    On the Emira: "naturally aspirated V6 lump"
    Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's supercharged.
    One of the things holding me back from "upgrading" from my current Evora 400 is I'm worried it'll be too soft and the lovely V6 is going to be muffled by the now mandatory GPF. Would love a 570S spider, but prices are crazy at the minute.

    • @JayEmmOnCars
      @JayEmmOnCars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      You are correct - what I was thinking (and not saying) was the supercharged lump gives you that more naturally aspirated throttle response/power curve - versus the turbo which I tend to find dulls things.

    • @TMGE1967
      @TMGE1967 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      There's no GPF on the Emira V6 First Edition, just 3 cats like the Evora. Replacing the 3rd cat with a straight pipe will be a simple mod if you want more exhaust noise

    • @chrisbarnes6353
      @chrisbarnes6353 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@TMGE1967 That's interesting, thanks (is it because it's low enough volume not to be mandatory?). I wonder why it sounds muted compared to the Evora in that case... something to do with modern noise/emission regulations?

      I sold my Evora S, went Exige then been all over the place! Honestly? Keep the Evora, as Jayemm says, prices will dip (then hold as all lotuses do) and you could get one 2-3 years in for a bit of a steal. I wanted a McLaren at the bottom of the dip, those times have passed now and there market will need another decent dip to make them a good buy (maybe 15k up at the moment?). Lots of cheap tatty ones I saw, awful!

    People seem to forget that you are probably only going to have around 80 years or so on this planet based on current average life expectancy in the UK.
    Of that you will likely have 60 odd years of driving time, assuming you pass your test at 18 and hand your licence in at 78. Of that your window of being able to afford a dream car is further reduced, since you will likely have to work and save whilst going to college/uni, buying / renting a house/flat, having a relationship, maybe kids etc . Realistically your window of opportunity to realise this dream is likely to be 10-20 years…if you are lucky and don’t get ill.
    So, you get the chance, the planets align and you buy your dream car.......whereupon you stick it in the garage, drive it once a month watching every mile scared to lose money on something that will probably depreciate anyway. For the likely time you are able to enjoy it, you should drive the pants off it and maximise your RETURN ON LIFE investment. Relax about the depreciation, you’ll be dead soon and it won’t matter anyway. Moral - Buy what you love and enjoy driving it.

I bought my F Type R as I probably have 12 years of driving left, if I stay well and my eyesight is good, so you are bang on. I've done all the family growing stages of car, now I am reaping the benefits of having worked for 40 years! I don't worry about the mileage & fuel (maybe tyres lol) but I know I am living (alive) whilst I am in it that's for sure.

      @teabagtowers3823 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Problem with the SF90 is it is more of a computer on wheels it is insanely fast but as drivers car it's not that good. Chris Harris said it on Top Gear Evo during their car of the year said it, it is more of a technical achievement than an actual drivers car.
      Honestly the 296 GTB looks the better car out of the new hybrid Ferrari's. SF90 is just a numbers machine and nothing else really. That and having seen one at Ferrari Nottingham parked next to a Maserati MC20 which is a very pretty car in the flesh the SF90 it is just not a good looking car.
      That is the one thing I disagreed with in this video although, looks are subjective I think the MC20 in the flesh is stunning.

    • @deanchur
      @deanchur 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@teabagtowers3823 You're right; I was going to put down something about Chris Harris' review and how he's called it out a few times. The problem with numbers cars as well is that a) they don't always add up (eg Pikes Peak results this year), and b) there's always something coming along soon with a better number; I'm surprised the AMG Black has held the Nordschliefe record for nearly 2 years, though I suppose an inevitable 992 GT2 RS will topple it.

    The moral of the story: buy the great cars which are out-of-fashion from the people who bought high when they were "in fashion" and are now selling low to chase the next fad. That usually involves looking past the cars being hyped, and digging up the forgotten models which were actually quite good.

The Ford engineering at the time of development , has held good. So I do not understand the scare story here on high cost ownership.Probably one of the most beautiful cars in the last 30 years, I have had very little depreciation and even a bit more is no big deal .Also have an Emira on order , and remember these cars are going to be the last of the breed , so honestly as choice becomes more limited prices will not plummet, and even some depreciation is not a big deal on a 75k base.

