  • All the steps for caring for your container determinate tomatoes at mid growth. I show you how to stake and prune them. I show you how I top dress the containers with organic fertilizers and worm castings and well as water them in with fish emulsion. This is everything you need to do to get them ready for great production.

    Gary, I really appreciate your videos. As someone who just recently got into gardening, they have been a valuable resource. Two weeks ago I bought two tomato plants. Now I have 50 plants, read three books, and watched hours of videos. I'm certainly learning, but it seems like every answer uncovers more questions. The reason I really like your videos is that you are really good at explaining the ideas instead of just saying what you do. They have really helped me understand so many things that were confusing to me.
    Something that I'm really curious about your thoughts on is the fabric container pots. They seem interesting, but I figure there is a good reason why I have never heard you mention them. Thank you for everything.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep. There are 1000 roads to growing. Pick the one you like the most and modify. Conditions vary garden to garden. Fabric is fine. I just actually never bought them. And am just using up what I have. I also like the terracotta color. Black fabric bags attract too much heat in my area come mid summer. If they had terracotta fabric... I'm in.

    I watched Hollis and Nancy and He said they start both indeterminate and determinate together, they grow the determinate because it produces tomatoes earlier while the indeterminate get started, so it extends their tomato eating time. I never thought of it that way so I will be growing them both from now on. I LOVE TOMATOES! thnx for the info. I am just doing my research and learning more.

      I use the fish fertilizer because of the amino acids, micro-nutrients and other benefits of ocean caught fish, the stuff I use also has kelp. It stinks to the high heavens but is cost effective to use. I mostly use Neptunes by the gallon, and I discovered a cheaper fish fertilizer (Just Scentsational) on Amazon that is priced around 16 for a gallon.

    Superb video! I'm only growing determinates this year, mostly indoors under lights so it was helpful to know that some light pruning and twine tying to stakes is helpful. Also, I didn't realize that tomatoes can absorb water-soluble fertilizer through their leaves. I'm assuming that also means you can spray a weak CalMag solution on the leaves as well. Keep us posted on your determinates. I'm always looking for another variety to try.

    HELP: I have issues with my determinate caused by a number of mistakes. I originally had it in a 2.5 gal container. It grew to about 4 ft tall and made 3 fruit. Two of them had blossom end rot. I then moved the plant to a 5 gal container and removed the two tomatoes with blossom end rot. Its been a week since I moved it to the 5 gal container. Not seeing any new flowers but the plant leaves have always looked healthy. The one tomato I have left looks good but is still green and doesnt seem to be ripening.
    What should I do at this point? Is there any saving the plant? I live in hot texas btw where weather can reach 100 degrees. There were a couple other flowers when the original tomatoes grew but they didnt bloom anything. Would pruning the one tomato help the roots grow into the new pot? Should I remove old flower formations?
    Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, dependent on plant but that is a general rule that is okay to follow. Flower and fruit are often close like with these plants. And generally speaking #3 is just ongoing water soluble feedings. But as I like to teach, adapt to your preference. Lots of ways to do it.

So the zones are crazy and often dont make sense even here but for me... I am in Maryland. East coast (more northern) of the US where we get 4 seasons. So we have frost showing near the end of October and frost chance early May. Our ground freezes and couple an inch or in late December, January and February. LOL a long winded way to describe it but that is more valuable than saying zone 7. Do you get frost and freeze of any sort? If not your are more like our southeast area.

Regarding “grow bags” / fabric pots, can you leave them filled with soil throughout the winter? This is my first time growing determinate tomatoes ( Betalux, Cream Sausage, and Minibel ... all from Baker Creek) and have been wondering how the "how-to's" were different from indeterminate. Determinate is recommended for my 7500 ft elevation. I started mine indoors, transplanted them into 3 gallon buckets, and I already have lots of flowers and lots of tomatoes coming on. I have been bringing them in most nights because our night temps have been in the upper 40s, a couple of nights in low 50s.

