is if they get a lot of rain or they touch each other mold can grow on the outside.

    Very informative as usual. All my gardening is in containers both hydroponic and potting mixes that I make up. The hydroponic tomatoes hands down beat the grow bag tomatoes both in growth and production. I think my big problem with grow bags is under fertilization and inconsistent watering. The other problem in reusing potting mixes is the weeds still pop up, sometimes ruthlessly.

    • @patriciamorehouse5704
      @patriciamorehouse5704 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Blake, is hydrophonic expensive or hard to keep the NPK at correct levels?

    • @pizmot3893
      @pizmot3893 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patriciamorehouse5704 The initial outlay for hydroponics is pricey, but everything except the fertilizer (masterblend tomato formula) is reusable. My tomatoes were grown in 5 gallon buckets with aeration (air pump needed). Since tomatoes can use up so much water in their life cycle, the buckets need to be replenished often. Keep a 30 gallon tote with nutrient solution at the ready for this. Hate to say it, but I don't pay too much attention to the NPK because the testors are so expensive nor do I put a fresh batch of nutrient solution in as some recommend on the internet. Just top off from the pre-mixed tote. Actually rain is your worst enemy in screwing up outdoor hydroponics where the grow bags don't have that problem since they are porous. But then again, the grow bags being porous, your fertilizer is draining as well and this is why I probably have some problem with grow bags and not fertilizing enough.

    Hi Gary. I have a Big Rainbow seedling that is odd looking. It's growing fast and looks like there are no disease but at this stage, aren't there suppose to have suckers around? It does seem to have leaf branches that are irregularly 1/2 and inch or so from the next branch. Also there seemed to be a 2nd leader stem that was not from a suckers. Is that all normal? Or do indeterminate tomatoes grow suckers later on? Thanks for your help. I really need to understand my plants better

  • @HomeGrownVeg
    @HomeGrownVeg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like to recycle whatever mix I am growing in so at the end of the year I have a stack of plastic grow buckets filled with the mix standing outdoors. After sitting through Autumn and Winter I empty them out into a wheelbarrow in Spring add some fertiliser then re charge and 'plant up' the buckets again. This year I am trying fabric bags. I have nowhere else I could sit the mix over the colder months so it's my intention to overwinter the mix in the bags. Have you ever done that? Will the bags 'hold out', what do you think. Jim.

I planted the seeds in the end of May and by the end of September they are still in the process of producing, so I would say 60 to 80 days is ultra fast.Probably you live in a warmer climate.

Should I purchase 5 and 10 gallon fabric pots? Thank you for your time.

    What is your current recommendation on the use of 'Epsom Salts' in your tomatoes? I ask because I've learned that using it when your plants don't actually need Magnesium can prevent your plant from being able to 'take up' Calcium thus resulting in Blossom End Rot. I know that you have no problem 'correcting course' if you discover something your doing is not what you thought but I couldn't find an UPDATED video since your 2014 one talking about the use of this chemical.

      For any pepper yes. For Roma, though a determinate, you would just have to make sure you keep up on the watering. I recommend a 10 gallon for determinate tomatoes. 15-20 for indeterminate. You have to imagine how big they will be when mature.

    • @BJ-fj6jw
      @BJ-fj6jw 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For regular pots I was overwatering. Drowning plant. Try poking finger in soil for moisture. Or look at drainage holes of pot. If soil dark, most likely sufficient water. Think a lot of my problems come from overwatering. Will experiment with Rusted Garden recommendation of felt pots. (Can't really overwater because of porous pot material). Makes sense. Good luck!

    Why my tomato plants leaves are getting curly?

  • @musashinagatsubo9574
    @musashinagatsubo9574 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I'm growing tomatoes in grow bags for the first time and one downside I've encountered is during watering, any water that doesn't immediately soak into the soil tends to leak out the sides of the bag. This leads me to need to water daily or the plants wilt the next day.

    • @akersquarteracre8002
      @akersquarteracre8002 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I've had the same issue, usually the cure is to churn up the top layer of mulch and soil especially around the outer edges, followed by a heavy watering. If the fabric pots don't get stuffed with soil well enough from the beginning, it's more likely to shrink when dehydrated, causing the water to run down the sides between the soil and the fabric. Bottom reservior watering works great for fabric pots for this reason.

    Hi Gary, what Is the difference between potting soil and garden soil ?

    • @deborahjohnson7880
      @deborahjohnson7880 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Potting soil is garden soil mixed with peat moss (to hold moisture) and other various items for drainage. Garden soil is dense and has no draining properties and has no peat moss or coco coir (also to hold moisture). If you're buying from Miriclegro do NOT buy Garden soil! it hardens into a rock and has no good properties (drainage or moisture holding). If you're going to buy miracle gro's potting soil in bulk, buy from Bj's or Costco (or make it) . If you buy garden soil, find DIY recipes for Potting Mix.
      Sorry for the long reply I messed up on my plants by going the cheap way and it has affected my plants production.

    I live in Ohio and last week was excessively high temps 90+ degrees fir about 6 days. My tomatoes, which were previously thriving, lost all their yellow blossoms. My watering and fertilizing is good. Did the heat cause the yellow flowers to stop? If so will they start back up? They turned into brown stick-like things that just hang on the plant.

    This is my first year to try to grow in fabric pots. We usually do get quite a bit of rain in the spring, but we really are inundated this year. It’s like a monsoon! The tomatoes that are planted in the bags seem to be doing all right, but one of them has white mold growing on the outside of the bag….only on one side of the bag. I’m not sure what to do about this, whether I need to try and repot the plant, whether to try and segregate it to keep the mold from spreading ( if it would), or what. As much rain as we’ve had, I still have to water in the fertilizer, so when I had the water hose out (which does have a hose-end filter), I sprayed it off, and it looked like it just washed off, but then I noticed the next time I was out there that it’s back. Any ideas what to do about this? Thanks for all your many instructional videos. I’m a long-time subscriber.

      Outside of the bag is normal and wont hurt anything. Moss will grow too. Since the fabric holds moisture, moss and algae grow on it.

    Hi! I'm looking for some information on growing tomatoes for flavor/sweetness. I don't mean in terms of variety. I'm convinced that growing conditions have an impact on flavor. I've used several methods over the years and some seasons, the same variety turns out amazing and other times quite bland (hydroponic growing being the worst, but even soil growing seems to vary year to year with the same variety). You've made a video on just about everything...growing for fruit size, growing for production, but I don't see any videos on growing tomatoes for flavor. Am I missing it somewhere?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You cant easily influence flavor but lots of watering and rain can sometimes diminish flavor do to lots of water intake. Consistent soil prep and watering fixes that. But I dont know of any specific way.

    Hi Gary. Wondering if the tomato roots come out the bottom like you’re saying they do on the sides. and it seems that this would. make it impossible to move them without damage? 2nd question. I bought an heirloom chocolate tomato from Costco. It’s finally doing really well. It gave me a few golf ball sized tomatoes that blushed so I picked them and brought them inside to finish. Now, two weeks or so later, it is loaded with tomatoes, all getting pretty good sized and all green. I’m guessing that it is a determinate from what you said about determinates growing and then giving all their ripe tomatoes more or less at the same time. can you tell me if heirlooms tend to be Determ. or Indeterm? I not long have the tag that came with it. Thanks.
