    Just had an idea for increased deadlines of combat. Instead of surprise effecting initiative have it reflect how your defense isn’t quite up. Both sides (or each character) rolls 1d6, add the result to attack rolls made against you during the first round. In this case at best everyone gets a +1 to hit you first round, potentially you were really caught off guard and people get +6 to attack you first round. This goes for enemies as well, so they die faster first round as well

      Ya know...? This ain't a half bad idea. I might "nerf" that down to d4 to give my players a little mercy, but I really like this idea. Thanks.

    The weapons speed , size, damage always made sense to me. A weapons compendium is in my collection along with 2or 3 castle books. Never used large weapons.

    You can find the Core Rules Kickstarter here: kickstarter.brwgames.com
    Also, there is a mistake in the example of surprise. It should be orcs roll 5, PCs roll 2, and the PCs get +3 initiative penalty.

    Thanks Grognard! We’ve been rolling 1d6 surprise checks playing BECMI. I like your change - use the difference in our initiative roles, more fun, less arbitrary. Backed the Kickstarter for hard copies of both books!

    If surprise happens on a 1-2, why are the PCs (in the example) surprised on a roll of 3?

    • @GreyhawkGrognard
      @GreyhawkGrognard  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      That was a misstatement on my part. Example should be orcs 5, PCs 2. PCs get +3 initiative penalty.

    Your combat system seems well thought out. I will probably steal a few ideas, at least to play with. I am still going to ignore weapon speed.

    Good solutions that seem to strike a nice balance between a fast, smooth table experience and a bit of crunch/simulation/realism. Interesting to handle morale with a single die instead of a distribution. How do you deal with multiple attacks/round, e.g. high-level fighters? Do the additional attacks happen in the final segment?

    • @GreyhawkGrognard
      @GreyhawkGrognard  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It depends on how many attacks/round. For example, if you get two attacks per round, one of them is treated as if you rolled a 1, and the other is rolled normally.

    I’ve already got 3 friends on board for an “adventures dark and deep” campaign starting this summer using my childhood 1E campaign world! Waiting to hear from 8 other folks… when does the new version actually drop? I backed the kickstarter.

      Absolutely. DriveThruRPG makes inserts for GM screens, and the current ones will be updated with any changes.

    Ok... I finally bit. Maybe some nostalgia, but I've always missed 1e in terms of having quick combats and being able to clearly 30+ room dungeons in a couple of sessions but never been able to go back to 1e in terms of its clunkiness. Looking forward to see a more modern take on the rules. I'll just need to convince some folks to agree to try playing it.

    Hey Joseph, you stole my idea I invented in 1984! 😉
    The difference is that I use a D12 instead of a d10 for initiative. A fighter having 3 attacks in two rounds rolls a d8 and a fighter that has 2 attacks per round rolls a d6. Magical weapons substract their bonus to the speed factor. (I'm paying campaigns where magical weapons are very rare) but the minimum is always 1. Suddenly that dagger +1 makes it a good weapon against that two handed sword!
    But adding the weapon speed factor creates a very different feel in the combat. Suddenly someone

    Ah, I'd love to back it, but 60$ for both pdfs... this would strain my budget for May too much :( I guess I'll stick with the first printing for a bit more. Good luck!

    How does to-hit work?

    • @GreyhawkGrognard
      @GreyhawkGrognard  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Just like in regular D&D. There's a table that gives you the target roll based on your class/level, you need to roll that or higher to hit. With modifiers, of course.
