On my very first visit to Romania in the summer of 1990, right after the fall of communism, I intuited that Romania was a country in which the old Europe lived on, in ways in which it didn't in other paces, even in spite of the long spiritual slumber imposed on the country by communism. And in my life experiences in Romania that followed, my initial intuition was confirmed.

I am glad to stumble upon your channel. Moldovan folk magic is very similar to the folk magic in Serbia where I´m from. This tradition is very much alive even today among the Vlach people of eastern Serbia. Putting importance in dreams, protection from evil eyes, importance of saints (especially Saint Paraskeva of the Balkans), asking Muma Padure for aid etc, is ever present.

That's interesting, and I think that I can connect some dots here... You talk about the Vlach people of eastern Serbia - they are probably close relatives of the Wallachian people of southern Romania. Also, Padure is also a Romanian word meaning "forest" I visited an enchanted forest in Transylvania, right outside of Cluj-Napoca, which was called Padurea Baciu, or the Forest of the Shepherd King. Like Sedona, there were several spiritual energy vortex sites within the forest, and you could meditate in them to open your chakras. There was also an open meadow within the forest that they said was a landing pad for OZNs, which is Romanian for UFOs. The interesting thing about these vortexes is that there was usually a circle of trees growing around these vortex sites, and trees that normally grew straight were growing in a twisting or spiraling manner - and all the trees in the circle were spiraling in the same direction!

Does anyone have some sources for learning about witchcraft in Romania? I really would love to learn but whenever I try to do research online I'm led to stereotypical articles that repeat the same false info over and over. Moldova is close but, I want to learn about Romanian practices that are the least affected by Slavic influence since there is already a lot of info on that. Thanks!

I would be very interested in any suggestions for good academic studies on Moldovan and Romanian magic. I have seen the ones listed on Dr. Kapolo's website, but was wondering what else has been done.

The "fright" condition seems to be a widespread thing in folk magic. In Latin American cultures it is sometimes referred to as "susto" (scare).
