    Hey Barry, I remember watching this last year when you first release this video. At that time I though when I get my analog great in to work with Cubase I want to try this. Now a year later I re-watched the video and setup my RME UCX II to do analog inserts on in and out 5/6. I have been redoing a couple of tracks with my dbx compressor. I find that being able to reach over and adjust a knob is so much easier than tweaking one in the box. I got it right on the first try!! Thanks for the insightful and clear video for doing analog inserts with Cubase. Have a great one!!

    Connecting multiple external midi instruments and being able to have all of them playback in sync is a major topic these days, because lot of people dont want to print audio right away and commit, but there is latency in midi which is very hard to resolve in Cubase and most DAW's, it seems to work really well in Bitwig, but it would be nice to show how to actually measure the delay on each instrument. There is no delay adjustment button in Cubase for external instruments. It would be great to see a video for this issue. Great video as always and this will help a lot of people.

    What a great video, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us Barry. I am seriously thinking of upgrading from a focusrite saffire pro 40 to an RME Babyface pro fs. Its a jump in quality and would use the two XLR's for Kick and Snare and use the 8 pres on the Focusrite for 8 channels in adat for drums. Also thinking of running a tube preamp, albeit a cheap one by Behringer, but will try it as my first hardware piece on Kick and snare, then on my two buss. I can run the single headphone to a 4 channel monitor amp for for drums and vocals if needed. What are your thought Barry or anyone else? In this case, will the Baby be enough for this scenario? Or should I opt for the UCX11. Its $1000 more here in Canada. Thanks in advance. I just upgraded to an I7 24700 with a brand new 6 core PC with 16G of ram and USB 3.2 and windows 11. WIll be retiring by old I7 that is running my old Saffire pro through firewire on Windows 10. Saffire pro in only supported on Windows 7, but runs on 10, although super glitchy. Treated room with absorption at all reflection points, corners, walls and ceilings close to listening positions.

I have one question: I just bought the Klark Teknik EQP-KT as my first piece of analog gear and I set it up properly but somehow I cant use it on my Master track. I think the solution is, that my master is in stereo whileas the EQP is in mono but how do other people use hardware gear in their mixing process? Do I have to buy some kind of converter or so to mix my master in realtime with my EQ?
    Best greetings, your former president

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, your master buss is stereo, so you'd need a second EQP-KT to be able to put them on your master buss. You can use your EQP on other mono tracks, just follow the instructions in the video and you'll be good to go. There is a long thread over at gear space on how to make simple mods to the EQP to get the best performance out if it, you should check that out.

    I watch a lot of your studio talks and I really appreciate you sharing your experience on lots of stuffs.
    This one was very informative as well.
    Could I ask one question tho?
    I do use Protools which only allows the input & output to be identical. How inconvenient! However, I still want to use Protools as I used it for a long time and I got used to it.
    Anyway, I have two outboard converters that will be connected with different digital connection.
    If I connect my outboard DA converter via MADI(Let's say output 33,34), can I still use that signal to my outboard AD converter that's been connected via SPIDF(Let's say input 10,11) if I route the signal accordingly in the RME totalmix?
    My understanding was put hardware insert 10, 11 on the track in protools and have that signal received in the output 33, 34 in totalmix.

    You said that most of the time it is not necessary to adjust the send level of the hw insert in studio one. If I am only using my wa-76 as a compressor insert, then i always need to push the send level because I am afraid to push the input knob on the wa-76. I had times when I pushed the input knob up to almost max. Can I end up pushing the input of the compressor too hard?
    And: Do I need to put my external preamp before going to my compressor? I tried it out and the result was okay, but i introduced extra noise (1073 style preamp) and now I am curious if it's the "right way" (i know, experimenting and listening is the right way :P )

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Input on the WA76 is not a traditional input, it’s the gain reduction that determines how much gain reduction you are doing which is displayed by the VU meter. You the make up the gain reduction by adjusting the output, which is a traditional output. The input is more of a threshold.

  • @leftofcenter4
    @leftofcenter4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok so once the hardware insert is setup we can just record a track with the affect like a plug-in insert. But we would still have the dry unprocessed track in the DAW that we sent out to the analog unit. So we could potentially record multiple takes with that dry track to see which hardware settings works best I am thinking.? Or even swap out to a different hardware processor… ok so I see that using hardware inserts and sends will require a lot more time consuming work arounds that’s the other trade off obviously.

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  ปีที่แล้ว

      You will always have the dry signal until you print a stem of the track which would give you a fully processed track leaving your dry track in place you than then mute and hide in the event you needed to process it again.

    andro here from Sydney Australia, I was wondering if you might be able to help me, I have loaded a session from another user on Cubase 12 still here
    And I’ve lost settings I’ve customized in my set up
    One which is a big deal I use a lot of external hardware 64 in 64 out with external effects compressors, EQs etc
    I lost all the connections
    It’s such a pain to have to do this again simply because I am loading a project not done on my main machine
    Now I’m really worried to load someone’s material in the fear of losing settings.. the worst part is you can’t save it as a preset in the connections for external effects
    Is there a work around or something in the settings so that if I load something it won’t load anything but the project ?
    Thanks a lot

      @@BarryJohns thanks Barry sounds great, if we can do it in a couple of weeks, just having some back pain issues at the moment, but hopefully in a couple of weeks I’m more functional

      I know why I stopped. Hated subscription model, constant upgrades, walled garden vibe and occasionally hostile customer support from Avid. Not sure about Barry though.

    Oh but what about the latency….?

      Manufactures affect that. I have zero issues with latency deep into a mix. A combination of the interface, the interface driver, as well as computer speed.

    Is there some sort of patch bay with BOTH at once, mice/line imput in a way that connecting one would disconect the other so that when things are inside a rack we could manage EVERYTHING without having to disconnect anything at all from the back?

      Yes, search my channel on patchbay s.
