  • My "new" Marlin lever action .357 shoots great but there is one thing about it that really irritates the heck out of me. How could it leave the factory like this?

Ordered a 1894 .44 mag. Showed up at the gun shop but the action locked up first time. It was cycled. Sent it back to Marlin, they repaired andd sent the gun back. This 1894 is reliable and one of my favorite shooters.

I had one of these Remlin rifles. Right out of the box the action was frozen shut. We literally had to have someone hold the gun down while we pulled up the lever with both hands. We then had to work the lever over 100 times to get it to stop sticking. Also the stock was cracked at the receiver. It looked like some installed it with a sledgehammer. The forend had a different sheen than the Butt stock. QC was non existent! Accuracy wise it was excellent and there were no malfunction issues after working the action to smooth it out.

Mine came with a threaded barrel....but the shoulder of the barrel was not cut square with barrel.....making it useless for mounting a suppressor. A trip to Lohman’s Gunsmithing in Houston TX.....who has a Marlin Lever action rifle expert there.... They squared the shoulder and fixed several Marlin Factory errors. Now My 1894 357mag is a lifetime keeper. Thanks Lehman. Love that rifle.

I’m OCD about things like the handguard, but that wouldn’t have stopped me. I bought a 16” Rossi 92 .357 magnum a few years ago, and the top of the buttstock was flat, the overall finish was DULL, and the stocks were wider than the receiver. I planed the top of the buttstock, fit the stocks to the receiver, and gave it about 8 coats of TruOil. Thanks for Sharing! 👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I think you did well in buying that rifle! I certainly wouldn't complain about the checkering thing. That rifle is made to slip into a truck mounted rifle holder or a scabbard on a horse you're riding and used for all kinds of plinking, like coyote control, feral pig control, deer hunting, extra. A little big caliber for rabbits, but if you have crows migrate through your property, and dont have a shotgun handy, you can sure have some fun with that one for them too!

    08:21 - 08:26 awesome shot! i.e., camera shot.
Versatile camera angles provide a more entertaining viewing experience. mixup98 is all over the place, for our benefit.
The southern Nevada location is ideal. Good that there's no wind, as sometimes happens to the extreme and disrupts the video AND near-ruins the audio.
For my money the look and overall appearance of vintage Marlin 1894 .357 Magnums (you know, with the white spacing between the butt plate and stock; a gold trigger; and pre-safety) with their infinitely better appearing wood are worth the patience and investment in time it takes in looking for a used one. This one's wood is too dark, like dark chocolate and overall looks kinda "blah." The earlier ones' wood looked more butterscotch brown; one could admire the grain and texture of the wood.
Our host does a commendable job of informing us, enlightening us on the particular firearm; and when shooting assures us a good time with his variety of targets and distances.
But, boy, oh boy, he's gotta get that stock's checkering fixed 'cause he's about ready to set himself up for an ulcer worrying about it like he does here.

  • @grigorirasputin5020
    @grigorirasputin5020 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

If the extra line on the checkering is the worst thing wrong with the gun, you have a great gun!
Reminds me of one my biological father's girlfriend bought him in the late 1980's. It was a nice gun. He fired a Remington .357 lead SWC in it and the extractor tore the case head off, leaving the cylindrical hollow portion of the case in the chamber. He sent it back to Marlin and after a while, for whatever reason, they determined the gun to be FUBAR and sent him a new one. When he died, she offered to let me have it which I thought was generous at the time. I told her since she got it for him it was rightfully hers and for her to keep it. Wish I had known how badly she was going to rip me off on my "half" of the estate as she was named executor. I would have taken it.

As always, swell video sir. I only have two Marlin guns, a Papoose (wood stocked) purchased in 1991 and a model 20 bolt gun. Both have the micro-groove barrel and shoot good. The Glendale model 20 rifle cost me $60 in 2010 and for a thirty+ year old gun is in excellent condition. Topped with a BSA S4X32WR optic costing under $25 it makes for an accurate combo. Best ammo in my Marlin is Armscor Precision .22 solids. Really neat watching you put the 1894CS through it's paces, thanks.

I bought one of these brand new back in January. Did a lot of homework on it and decided that the "Remlin" days were in the past. Picked it up and the fit, finish, checkering, action were absolutely fantastic. Then after about an hour of looking at it I found about a 3/8 inch crack in the stock at the tang. I gotta admit, I was a little hot when I called Remington but kept it professional. They could not have been nicer, they answered quickly, requested a couple pics and had a new stock out to me that day and allowed me to keep the cracked one. I put a dot of super glue in the crack and allowed it to seep. I am certain it will be good to go as a back up.
I love my 1894, I handload as well and 6.0 grains of Unique with a 125grn Plated bullet is like a .22 and is still going right at 1200fps. It is so much fun to plink with. It is actually quite accurate with iron sites. Then you get into stout charges of Winchester 296 a 125 JHP will do 2100fps out of it and 158's will do 1,750. These little carbines really change the game for .357 magnum. We love to pop steel and water jugs. Glad you got one of these rifles, enjoy!

