    My husband and I just recently implemented weekly budget dates. We have been married for 11 years but have always just lived, mainly paycheck to paycheck. We have never had goals. We talk about money all the time but usually just how much can we spend or what bill needs to be paid. We have always been lucky that we have always been on the same page though. No divorce based on finances for us. We are determined to take control and find a balance for happiness. Thank you for always being an inspiration!

    I completely agree. Whether you have joint accounts or not is not as important as having open communication about finances. And even if your able to spend whatever money you like it’s nice to check in with your significant other even just to get their opinion/perspective an a big purchase. You guys are doing great!

    Glad I’m not the only one wanting to save up for a wedding prior to getting engaged. Thanks so much for your informative video !! ❤

      I view it like saving for a house, you never know when it's going to happen and I don't want to get engaged and INSTANTLY be stressed about paying for a wedding

    Love that you’re saving early for a wedding!! I did the same thing and started putting some money aside before we got engaged, and I’m so glad I did - weddings are EXPENSIVE! Even the way we chose to do it which was super small (city hall “ceremony”, got a short white dress that can be worn again), in total it came to a bit over 10k!!! Granted a bit more than half of that was for the week long all inclusive Costa Rican resort for our honeymoon, but that’s just where we prioritized our spending. 10 days until we get married!!🥰

      So excited for you!!! It's reassuring to see others that saved early, I felt kinda weird at first doing it but with inflation and just how expensive life is it just makes sense!

    This is such a great take about handling finances with a significant other. Also, thank you for providing those 3 starter questions about finances. I always wonder how to open a conversation about finance especially in the country I live where talking about money is some sort of a taboo.

    I also think separating finances is a good idea, otherwise it just gets a bit too complicated lol. I like how you guys talk about major splurges, communication definitely helps a lot in the long run!! :)

    • @CarterSullivan
      @CarterSullivan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree! I'm definitely not opposed to combing finances down the road however no one talks about how keeping them separate can also be a really healthy thing in a relationship as long as you have good communication!

    Thank you for coming out with this video!! I was a personal advisor/banker for four years, and I can’t begin to tell you how many devastating situations I’ve seen when one person has control over all the finances. Everyone likes to believe their significant other will be alive for the longest time, and all it takes is for an accident to happen.
    So many people would come to me when I used to advise them to learn how to pay bills, write checks, have usernames/passwords somewhere safe to access them if needed, etc. it would always be a mess because late fees, interest, etc would happen because they didn’t know how to pay bills and relied on the other person.
    ***here’s everyone reminder to have a convo with your significant other about worst case scenarios and how to pay bills if something happens.
    My fiancé and I personally have separate accounts for the most part. We do have a joint checking and savings. We have the checking to pay rent, electric, phone, etc out of. The savings is for our wedding. So happy you guys are saving now for a wedding!!!!! They are expensive indeed. 🫣

    Not weird or crazy at all to start saving now for your wedding! My husband and I eloped in Mexico and still spent $3k on just the photographer, makeup/hair and “venue” (it was in a cenote) 🌴

    • @CarterSullivan
      @CarterSullivan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I honestly wasn't sure how people would take it- I feel like I'm someone who thinks well into the future with money and truthfully that's our next BIG expense, I view it like having for a house!!

  • @MathildeG
    @MathildeG 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Such a good idea to save for a wedding now. Plan to spend ~$15,000 obviously it can be lower, but that's the median price for a wedding. It's nuts I know, but everything is so pricey even if you're doing a simple wedding, it's expensive. It's just the prices are so inflated.

    • @CarterSullivan

    Hi Carter, thanks for all your videos! Sad to see you changed the spreadsheet you was using you recommended in March but I understand. Is this new spreadsheet you recommend editable can we update and add more rows and columns the last one we were limited and the seller is no longer available 😭 I love the idea of separate finances thanks for sharing your experience.

    • @CarterSullivan
      @CarterSullivan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like I said I still love that spreadsheet and support people using it I just think I needed something about more complex for my current financial needs! I haven't had to edit the rows/columns yet and editing them can mess up the equations! I'm sure this seller would reply but I can't ever guarantee!

    For being so young, I am very impressed with how mature you guys are handling this! Kudos to you. I think personally think its smart to not mix money until married. Less messy that way if something should happen.

    Hi just curious is the 10k savings your only savings account or do u have other future savings/investments?
    Can u possibly do a video on the main savings accounts to have

    • @CarterSullivan
      @CarterSullivan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have already filmed a video all about my different bank accounts and current savings/investments back in April so refer to that as its more detailed! I have the 10k as my emergency fund and also contribute to a TFSA and my pension!

    Do you have any tips on how to buy a house with your boyfriend? We are getting engaged soon and looking for houses but not sure how it works since we aren’t married yet. He has a credit score but I don’t, I have a good amount of savings but he doesn’t, and he has a full time job and I just have my internship. Thank you!

    • @CarterSullivan
      @CarterSullivan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a whole home buying series from last year! Keep in mind not sure where you live but we are in Canada and everywhere is different. I don't really have many "tips" besides talking to a mortgage broker. You don't need to be married to be on a mortgage together but credit score is VERY important and you both obviously need income as that determines your mortgage pre-approval amount. But going through the mortgage pre approval process is a great way to start!

    I've been saving for a wedding for 2 years now - like 1 year into my boyfriend's and my relationship HAHAHA. We're not engaged yet but it makes me feel so much better knowing I don't have to scatter when we do get engaged to figure out how much we can afford, how I'll save, etc.

    hhaha my friend started saving for her wedding when we were like 15 or 16, we are now 25 and she is getting married this year. girls motto is go big or go home, definitely wise to start saving for the wedding even if you arent engaged or have a set date, will make things much easier :D she had been together with then boyfriend for maybe a year if even that when see started to save. tbh idk if she thought hs the one at that point yet, she just wanted to be ready for the wedding haha.

    I am happy to hear someone else also separates finances. I get a lot of backlash from family for not combining finances with my long term partner.

    • @CarterSullivan
      @CarterSullivan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At the end of the day external family/friends have NO say on how you do your finances with your partner. As long as it works for you and YOUR relationship that's all that matters!