    I felt you were a tad harsh about the 540c. I bought mine (a 2017 car with one previous owner) when it was less than a year old. Where I live I'm surrounded by loads of country roads, and the car is great fun to push hard without being OTT. In four years of ownership the only issue has been a leaky air con. I looked at the 570S before I bought it and could not see the difference was worth the price gap. Yes, I fancy a 720S, but there quite a step up in price, and in truth I really like my 540c.
    PS you also mention the Aston Martin Vantage. I've had the same V12 Vantage (2012 manual) for nine years. Only one issue during this entire period (seized brake caliper nipples) , a great car to drive, and sounds like a rocket ship! Also, it is worth today what I originally paid for it - which is always good. Chalk and cheese with the 540c - but still a pleasure to throw around. I can 't let it go either! Happy ending.

It takes someone with extensive knowledge of the model history, driving experience, ownership considerations, pricing and options available, brand prestige, market availability, technical performance, production volume and biz tendency of the brand to come up with such analysis. I didn’t buy or have any desire to buy any of the cars mentioned here (even tho I could afford any of them), and while I can list a few common reasons i am nowhere as comprehensive as what James outlined. Bravo! Btw GT blk prices already came down relatively hard (20-35%), sf90 flippers are running in secret, v8 vantage was really “been there done that”, mc20 was humongous in person it’s just bad value and I never thought of the new Gt4 that way other than I was extremely disappointed with the sound (have a gts 4.0 as daily)….great insights!

    James, the one car I thought would be sat on the top of your list is the 992 GT3! I appreciate that everyone thinks it is the dog's doo da's however, these cars are being offered so far above list that I cannot believe anyone with any sense would part with north of £200k. We are, I think, on the cusp of a very significant correction in car values (and other toys!); and I think that the 991.2 (one of these is being advertised at £168k) and particularly 992 GT3's values will be well and truly walloped. Whilst the last major market correction may not be repeated, I can cast my mind back to the days when GT3 RS models were being offered in the high £70k's. So, fantastic cars they may be, these are the last place I'd be putting my money right now.

    Let's face the general theme: GB imports so many flashy cars, the market is completely saturated.
    Unless LHD is specified (a wise choice if you enjoy a proper drive), this gives a stomach turning mix of high purchase price and big depreciation. For example, a LHD V8 Vantage is probably worth at least twice the GB price in Europe.

      Its just people trying to find new ways of gaining wealth. Whats been happening to the car world is actually really sad. Speculators have gotten in and its taking over at an alarming rate. Even before the Covid jumps, I noticed that Depreciation times were shrinking for some modern cars thanks to the internet. And some car youtubers go around boasting about how they helped drive up markets on certain cars because they thought they were criminally undervalued. So they basically sold them to collectors and speculators hoping they'd bite. Now everyone is trying to be an "InVeStOr" with whatever car seems interesting. I still see 0 problem with a car being undervalued, that just means someone young who can save up for it or makes a decent amount of income can save up over a few decades and get that Poster car they grew up seeing. But those days are over atm it seems.
      The thing that will ruin car culture, is caring more about getting money out of every fun car in existence and treating them like homes or hard assets. Its the dumbest and most cancerous thing to watch.. I see Greed pouring out of many in the car world now and it makes me fear for the hobby. especially as inflation and cost of living goes up.

Also 2 separate Porsche retail GB owned dealers have told me in the last 3 weeks that no new orders are being accepted on GT4’s or spyders (despite Configurator suggesting you can still spec one) as very limited supply going forward and fewer allocations than current deposits taken. I think Cars are a terrible "investment" at the moment in general, there might be some short term growth but the way things are going there will be a lot of anguished investors. People are looking outside of traditional or currency investments, going into Precious Metals, Art, Blockchain based items like Bitcoins or NFTs. Cars might seem to be inflation resistant at the moment but what happens if fuel price continue to soar? What happens if fuel actually gets rationed in some way or even if IC vehicles face restrictions or massive paywalls to disincentivise use?
    If by 2030 Petrol is £20 a Gallon and driving a car with an IC engine on a Motorway is pay per mile + another £30+ congestion/green charge to enter a City how well will the car market hold its value then? A very small number of very rare cars and some with circuit pedigree might retain or even increase, in general though it will be pretty apocalyptic for someone thinking Cars will be inflation resistant.
    This isnt even going into the possible worst case scenarios like a War or total financial collapse, which are not outlandish possibilities with the way things are going. Otherwise buy cars to enjoy and make the most of them while we can, soon most will be almost paperweights.

