    Best walkthrough on this software BY FAR. A bit embarrassed to admit, I've been using Total Mix for 10+ years and did not know half of this stuff. I only knew the minimum to get it to function, but of course sometimes things were changed accidentally and I be driving myself crazy trying to figure out what the heck I did. I now have a much more comprehensive understanding of the where, why, how, etc. Big confidence booster. Thank you, Barry!

    Your teaching is so effective. Slow and patient with a subject a lot of us have tried to relate to traditional consoles, but became confounded because of the unusual approach RME uses. This tutorial is so much needed. Thank you!

    Barry, thanks for putting these together. I learned a few things in this first one and will probably learn much more in the next one. I have the RME UCXII and a Focusrite Clarett+ 8 Pre. I use the 8 Pre for drums and the RME for everything else. I have a couple of mic pres and am just getting started with the 500 series gear. I hope you will cover hardware inserts. I am currently using Cubase Pro 12. I have been trying ProTools Artist, but it has been crashing on my M1 MacBook Pro on Sonoma. We will be taking a look at Session Two after I rest my brain a bit.
    Thanks again for all of the hard work. I still owe you a beer at Captain Tony's in Key West.

    Barry, I've had my Fireface 800 for probably 20 years or so now, and I never understood TotalMix, but somehow got it to do what I needed it to do.
    As I was chasing down a latency problem on a new mic on a separate input, I tracked it down to my ignorance of TotalMix, which brought me here.
    Thank you, thank you, thank you for putting this together. I know more about TotalMix now than I ever have, and that's just your first video! On to the next one!

    Hi Barry. I've been using TotalMix with Nuendo for 20years now and so many people I know who use RME don't understand the mixer. I am so happy you are opening up this amazing tool to so many people.
    Thank you
    A hidden feature in Nuendo with RME is the "Direct Monitoring" option that allows Nuendo's control room to control the TotalMix Mixer. This allows for Zero Latency Monitoring with the control room inside Nuendo. This only controls the channels assigned to the control room. Take a TotalMix snapshot before you start experimenting for the first time. this also works in "Studiomode" .
    Nuendo >Studio > Studio Setup > ASIO UFX+ > Direct Monitoring option.
    Enjoy

    It definitely takes a while to master it, (I learned a bit here even though i’ve used it for many years). But it sure is amazingly powerful once you figure it out. RME is the only interfaces I would even consider these days. I currently have an 802 after selling my original UFX for one of the old Apollo’s and regretting it. The new UFX III’s have me drooling. Maybe someday soon. Cheers, thanks for this Barry!

    You are absolutely correct about totalmix being illogical. You are also correct about warm audio quality control issues. I bought a brand new wa73 eq and the wa47. The wa73eq had scratchy sounding pots on the eq from day one. The wa47 sounded good but developed a hum three years later that I couldn't fix. (Subscribed)

    A fab tutorial. And even better it is a series! Liked, subbed and will certainly frequently revisit. I dig my RME interfaces but TotalMix has always been a puzzle. Yes, there is a handbook, but I prefer trying things out. And this is where things go south as TotalMix is not intuitive. And once you mess around with the faders, well, as Barry clearly says: Don‘t do that! Great job, Barry - looking forward to finally unlocking the power of TotalMix!
    Question: can you pls do a dedicated session on how to use hardware effects in TotalMix ?

  • @enewhuis
    @enewhuis ปีที่แล้ว +1

    TotalMix while using an Octamic XTC is another thing I've been struggling with since there are so many options to send the control signal to the mic pre extension device however the great thing about it is the ability to control all the 48V, AutoSet, pad and of course gain from TotalMix on the additional mic pres. I've had a few problems with the UFX and Octamic somehow getting out of sync with one at 192 and the other at 96 or some other combination. I've also noticed maybe, not quite sure yet, that it is best to have TotalMix running before powering on the interface and any aux devices. This may be pure luck but it seems to prevent some configuration sync issues.

  • @FLOSPhotographer
    @FLOSPhotographer ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think one of the MOST confusing aspects of TotalMix for someone who has never used it is the fact that looking at the TOP ROW (inputs), the BOTTOM number(s) represent how that INPUT is routed. If you switch that input routing to another OUTPUT, your faders will reset, and you are then looking at how that INPUT routes to another channel / output. It will switch the view for EVERY input...so you have to pay attention to the routing, because EVERY input is routable to EVERY output simultaneously (if desired). It's also confusing that RME placed the section labels at the BOTTOM of the row instead of the top...but that is just a nit pick.

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I go over this in depth in the next video

    • @PopsMartin
      @PopsMartin ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Like typical channel strips in mixing desks it's a top->down design in the top you see wha's going into the channel strip and in the bottom you see where it's routed to after the fader. Makes perfect sense to me the way it is.

    • @FLOSPhotographer
      @FLOSPhotographer ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@PopsMartin The signal flow makes sense...putting a label at the bottom instead of at the top ("Hardware Inputs, Software Playback, and Hardware Outputs" is what I am referring to) is confusing at first.

    For S/PDIF coax, you don't need a converter box. All you need is one digital (110 Ohm) XLR female->RCA and one digital (110 Ohm) XLR male->RCA cable ... and set "AES Format" in MADIface Settings to "Consumer". Also you can rename channels with doubleclick on their names above the channel faders.

    • @BarryJohns

    For me it's very important to have an audio interface with dsp mixer like total mix fx.
    It is very helpful when streaming and recording because it doesn't push the cpu of your computer.
    Rme babyface is one of my choices for next audio interface and one of the reasons is totalmix.

    Great videos. For me, Total Mix wasn't TERRIBLE to learn, but the loopback and how it ends back up on an analog input is always confusing to me. Also, the BabyFace Pro in particular doesn't seem to work well with OBS for live streaming. I don't know if that's just the BF, or if it's all RME interfaces. You have to download and install two other applications to "route" the audio in MacOS to get it to show up in OBS. Very frustrating. Other than that, I wish they would have allowed use of the DSP in TotalMix for the BF to have compression. I was disappointed when it didn't.

    Regarding the playback fader, is it best practice to leave that all the way up for a basic setup, then adjust volume via the output or in DAW/system, or can you lower the playback fader as an effective way to limit system audio? In my setup, I usually have that slider about 1/2 way to 3/4 up depending on content, but my output slider is pretty low too - yet the levels all work out and I haven’t had any real issues so far, just asking for best practice. I typically keep my output between -18 and -22.

    is there any pack of vocal presets for the Total mix? the UCX only have one for reverb and other for delay

      Hugo, not that I’m aware of, but that said, plug-in presets are not your friend unless you made them. Learn each part of the process, presets can be a crutch.

    It sounds a bit like my new endeavor to learn to make beats on the Akai MPC X. It is so different than using a DAW to make music. The workflow is entirely different.