      Jackie, as you can tell from the responses you have already received, this is a highly debatable issue. Gary doesn't mind chemical fertilizers. So I assume he would say yes. I fall into the group that prefers natural fertilizers. So I would use a compost or worm casting tea. Fish fertilizer is another good one...but quite high in nitrogen so you need to be careful that you don't create a situation where you have lots of follage and no fruit.

    I am attempting to grow my first tomato plant, which is a determinate Ace 55. It's like having a first child, as I am learning as I go, and I loved this video. I think I staked my plant too close, and now have a small dark area where it was up against the stake (which I just removed after watching this video). I also had it in a tomato cage, and it seems rather crowded at the top third with the leaves on top of each other, so I plan to change to your method. My question: I have been using Alaska liquid fish fertilizer, but didn't realize I could pour it over the top of leaves, as I was under the impression that the leaves don't like to get wet. (Again, continuing to learn.) My plant and the pot is about the same size as what you were working on. You said you were using a gallon as you fertilized, but then you fertilized two plants. Is that per plant?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The leaf and getting wet is kind of a myth. Diseases will spread no matter what and rain soak the leaves. The Gallon can cover many plants. A quick leaf soak if you want and about 5-10 second pour around the base. Thats plenty. Good luck

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      Yesssss. Over feeding is an issue and can look like under feeding and people then and more fertilizer. Low NPK numbers every 10-14 days. Less is better. If you notice any yellowing you can give them a little more. But if you stay on a routine, it usually works.

    Thanks for all your info! I really appreciate your content. I have a few containers with tomatoes and chilis and are wondering the following concerning liquid fertilizing:
    1. I have seen advice from others that change NPK ratio during bloom, lowering N and raising PK. Do you think there is any point in changing NPK ratio during bloom? I know you dicuss Calcium and BER in several videos, but how about NPK? Here you give fish emulsion with a 3-1-1 ratio. In other videos you recommend a balanced ratio like 5-5-5 or 10-10-10, but I'm not sure if you recommend it through the whole life cycle?
    2. I have two sub-irrigated containers for two tomato plants. How would you go about fertilizing? Putting liquid fertilizer in the water reservoire or directly on the soil? Would nutrient uptake by the plant differ in any way?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So there is truth that but I find it a bit complicated in timing. FE is pretty low but it supplies what is needed. The bottom line is if the NPK is there and not depleted it doesnt matter significantly. However when you increase to higher levels you do see changes but not as much as you might think, if you always have nutrients avaialble at low levels. I found reducing nitrogen was key as to reduce the number of leaves on my tomatoes for disease reasons and for peppers as it does shift them into prodcution of fruit and flowers and less leaves. The reason I went to recommending a 5-5-5 is it just simplifies things. I would water the plants and top of soil with your water soluble and pick one that has nitrogen equal to or lower that NPK when plants are mid size. That is close to enough for the idea you are describing. The bases is plants grow naturally in composted materials, the NPK in compost is well below a 1-1-1 but a constant supply. Compost grown plants are always spectacular.

    • @simonpileborg4623
      @simonpileborg4623 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the answer. That sounds reasonable. So from what I can gather, in good pre-mixed fertilized soil I can go from a fairly equal ratio to a slight increase in PK during mid-size / early bloom. It's unfortunate I don't have enough plants to do a real test myself on the idea.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep that is a good summary. I do like eperiments too. If you ever get there try a container of 50% real compost. It really is an eye opener. I wish I could make more but I cant so I supplement.

    First year doing a determinant tomato in a 5 gallon bucket- a bush early girl. It was looking and doing amazing but then we got such heat and humidity that many many blossoms didn’t fertilize- PA Zone 6. We’ve gotten 9 tomatoes off the plant with 7 on the plant turning green now but that’s it. I can count 23 blossoms that didn’t set fruit. So disappointed.

    Is it ok to place the container tomatoes this close? I can't see spacing containers 24-36 inches apart. I would have no room. My tomatoes had about 12" on each side last year and did surprisingly well in the hot and humid weather. But it could have just been beginners luck. I want to make sure I'm not spacing then too close, but I always hear 24-36" and I can't do that. Yours look pretty close.
