I’ve only worked on music production out of the box and controllers for years. These past couple years I’ve bought a lot of outboard gear and thought I’ve done enough research on certain items. Was I wrong, I’m doing the live and learn thing. Anyways, your videos are inspiring and giving me hope lol I didn’t realize the technical portion of all this is such a pain in the butt. If I have to change it and this moment will come one day , is gone be again RME interface . Yes , RME is expensive but you pay for the quality of the product in every aspect !
I’ve been through many interfaces. I say figure what you are recording is the most important thing. If just vocals. 400 to maybe 700 is an ok price range. Second is, are you mostly in the box, an expensive interface is not needed. If you’re recording bands or have a few outboard gear ie synths, grooveboxes then analog io is important. Also get one no matter the cost that is expandable and is future proof meaning 1st it will last you a long time and 2nd conversion. FYI for vocals I have an Apogee Duet(also I mix with it, for my MPC and Maschine I have an Evo 16 for synth sounds an Audiofuse. Spend money wisely. Thanks Barry I like you opened mindedness on many things. Lastly you have to consider are you and engineer or and music maker, not the same thing even though they meld together a lot of the times.
I'm on Windows because my interfaces are both Firewire. A RME Fireface 800 and a MOTU 896HD. RME still support it with drivers. The MOTU still works well with the last drivers issued but I usually ADAT it into the RME if I need it. Its basically a backup/extra inputs device. sometime I'm going to get a more modern interface and maybe go back to a mac. You make great points in the video, keep up the good work.
You can still use your Fireface with Mac ! I'm on a 2011 iMac , using Sonoma ( open core legacy patcher ) and use a thunderbolt to FireWire 800 adaptor....Works like a charm !
Wow, I am new to looking at recording. New to the start of getting a computer , interface , software etc, So. I am not wanting you to tell me what to get but I will let you know what I am looking at doing, I am a novice saxophone player looking at recording, now I say that. But I have a lot of sheet music and backing tracks , I have my iPhone and my IPad where I have the sheet music and backing tracks, so I guess I can record from my IPAD. But the quality is not going to be great I expect? By the way I wish I would have followed you a long time, I need to going forward, As far asan interface is concerned I have no clue and yes I want an interface to last a long time like the computer I will buy, I have commented and like the RME baby face and I don’t think anyone has a lot of problems with it, at my level. That would be all that I need for a long time, I know that I am rambling and there is not even a question in this. Just confused as to which way to go and to let you know where I am co ing from. Love your channel. I am 63 and want to enjoy playing and maybe get to the point where I can play in a gig or maybe band down the line. Sorry for this long message. Vinny
Thank you for this, sir. I just came across your channel recently and am going back to review prior ones. I appreciate you having a heart to heart conversation with is about what we really need to consider because it's so easy to get caught up in the newest release of a product. While the word "quality" may mean something different to everyone, I've found that in this world of hardware (just like vehicles) I was not accustomed to having a quality build construction AND asking myself "what do I really need it to do and how long will it last for my NEEDS in 3-5 years with the budget I can afford?" You are so right. Have tried a few audio interfaces over the last 10 years yet I've only heard of RME a few weeks ago and it's one of a very small number of manufacturers where someone has stated it can grow with them, drivers are always updated and product support service has survived the test, needs, and growth of time. Now I have to decide between the Babyface Pro FS and the Fireface UCX II. The ability to use an external HD or thumb drive for backup direct is pretty nice and has long term use. It reminds me of that similar capability found in the Sound Devices MixPre units. Still has support and repair if needed. Have a great week and thank you for what you do.
I recently bought an RME UCX2 interface and I have my bedroom studio to reconfigure but as you said Barry, the best bang for buck you can afford! I had an MBox 2 which as you know Digi/Avid stopped providing drivers for :-(((((( so I got my RME!!
Fantastic video with very valuable Information with context. I started out with two channel m-audio on windows pc, moved to Mac and focusrite clarett 8pre (great interface). Now have RME fireface UFX III. My use case changed hence the stepped changes in my journey. Don’t always resonate with what Barry but 9.5 times out of 10 his guidance is on the money !! I'm using Universal Audio on a windows desktop. Yes it have been isues with stability and drivers. About 6 month back i always uninstal all drivers + software before updating new new drivers. Much more stable now.

