I live in Australia and literally just witnessed this! The weather cleared up and it was nice and sunny so I decided to head out for a walk and 30 seconds in I noticed spiders floating past my face, then looked up to see THOUSANDS of the little fuckers floating around everywhere.
Mad respect for the little spider... You look at this tiny insect, thinking it's just a stupid thing that eats flies. Yet it knows how to use wind to transport itself to somewhere else. A bold and clever strategy in order to find a new home. It would be weird, but also fascinating to see. Not scared of spiders, unless they were the size of a cow and chasing me down...
@@cwissant1915 I’m terrified of spiders! I’d literally faint if it was raining spiders and then I’d probably wake up covered in spiders and I’d faint again lol. God o cannot even picture this raining spiders scenario without feeling extreme anxiety!
They aren't. Spiders have been able to fly for a very long time. It's a common method baby spiders use to leave the nest, which is why spider rains happen
No offense but is u wanna live in Australia, I advise you not to...... Ur telling me if it's I'm just walking to school, 100,000 spiders can just randomly fall on my head.... oh heeelll naw
I live in north america and we dont get anything nearly that severe, but we occasionally have balooning spiders all over. Iowa is very flat, so for a lot of the little spiderlings, the highest point they can get to before trying to lift off is a bush or a street light, houses, etc... It means that they accumulate intead of spreading around. I remember running my hands through a bush and chasing my sister with my hand covered in tiny spiders.
It is common for them to do this in the same place and you’re correct on the parachute part but they do it in mating season. You see it in many animal species; they instinctively move to a certain region annually to have an easier time finding mates. 👍🏻
In Kybong, Queensland I rented a cabin on a dam surrounded by trees. One morning it was like the sun did not shine because all around me it was dripping with mist and cob webs. It was watching a horror movie in real life. My one biggest regret was not having a camera or a phone.
It's pretty amazing that within the next few years we'd learn that these spiders fly through electrical currents. They're pretty amazing little creatures and we're learning lessons from them about how to design our smallest drones since physics doesn't work the same on that small level. lol, scientists put spiders in an environment with no wind and no electrical charge. They turned up the charge and the spider's rear ends would point up as if they're about to fly, then they did. Wearing black is naturally aerodynamic. Thank you, SciShow, for leading me here.
they just found out in a study, that spiders for balooning use electricity of our atmosphere! Somehow they positively charge their silk, and since the ground is positively charged, this propels silk upward, and they use this lift for travel. Though nobody knows how exactly they charge their silk. :O
“It looks like something from a horror movie” Yes...that barn over there does look like a mighty fine place to hack up bodies and fashion them into skin luggage
All people talking about burning them in flames but little did they know in 3 years later Australia has a massive fire in the forest and everyone wants to help but cant do anything
On my cousin's farm here in the U.S., the spiders fly. Those large, orange/brown farm spiders spin large, loose bundles of web into the air that get caught by the wind, and the wind picks them up like a balloon. It's terrifying.
The way they explain what ballooning is, is completely bogus. Their silk threads don't catch on the breeze, you don't even need any wind for them to do it. It's actually to do with the positive static electric charge in the atmosphere, and how the spiders threads are also charged which causes them to spread out from each other. If your curious just search it, there are other videos which explains how it Actually works.
Well consider yourself lucky if you live in Australia in Los Angeles there is a small that a sharknado could happen if their strong enough lift them and pass over the water
