I enjoy all of Grayhawk Grognard videos
A resurgent Horned Society is a fabulous idea. I would rather that most of them survived, rising again to incite a civil war within Iuz's empire, ultimately defeating the Old One, and sending him "to ground" into the Vesve or BK. Personally, I always thought them better villains than Iuz. So much more can be done with an organized LE secret society, than a CE Sauron want-to-be. This would also fix the undefeatable demigod empire of the north problem plaguing post-war Greyhawk.
Spot on!! 100% agree.
In the 90's, TSR published AD&D (2ed) in Spain. So we only knew dragonlance, forgotten and dark sun. In those years Greyhawk was unknown. We only knew that it was the world of Gary Gygax and little else. But now, the more I know about Greyhawk, the more I like it. (Nowadays I already have my greyhawk books, of course!) That's why I appreciate your videos so much, with so much detail. I really love them.
Good to finally see the Horned Society getting some love. I almost cried when the Empire of Iuz absorbed them back in the 1990s. It is one of the main reasons I still run the Gold Box when I run Greyhawk.
Actually, Gygax did it first in the Gord the Rogue books.
I love this type of content. I always look forward to your videos.
Love Greyhawk Grognard videos. I will try and control myself and NOT pester you with any more questions about your game 😂, for now.
We use Warduke in the Horned Society.....just because we can. lol
Dude.... In my Greyhawk campaign back in the day, I made Bargle a Horned Society agent!
I enjoy that Geopolitics intentionally interact with the setting. Major rivers and lakes act as national/territorial boundaries. Verisimilitude matters. Plus...Nyr Dyv looks like Lake Superior. Upper Michigan is the best!! :)
It would be awesome if there was a sourcebook on them similar to the Scarlet Brotherhood. Maybe your next Kickstarter? 😉🙏🏻
YES 😁
You are full of information about Greyhawk, Grognard , you read between the lines. Absorbing all additional information along the timeline through other sources. It’s freaking amazing how much information you have. Carry on Sir.
Thank you so much!
Those foul Hierarchs doomed a noble Paladin to a terrible fate! Fie, and at them!
I really like what you did with the horn society. The thing about a society is that it can resurface later and doesn't have a definite death like a kingdom would. It makes perfect sense that as long as the goals of the horn society still exist, play society itself would exist even if underground.
2:53 Another reason would be the Blood War. Iuz is the child of a Demon Lord and the Horned Society worships Devils. So if they are truly Devil worshipers . . . 🤷♂
That is a GREAT idea: a few surviving Hierarchs start a secret society. Why hadn't I thought of that? Perhaps one of them is posing as something else: a good priest, a successful merchant, etc and is fooling the PCs into completing "quests" for them. The PCs think they're doing it to aid Furyondy & to be a thorn in Iuz's side, not knowing until much later that they've been duped into helping the new Horned Society. What a reveal/climax that'd make!
Great idea to let the Horned Society survive into a secred society. I always wanted to run an epic campaign Furiondy and Shield Lands, where the PCs would have to fight the Horned Society, and the Iuz comes back. The PCs might end up fight both, or ally with the Horned Society against Iuz, depending on their alignment.
"Carl Sargent destroyed it" you could stop right there and still be true.
Yes
I always thought they were a cool faction that wasn't used enough. You're ideas are really interesting.
Could be a great region for one of those centaur player-characters!
An interesting take.
I don't know from what editions that lore come, but I also saw on a Greyhawk wiki that they used daemons (yugoloths) to conquer the Shield Lands, which makes it even more confusing with the Devil cult + Nerull thing. I'm using them in my campaign right now so I'll have to make a decision, as I already included the daemon part.
I always preferred the Horned Society over Iuz. They were mysterious and shadowy where Iuz always struck me as cackling and cartoonish.
I don’t run anything in Greyhawk right now but if I did it would be CY576 just like the days of my youth.
Warduke is one of the lords!
Warduke 2024!
Very cool video, Greyhawk Grognard! How was Warduke associated with the Horned Society? Did he become a Hierarch at some point? Was he just one of their agents? What became of him after Iuz's purge of the Hierarchs?
Great video! This will do wonders for my campaign
Do you have anything on the principality of Ulek and its interactions with the pomarj?
Excellent video as always. I've often wondered about the situation with the Horned Society leaders and it's religion myself. Are they devil worshippers or are they followers of Nerull and other evil deities of the flanaess or do they worship the powers/fiends of the lower planes. What is certain is that Iuz truly handed them a devastating and terrifying defeat.
I always thought the Horned Society was much more interesting than Iuz and since I had already advanced the timeline in my own way by the time From the Ashes came out, I had them as a constant menace that sponsored subversive groups. In my world they were more evil than the Scarlet Brotherhood who were more lawful
Wasn't Warduke one of the Hierarchs at one point? I swear I remember reading that.

I always thought that the Horned Society was very under used in the setting
Hey there Greyhawk Grognard!
I'm also a Greyhawk old school Grognard...
...all of my campaigns are in the WoG.
I'm now coding a video game that mimics WoG.
I was wondering if we could communicate privately through email?
Contact information is available on my website, on the legal stuff page. Link is in the video description.
Darn thiefling
You would have thought the LE's would ally with the LN's to combat the Chaos menace pervading during and after the GH wars.
For me the "horned Society" is associated with the old druidic Horned Lord associated with the Wild Hunt and the Druidic aspect associated with Death (Nerul).