You’re 💯 right man, when I was with RME years ago with Pc and Mac it was solid as a rock, then I went UA sounded better but it wasn’t solid like RME, I’ve been using antelope audio Orion 32+ gen 3 running 2 of those together with many hardware insert effects and it’s been amazing but I must say it has been a pain a couple of times updating or installing, once that happens everything is ok
Another vote for anything RME ... simply the best option around in my own experience ... can be pricey but genuinely offer outstanding value for money, rock solid and just do the job.
best interfaces are Metric Halo. i went with them 2004, upgraded the cards eventually and today i am running 2 uln8s and a uln2. they sound fantastic, rock solid, also great support.
Thanks Barry , i have my RME Babyface 5 years now never had any isue . German engeenering just great ! I think the new presonus hd8 looks intressting you get studio one pro with it ... Also Audient is a great company and not to expenisve for beginners ...so my top brands are RME, Motu, Presonus , Audient good drivers ...sorry for my english greetings from stuttgart germany ...
I bought my Babyface about 12 years ago. A few years later I wanted to expand inputs and started looking into 8 pre add on units. I got sucked in by the whole "Future of mixing" hype with the Presonus RM 16. It was (and still is with my old MacBook) a great mixer. Trouble is the "Future of mixing" did not take into account the death of Firewire. My Babyface still functions perfectly into my M1 MacBook, thanks TOTALLY to the updated drivers. Given the mic pres are way better than anything Presonus and I only really need 2 at a time, I would now just look at a cheap Behringer unit to expand inputs. My main use was for multi tracking band practices to provide practice tracks for members, minus their part. Barry hit the nail on the head when he said company reputation is Everything.
When I put together my last studio computer I wanted a thunderbolt setup. I ended up buying a Presonus Quantum 2626 Thunderbolt 3 interface, which I love. It works really well wih no problems whatsoever. I set it up in 2021. Presonus seems to have discontinued their other TB3 interfaces in the Quantum series and have come out with some usb interfaces that are called Quantum...I am concerned about continued driver support. So far so good...but longterm?
You nailed it. "I bought this and I'm awesome, so it's awesome" - is a real concept. If you bad mouth gear on here people take it personally! (As you know). Great video as always Barry.
I like interfaces with the blend playback/input control. I find it easy to record voclas with them. But it is only found on small interfaces as far as I know.
I would stay with RME forever if they can remain as robust, consistent and stable (including hardware, software and drivers) as they were from day one. My first RME interface was a Hammerfall DSP Multiface (from around the year 2000). Used it for at least 12 years (switched PCIe cards I think when got the G5 Mac Pros) and eventually tried other brands (usually unsatisfied with the stability), and I eventually came back to RME a few years ago and it just feels like home, a rock solid home that doesn’t need much maintenance.
I'm thinking of the Arturia Audiofuse Studio at the moment. Price just dropped $200 to $800. Opinions anyone? The inserts use unbalanced lines. Should I be concerned about that when I use compressors, EQs, etc.? Checks off a lot of other boxes for me. The MOTU 828 is a finalist as well. Enough ins/outs to hook up all the gear I have. This will be a one time purchase for me. No plans to continually upgrade.
I've been using one for 2 years now. It's been a great interface for me. I like the layout and controls. Plenty of I/O. Spend time getting to know the software, it will give you lot's of flexibility. I also run 8 more mic pre channels in through ADAT just for for my drum setup. Been a stable interface on both Windows and now Mac. Haven't tried it on Linux yet. Every time I think of changing it up, I just don't find anything that would replace it. The mic/inst inputs are on the front, for some that's a deal breaker, but I change mic cables/guitars a lot so I'm ok with that. I've used a stereo compressor and several effect pedals on my inserts without issue, but perhaps someone will give more feedback on that. It's a lot of interface for the $

