I agree, a blue level meter on a channel being fed by loopback would be fantastic. Go a step further and make an entire color pallet available where you could select any other color aside from the standard green being used by the regular i/o
Yeah, Barry you’ve been doing us all a serious solid by getting technical on routing. As somebody who uses multiple interfaces and a Pulse 16, I appreciate this video very much. And i hope i’m not the only listener who has wasted actual hours with eyes closed and my chin in my hands trying to think through routing solutions in my head. Please don’t let me be the only one …
Awesome! Big Thanx, Barry!! I was just twisting my mind over capturing some of those 'Isolated90s Tracks' from YT into my DAW... BEFORE they get striked and taken down.. AND here You came with the proper solution (I'm TRYING to figure out Total mix for a couple years now...). MUCHAS GRACIAS!!!
Thank you Barry!! I understood what you were talking about. You are correct. The second you click that loop back feature it should show all of the signals in another color so it is easy to follow what is being loop backed.
I like the idea of changing the color of the meter on the loopback input (MADI 31/32) in your example. If RME hasn't already thought of that, it is a great suggestion. They may however have reasons for not doing it. I don't know. I wouldn't necessarily call it a FAIL. Great video and really helpful explanations. Watched all three of them and learned a lot. Thank you.
Another informative presentaion, keep them coming. I use loopback quite frequently. Looking forward to your Tegelar Creme review.....I've been using one for some time and love it!
Thanks for explaining the fundamentality of TotalMix. I’ve only needed it active to drive adat audio i/o from my Digiface interface. I realize I won’t be able to utilize all of this info since the Digiface has no internal DSP, but I can see where Loopback will be tremendously helpful routing signal around my studio. Cheers!
Thanks for all the TotalMix videos. You’ve done a great job and I say this as a happy UFX owner for many years. The point you made here about not seeing I put levels of some sort during a loop back is spot on and this caused me much frustration in the learning process. We really could use some sort of indication of what the loopbaback routing is doing. Your suggestion was excellent. Thanks again for the whole series!
Edited for clarification: At the end of the day, it's easiest to think of all the faders in the input section (top row) to be SEND levels...to the selected output. So instead of thinking about the input faders as volume faders, you're starting with all the faders all the way down, then you push them up as the send level into the output that you're currently working on. So if not thinking about it as a send, then it's simply a "mix for the selected output." So turning the fader to nominal gain (0db) would send the entire signal to that output, vs sending a little, etc. Even if technically, it's a volume fader for that specific output, it's easier to think of it as a send, since you're sending the signal to the output, the more you push the fader up. And all the way down means not sending it at all to that output.
@United South Enterprises LLC those are FX sends - click the wrench icon, it expands, and you'll see an FX Send knob. That little fader you're describing and the FX Send knob control the same thing. The main faders are send levels to the outputs that are selected and showing under each fader. Which is why they are all turned down by default. So that you only push the fader up to add it to the selected output.
@@SomebodyPickaName Bro do you know what a send is? Used for? Sends are entirely used for side chaining or sending to reverb etc… You clearly haven read the manual or understand the signal flow of total mix. All input channels run to AN 1/2, the fader is just to listen to your input audio if you want, if you have a mic and turn the fader down you won’t hear your mic. You’re saying the inputs are sending audio to the outs makes no sense. All channels are routed to the master just like any DAW.
Use loopback all the time but, currently have my total mix set on DAW mode. Waiting for your thjoughts on the Creme, It's in my mastering signal chain and in my opinion, brings just the right stuff!
Page 87 of the UFX+ manual explains the loopback feature. In your example using MADI to feed itself, the loopback is functioning precisely how the literature describes the loopback feature should function. What it doesn't explain is that a potential feed back issue can occur from adjusting the hardware input fader and activating the channel, especially with compression. Of course this is all as clear as mud because TotalMix appears to be a mixing board due to the faders. It is so not a mixing board as you have pointed out. Cheers!
I couldn't agree more about the metering. In fact, I would rather they just allow you to deal with looped back audio exactly as if it is physically connected, ie normal metering and the ability to route to the rest of the mixer. It would be great for submixes in certain settings. RME said they are worried about feedback, which is valid. But just listen to Barry. Don't turn up the hardware input faders until you are ready!
Hi Barry, what is your workaround to the issue that Cubase/Nuendo will change the volume of fader in TotalMix while in Direct Monitoring mode. When you turn your Control Room knob to Control the level of your speakers ,it'll also change to the level of the input fader you're tracking on (if monitor is on). Both RME AND Steiberg are aware of it (spoke to both today)
Hey Barry. I'm attempting to directly record computer audio into my DAW via ADAT inputs 1/2. I'm getting signal, but I can't get it to stop feeding back when Loopback is on. Anything that eliminates the feedback also mutes the signal. I realize this question may be a little dumb... hopefully the answer will be too!
Not sure if you've done it yet, but you've mentioned in the first video on how to use ARC USB. I just got mine, so would love it if you can create another training session on setup and use cases for it. I want to use it with TotalMix, but I don't want to have the TotalMix window open in order for the functions on ARC USB to work. Hope you'll consider; thanks for the series!
