    Maybe one of your savings goals should be a “splurge fund” specifically for those moments! That way you still get the gratification of saving, but you know that money has a purpose and is there to buy things that make you happy or will make your life easier.

    We have spenders guilt and sometimes when we don't, someone comes and says it was a waste of money. I guess the secret is to ask ourselves: does this bring me joy? Will I enjoy having this? Did I do my research and know it's something I want/need? Maybe not all of them at once, depending on the thing, but if your answer is yes, then is something worth the money that you worked for. An iPhone, the car that is worth it for you... heck, we are the ones using and paying for it anyway!

    Carter, thank you so much for your transparency and authenticity when it comes to spending guilt. Today, I got home from a week long trip in Las Vegas, and I experienced so much spending guilt both during the trip and now that I’m home. Your words were exactly what I needed to remind myself that spending responsibly and treating myself don’t have to be mutually exclusive ☺️ Thanks again!

      Yes yes yes!!! Think of all the memories you made on the trip & the great things you did/ate/drink!! Money returns but experiences don't!

    I've found that for bigger purchases, setting up sinking funds in a completely separate savings account, and then putting away a bit each month has really helped me overcome that guilt. I don't view that money in terms of my net worth growth because it's separate from my savings/investments - almost as if it isn't mine haha! This gives me time to decide if I really want the thing, and then if/when I do decide to buy it, because it's already saved for, it doesn't eat into my budget for that month and I can save as normal and not feel guilty about spending this "extra income".
    Depending on the purchase though it can be a serious waiting game!

    I'm currently taking classes to get my CFP license (Certified Financial Planner) and I work for a financial advisor rn. Money guilt is something A LOT of people go through. My personal way to think of it is "as long as I'm meeting all my savings targets, the excess money is for whatever I want". Let's face it, money buys some of our happiness (whether that's time, material goods, experiences, etc) If you're meeting your savings targets, the other money is meant to be spent. There's no need to feel guilty for using money for the purpose it's here for - buy a little happiness!

    • @CarterSullivan
      @CarterSullivan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I 100% agree with this! That's what I'm trying to frame my mindset around! I focus on savings goals then leftover can be spent responsibly however! Thanks for sharing Emily ♥️

    I also struggle with spending money on myself. I was talking to someone about this and they said that this is the only time in your life that you're able to be selfish and able to spend money whatever amount of money you want on yourself. I've tried buying smaller things for myself that I WANT and not things I NEED. It's such a difficult mindset to change, I definitely resonate with you!

    I felt like I was listening to myself speak. What I try to do is use my anxiety to like fuel a feeling of gratitude rather than working myself up into secondary trauma.
    So like instead of "youtube might leave" --> worst case scenario brain spiral, it's:
    "youtube might leave" --> I'm so grateful it's here right now and I appreciate it so much.
    I mean, obviously ideally for you and myself, the ultimate goal is to eliminate the "youtube might leave" anxiety haha but for now, this has helped me not fall into an anxious downward spiral.
    You got this!

      @@CarterSullivan Love this! I’ve also been working on anxiety spirals and using a thoughts/reality practice.
      Your thoughts: what if TH-cam goes away? What if I lose that income?
      Reality: there has been no indication of TH-cam going away. It’s a large corporation that employs many and is relied on by many companies for marketing. Changes to TH-cam, especially it’s deletion, would be all over business news. One of the biggest social media platforms won’t die with no warning. Heck, MySpace still exists. Additional reality: You are smart and capable of many things!! You have the knowledge and skills to get marketing/social media manager jobs thanks to your TH-cam experience. It’s a hot job market! Data analytics? You could find something. Healthcare? You could find something. Expanding on your current role? I don’t know enough to say. Part time minimum wage job to tide your funds over? Easy peasy. You have emergency savings for a reason. How long could that last you if you tightened up your budget? Could you find a full time job during that time. I bet a while and yes!

    Hi Carter, thanks for sharing! I find myself in the same situation having spending guilt on myself. Something I’ve found that helps is getting rid of or donating things I no longer use whenever I am going to buy something new. For example: I am going to buy a new pair of sneakers soon and I am already planning to go through my shoes and donate at least 1 or 2 pairs that I no longer use. This helps me to know that im going to definitely use my new item and that the dollars I spend will be well worth it…I hope that helps! 😊

    I have tons of money guilt! I'm constantly comparing myself to other people and what they're making/spending. The best method I've found is to use goals to treat myself. That way when I look at an item, I don't feel guilty for spending the money. I feel proud for accomplishing whatever I did to get it!

    • @CarterSullivan
      @CarterSullivan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do the same! I typically set savings goals and reward myself when I him them! But life isn't always like that, there will be spontaneous items you want & I'm trying to rewire my brain to know it's OK for spontaneous things to come out as long as it's well thought out/budgeted for!

    I have AWFUL spending guilt, but one thing I do that helps a lot is budgeting that money for myself. If its in my budget, then I know I can afford it, so I feel less guilty about it. I know you already do that, but I find reminding myself of that helpful!

    Self employed or not, anyone can lose their source of income overnight. Having a bit of fear isn't bad tbh but you should also enjoy life and your earnings! I have money related guilt sometimes too. The way I deal with it is by scheduling my big purchases if that makes sense lol. Like let's say I want a pair of sneakers, I'll just tell myself that I'll get that pair next month. That way I look forward to it and don't end up spending extra on other things and also don't end up feeling guilty since it was a planned purchase lol. But ofc do whatever works for you :)

    • @CarterSullivan
      @CarterSullivan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @IveGotThisX2
    @IveGotThisX2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The best way to deal with high purchasing guilt is to save for the purchase so for instance you want a purse that cost $200 well each paycheck put a little aside so you you can save for the purse and when you have saved the money. If you still want it then get if not put money in savings works every time. Cheers 🥂

    • @CarterSullivan
      @CarterSullivan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    As someone who is constantly trying to shift their mindset, I think you should listen to some podcasts on money mindset and the difference in scarcity vs abundance. You could even try saying some affirmations in the morning and then again when you go to bed. It has really helped me shift my mindset and know that money is not something to be scared of or worry about and you should also know that money is energy and is something you can tap into at any moment so you should welcome it into your life. Hope that helps!

      @@CarterSullivan Sorry for this late reply but anything with Law of Attraction and the scarcity mindset in general has really helped me. It's hard because these are beliefs that stem from a young age so we have to rewire our beliefs. Middle Ground podcast is a duo of two people I found from social media and their podcast is not about LOA but they have one specific scarcity mindset podcast I really love. I also really love Haley Hoffman Smith. If you need any other suggestions let me know! :)

    You will want to save up a moving fund. You will need a security deposit and first months rent in many area's in your apartment rental. Also Rentals have really increased over the year, esp in FLA, so you should really see what 6 months of expenses and rent and security will cost. PS I love my coach purses. I wear them all the time and they hold up. I bought three $50 purses that looked like crap after 6 months, before I spent 300 on a coach purse that looks like new still 2 years later. Think about price per wear.