Then the Motu 828 came out and grabbed my attention. Scanning Sweerwater the other day I noticed the price of the Studio had dropped from 1K to $800. That rekindled my interest. The 4 pres of the Studio over the 2 of the 828 would be an advantage. Now I'm suffering from information paralyzation. Got to pull the trigger soon though and get going. I run a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 + Behringer ADA8000 flawlessly on Windows since 2007 and now I really don't know if there is a way to improve the sound I make upgrading converters. I watch so many videos on TH-cam and read a lot and seems like I missed the train. I'm really lost now, so I'll stick with Saffire till it ruin.
Barry, I wonder if you are still using the Ferrofish Pulse 16 MX? I''m setting up a project studio, outside of my home. And I need a relatively high channel count, but can't spend 2k-4k+ or stretch to Apollo 16s, RME, Antelope Orion, Galaxy 32, Lynx Aurora(N)16 expanded etc... I have quite a few stereo synths, samplers. So with the 16 line-level inputs, with the brace of ADAT inputs, the Pulse 16 is attractive for the price. I'd be using the Ferrofish with 16 channels off preamp inputs coming in at 96k across the brace of ADAT inputs. 8 inputs from my Audient ASP800, and planning to add another 8, by buying another ASP800, or an SSL Pure Drive Octo Pre. So on the preamp channels, wouldn't be using the Ferrofish conversion, that would only be for effects and synths. Many of which are digital and probably not A+ grade conversion anyway. Would you still recommend the Ferrofish, 2 years later?
If you’re a singer like myself it’s all about converter quality ! stay away from cheap interfaces filled with extreme floor noise ‘n a high amount of audio hiss apogee , rme etc is the only way to get pro-grade audio quality !
Aside from the more obvious equipment and software, what do you have in your studio that you consider truly essential to inspire creativity and enhance your work flow during the creative process?
Inspiration for me comes from my guitars. It’s different for everyone. I wouldn’t say any gear inspires me, more that it helps me achieve what I hear in my head.
@@durtcannon No I found a bug in the UAD Amp Sims vs Thundebolt vs Windows. Uninstalling / Reinstalling the plugins would be a waste of time with no logic behind doing that. I'm a software developer. "Uninstall all drivers and software. Re-install again to latest drivers." -- does not apply.
I've got a Focusrite 18i20 1st gen, its been rock solid and as far as i can tell sounds great. But fast forward a few years and there are newer versions with much better spec's and other manufacturers too. So I am left wondering should i uograde or will the difference be negligible. I've no easy way of finding out.
I have an 18i20 2nd gen and can say the same. Been dealing with the same questions and haven’t felt the need to upgrade. I did connect an Audient ASP800 through ADAT to record drums and that combo has been great so far.
I've got an 18i20 2nd Gen too, and it's paired with a 2nd Gen Octopre for a total of 16 inputs. I have a project studio and have worked with many bands and solo artists, and they've all been very happy with the sound of their records. I also don't feel the need to upgrade. I'll probably use that equipment until it kicks the bucket.
What are your thoughts on the new Motu 828? I have a Midas Verona 320 console that I am running several synths through. I know I can buy a digital mixer like the one from Presonus, but to be honest with you, my needs don’t require recall ability. So I’m keeping the mixer, and I’m looking at audio interfaces that can handle that many ins and outs for tracking purposes from the synths and drum machines. Most likely I’ll have to add two adats to it and I already have one so I’ll get the other one. Years ago, I built out a recording set up in a recital hall on a campus using the version two of that interface and it’s still running solid today. That’s what made me consider this unit for my needs.
Went through three Focusrite 2I2 interfaces in three years. At the one year mark, in each of the units, the potentiometers would get scratchy and intermittent. The problem is, all I need is two inputs, and other interfaces in the same price range that I've tried have issues that are as problematic. I've said that to say this. I will never buy another interface under $500. I've spent much more than that on junk that either wears out physically in a year, or has all kinds of compatibility problems. I'm just a hobby user . None of the stuff I've bought gets any kind of heavy use.
still using a focusrite saffire pro 24 , but will upgrage when i get a new machine , bought a neve 88 but sent it back as they store sent me a used one instead of new
I use an old saffire pro 40 but the FireWire drivers stopped working in newer windows and they're not going to fix it. So I run it as adat into an Audient ID22. Had to replace a cap in the audient tho, common problem that causes pops. Works ok after that.
I love your channel BUT.. (and still subscribe to this channel folks, it's invaluable!!)... But this is the VERY rare occasion where I don't feel more prepared after watching. My *dramatic summation: "Do your own research BUT don't rely on company info & specs, TH-camr reviews or "the wrong kind" of user reviews. Instead, rely on commonly discussed issues.. but only if they're fully up-to-date because companies are regurly working on those issues" I really DO understand that the variables make suggestions extremely difficult but there's endless fake "regular people" reviews and that includes exaggerated complaints to hurt competitors. I would've greatly appreciated even generic suggestions **with caveats** in each price/needs range to use as a starting point. Even so, thank you for the treasure trove of help that sets the overall standard for your videos.
Brother try hard to get away from looking for people to tell you what to buy, focus on learning all the things you to consider so “you” make your own decisions.
I bought a universal audio apollo duo 7 years ago and it was fine with windows for that time. Then it started acting up and I needed a new one so I got the x6. Nothing but problems with audio crackles. I didn't want rme because it didn't have onboard dsp for plugins so instead I have ordered a macbook pro and I hope that it solves the issues. If I had stayed with windows I think rme would have been the only option but personally I had not tried it that's just going off reviews. Osx and windows updates can sometimes cause issues with soundcards, it's a mindfeild at that stage. But for the most part I find windows laptops to be complete unstable for music I have certainly learnt that
If you just simply want plugins while tracking and no latency you could use something like gig performer. I still don't know how they do it but it works incredibly well for that purpose. If you want the plugin to tweak the impedance then it wont do that, but no need to buy UAD just for the DSP especially with these newer Macs. You could always get a preamp that lets you adjust the impedance as well but it probably wouldn't be exactly the same as how UAD does it. I'm not exactly sure whats going on there as I've never owned a UA interface. Also after fussing with windows attempting to try and make music I will never go back, mac just simply works.
@seriousbassface yeah when you run huge projects uad is good. 6 cores of uad with 16 cores of Apple cpu is going to be nice. Oh yeah, windows is a no go for audio. I swear latest windows updates just ruined it. But this also does happen with osx at times also. Nice one

Imagine , 10 years ago who would have guessed there would now be excellent microphones that were usb , and didn't need an external interface to run them .
Just acquired a Motu 828 (2024 model). I went for for broke, and I'm hoping quality and driver support will be OK. I must admit most of my research was for the UltaLite MK5, and didn't see much negative about it, but at the store, I just decided to go for a notch up. I had not considered long term support, I'm now kinda worried because of the Focurite and Presonus comments in this vid. Anyone with experience using Motu products ? I would welcome opinions. Thx.

