Actually Jerry, Sean Anne & Nancy Wilson, Gavin from Bush and everyone in attendance said Maynard is the ONLY singer who was the most natural fit! If anyone could do it it would be Maynard!! And the ONLY singer Layne would approve of also!!!
Did you know that Staley has sung with Maynard on several occasions. I only wish I was at those live shows. My 2 most favorite band. I don't know which one I love more... so they tie for first and then soundgarden take the next spot.

Wouldn’t work out. As I understand it being a huge MJK fanatic, he writes all of his own lyrics and unless doing a full blown cover song he doesn’t sing other peoples lyrics, which I totally understand. Easier to emote to your own experiences and memories, or whatever you write about. Also, part 2 of this is that in AIC a big majority of the lyrics were written by Jerry Cantrell. NOT TO MENTION, the man has restaurants, vineyards, and 3 amazing band that tour all of the time, so where would he find the time?

Honestly I like DuVall as a vocalist way more in his former band Comes with the Fall...whatever...and I was never really impressed with Maynard's voice either (nothing that special) and I have some Tool albums (but I can't listen to any album for way too long)...Layne Staley was just too special/unique, the best imo (DuVall and Maynard are not even close). Just my opinion ofc.
maybe you should go back and give them a try without judging it based on Laynes departure....all 3 albums without Layne are still pretty damn good.

Great version of them bones. Funny thing is I saw Alice In Chains last year at the Epicentre Fest thing is Pomona play before Tool. I guess it's kind of expected that they would play a few songs together.

@EvilassProductions @megustatocar420 It's called a talk-box, and it's a great little invention that allows your voice and your guitar to sort of blend into one by distorting each other. I'd recommend "Rocky Mountain Way" by Joe Walsh; he's a former member of the Eagles, so not exactly very heavy, but towards the end of the song he has a talk-box solo which absolutely DEFINES talk-box solos. The device was still fairly unused in music at the time, and it still is, but it's great.
yeah lol, i just saw em at the mile hight music festival. it was their first show since 2007 i think.
i didnt know that you were agreeing with me at first. i mean yeah anyone can love tool but 90 dollars a ticket along with shipping and taxes the total for just one person came out to be 137 bucks, and i brought 2 people. but it was well worth it.

I think it is awesome. Basically he has the second mic hooked up to something similar to a guitar pedal which changes his voice. So he can A. sing normal, B. sing distored/different, and C. BOTH AT THE SAME TIME!
They really put on amazing live shows.
I am a huge aic fan been there since they started but do not ever talk shit about the Rev. maynard Tool is one of the most incredible band out there

i am not detracting from maynard's singing ability, and he has great range (on the higher end). i'm just saying that layne had the widest range of possibly any rock singer in history.

here if i was at an alice in chains concert and maynard came on stage i was fuckin ball my eyes out wit happiness to the point where it wud be embaressing.

The only reason fans of a band hate a newcomer is becaue they are used to the old band as a whole. When a replacement occurs, the fans seem to compare how "good" the new guy is compared to the former member. What most dont realize is that the new person is not a clone of the previous person so they fail to give the new guy a chace... such a shame :(

@metamaniac420 I myself see "grunge" as more so an era than much of a fully developed genre or sub-genre of music. But again as for southern influence in AIC, look at Jerry's taste. I may be wrong but I remember reading even somewhere a long time ago Jerry saying he and his dad would sometimes go down southern states during his youth. I do believe it is widely accepted he has spoken on some of his influence being southern in style in his guitar work. Check around for a written interviews.

maynard has probably the clearest, prettiest voice of any rock singer ever, but layne's voice had more range than anyone else's! i miss him for sure!!!! maynard certainly doesn't have lane's range, and lane certainly couldn't sing some of the highs in opiate or undertow where maynard really wails! but they both are one of a kind voices!

Try to sing The Outsider or Ticks and Leeches and get back to me. Let's just put it this way... there's a whole stock or generation of singers who've patterned their voice to Staley's (that's your sully erna and the likes) but no one has sounded like Maynard.
btw Maynard and Howerdel have awesome harmonies on Orestes.
Alice in chains is a 80 s like band with a singer that didn't sound like a girl. That's what made them seem more grunge, their singer.

chris cornell is awesome, and slaves and bulldozers is one of my favorite songs (and kudos to you for recognizing soundgarden's best song - unlike everyone else), but chris' range is great on the high side! layne could hit nearly as high as chris, and much much lower. that is range. i think you are mistaking the ability to hit the higher notes with range!
@GodofReapers I know about talk-boxes. I am pretty sure this isn't a talk box, because their is no tube. He has too mics and the tube is what makes the sound similar to talking. Plus I don't think you could sing very well with a tube in your mouth (because he will sing through both mics at the same time)
I know all about Joe Walsh. They are all great. Peter Frampton of course used one all the time too. Alice in Chains - Man in a box used one.
I think the beginning of Eulogy uses one too.