      Before 5 years buying cars was good hobby for real entusiasts. Now every car with over 20 years on the shoulders is too expansive. Also because many people think are a work for have money back. Nah. First was a passion, now speculation. I have my classic sport car... and I live her.

      @@manuocio Enjoy them while we can, speculators looking outside of currency investments are making a mess of Cars, Real Estate and even more obscure stuff like CCGs.
      Hoarding them in the hope they are not as fragile over the long term.

      @@Tuberuser187 This is why I now am in favor of seeing Speculators/Investors lose everything and wind up in a food line. Their greed has really began to infect even the average car enthusiast. The average enthusiast who 10-20 years ago just cared about enjoying the hobby and wasnt in it for making bank on said possible cash cow they sat on.
      I see it in comment sections about how they are done driving their fun car or their daily now that V8's are dying off or performance cars as we've known them are wrapping up. and that they dont want to risk harming their possible money maker's potential value. Its gross to see and will definitely destroy the car hobby for everyone. Then only the very well off people have their pick of all the cars.

    Time in stock = time cash tied up. Paying X for a car will influence margins, but X over time = X amount of cash tied up restricting cash flow. For example: a dealer looks to pay £100k for a car, which it intends to sell for £130k. The dealer anticipates £5k of servicing costs etc. to get the car ready for sale and targets £25k in gross margin (19%).
    The seller is looking for £110k in p/x for a new car the dealer has in stock, which the dealer also anticipates will generate £25k in margin. Whilst paying that price will take £10k out of the gross margin (all things being equal), the dealer's main concern is actually: "If I buy this car at £100k, £105k or agree to the full £110k, that's £100k+ in cash tied up for an unknown period of time, which I could use to buy more sought after makes and models."
    Laying out £100k in cash for one car in p/x for another that it makes £25k on still leaves the dealer with a net £75k shortfall. A risky game indeed, especially when buying in marques with greater uncertainly of sale.

    Couple of points, I really agree with the older vantage points, this also goes for DB9s of the same age, they get passed around at a big service. Look for low owners. The Maserati though… I wasn’t convinced until I seen it in person. Didn’t hear much from it but I presume you can put an exhaust on it. My god it looks amazing in person. I thought Maserati might be done but they still know a few tricks. Same with the lotus, looks much better in person.

    Do you think in my case, the less expensive 718 GTS 4.0L would fare better than the GT4? I was able to able to fully spec a ‘22 manual GTS 4.0L for almost 5k under MSRP back in April ‘21 which i picked up Oct ‘21.

      Yes. More than enough for the road (same engine just slightly different software) and more comfortable for the road.
      Can still lose your licence with it very easily. 80mph in second with a manual.

    Emira is already done...two week old car, 20 miles on the clock, most of the Lotus network didn't want the car at all, List was £83K...ONLY offers were early £70's - so unless you are happy with the depreciation and are holding for long use, you need to move quickly. These cars will be in the £60's in 2023.

    Yes. Yes. Yes.
    It used to be that people were peeved by Ferrari dealers seeming to be so aloof that they would refuse cash in exchange for car, because cash simply wasn’t enough without hoop-jumping.
    Far far better than what has happened with Porsche, where dealers have essentially been allowed to engage in conspiracy and corruption with friends.

    In my thoughts at some point (not sure when mind) is either the 981 Cayman S or a 997.2 C2 S 911, I actually think 911’s prices are still quite high, so leaning more towards the Cayman but honestly still abit 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Viewers need to understand that the UK and US markets are very very different. What might be a very hot car in the US, may not be a very hot car in the UK and vice versa. Lotus is a good example. In the US, Lotus isn't as popular as they are in the UK. In the US, Ferrari's hold better values than they do in the UK.