I was considering the Antelope Audio Zen Quadro for £600 and I have a MacBook Pro M3 and my first interface was an M-audio 1 input audio interface which was garbage and then I got a used Gen 1 Scarlett 2i2 but it never worked well on my windows laptop so I sold it and got a Mac and I’m torn between a used UAD Apollo Twin X or the Antelope but I’m so confused because I wish to record guitars and voice over

I downgraded to a SSL 2+ Mk2 from a FireFace 800-was amazing, lasted for years-because new Mac OS doesn’t support it and RME stopped updating the drivers (fair enough, it’s 100 years old). I did this for two reasons: 1. I don’t need all those inputs/outputs; and 2. I can’t stand RMEs horrible UI that makes everything harder to use than I need as a songwriter in my bedroom. It sounded great, but was difficult to use. The user experience of SSL sold me. Was this a mistake? Am I going to notice a loss in audio quality and reliability?
If you were to compare that SSL unit that you have to a baby face pro, you would look at things radically different. I would be the first person to agree that TotalMix with RME is completely illogical. That said once you wrap your head around it, it makes perfect sense and it’s probably the most amazing tool that I’ve ever seen on an interface. I actually have four TotalMix training videos that make it incredibly easy to understand, after you do that, you’ll be blown away with what can be done in total mix. But I too suffered in frustration for far too long.
I was always steered by wanting lots of IO, still haven’t spent more than 1000 usd. I use presonus, they’re ok, can’t complain for the price. Quantum 2626 is a pretty good interface for the the amount of preamps and inputs it has, I use a lightpipe for another 8 inputs. I have this interface ear marked for about 7 years of use and then I’ll reevaluate He ain’t lying about models becoming unsupported, I had two fire wire interfaces that got scrapped because… FireWire is gone now. That is why I marked the presonus for 7 years, I’ll try to get longer out of it, but you don’t know when your interface becomes deprecated
I have an RME UFX 3. I love it but feel like for the money, its really short on analog I/O. So im looking to expand conversion, but at the same level of quality. Having PC limits me - if I had mac I’d probably have just gotten Antelope or Red

Yip, agree. But for people that don't have that budget, I'd put MOTU on the ladder, a rung below RME. Excellent conversion and preamps, even if RME drivers do beat it slightly. But MOTU has been reliable for me, and low latency. And also Audient & SSL are very solid too, also had zero problems. The Ferrofish Pulse 16 is good too, if you need many line inputs, dual ADAT, and expandability to MADI/Dante.
For some reason reason lots on f issues with the Audient ID 44 especially with Ableton. Wow always something with this thing I need something with inserts but looks like I have inserted a lot of trouble shooting into my work flow. Any one else out there . And yes I used the n PC and than to Mac still issues.
I bought a UA Volt 2. Nothing but driver issues. I decided to instal Luna and my UA plugins stopped working. UA is no help. They have tons of videos, but even if you follow them to the letter, things don't work. I uninstalled Luna, reinstalled my interface, and still, driver issues. The unit works, with basic functions, but that's it.
I find the preamps in the Audient ID44MKII excellent and the ability to route in analog hardware compressor into the chain a big plus on the way in. Do you think for someone who mix and master 💯 in the box the converters in the Audient are adequate enough since I'm not mixing or mastering with an analog chain
I don't touch anything from Presonus. They are notorious for discontinuing products and not supporting them. They have made great interfaces but then they replace them.
At 17:22 my mind went straight to my Avid Eleven Rack. They promised to support it until 2024. They QUIT supporting it in 2019. They NEVER released a driver for Apple Silicon which came out in 2020. I don't doubt for one moment that they had the Software Development Kits ahead of the Apple Silicon release. NOW they are selling their new MBOX for 400 dollars less (or giving "free" ProTools Perpetual License). The new MBOX must not be doing well, I figure that will be abruptly orphaned soon.

I built my own computer. It's a PC with a i9 10900 k Overclocked CPU So it can handle a TON... It actually says 20 cores at 5 gigahertz per core LOL. Its an AI overclocking so it is all stable. It runs at 5 GHtz or close to it every time I need a heavy load. That said I have a record track number for my set up since I been adding outboard rack gear to my system. I have a song I am working on with 42 tracks literally tons of everything running on most of them all but vocals I haven't finished yet LOL... BUT I am running a Presonus Quantum 2626. I was going to upgrade but I don't trust the latency of the newer HD interfaces from them. Maybe I might have to soon because I have added 7 pieces of analog hardware all recently. BUT before all this my max was 32 tracks...so to be clear I am running 42 tracks at 96 khtz and its running well below half the Processor usage. Don't ask me how but adding that analog stuff really helps the track count because of so much less plugins I am assuming. Is that stable? No pops...
This is an incredibly easy topic to answer if you’re just getting started sub $300 interface figure out how many inputs you will need being you will no doubt either stop recording or move up. Your initial decision will help with your next decision. Say $400-$1000. How many inputs do you need? We will be connecting a keyboard or mini device to record with. do you need one or two headphones connections $1100 to say 5000 you should have developed enough skill to hear the difference and know what your needs are above five $5000. It’s for the big boys and you probably unless your knees require it should not consider it at $300 250 today you’re getting better converters in your interface then you could have in the 1990s paying $1000 apiece for them. Spend the time developing your skills playing and recording and listen. Learn how to properly mic place for each instrument that requires a mic or vocals by the time you spend $400-$1000 you should have developed your abilities to listen. I have been a self taught engineer for 49 years put in the time do the work and grow as a musician and an audio engineer because no matter the cost of the mic or the interface if you poorly place a $3000 tube microphone connected to a $5000 interface improperly it was sound terrible. Develop the skills and your needs will be paid for by your personal growth do the small stuff to enjoy the rewards along the way enjoy the journey. Jimmy K.
If you’re gonna do a videoof interfaces, you should have some Flippin interfaces you recommend. Complete waste of video. We all know exactly everything you’re saying, but we want to know what actually is worth our money. The highest headroom, the best converters, the best drivers that work with Apple Silicon, that work as a sound card that work well with producing software (Ableton, reason, FL studio), not just pro tools or other tracking DAW’s things, the least amount of latency. these things need to be in the freaking video.

