Homestead Garden Design: Covering Septic Tank Lids - Container Flowers, Using Pairs & Symmetry

- Many of us have septic tanks and have to deal with the lids. This is how I designed a way to cover them but kept it simple so the elements could be moved when I have to get to the tanks. I use pairs, symmetry and a color scheme to plant the area out.
Metric Conversion
1 Inch = 2.54 Centimeters
1 Foot = 0.3048 Meters
1 Gallon (US) = 3.78541178 Liters
1 Fluid Ounce (US) = 29.5735 Milliliters
1 Tablespoon (US) = 14.7868 Milliliters
1 Teaspoon (US) = 4.9289 Milliliters

That is prettier than mine. I built a low profile wooden bed frame around mine. Weeds love that area so I let them grow there. Bees love my ugly, native weeds. I got tired of fighting weeds. My house came with underground septic lid. You gave me an idea for a wooden well cover, to cover the old concrete sticking out of the ground at my mom’s place. Something like a crate that can be tipped over to get to the well. Keep potted plants on top. I guess it’s about two feet above the front lawn. It is round. ☺️ It looks like a tunnel entrance now. If you drill holes in the side instead of the bottom you can save some water in the pot. I drill mine a few inches up. The potting soil will wick up the water and keep your pot moist. Been doing this for years.

Hello Gary. I really like your garden fence as seen in previous videos. Could you do a video on how it was built and what materials were used? I really need to replace the fencing to my garden.
Ill put it on my list. I designed it and had it built. Pretty much how you see it for materials but the key was vinyl squares 1 inch or so, to keep the rabbits out. It has been solid.

Make the “ Hummingbird Nectar “ 64 Oz of water, 4 cups of sugar or use (organic sugar is BEST) warm solution in a large pot, until the sugar dissolves, don’t boil the mixture. Store left over mixture in the refrigerator .

Looks great. What are your thoughts on using Trex type decking instead of wood that may have to be repainted and/ or repaired over time?
Im not against it for this for sure. It makes sense. Today it is pretty beat up looking but fits the decor of a homestead.

sorry i missed the video of your building the cover , what is under the box. I have been told i need ot insulate this type of lid from Freezing and we are only in central ontario canada. -15 to -20 C is our cold winter months and the tank is no more then a few inches below the surface.

I like the symmetry. We don't have a septic system where I live. I'm thinking back to all of the places that I've lived over the years and I just don't recall ever having one. I've heard that the grass is always green over the septic system. Is that true or is it just a myth?

Hey so I planted a peach tree realizing I planted it about 4 inches high it was a potted tree in a 5 gallon it was a foot high so about 8 inches of the root ball went in so will there be any problem can I fix it? I mounded some soil up
Mounding it should fix it. Just spread dirt around it.

So I add more peat or in this case coir to my potting mix to hold more moisture. Like about 3 parts pottiing mix, 1 part peat.

How far from the septic leach field should my vegetable plants be?
So I never found a rule. If felt the depth was deep enough and not a worry. A future over flow could be concern but I just maintain them.

Draw a line down the middle and exact design on both sides. Symmetry is the white squares and objects are pairs. And if you slide the squares down to sit diamond shape, the objects fill symmetrical spots. The items are moved opposite for appeal. Thanks
