Everyone has that one artist that you always wonder about the things they could have given the world if they hadn’t left the world as soon as they did. Jonathan Larson is mine. His work always seemed to come into my life when I really needed to hear it the most. I first heard Rent when I was a scared queer kid desperately looking for a family and people like me. I first heard Tick, Tick, Boom! as a writing major questioning if I was really making the right decisions choosing this career. His words and messages have truly changed and affected my life and I am SO so glad that Tick, Tick, Boom is now a movie, giving people who may have never heard Larson’s name before a chance to hear his story. The number one reason teachers leave the field is from stress! Teaching can be really taxing on the spirit, especially when you’re constantly “harping” and feeling more like a disciplinary figure in the lives of children you genuinely love. Not only that but the amount of thought and preparation that go into lesson plans and the added pressure of keeping up with the curriculum, if you work in a public school. I love that quote! I have bad days where I just want to cry and give up. I have to rely solely on my passion during those days. I’ll always know I love kids and at the end of the day, I love what I do too.

Man, my heart always goes to people who made something that inspired so many people and made this big an impact, but they never saw it. All Larson saw was rejection and delays, until he made the game changer but he never saw the reaction. Same goes for old artists like Rembrandt or Van Gogh who died penniless and unappreciated, yet now we treat them like gods of painting. They all have in common that they never stopped though, until they were physically removed from the world.