Nice 👍 I bought my Marlin .357 over 35 years ago and it’s still my favorite. Even though it has that dam safety at least the stock is smooth and I doesn’t have a front hood. These micro groves barrels are super accurate. Marlin said back in the day it was the second most accurate rifle after the .9 mm carbine they also made. But I believe this is the most shootable and accurate gun ever made. I have shot over 10,000 rounds from mine and it’s still like new. What I would do to my shooting friends I’d put in first a reload .38 then a factory load then a reloaded .38 and the a reloaded .357 for the finale a factory .357, boom 💥! This was a great way to show off the versatility of this fine weapon. Get one BUT ONLY IF IT WILL BE THE ONLY RIFLE YOU WILL OWN !

You sir, have a great taste in firearms! I found a great deal on a 336 in 30-30 from my local Walmart ($267) in 2019. I have put about 200 rounds through it with zero issues. The tube mag was off center, but just had to loosen the barrel band and re-center and tighten it back up. Also, sight was a bit off center to the right, but it shot a bit to the right, so once I centered that it was shooting dead on. Thanks for another great video!

Not gonna lie- When I got mine new earlier this year, just as CV began becoming big news, I knew what I got was a project, not a gun. On top of having access to custom parts, in Houston we have a great little family company that makes aftermarket parts for leverguns, including this one.
    Skinner sights
    Custom extractor
    Custom lever
Custom ejector spring. Had to work in the action, and soften the mag spring with snap caps. Luckily no furniture damage that i could see.
In the end, i probably spent almost enough with the gun+aftermarket parts to be able to buy a Henry with a loading gate. But i wanted a common pistol-magnum-chambered carbine. I'm happy with this. And now it cycles flawlessly, feels good, shoots straight, and feels like my very own. So... There's the story of my remlin 1894c.

I had the same trepidation you did about Marlin. On the basis of assurances that their problems had been largely resolved, in 2016 I ordered the Model 1894 in .44 Magnum. I replaced the semi-buckhorn sight with a dovetail blank, installed a rear aperture sight and replaced the front sight, all Skinner products, and removed the front sight hood. I couldn't be happier. The fit and finish are very good, and with my modifications it makes a tack-driving low-to-moderate range deer rifle. It's a keeper.

Up front I'll say my only stake in this is that I own a Dremlin 336C in 30-30. (That's a Remlin that's been debugged over a few years.) The checkering on it was awful and it sometimes jammed, but with a bit of work it has become a favourite gun and now sits in a Champion synthetic camoflage stock which fits really well and is noticeably lighter. (After three attempts I gave up trying to get a good walnut stock for it). I recall reading a article which gave 'the other side of the story' and just re-found it at "Marlins back..." by Robert Forago in The Truth About Guns, dated Jun 07, 2014. I've paraphrased a few bits of it below, as I think it's worth a read.
The equipment was old, sometimes over 60 years old. We realised moving it to Remington's factory at Ilion where there was some spare space would not be easy, but we had the area available and could keep it separate from our other production. It meant we had to move the equipment, train people and establish the new location. Old equipment doesn't travel well. To make it worse, we discovered dimensioned drawings of the iconic rifles didn't exist. The 'plans' had been passed down through the generations and, as many old hands didn't make the move, we lost that expertise. We had a good workforce, but they had never made lever actions, so there was a learning curve.
While I don't agree with releasing poor product, I can sympathise with having to set up a new production facility with machinery that is not only old but knocked about during a move, with little good information enabling effective quality control of parts. For the sake of what was once a great brand (and we can now say the same of Remington itself) I hope Marlins gets perpetuated in a form people can love once more.

I bought a ("remlin") Marlin XT-22. Right out of the box it had a BENT BARREL. Returned it to local gunshop (they've sat on it (warranty) for nearly a year), doesn't look like it's going to be fixed. Now that Remington have gone bankrupt, I think the best solution is an angle grinder. As an Aussie, it's probably put me off 'made in USA' for life.

I bought an 1894C on 357 last year during the Spring. Fit and finish are great. Very accurate. The action is super smooth. Far smoother than the previous 1894CS that I purchased used in the mid 90's, but sadly had to be sold in 2007.
My new one is a way better gun than my old one.
From what I have been told, Marlin changed the design of the lifter, making 38's load more reliably

Good to hear new Marlin quality is greatly improved--but still need to work out a few issues. Keep up the good work. By the way my 1991 manuf Marlin 1894 CS had it's own problems. I bought a Marlin 1895 in 45-70 and it would fail to cycle at times. I stripped it down and found milling shavings in the action. I cleaned it up and now it is fine. But that should have been caught at the factory. I have 4 Marlins and they all shoot fine, but my JM 336 30-30 shoots like magic... go figure, it shoots very good off hand and close to my bench rifle on the bench. I do not know anything anymore about rifles, I have no idea why cheap 30-30 amo shoots so close to the premium stuff I buy for my bench rifle. I bought that JM dirt cheap and I will never part with it. Well I would give it to my son if he likes it. That's what good dads do.