Why don’t you read some of the other comments and you’ll find that you’re on a desert island man. I just don’t understand why people like you behave the way you do it’s just beyond my comprehension. Why don’t you actually watch the entire video and then form your opinion. Just picture me right now just shaking my head shaking my head and saying I feel really sorry for it. I’m sorry, man but nobody made you come to my channel, you chose it and you chose to judge somebody after watching them for two or three minutes I can’t imagine you’d do that with other people in your life. Good video. I have 2 PreSonus 26x32 interfaces daisy chained to a Mac M1 mini. These units have been awesome, but your point on vendors discontinuing products is a very valid point. I just hope I can get 10 years of life out of these units, not from a hardware point of view, but for having drivers supported by the computers I use I look at any equipment directly connected to a computer are disposable assets, with very little residual value. My investments are geared towards standalone analog equipment and microphones.

Also get one no matter the cost that is expandable and is future proof meaning 1st it will last you a long time and 2nd conversion. FYI for vocals I have an Apogee Duet(also I mix with it, for my MPC and Maschine I have an Evo 16 for synth sounds an Audiofuse. Spend money wisely. Thanks Barry I like you opened mindedness on many things. Lastly you have to consider are you and engineer or and music maker, not the same thing even though they meld together a lot of the times.

I'm on Windows because my interfaces are both Firewire. A RME Fireface 800 and a MOTU 896HD. RME still support it with drivers. The MOTU still works well with the last drivers issued but I usually ADAT it into the RME if I need it. Its basically a backup/extra inputs device. sometime I'm going to get a more modern interface and maybe go back to a mac. You make great points in the video, keep up the good work.
You can still use your Fireface with Mac ! I'm on a 2011 iMac , using Sonoma ( open core legacy patcher ) and use a thunderbolt to FireWire 800 adaptor....Works like a charm !

Wow, I am new to looking at recording. New to the start of getting a computer , interface , software etc, So. I am not wanting you to tell me what to get but I will let you know what I am looking at doing, I am a novice saxophone player looking at recording, now I say that. But I have a lot of sheet music and backing tracks , I have my iPhone and my IPad where I have the sheet music and backing tracks, so I guess I can record from my IPAD. But the quality is not going to be great I expect? By the way I wish I would have followed you a long time, I need to going forward, As far asan interface is concerned I have no clue and yes I want an interface to last a long time like the computer I will buy, I have commented and like the RME baby face and I don’t think anyone has a lot of problems with it, at my level. Thank you for this, sir. I just came across your channel recently and am going back to review prior ones. I appreciate you having a heart to heart conversation with is about what we really need to consider because it's so easy to get caught up in the newest release of a product. While the word "quality" may mean something different to everyone, I've found that in this world of hardware (just like vehicles) I was not accustomed to having a quality build construction AND asking myself "what do I really need it to do and how long will it last for my NEEDS in 3-5 years with the budget I can afford?"
You are so right. Have tried a few audio interfaces over the last 10 years yet I've only heard of RME a few weeks ago and it's one of a very small number of manufacturers where someone has stated it can grow with them, drivers are always updated and product support service has survived the test, needs, and growth of time. Now I have to decide between the Babyface Pro FS and the Fireface UCX II. The ability to use an external HD or thumb drive for backup direct is pretty nice and has long term use. It reminds me of that similar capability found in the Sound Devices MixPre units. Still has support and repair if needed.

I recently bought an RME UCX2 interface and I have my bedroom studio to reconfigure but as you said Barry, the best bang for buck you can afford! I had an MBox 2 which as you know Digi/Avid stopped providing drivers for :-(((((( so I got my RME!!

I'm using Universal Audio on a windows desktop. Yes it have been isues with stability and drivers. About 6 month back i always uninstal all drivers + software before updating new new drivers. Much more stable now.
I have Steinberg AXR4U and Apollo x6. The Steinberg is really amazing and the driver is awesome!

You’re 💯 right man, when I was with RME years ago with Pc and Mac it was solid as a rock, then I went UA sounded better but it wasn’t solid like RME, I’ve been using antelope audio Orion 32+ gen 3 running 2 of those together with many hardware insert effects and it’s been amazing but I must say it has been a pain a couple of times updating or installing, once that happens everything is ok
My UA X6 & Twin Fallout/ Drop Computer Crashes ( more so these days ) plus I never was exited about the quality of Conversions

Another vote for anything RME ... simply the best option around in my own experience ... can be pricey but genuinely offer outstanding value for money, rock solid and just do the job.
best interfaces are Metric Halo. i went with them 2004, upgraded the cards eventually and today i am running 2 uln8s and a uln2. they sound fantastic, rock solid, also great support.