@@BarryJohns Great on the video. Yes, I was thinking that I should not need the window open, but I think it's because I get a window when it launches at startup of the firmware update. I'm hoping that once I install it, the window will close after startup.
@@BarryJohns Update: I just updated the firmware; it was easy. Did a restart, TotalMix window window opened and closed, ARC works....beautiful! Thanks again and hope the ARC video will percolate in time!
Great explanation. Per the previous vid, you did not show the matrix on loop back. I'm considering RME products integration. For the price and quality for these price-points they seem like a solid quality backward and forward compatible supported addition. Based on my understanding of this solution the loop back should populate in the matrix despite no level light or any indicator led. This is obviously an oversight on RME dev. That's a simple fix on their C++ end. I concur on your advice. Please advise. Thanks!
you don't need another daw to record audio from nuendo and your voice. just use control room, send to a separate output the whole mix and set your talkback to permanent activation, but be sure that talkback deactivates when you press play or record. then you can use that separate output on your OBS or screen recording software .
barry is there any advantage of a ferrofish MADI 16 going into a UFX III vs a ferrofish ADAT 16 going into ADAT of a UFX II ? Or is it just about having spare channels...?
Hey Barry Nuendo/cubase comes with built in loudness meters, as you know pro tools doesn’t! I have both. Can I route pro tools audio into nuendo and use it for metering rather than buying a nugen meter for pro tools as I also have a ufx? Love to know your feelings here. Mostly mixing for post! Thanks Richie
Yes, I fl have demonstrated how to route to different DAW’s in several videos. I have to do it whenever I’m demoing gear in one DAW then routing the output of that DAW to another.
Thanks Barry, I watched session 1 and 2 but I still can't figure out how to get my second headphone running. I still only hear 1.I use the firefase 802FS
I have question for you Barry, or anyone else for that matter: I use analog summing while mixing, in Cubase Pro 13, and have recently upgraded from a Presonus Quantum 26x32 to the Fireface 802fs. When I'm analog summing/ mixing, and return the summed mix back into Cubase via Fireface analog 1&2, I completely loose all controls from the Cubase control room. No meters, but worst of all, not able to utilize my analysis plugins, especially my reference plugin called Reference 2, which is extremely valuable. I can only insert plugins now on the actual input channel of Cubase, not ideal at all, as for instance, when I use Sonarworks room correction, that curve would then be captured on my final "print" of the summed mix. Surely there's a workaround for this in Totalmix? I've tried both Full mode and daw mode, and loose the Cubase metering and control room on both. This is very disheartening!
Is there a practical reason that the software changes the routing channel display for all of the channels when you set it for one? Does it serve a purpose? I mean you’d think it’d be more useful if it simply showed the current routing for that channel and if you’ve routed to several destinations as you demonstrated in an earlier video, showed the currently selected/active one (the one which the fader etc. is currently controlling).
I've watched all three series, I'm half way through the manual, and I can't figure out how to get the mic input(input 1 and 2) to go out to the head phones (with effects applied). Very confusing interface indeed!
Is it a good idea to use voicemod, voicemeeter (Rerouting with virtual cables), totalmix and equalizer apo together? While having the Babyface fs pro. Can anything be replaced by the other?
I don't find it confusing that there is no level on the physical 31/32 inputs because that is a fact. You've got input only on the software playback 31/32. Why would it show level on a totally different input? I think the problem is that you're seeing the inputs and outputs as part of the same channel as on a physical console, which is not the case at all here. You've got 32 hardware inputs, 32 software inputs and 32 outputs. Some of those share the same number but that doesn't mean anything really.
Would this be a valid approach for re-amping channels partricularly through something like my Cranborne 500ADAT. Especially if I don't want to add physical patch panelling to my studio rig? I.e. leave a 500 channel set up on the output of say ADAT 1/2 but then loopback from IO 3/4 to ADAT/1/2 when resessioning my guitar layer?
My direct monitoring isn't sounding good enough as it does not feel like it is open and loud. What should I do ( I own a babyface pro fs) and please let me know how should I stop direct monitoring and use DAW monitoring.
Thanks for those very helpful videos on TotalMix! But personally I think it is absolutely correct that the physical inputs don't show a level in the case shown here - because that's a fact. So what if you DO have a signal coming in at MA31/32 but you are not using it. At the same time you could have the same exact routing as shown by you. In this case the levels of the software playback MA31/32 and looped outputs MA31/32 would show the their levels. But if you would also show a blue level on the input MA31/32 then you couldn't see the real signal coming in on the physical output...
Based upon my workflow, the two would never exist at the same time. The only reason I would use available, unused outputs, because I need to do internal routing. So I’m never gonna be in a situation where I’m gonna need to route two sources to the same channel. if a channel is being used or a plan to be used, I simply would just pick another available unused channel. Also color coating them differently, distinguish what it is.
rme should just have virtual channels like any other interface, instead of using existing channels for different purpose. what if i'm using all of my inputs?? also don't understand why they name all daw channels corresponding to physical outputs if they're not tied to them.