I bought my Babyface about 12 years ago. A few years later I wanted to expand inputs and started looking into 8 pre add on units. I got sucked in by the whole "Future of mixing" hype with the Presonus RM 16. It was (and still is with my old MacBook) a great mixer. Trouble is the "Future of mixing" did not take into account the death of Firewire. My Babyface still functions perfectly into my M1 MacBook, thanks TOTALLY to the updated drivers. Given the mic pres are way better than anything Presonus and I only really need 2 at a time, I would now just look at a cheap Behringer unit to expand inputs. My main use was for multi tracking band practices to provide practice tracks for members, minus their part. Barry hit the nail on the head when he said company reputation is Everything.

When I put together my last studio computer I wanted a thunderbolt setup. I ended up buying a Presonus Quantum 2626 Thunderbolt 3 interface, which I love. It works really well wih no problems whatsoever. I set it up in 2021. Presonus seems to have discontinued their other TB3 interfaces in the Quantum series and have come out with some usb interfaces that are called Quantum...I am concerned about continued driver support. So far so good...but longterm?

I like interfaces with the blend playback/input control. I find it easy to record voclas with them. But it is only found on small interfaces as far as I know.
I would stay with RME forever if they can remain as robust, consistent and stable (including hardware, software and drivers) as they were from day one. My first RME interface was a Hammerfall DSP Multiface (from around the year 2000). Used it for at least 12 years (switched PCIe cards I think when got the G5 Mac Pros) and eventually tried other brands (usually unsatisfied with the stability), and I eventually came back to RME a few years ago and it just feels like home, a rock solid home that doesn’t need much maintenance.
RME. King of drivers. Latency under load reveals who was swimming with their pants off when the tide goes out.

Opinions anyone? The inserts use unbalanced lines. Should I be concerned about that when I use compressors, EQs, etc.? Checks off a lot of other boxes for me.
The MOTU 828 is a finalist as well. Enough ins/outs to hook up all the gear I have.
This will be a one time purchase for me. No plans to continually upgrade.
I've been using one for 2 years now. It's been a great interface for me. I like the layout and controls. Plenty of I/O. Spend time getting to know the software, it will give you lot's of flexibility. I also run 8 more mic pre channels in through ADAT just for for my drum setup. Been a stable interface on both Windows and now Mac. Haven't tried it on Linux yet. Every time I think of changing it up, I just don't find anything that would replace it. The mic/inst inputs are on the front, for some that's a deal breaker, but I change mic cables/guitars a lot so I'm ok with that. I've used a stereo compressor and several effect pedals on my inserts without issue, but perhaps someone will give more feedback on that. It's a lot of interface for the $

Scanning Sweerwater the other day I noticed the price of the Studio had dropped from 1K to $800. That rekindled my interest. The 4 pres of the Studio over the 2 of the 828 would be an advantage.
Now I'm suffering from information paralyzation. Got to pull the trigger soon though and get going.

I run a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 + Behringer ADA8000 flawlessly on Windows since 2007 and now I really don't know if there is a way to improve the sound I make upgrading converters. I watch so many videos on TH-cam and read a lot and seems like I missed the train. I'm really lost now, so I'll stick with Saffire till it ruin.

Barry, I wonder if you are still using the Ferrofish Pulse 16 MX? I''m setting up a project studio, outside of my home. And I need a relatively high channel count, but can't spend 2k-4k+ or stretch to Apollo 16s, RME, Antelope Orion, Galaxy 32, Lynx Aurora(N)16 expanded etc... I have quite a few stereo synths, samplers. So with the 16 line-level inputs, with the brace of ADAT inputs, the Pulse 16 is attractive for the price. I'd be using the Ferrofish with 16 channels off preamp inputs coming in at 96k across the brace of ADAT inputs. 8 inputs from my Audient ASP800, and planning to add another 8, by buying another ASP800, or an SSL Pure Drive Octo Pre. So on the preamp channels, wouldn't be using the Ferrofish conversion, that would only be for effects and synths. Many of which are digital and probably not A+ grade conversion anyway. Would you still recommend the Ferrofish, 2 years later?

If you’re a singer like myself it’s all about converter quality ! stay away from cheap interfaces filled with extreme floor noise ‘n a high amount of audio hiss apogee , rme etc is the only way to get pro-grade audio quality !

Inspiration for me comes from my guitars. It’s different for everyone. I wouldn’t say any gear inspires me, more that it helps me achieve what I hear in my head.

I've got a Focusrite 18i20 1st gen, its been rock solid and as far as i can tell sounds great. But fast forward a few years and there are newer versions with much better spec's and other manufacturers too. So I am left wondering should i uograde or will the difference be negligible. I've no easy way of finding out.
I have an 18i20 2nd gen and can say the same. Been dealing with the same questions and haven’t felt the need to upgrade. I did connect an Audient ASP800 through ADAT to record drums and that combo has been great so far.
I've got an 18i20 2nd Gen too, and it's paired with a 2nd Gen Octopre for a total of 16 inputs. I have a project studio and have worked with many bands and solo artists, and they've all been very happy with the sound of their records. I also don't feel the need to upgrade. I'll probably use that equipment until it kicks the bucket.

What are your thoughts on the new Motu 828? I have a Midas Verona 320 console that I am running several synths through. I know I can buy a digital mixer like the one from Presonus, but to be honest with you, my needs don’t require recall ability. So I’m keeping the mixer, and I’m looking at audio interfaces that can handle that many ins and outs for tracking purposes from the synths and drum machines. Most likely I’ll have to add two adats to it and I already have one so I’ll get the other one.
Years ago, I built out a recording set up in a recital hall on a campus using the version two of that interface and it’s still running solid today. That’s what made me consider this unit for my needs.

Went through three Focusrite 2I2 interfaces in three years. At the one year mark, in each of the units, the potentiometers would get scratchy and intermittent. The problem is, all I need is two inputs, and other interfaces in the same price range that I've tried have issues that are as problematic. I've said that to say this. I will never buy another interface under $500. I've spent much more than that on junk that either wears out physically in a year, or has all kinds of compatibility problems. I'm just a hobby user . None of the stuff I've bought gets any kind of heavy use.

I use an old saffire pro 40 but the FireWire drivers stopped working in newer windows and they're not going to fix it. So I run it as adat into an Audient ID22. Had to replace a cap in the audient tho, common problem that causes pops. Works ok after that.

I really DO understand that the variables make suggestions extremely difficult but there's endless fake "regular people" reviews and that includes exaggerated complaints to hurt competitors.

I bought a universal audio apollo duo 7 years ago and it was fine with windows for that time. Then it started acting up and I needed a new one so I got the x6. Nothing but problems with audio crackles. I didn't want rme because it didn't have onboard dsp for plugins so instead I have
ordered a macbook pro and I hope that it solves the issues. If I had stayed with windows I think rme would have been the only option but personally I had not tried it that's just going off reviews. Osx and windows updates can sometimes cause issues with soundcards, it's a mindfeild at that stage. But for the most part I find windows laptops to be complete unstable for music I have certainly learnt that
If you just simply want plugins while tracking and no latency you could use something like gig performer. I still don't know how they do it but it works incredibly well for that purpose.
If you want the plugin to tweak the impedance then it wont do that, but no need to buy UAD just for the DSP especially with these newer Macs. You could always get a preamp that lets you adjust the impedance as well but it probably wouldn't be exactly the same as how UAD does it. I'm not exactly sure whats going on there as I've never owned a UA interface.
Also after fussing with windows attempting to try and make music I will never go back, mac just simply works.
@seriousbassface yeah when you run huge projects uad is good. 6 cores of uad with 16 cores of Apple cpu is going to be nice. Oh yeah, windows is a no go for audio. I swear latest windows updates just ruined it. But this also does happen with osx at times also. Nice one

Just acquired a Motu 828 (2024 model). I went for for broke, and I'm hoping quality and driver support will be OK.
I must admit most of my research was for the UltaLite MK5, and didn't see much negative about it, but at the store, I just decided to go for a notch up.
I had not considered long term support, I'm now kinda worried because of the Focurite and Presonus comments in this vid.
Anyone with experience using Motu products ? I would welcome opinions.

I downgraded to a SSL 2+ Mk2 from a FireFace 800-was amazing, lasted for years-because new Mac OS doesn’t support it and RME stopped updating the drivers (fair enough, it’s 100 years old). I did this for two reasons: 1. I don’t need all those inputs/outputs; and 2. I can’t stand RMEs horrible UI that makes everything harder to use than I need as a songwriter in my bedroom. It sounded great, but was difficult to use. The user experience of SSL sold me. Was this a mistake? Am I going to notice a loss in audio quality and reliability?
If you were to compare that SSL unit that you have to a baby face pro, you would look at things radically different. I would be the first person to agree that TotalMix with RME is completely illogical. That said once you wrap your head around it, it makes perfect sense and it’s probably the most amazing tool that I’ve ever seen on an interface. I actually have four TotalMix training videos that make it incredibly easy to understand, after you do that, you’ll be blown away with what can be done in total mix. But I too suffered in frustration for far too long.
I was always steered by wanting lots of IO, still haven’t spent more than 1000 usd. I use presonus, they’re ok, can’t complain for the price. Quantum 2626 is a pretty good interface for the the amount of preamps and inputs it has, I use a lightpipe for another 8 inputs. I have this interface ear marked for about 7 years of use and then I’ll reevaluate
He ain’t lying about models becoming unsupported, I had two fire wire interfaces that got scrapped because… FireWire is gone now. That is why I marked the presonus for 7 years, I’ll try to get longer out of it, but you don’t know when your interface becomes deprecated
I have an RME UFX 3. I love it but feel like for the money, its really short on analog I/O. So im looking to expand conversion, but at the same level of quality. Having PC limits me - if I had mac I’d probably have just gotten Antelope or Red

Yip, agree. But for people that don't have that budget, I'd put MOTU on the ladder, a rung below RME. Excellent conversion and preamps, even if RME drivers do beat it slightly. But MOTU has been reliable for me, and low latency. And also Audient & SSL are very solid too, also had zero problems. The Ferrofish Pulse 16 is good too, if you need many line inputs, dual ADAT, and expandability to MADI/Dante.
Focusrite 4th gen 18i20 king of kings
For some reason reason lots on f issues with the Audient ID 44 especially with Ableton. Wow always something with this thing I need something with inserts but looks like I have inserted a lot of trouble shooting into my work flow. Any one else out there . And yes I used the n PC and than to Mac still issues.
I have used that interface and it worked flawless for me.

Barry, Antelope is fantastic if you want a legitimate reason for not getting any work done.
I bought a UA Volt 2. Nothing but driver issues. I decided to instal Luna and my UA plugins stopped working. UA is no help. They have tons of videos, but even if you follow them to the letter, things don't work. I uninstalled Luna, reinstalled my interface, and still, driver issues. The unit works, with basic functions, but that's it.
ua interfaces are overpriced and overrated. good marketing though.

I find the preamps in the Audient ID44MKII excellent and the ability to route in analog hardware compressor into the chain a big plus on the way in. Do you think for someone who mix and master 💯 in the box the converters in the Audient are adequate enough since I'm not mixing or mastering with an analog chain
On Macs so no need for any audio drivers (thanks to core audio) which is IMHO the weakest link in your audio chain

I don't touch anything from Presonus. They are notorious for discontinuing products and not supporting them. They have made great interfaces but then they replace them.
At 17:22 my mind went straight to my Avid Eleven Rack. They promised to support it until 2024. They QUIT supporting it in 2019. They NEVER released a driver for Apple Silicon which came out in 2020. I don't doubt for one moment that they had the Software Development Kits ahead of the Apple Silicon release. NOW they are selling their new MBOX for 400 dollars less (or giving "free" ProTools Perpetual License). The new MBOX must not be doing well, I figure that will be abruptly orphaned soon.

I’m on Windows. Had a home studio for almost 30 years. Been through quite a few interfaces. The worse was a Focusrite 8i6. The best is my current which is a RME Babyface Pro FS. It is a rock solid beast

@ I think the MIC pres are quite good. I was using it for lots of VSTs and some guitar as well. Seemed to lack headroom and the latency wasn’t great.

I built my own computer. It's a PC with a i9 10900 k Overclocked CPU So it can handle a TON... It actually says 20 cores at 5 gigahertz per core LOL. Its an AI overclocking so it is all stable. It runs at 5 GHtz or close to it every time I need a heavy load. That said I have a record track number for my set up since I been adding outboard rack gear to my system. I have a song I am working on with 42 tracks literally tons of everything running on most of them all but vocals I haven't finished yet LOL... BUT I am running a Presonus Quantum 2626. I was going to upgrade but I don't trust the latency of the newer HD interfaces from them. Maybe I might have to soon because I have added 7 pieces of analog hardware all recently. BUT before all this my max was 32 tracks...so to be clear I am running 42 tracks at 96 khtz and its running well below half the Processor usage. Don't ask me how but adding that analog stuff really helps the track count because of so much less plugins I am assuming. Is that stable? No pops...

We will be connecting a keyboard or mini device to record with. do you need one or two headphones connections $1100 to say 5000 you should have developed enough skill to hear the difference and know what your needs are above five $5000. It’s for the big boys and you probably unless your knees require it should not consider it at $300 250 today you’re getting better converters in your interface then you could have in the 1990s paying $1000 apiece for them. Spend the time developing your skills playing and recording and listen. Learn how to properly mic place for each instrument that requires a mic or vocals by the time you spend $400-$1000 you should have developed your abilities to listen. I have been a self taught engineer for 49 years put in the time do the work and grow as a musician and an audio engineer because no matter the cost of the mic or the interface if you poorly place a $3000 tube microphone connected to a $5000 interface improperly it was sound terrible. If you’re gonna do a videoof interfaces, you should have some Flippin interfaces you recommend. Complete waste of video. We all know exactly everything you’re saying, but we want to know what actually is worth our money.
The highest headroom, the best converters, the best drivers that work with Apple Silicon, that work as a sound card that work well with producing software (Ableton, reason, FL studio), not just pro tools or other tracking DAW’s things, the least amount of latency. these things need to be in the freaking video.
Obviously, you didn’t bother to watch the video, and why do you feel like you need to be a total jerk, do you have a superiority complex or something? Why don’t you read some of the other comments and you’ll find that you’re on a desert island man. I just don’t understand why people like you behave the way you do it’s just beyond my comprehension. Why don’t you actually watch the entire video and then form your opinion. Just picture me right now just shaking my head shaking my head and saying I feel really sorry for it. I’m sorry, man but nobody made you come to my channel, you chose it and you chose to judge somebody after watching them for two or three minutes I can’t imagine you’d do that with other people in your life. If so, it’s a pretty sad life. I hope you can get past this.
That sounds like a lot of work. Why don't you do all that and make your own video instead of telling someone else to do it for you.

Good video. I have 2 PreSonus 26x32 interfaces daisy chained to a Mac M1 mini. These units have been awesome, but your point on vendors discontinuing products is a very valid point. I just hope I can get 10 years of life out of these units, not from a hardware point of view, but for having drivers supported by the computers I use I look at any equipment directly connected to a computer are disposable assets, with very little residual value. My investments are geared towards standalone analog equipment and microphones.
